Caring for Cotton Mattresses

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Cotton mattresses are a great investment for anyone who wants to join the green movement but is overwhelmed or not sure how to get started. For most people, mattress purchases are made only once every few years. When you decide to buy an organic cotton mattress instead of the usual mattress to buy, you can be assured that over the next few years, you have done at least one thing to protect the environment.

An organic cotton mattress is good for the environment in many ways. Farmers who grow organic crops do not use pesticides or other chemicals on their crops to kill pests or enlarge their crops. Cotton is one of the most widely grown crops in the world. It is also the most heavily sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals. As a result, by refusing to spray their cotton crop with pesticides and other chemicals, cotton producers have a huge impact on the levels of pollution that exist in the world today.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – Quick Solutions

The perfect habitat for bedbugs is areas where the climate tends to be hot and dry. Since humans are able to provide the environments that are most suitable for these creatures, such as heated and warm buildings, this part shows why these creatures were able to extend their reach far in colder northern climates.

What do bedbugs eat?

Bedbugs feed on blood and feed on you or your pets when you sleep. Bedbug bites are similar to other insect bites that cause itching, inflammation, and redness on the skin of the bitten person. One good thing is that tiny insects do not transmit harmful diseases to humans or animals, but for some people, a bed bug bite could potentially cause severe allergy symptoms that can lead to anaphylactic shock!

Here we discuss How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – Quick Solutions

Most insects are sensitive to temperature, and bedbugs are no different; they are sensitive to cold and heat. As a result, a safe and effective technique is to use the temperature to get rid of bedbug infestations. Pest control professionals use steam engines to Treat mattresses and furniture and cold gases on electronic equipment to kill the insects hidden inside.

First of all, reduce the clutter as much as possible so that you can find these blood-sucking critters with less effort. Once you find them, use a vacuum cleaner to clean blankets, fabric items, plush toys, clothes, jackets ... Wash them at about 160 degrees Fahrenheit of hot water to get rid of insects that the vacuum cleaner did not get and also kill too few eggs or hatchlings to see which might be on your clothes.

Then separate your mattress and box spring, separate your bed frame to reveal all the crevices in which insects can hide. Vacuum these areas with a product like Eco Living Friendly or All-Stop-Contact-Killing-Spray, which are non-toxic ecological bed bug killers.

Unlike pesticides, these insect treatment products are 100% environmentally friendly and harmless to use around children and pets, hospitals, hotels, your workplace, and of course, your home or your apartment. They are specially formulated from natural ingredients and are premixed so you can use them immediately. In addition, they are also effective in combating scabies, mites, lice, fleas, and other insect problems.

Now focus on your mattress and box spring; check each item for tears or openings as they allow the bedbugs to live and reproduce. If these creatures are hiding in your mattress and/or box spring, what would normally be done is to use a regulated pesticide to kill them; but since there are restrictions on the use of pesticides, a better alternative will be to use a mattress cover and a box spring cover that will completely seal your mattress and box spring. You can also spray these things with the natural products mentioned above, and when you dry seal them with the right lid.

Since these insects like to live in cracks and crevices, it is advisable to seal the holes in your home that provide access or allow bedbugs to live in these spaces. Use caulk to seal cracks in walls, baseboards, voids around windows, and pipes that could allow insects to enter your home; be sure to check the moldings as these narrow spots are perfect nesting sites for bedbugs.

Contour memory foam pillow

Time is our most precious commodity. So when you consider that we spend a third of our lives sleeping and that third plays a central role in how we live the balance of our time, sleep should be a primary goal - it affects everything.

One of the easiest ways to improve your quality of sleep is to change the way you sleep. You can do this by using a contour memory foam pillow instead of your standard feather pillow.

They promote alignment. Memory foam pillows - especially the contoured variety - allow your neck and spine to sit for perfect alignment. This, in turn, allows the muscles and associated tendons to relax, allowing you to wake up refreshed with less pain.

They help you stop snoring. Sure, we talked about YOUR sleep, but what about your partner's sleep or the apartment below you? Memory foam pillows both conform to your unique shape and cover your head, allowing your head to sit instead of tilting up as with your standard pillow. This keeps the airways clear, promoting sleep without snoring.

Reduces pressure points. Supportive memory foam pillows provide a more balanced weight distribution while you sleep, which means that part of the body does not support excessive pressure throughout the night as with standard pillows. Again, this results in less pain.

Growing Business: 6 Factors to Consider While Growing Globally

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Starting a business from the ground up is no easy feat. It can take years to reach a stable point in your operations, whether you create products, offer creative services, or manage a team of experts.

Almost every new business owner’s dream is to take their company to the next level and reach more customers. Eventually, there will come a time when you’ve reached the potential to scale globally. Back in the day, this was such a difficult task to accomplish. It entailed flying in and out of different countries before you can operate.

Now, however, closing a business deal is much faster. With the technology this era brings, expanding your services and catering to an international audience just got more convenient. You’ll never get the legalities out of the way, but setting up meetings and outsourcing your staff has become possible. Such practices have allowed companies to ramp up their efforts in growing their business.

But before you completely embrace the digital age and dive headfirst into your dream of expanding your business overseas, it’s worth taking a look at some critical factors when it comes to going global. Below are a few.

1. Language, culture, and practices of your new market

In an ideal world, your product or services are universally applicable to all cultures and races. The truth is there are a lot of nuances when it comes to these aspects. You will have to study it properly before marketing and positioning your product.

As with the case of language, it will be beneficial if you can hire bilingual staff members, full-time translators, or outsourced an employee for that position to help you communicate properly with your new region. Understanding the cultural and lingual differences in a country is the key to penetrating their market successfully. Don’t expect that your promotional efforts in one place will work equally across the globe.

2. International compliance, laws, and regulations

There’s so much to study when you start operating on foreign soil to the point that it can be a bit intimidating. Things like tax codes, business regulations, packaging standards, and all the legal paperwork can make your head hurt, much like how it went when you were first setting up your business.

It can take months to set up your corporation depending on the requirements that each country, state, or city will ask for, so be ready for this challenge. It’s worth seeking help from business partners who operate in the same location. They can accurately illustrate the economy and business landscape of the country you’re trying to set up your company in.

3. Packaging, shipping, and logistics

If your business sells a tangible product, chances are it will be produced in one major hub or headquarters. This will then have to be transported to the countries you operate in—all of which have different requirements. This means getting a reliable partner who can process all the specifications according to its destination.

You would also need a business shipping container to transport your goods from one port to another safely—sealed, free from damages, and ready for sale. This adds to your overall packaging and production cost, as each country will have different demands when it comes to allowing you to sell your item.

4. Facing local and international competition

It’s safe to assume that your product won’t be the first of its kind to enter your foreign market. Perhaps the country has a local business running the same thing, or other international companies have explored and invested in the same place before you.

Study how they run things and how successful they’re currently doing so that you can benchmark your company’s performance. It will allow you to think of creative ways to surpass your industry rivals.

There’s also the case of earning the trust of your new market. Being a new player in the game will put you at a disadvantage in the beginning. But with the right analyses of trends, you should be able to see your numbers slowly rising.

5. The different pace of growth

Speaking of “numbers slowly rising,” it’s important to note that there’s no way to accurately predict how fast your company will click in a different country.

You may be doing so well in Asia but realize that the US or European markets are a bit harder to conquer. This is normal and doesn’t immediately spell out bad news for your company. Perhaps this means you should look into more ways you can position or market your product in its new location.

6. Increase in overall business operational cost

Financial gains and broader market opportunities are what encourage business owners to venture into global expansion. While this is true, keep in mind that the more places you operate in, the more money your company will bleed out.

Financial preparedness is necessary when it comes to taking the first few steps into going global. Up until your company finds footing in a new territory, you should be anticipating massive expenses that will be poured into establishing your company in a new location.

Knowing is Half the Battle

Familiarizing yourself with the different challenges that businesses encounter when it comes to global expansion can help you become more prepared for the time when you want to push forward with this strategy.

It can even be a good idea to visit and stay in the country you want to operate in to gather more info about the country. Before making any significant decisions, run them by your team and think of all possible outcomes, so you can better prepare yourself for emergencies or the unexpected fast pace of growth.

You can overcome these struggles with the help of reliable business partners and hiring team members whom you trust can carry out your business goals. It cannot be stressed enough that you can’t do this alone. Tap the help of your international business partners or locals from the area you wish to expand so that they can give you more insight into what your company may face.

FEU Student Film “Grasya” Competes in Tunisia

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A short film, which is about a political family trying to make use of their household help’s pregnancy to bolster the patriarch’s campaign, will compete in the WOW International Film Festival at the Maison De Culture Ibn Zaydoun in Tunisia from March 2 to 8, 2020.

“Grasya,” a film directed by recent Far Eastern University Communication graduate Audrey Vicencio, has been officially selected out of 3,150 films from 119 countries that the film festival has received.

In the film, which was produced as a requirement for their Cinema Production or CNM2 class, the family matriarch (Tanie Lambohon Capiral) finds out that their housekeeper (Hannah Pelobello) is pregnant. The latter claims that she is pregnant with God's child. The family plans to use her as part of their election campaign amid the protest of their eldest son (AJ Sison). Pelobello and Sison are both members of the FEU Theater Guild. The late Anjo Padilla played the role of the patriarch in one of his last films.

“The whole experience was an experiment. The story itself was far from ordinary. It challenged me in terms of how I will show the story in a way that ‘this’ can happen or ‘what if’ it is happening,” Vicencio, who also served as Chief Photographer of the school’s official student publication FEU Advocate, shared.

“To add a concept that the household is a metaphor of the government here in the Philippines pushed me to dig deeper in their characterization and to show it as realistic as possible,” the filmmaker added.

Vicencio collaborated with her CNM2 classmates, director of photography, editor, storyboard artist and colorist Andrew Kyle Aquino, producer and production manager Shaina Xena Legaspi, writer and assistant director Patricia Rigodon, assistant camerawoman Ramri Rivota, production designers Maurich Macatangay, Donita Borre, Melbrick Renz Morillo, Valerie Ann Manalo and Diospyrus Levi Barros, casting directors Yvonne Baltazar and Barros, and script continuity supervisor Angelica Altera.

Festival director Elmahdi Souissi revealed that the organizers want “to project films around the theme of women” to honor them through the event.

Apart from being an opportunity to meet filmmakers and producers from different nationalities, the event also aims to promote art and cultural tourism to build a way for the future film collaborations.

The film festival will award the Best Feature Film, Best Short Fiction Film, Best Direction for Fiction Film, Best Documentary, Best Animation and other prizes.

“Grasya” also competed at the Josiah Media Festival in San Antonio, Texas, USA last October 17, Africa International Film Festival in Lagos, Nigeria last November 10, and The Lift-Off Sessions in Pinewood Studios last December 8.

Construction of Metro Manila Subway Project Formally Starts with Site Clearing Works at Valenzuela Depot

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The dream of giving the country its first-ever subway or underground railway system finally pushes into reality as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) formally starts with clearing works in the Partial Operability (PO) Section of the Metro Manila Subway Project.

The Partial Operability Section of the subway comprises the first stations in Valenzuela City and Quezon City, the line's depot in Valenzuela City, and buildings for the Philippine Railway Institute (PRI), the country's first-ever railway training center.

A ceremony to formalize the start of the subway's construction was held at the depot site in Barangay Ugong in Valenzuela City today, 21 December 2019. The depot site is also where the subway line's East Valenzuela Station will be located.

Dubbed as the “Project of the Century,” the underground rail line is expected to serve 370,000 passengers daily in its first year of full operations, and is targeted to be partially operable by 2021.

Once completed and fully operational, the Metro Manila Subway Project will have a total of 15 stations, including a terminal station at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Part of the ceremony was the distribution of checks and the signing of deeds of absolute sale with project-affected landowners, as well as a testimonial video presentation of project-affected informal settler families that have already been relocated to Valenzuela’s Disiplina Village.

This formal start of clearing operations at the subway's Valenzuela depot is part of DOTr’s continuing efforts to muster all factors needed in building the underground railway project and in dealing with right-of-way acquisition issues.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade, who led the ceremony, noted the progress in the right-of-way acquisition both in terms of acquiring land from legal owners and relocation of informal settler families.

A total of 460 lots are required for the partial operability section of the subway, out of which 364 offers to buy have already been issued based on current market value appraised by Landbank.

Owners of 285 lots out of the 364 lots that the government had already offered to buy, have accepted or are already completing documentation requirements for selling their properties to the government for the project.

A batch of project-affected landowners were present during the ceremony and received their check payments.

As for informal settler families, 178 out of 183 affected families have already been resettled to a better and safer location in Disiplina Village in Barangay Bignay, Valenzuela City with the support of the Valenzuela City local government.

“This gathering today is the primodial trigger to be able to start the subway. That is why this gathering is important. Wala naman ‘hong proyektong mai-implement kung ‘yung babagtasin mo na daan ay hindi pa nasolusyunan. Ngayong araw na ‘hong ito ang signal na para bang sinasabi nating parating na ang subway,” Secretary Tugade expressed.

Following the official transfer of the properties from the landowners to the DOTr, contractors then started the clearing and fencing of portions of the depot.

“With our funding in place, contractor signed-up, detailed designs completed, and right-of-way substantially acquired, and under the strong willed leadership of our leader, Secretary Arthur Tugade, partial operability of the Duterte Administration's flagship Metro Manila Subway Project is on track to delivering its promise of a more comfortable life to every Filipino,” DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan said in his message.

“Write About Love” Holds Campus Tour

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Miles Ocampo, Rocco Nacino, Yeng Constantino and Joem Bascon recently visited different campuses, aside from conducting the usual mall tours and TV guestings, to promote their new film “Write About Love” with director Crisanto Aquino, producer Lexter Tarriela, editor Vanessa de Leon and the TBA Studios team.

“Write About Love,” one of the eight finalists in the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival, is a romantic comedy about a newbie (Ocampo) and an experienced writer (Nacino) who, despite their clashing personalities and different perspectives, collaborated in finishing a script. “Just Us,” the story they are working on, is about a couple (Constantino and Bascon) who is struggling to sustain their relationship.

Written by Aquino and Janyx Regalo, “Write About Love” takes a closer look into how film scripts are made and how writers deal with their personal issues while doing their scripts.

The film’s cast and crew visited Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Barcelona Academy in Marilao, Bulacan State University, University of the East-Caloocan, St. Dominic College of Asia, Manila Tytana Colleges, Centro Escolar University-Manila, Adamson University and University of Makati, among others.

The team shared tips and insights about filmmaking and scriptwriting to students. They entertained questions from the audience and encouraged them to watch their film. As an added treat, they also chose and read love letters written by members of the audience as part of their promotional tour.

“Writing love letters was an idea of the TBA team to give our millennial/student audience a medium to express their love to anyone or anything,” Aquino shared. The writer-director revealed that he was overwhelmed by the love letters they have received from them. “We read letters on different kinds of love – about family, friends, relationships, or even secret love,” he added.

“What really surprised me was a letter I read from a female senior high school student. She was really devastated. I decided not to read her name and that of the guy. The audience were quiet after I read the letter. It’s serious and painful. I told the students that pain is always there when we love, and we need to be strong. I announced that whoever made the letter should meet me backstage after the program. I met her, hugged her, and talked to her the best way I can. I hope I made her feel better,” he disclosed.

On the other hand, SDCA student Ryle Sofe, whose love letter was read in one of the tour stopovers, did not expect his note to be personally chosen by Nacino himself. “He read all the entries, but my letter captivated him. When they were holding the papers, I knew that the paper that Rocco was holding was mine because it was the only paper that was crumpled and the only one written with blue ink,” he said.

“Instead of writing the usual letter, I came up with a romantic poem that details my everyday moments with my crush. At the end of the poem is a stanza that’s telling my crush that I’m fine with us just being friends. I knew it would strike a chord with a lot of students,” the BA Communication sophomore said.

“My heart jumped, and when he started reading it, I felt proud of myself and honored. I was so happy seeing the audience react to every sentence that they’re hearing from my letter. I felt like it was a small success, but I felt so happy,” Sofe concluded.

“Write About Love” opened in cinemas nationwide last December 25 as part of the Metro Manila Film Festival.

FEU Film Tops Zamboanga Fest

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A student film from Far Eastern University bagged the top prize and two other awards in the Pluma de Paz main competition of the 3rd Festival de Cine Paz Mindanao held during the Mindanao Week of Peace celebration this month at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University-Lantaka Campus.

“Sa Gabing Tanging Liwanag ay Paniniwala” (Belief as the Light in Darkness), which was directed by Francis Guillermo as a Cinema Production or CNM2 project at FEU, got the Pluma de Oro award for Best Film, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Design at the annual national film festival in Zamboanga City.

The short film is about a local chieftain (Soliman Cruz) and his son (Dylan Ray Talon) who investigate the disappearances of the townspeople in the woods only to come across a mysterious answer.

Guillermo was congratulated by his acquaintances from the Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition, but he had no idea what they were for as he was not able to attend the festival to claim his award personally. He only learned about it when the organizers posted the list of winners on social media.

“I’m pretty sure it was a very successful festival and I hope to experience the festival in person in the future. I’m very thankful to Ryanne Murcia, the festival director, and the team for having the film in their festival,” he said.

Guillermo, who graduated with a Communication degree and previously served as president of the FEU Film Society, was ably supported by his CNM2 groupmates, assistant director Ipe Maglalang, production manager Ariana Yanice Napay, line producer Patrizsia Reyes, production designer Ron Alos, and location manager James Manalili, among others. They were assisted by director of photography Rommel Ruiz and editor Zaire Andrade. Maglalang, Napay, Reyes, Ruiz and Andrade are also FEU Filmsoc alumni.

The film previously competed at Cinemalaya at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last August. It won Best Cinematography at Pelikultura: The Calabarzon Film Festival last February, Best Production Design and Best Sound Design at Nabifilmex in Compostela Valley last September, and honorable mention at the 30th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video short feature category last year.

In addition, it also bagged Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Sound Design at the Indie Un-Film Festival 2018 Pamana category (De La Salle University-Manila), the Cardinal Bronze Film award, Best in Sound and Music, and Best Performance of an Actor for Cruz at the CineMapúa intercollegiate category (Mapúa University), and 2nd Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design at the Sinepiyu XI Black Reel category (FEU).

Showcasing the different stories and faces of peace, Festival de Cine Paz Mindanao aims to support and strengthen its vision of sustaining the journey for peace by exploring its different dimensions, expressions, and forms through the cinematic medium.

Organized and presented by AdZU, Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance, Inc., Peace Advocate Zamboanga, and Joint Task Force Zamboanga, the event is also supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the City Government of Zamboanga.
