Young Artists’ IP Rights Discussed in Forum

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In this fast-paced age of evolving digital landscape, one now communicates and accesses information with just a click. However, with technology comes threat as both emerging and professional creators remain susceptible to the negative impact of this development as they share their outputs with the wider audience.

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), as a forefront of innovative and inclusive education, remains true to its mission to develop the interests and passions of the students through the efforts of its Intellectual Property Management Center (IPMC), which is specially established to cultivate intellectual property-mindfulness in the institution and protect its growing numbers of homegrown artists, design frontrunners and future industry leaders.

“Intellectual property awareness and best practices have become more important in this internet age,” DLS-CSB IPMC Director Attorney Ma. Janice Tejano stated. “Intellectual property (IP) rights are granted by law to the author or inventor of a work, which allows them to enjoy exclusive rights to their creation for a limited period of time. It serves as incentive for the time, effort, and resources they put into the work.”

She noted that IP rights are intangible assets; the owner can transfer their rights to another person, lease it, or give it up for public use.

Tejano explained that while “most state-owned and private universities in the country have an IP office, especially institutions which have Research & Development (R&D) centers and receive government grants that support scientific and medical researches of students and faculty, DLS-CSB is the pioneer private tertiary institution offering courses in design, arts, business management, hospitality management and information technology that is building a strong intellectual property culture from the ground up.”

“We empower the Benildeans to adopt the principles, concepts, tools, and best practices they need in their creative and innovative pursuits while maximizing it to their advantage,” Tejano elaborated. “Enriching their IP know-how hones them to become strategic and responsible creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs. This is a key advantage which Benilde gives through the support services of the IPMC.”

In cooperation with the College’s various academic programs and offices, the IPMC annually holds a series of campaigns, seminars and workshops to orient the community and ensure that the importance of the IP rights are “not only taught conceptually but are integrated in the culture, methodology and operations, and output of the institution.”

The institution is likewise equipped with its own IP Rights Policy that addresses and supports all types of student works and intellectual property covered under the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. IPMC has also established its own website wherein the students, educators, and associates can easily access the guidelines, view featured Benildean innovators and their creations, and, at the same time, use the platform to submit IP-related inquiries and complaints. They can likewise send an email or visit the office for their concerns.

“With respect to students’ works which they submit in compliance to their academic requirements, the Benilde IP Policy provides that the students own the work and the intellectual property to the work unless it falls under the exceptions of the guidelines or under a special contract with a third party,” Tejano clarified. “For artistic works, these are usually protected by Copyright, which is automatically granted upon execution or expression of the work without need of formal registration. Industrial Design, Patents, and Trademarks require a formal registration in order for legal protection to take effect.”

While the IPMC supports the Benildeans, they, too, solidify that the students also respect the rights of others. “Before using or sharing the original work of others, ask permission from the owner. If a work has no name or the owner cannot be identified, assume that it is Copyright protected and is not free for use by the public,” she advised.

She also elaborated the importance of using IP data such as patent, trademark, and design databases to check the innovation trends before working on an invention to avoid infringement of the IP rights of others.

Recently, the DLS-CSB IPMC was accredited as an Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and joins other universities and research development institutions in a network that gears towards the creation of intellectual property to establish the innovative contribution of Filipinos in the international patent system.

Angelica Panganiban Launched as Endorser for New and Improved Silka Green Papaya Whitening Soap

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Cosmetique Asia Corporation, makers of Silka Green Papaya Soap, gave us an introductory to the video advertisement which already came out on TV, along with its radio version, both featuring their new endorser, Angelica Panganiban.

Introducing the lady of the hour had mixed reactions but mostly because we were all starstruck with her glowing presence. The bubbly "tisay" little girl in Ang TV, the angelic face yet truly funny lady comedian in Banana Sundae, and the walang ka-effort effort dahil sa natural talent in acting in That Thing Called Tadhana, Angelica commands respect for being a well-endeared personality.

Sa Ang TV gag show pa lang I knew she will soon be among the pretty faces of showbiz, and I was right. During my interview with Janssen Co, the COO of Cosmetique Asia Corporation, I told him they made the right choice because Angelica is beautifully radiant inside and out. We witnessed her many intimate and personal stories, and how she dealt with the challenges in her life.

Group photo with Cosmetique Asia Corporation management team along with their Silka Green Papaya endorser, Angelica Panganiban

The media launch was held at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar Quezon City, an events venue smaller but similarly majestic to its bigger version in Bataan.

Casa Juico Events Place at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar located along Roosevelt Ave, San Francisco del Monte, in Quezon City.

I thought they only exist in Bataan but surprised there's a smaller, but also great for pictorials, one in Metro Manila
I saw the name of Chef Margarita Fores so she is probably the one responsible for the food served here.

First time, but couldn't explore the place thoroughly because of the rain...also pics are too gloomy and dark because of it
They have some portions of their lawn with artificial grass, and the inner areas are still under construction/renovation.

The ground exteriors, as well as the interiors, were majestic! You'll want to have this as your classy venue after your wedding, or hold your debut, birthday, anniversary or any special occassion.

As experienced, outside parking spaces would probably accommodate around 30 cars or less but a bit hassle when you park first coz the other cars would be blocking you, and you have to ask them to move out their cars if you leave first. I think a few more cars can park inside too.

But the food, from appetizers, to the tanglad-infused iced tea drink, and main dishes, especially the leche plan dessert, served here was so good that I ate everything on my plate except the fat portion of the roasted pork. Promise!
Haven't I mentioned the pool yet? Maybe they could have you hold a pool party here! Hehehe!

Their pool looks good enough to please anyyone wanting a dip or swim. Honestly, I never expected this place to have a pool.

Going back to the Silka Green Papaya media launch of Angelica Panganiban as endorser, you have to admit that she has always been a headturner ever since she was a child, even still with those crooked baby teeth, she already got our attention as she truly stands out among the other kids you'll usually meet in the country.

I do hope I had that same confidence during my younger years, because honestly I was not this gregarious before. I was an introvert and so shy to join famiky gatherings, and would often keep inside my room when there are visitors at our home.

Now, whenever possible, I would always sit infront of big and crowded  events so I could get the best view of the stage, and if given the chance, ask them to do the iconic Wazzup Pilipinas shout-out.

"Pa shout-out ka ng shout-out, ikaw tuloy ang napapansin sa mga events. Attention grabber, scene stealer, noisemaker, ...ayan pati sa interviews ng iba naririnig yang pasigaw mo!"

Where am I getting the "kapal ng mukha" or I call it aggressiveness or some would say confidence to face people, even the head honchos or top management, senators, congressmen, celebrities, and business owners themseves.

For now, it's the beauty filter of the smartphones. Lol!

Seriously, I'd do everything for the opportunity to improve my complexion because my previously white complexion turned darker from all that travels where I get exposed under the sun for hours.

Hiking on hills, cliff and mountains. Walking the shores of beaches. Following festival parades and floats. These are just some of the reasons why my complexion went from fair to kayumanggi to almost "nognog" state.

But if it was possible to go back in time, I would not change a thing except use whitening products to maintain or bring back the complexion I once had. But it has to work fast because orobably after a week or two, I'll be off to my next adventure seeting foot to a new destination within or out of the country.

However, the whitening products back then involved "tiis ganda" sacrifices. We were like a snake peeling off old skin....and just applying the whitening product was already irritatingly "mahapdi" or painful. And we had to wait a long time to see some improvements on our skin. If patience is not one of your traits, then it will be like stuck inside your car in the middle of the road waiting for the traffic condition to go faster.

Now, Cosmetique Asia Corporation, makers of the new and improved Silka Green Papaya, boasts of as early as 7 days improvement. Since we all have different kinds of skin, working conditions, diet and exercise, the actual number of days you could see change in skin color may vary. But being a positive thinker could motivate your skin to cooperate too.

Two thumbs up for whitening as our global culture looks up to the fair complexioned

How I wish I've come in contact with the Silka peeps sooner before holding the recent Influencers Forum at the Megatrade Hall of SM Megamall. Co-organizing the event with ExLink Events as the opening program during their 10th year of the highly successful Philippine Business and Entrepreneurs Expo (PBEX2019).  Because I've seen the photos taken from the event, and it was very obvious that I was definitely darker in complexion compared to the majority of the panelists on stage. Though I've got sort of an advantage being the host also of the forum.

Needless to say, I would have appreciated it more if I had a lighter complexion. My photos would look better, the audience would have seen me blooming in more appealing radiance.

Of course, our confidence do get a boost when we look our best, and since mainstream media and the industries around us has looked up to whiter people as their preferred models, celebrities, influencers, naturally because they seem to shine vibrantly like the sun, especially when you smile with sincerity, and your eyes sparkle with glee.

We brought home Silka products: whitening soao, lotion, facial cleanser, deodorant and a foaming net ball

Well, thank you to to the brand for giving us some product samples to try home. Hoping they do work on me. So see you again after a week or so, and best of luck to me to get whiter at least before I celebrate my birthday this October 6.

Though I'll be celebrating my natal day in Boracay, so it would have been super if the brand also had a sunblock product.

Never worried here because just as how we've seen their new endorser Angelica Panganiban went through her colorful life in showbiz, she's again ready to love. Similarly, the Boracay sun may darken my skin again, I will have Silka Green Papaya ready to work faster in bringing out the best complexion of my skin.

Amazing Things You Didn't Know About Your Pet's Food

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Did you know that 80% of dog and cat owners have major misconceptions when it comes to their pet’s food? Pet food has been around a long time: it has a life, history, and fascinating bits of trivia that may surprise you.

Over 150 Years Of Nutritional Evolution

Commercial pet food has been around since 1860 when a guy named James Spratt from Ohio created a biscuit type dog food by carefully compounding a preparation of wheat meals, vegetables, beetroot, and meat to feed dogs on ships going between America and Europe. That’s over 150 years of nutritional evolution to help make your pet’s life better.

Your Pet Food Stinks

When it comes to dog food it’s not about taste. Humans have a strong sense of taste with around 9,000 taste buds compared to a dog’s average of about 1700 taste buds and cats with an average of about 470 taste buds, so it’s common for us humans to have the misconception that our pets feel the same way about the taste of what they are eating. Not so.

With our furry family it’s more about the smell, than the taste when it comes to grub. Dogs have about 125 million sensory cells in their noses, as opposed to us humans with our 5 to 10 million, so when your dog loves a food it’s not the flavor so much as the smell that gets that tail wagging or that kitten purring.

Gotta Keep It Fresh Yo’

Ever notice how excited your dogs and cats get when you open a fresh bag of food? Do they seem to lose interest over time? As foods age they lose their delicious aroma, so it’s important to keep your pet’s food fresh and smelling its best.

The average dry dog or cat food is at its peak for about a month after you crack that bag open, so be sure to keep the bag closed tight, or in a container with a proper lid to seal in that new food smell.

Starches Rock Your Kibble

Grain free does not mean starch free. Sometimes people get these two confused. Starchy vegetables like peas and garbanzo beans are important to dog and cat food because of their nutritional value and they help to bond the food together into those lovely little kibble shapes that are easy to scoop into a bowl and cats and dogs love to eat.

Highest Trending Pet Food Faux “Paw”

The most commonly made pet food mistake is overfeeding. Pudgy pets may look cute but it’s not good for them. More than half of our pet dogs and cats are overweight and that can lead to all sorts of health problems. Healthy weight can be supported by proper measurements and avoiding too many treats or human foods.

Do you have any questions about your pet’s food? Leave them in the comments below and we may answer your question in a future post. You may also read Vegan Dog Food article.

How Much Water Should a Dog Drink?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Some dogs approach their water bowls with enthusiasm, while others may need a bit of a push to drink their water. In either case, water is necessary to keep your dog healthy and to help your dog’s body function. Read on to learn how much water a dog should drink and how to keep a dog hydrated.

How Much Water is Enough?

The amount of water a dog should drink is dependent on how active they are, their breed size as well as the weather during the day. Generally, your dog should drink one ounce (30 ml) of water daily for each pound that he weighs.

If you’re exercising your dog, especially in warmer temperatures, your dog may need double the typical amount of water. Make sure you’re giving a small amount of water every 15 to 20 minutes to ensure he is hydrated while exercising.

How to Keep a Dog Hydrated

It’s important to make sure that fresh water is always available to your dog. This means making sure to refill your dog’s water bowl with fresh water multiple times a day.

If you find that your dog is reluctant to drink water, here are alternate ways to keep your dog hydrated and entice him to drink water:

Doggie Water Fountain. While most dogs enjoy drinking still water, a water fountain can encourage your dog to lap up some extra H2O during the day.

Ice Cubes. Yes, we know that ice cubes are just frozen water. However, some dogs much prefer licking a nice, cold, ice cube to drinking from their water bowl.

Add Water to Kibble. You can soak your dog’s kibble in water to ensure he’s getting the daily dose of hydration he needs.

Wash Bowls Daily. A dirty water bowl may have your dog turning his nose up at his water. Make sure to clean out your dog’s water bowl on a daily basis.

Switch to Wet Food. While wet food is not a complete replacement for water, it can help keep your dog hydrated. You can either switch to wet food completely or mix it in with your dog’s kibble.

Signs of Dehydration

If you’re worried that your dog isn’t getting enough water, there are two ways that you can check for dehydration.

Check his gums. Your dog’s gums should be moist and pink. If you find that they are dry and pale, he is most likely dehydrated.

Check his skin. Gently lift your dog’s skin at the back of his neck and let go of it. If your dog is well-hydrated, his skin should bounce back immediately to its original shape. A dehydrated dog’s skin is less elastic and takes more time to bounce back.

Also, be on the lookout for the following signs of dehydration:

Little to no energy

No interest in food

Dry mouth

Sunken eyes

If you have any concerns that your dog is dehydrated, make sure to offer him water immediately and contact your veterinarian. We hope these tips help keep your dog hydrated, healthy and happy!

Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi conducted bilateral meetings with Japan’s Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations Plus Three (ASEAN+3) members, during the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM37) held in Bangkok, Thailand from 2 to 6 September 2019.

For the Energy Secretary, the annual AMEM presents great opportunities to pursue bilateral talks with the country’s existing and potential energy partners within the region.

“AMEM37 enabled us to engage METI and MEMR on various mutual areas of interest, including energy investment opportunities and joint energy resource exploration and development activities. Given our shared borders, it is imperative that the ASEAN members jointly explore and harness available resources to ensure the region’s energy security and to benefit our people,” Secretary Cusi said.

Sec. Cusi thanked State Minister Yoshihiko Isozaki, head of the METI delegation, for the successful turnover of boom trucks to Philippine electric cooperatives granted by the Japanese Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) Bangsamoro Project.

Thereafter, the Energy Chief emphasized the relevance of Japan’s ongoing initiative on the Distributed Energy System (DES), that will promotes energy innovation and efficiency. He expressed the DOE’s interest to be part of METI’s program to evaluate the potential of island provinces and economic zones for DES power generation and electrification projects.

During the meeting with MEMR, headed by its Vice Minister, Dr. Arcandra Tahar, Secretary Cusi reiterated the country’s aspiration to become the LNG hub in the region, and underscored the need to assess existing development issues on the Philippine Downstream Natural Gas Regulations. Sec. Cusi also proposed the inclusion of Oil Exploration and Development as the 8th Sub-Sector Network in the updated ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation, and for the ASEAN Council on Petroleum. The proposal was welcomed and strongly supported by the Indonesian Vice Energy Minister because it aims to revisit its role as one of the main organizations within the ASEAN.

Joining the Energy Secretary for the two bilateral meetings were DOE Senior Undersecretary Jesus Cristino P. Posadas, Undersecretary Donato D. Marcos, Assistant Secretary Gerardo D. Erguiza Jr., DOE-Energy Policy and Planning Bureau (EPPB) Director Jesus T. Tamang, DOE-EPPB’s Energy Cooperation and Coordination Division Chief Lilian C. Fernandez, and other DOE-EPPB technical personnel.

“While our backgrounds and nationalities may differ on the surface, we share the goal of invigorating the intra-ASEAN energy relations. A united ASEAN in the energy sector is a crucial component in shaping ASEAN’s future,” Secretary Cusi concluded.
