Social Innovation Camp Philippines Ideas Announced

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Social Innovation Camp brings together software developers and designers with people who understand a social problem to help build web and mobile solutions to social challenges. We think the web and related technologies hold huge potential to create change in many different ways: how people hold those in positions of power accountable; who they rely on to provide the services they need to live healthy, happy lives; or how they make a difference to something that affects them.

But for any of this to happen, we have to understand what people really need and start building the technology that can help – which is what Social Innovation Camp is all about. Through unusual, creative events we bring together talented software developers and designers with social innovators to prototype effective web-based solutions to real social problems.

The top 6 ideas that will be developed into web or mobile-based technology at Social Innovation Camp Philippines, which convenes in Manila on September 13th - 15th, were just recently announced.

Social Innovation Camp Philippines have spent the last 8 weeks scouring the country to find the most promising back-of-the-envelope ideas to solve a social problem. They had a huge 70 ideas submitted to Social Innovation Camp and their judges have chosen just 6 of the best to help build over one weekend.

And here are the top six ideas:

RideTracker Lipa - This idea will run in a smartphone that uses GPS capabilities. This would help the commuters to know what type of public transportation and where to ride them to get to their destination. This will generate the possible travel plan for their destination and estimated amount of fare for the travel. This app will also display jeepney routes and terminals in the City. Another feature is the create report. This will allow commuters to send feedbacks about their ride and traffic conditions to the city authorities.

Bayanihan - A web-mobile application that lets users to either respond or report disasters near their vicinity. Responses will be coordinated through the “central station” (usually the local government disaster office) and will also be live-fed to their phones wherein volunteers can take immediate action. Everyone can be a volunteer, as long as they have the application installed. Also, these volunteers can report disasters in their area so that other volunteers can respond to them.

SocialSource
- Functions as a service brokerage website and app that will match used and surplus goods with suitable communities, organizations, and social initiatives. This will encourage recycling, proper disposal of surpluses, and identification of real needs.

Mapped Dengue - A smartphone and basic phone application that will plot the dengue cases via visualization or sms. The service will connect to hospitals where data will be collected and mapped based on location. An app will be available for subscribers where they can view updates. While basic phone can receive sms. The service can provide information that will support proactive solutions in an affected locale and public health information service about dengue.

Neighborhood Watch - lets users get to report in real-time or after-the-fact details of crimes that they've witnessed or have been a victim of--including the location via a map. Real-time crimes witnessed are tagged with a warning & trigger a report to the police and to other users. This will help in providing more timely police assistance and possible assistance from fellow citizens as well. All "hits" are recorded in the map to help provide a warning to take extra caution, and to give information to the police on where they would need to put up barangay outposts or improve lighting conditions.

Squela - A project-based learning approach. Learn real-world skills from industry experts and put it into practice as soon as you finish the course. A certificate is just that. What you can do is the real story.
