Wazzup Pilipinas!?
In an era where the climate crisis demands more than just promises, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is transforming the very landscape of the Philippines. Far from just building structures, they are engineering a low-carbon revolution, turning sprawling urban hubs into bastions of sustainability and resilience.
A Legacy of Efficiency: The Silent Revolution
The journey toward a cleaner future didn't begin yesterday. Since the 1990s, SM Prime has been engaged in a meticulous mission to optimize every kilowatt. By upgrading lighting, refining building management systems, and overhaulng air conditioning and ventilation (ACVS), they have proven that environmental stewardship and economic brilliance are two sides of the same coin.
The impact of these efforts is nothing short of staggering. In 2024 alone, SM Supermalls achieved:
38% reduction in electricity consumption.
156,736 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions avoided.
₱2.3 billion in massive cost savings.
This dedication has not gone unnoticed. At the 5th Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards by the Department of Energy, SM Prime’s various business units—including hotels and offices—were honored with multiple Certificates of Excellence.
Chasing the Sun: The 100MW Milestone
SM Prime isn't just saving energy; they are harvesting it from the sky. Guided by a bold Net Zero by 2040 goal, the company has turned its rooftops into power plants.
At SM City North Edsa—the pioneer of Philippine solar-powered malls—SM Prime recently celebrated a historic achievement: 100 megawatts (MW) of combined on-site renewable energy across 59 properties. Today, over 50% of the energy powering SM Supermalls comes from renewable sources, bolstered by strategic alliances with giants like Aboitiz Renewables and Citicore.
Architecture in Harmony with Nature
The "Smarter Future" is also a more beautiful one. SM Prime is moving beyond heavy machinery to embrace passive design. By integrating high ceilings, expansive atriums, and natural skylights, their malls breathe with the environment.
Natural Illumination: Large glass windows and skylights, such as those in SM City East Ortigas, reduce the need for daytime artificial lighting.
Smart Technology: Motion-sensor escalators and solar-powered outdoor spaces ensure that energy is only used when and where it is needed.
"Brands—whether big luxury labels or small and medium enterprises—are looking for partners who invest in circularity and ESG impacts," says Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls.
A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Tomorrow
Through the SM Green Movement, the company is building more than just malls; it is building a resilient energy infrastructure for the community. By collaborating with WWF-Philippines and committing to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), SM Prime is ensuring that its growth never comes at the cost of the planet.
As they continue to scale these programs, the goal remains clear: to improve the quality of life for every Filipino while protecting the world we share.
