UP mathematicians find safer contraceptive hormone doses

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The amount of hormones in contraceptives can be reduced by as much as 92% without impacting their effectiveness, new math research from the University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) has found.

Using mathematical models, researchers from the UPD-CS institute of Mathematics have found that contraceptives can still remain effective despite reducing their hormone content by as much as 92%. (Photo credit: Towfiqu Barbhuiya /

Most contraceptives available today contain either or both estrogen and progesterone hormones to block ovulation, the phase of the menstrual cycle wherein an egg is released into the uterus. But while effective, hormonal contraception has its drawbacks: an increased potential for blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, mood disorders, and other health risks.

UPD-CS Institute of Mathematics (UPD-CS IM) Ph.D. Mathematics graduate Brenda Lyn Gavina and Associate Professor Dr. Aurelio de los Reyes V, alongside collaborators Dr. Mette Olufsen of North Carolina State University, Dr. Suzanne Lenhart of the University of Tennessee, and Dr. Johnny Ottesen of the Roskilde University of Denmark, analyzed the hormone levels of 23 women aged 20 to 34 years old with regular menstrual cycles. Their research revealed that estrogen-only contraceptives could work just as effectively even if hormone doses were reduced by as much as 92%. Meanwhile, hormone doses in progesterone-only contraceptives could be decreased by as much as 43% while still achieving the same effectivity.

In their study, the researchers developed a modified menstrual cycle model to track natural hormone levels and the effect of hormones taken through contraceptives. They then applied mathematics to determine the lowest amount of hormones needed to prevent ovulation. Apart from finding lower yet effective hormone dosages, they also found that intaking these contraceptives before the tenth day of the menstrual cycle is just as effective in preventing pregnancy as a daily dose.

The study opens new avenues for further research in hormonal birth control. “With the rapid development of new implants and injections providing continuous administration, there is great potential to implement new treatment scheme minimizing dose,” the researchers concluded in their study, published last April 13 in the journal PLoS Computational Biology.

“Reducing the dosage of hormonal contraceptives has been a longstanding objective of safer contraception. Our modeling/computational study suggests an effective and cost-efficient hormonal contraceptive administration.” Dr. de los Reyes said. “We also hope to build on the current model to investigate reproductive health concerns in women like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and ovarian cysts. We would like to caution that our model is not directly translatable to clinical setup (or actual patients) as of yet, but the principles and its proof of concept could be potentially implemented to achieve safe and cost-efficient contraception.”

Researchers from the UP Diliman College of Science’s Institute of Mathematics, working alongside international colleagues, have found that the hormone levels in contraceptives could be cut by as much as 92% without impacting their effectiveness. (Photo credit: Aurelio de los Reyes V et al.)

Instituto Cervantes’ May Online Film Series explores Contemporary Rural Life and New Migration Trends

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In the month of May, Instituto Cervantes de Manila is presenting on its Vimeo channel an online film series exploring the contemporary rural life of Spain and the new migration trends between cities and rural spaces. Entitled "Geolocalizations and New Ruralities", this series of four documentaries proposes new ways of understanding rural communities, and the challenges and opportunities brought by the socioeconomic change.

Over the past two centuries, rural life has undergone countless modifications, much like urban life. Migration has depopulated vast agricultural areas, with younger inhabitants moving to cities to forge their futures, often in foreign lands. However, in recent times, a new desire has emerged to recapture the elements of well-being that rural environments offer to people and communities. Life outside of the hectic urban pace has emerged as an alternative model of sustainability and coexistence, proposing another way to repopulate rural spaces.

To illustrate these new trends, the Instituto Cervantes presents an online film program with four documentaries that bring us closer to life stories in the countryside from four very different points in the Spanish geography. These four stories open a window to the lights and shadows of this way of life and collect a contemporary perspective on traditions, as well as the problems that maintaining these new future investments entails.

The complete program is available on Instituto Cervantes’ Vimeo channel:

The series will kick off on May 6th, Saturday, with the screening of Soñando un lugar (2018), by Alfonso Kint (freely available for 48 hours through the link This documentary film shows us firsthand the most attractive aspects of life in a depopulated village in Spain, as well as the problems faced by the inhabitants of these nearly forgotten towns.

On May 13th and 14th, Os fillos da vide (2017), by Ana Domínguez, will be showcased on the channel. If you want to learn about the most ancestral Spanish traditions and everything about our country's wine, don't miss this film in which the director Ana Domínguez shows us a piece of her childhood through the grape harvest and festivities of her hometown in Galicia. You will fall in love with their millennial culture, its people, and its landscapes! (Link to the film:

The third film of the cycle, 150 i una Grossa (2020), by Aurora Sulli and Núria Deulofeu, takes us to Ametlla de Merola, one of the smallest towns in Catalonia with just over 150 inhabitants. The town's central core is its theater, but due to lack of resources, it must close down. Everything changes when the town wins the Christmas lottery and the residents decide to use the winnings to refurbish the theater and prevent it from disappearing. The film will be freely available for 48 hours on May 20th and 21st through the link

Finally, on May 27th and 28th, the film cycle will come to an end with Los saldos (link: In this documentary, released in 2022, filmmaker Raúl Capdevila bids farewell to the rural world, which seems destined for disappearance due to the fast pace of modern life. The film tells the story of his return home and how he and his father face the forced industrialization of their town in the form of a Western-style tale.

The films, presented by Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, will have English subtitles. Admission is free. For further information and updates on this film series, please check out Instituto Cervantes’ Facebook site ( or the event page:

The Future of NFTs: Decentralized, Immutable, and Interoperable Digital Assets

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital assets that are unique and non-interchangeable. Unlike traditional cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum, which can be easily exchanged for one another, each NFT is entirely unique and cannot be replaced by another token.

This uniqueness makes NFTs ideal for representing digital assets such as photos, videos, or pieces of art, which can then be bought, sold, or traded like any other physical asset.

The popularity of NFTs has exploded in recent months, with new platforms and marketplaces popping up to cater to the growing demand. The total value of all NFTs sold in 2020 surpassed $250 million, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

What are the implications of this growing popularity? In this article, we'll explore the future of NFTs and how they could shape the digital landscape.

The Potential of NFTs:

1. Decentralized:

One of the most appealing aspects of NFTs is that they are decentralized. Because they are built on blockchain technology, they are not subject to the whims of central authorities or intermediaries. This makes them more resistant to censorship and manipulation and gives users more control over their assets.

2. Immutable:

Another key feature of NFTs is that they are immutable. Once an NFT is created, it cannot be changed or destroyed. This makes them ideal for storing valuable digital assets like art, music, or videos.

3. Interoperable:

NFTs are also interoperable, meaning they can be used across different platforms and applications. This allows for a greater degree of flexibility and opens up new possibilities for how they can be used.

4. Programmable:

Because NFTs are built on blockchain technology, they can be programmed to do certain things. For example, an NFT could be programmed to grant its owner access to a digital asset or service. Or it could be used to represent a physical object like a ticket or a key.

5. Secure:

NFTs are also much more secure than traditional digital assets. Because they are stored on the blockchain, they are incredibly difficult to counterfeit or tamper with. This makes them ideal for storing valuable or sensitive information.

6. Transparent:

The immutability of NFTs also makes them more transparent than traditional assets. Because all transactions are recorded on the blockchain, they are visible to everyone. This increased transparency could help to reduce fraud and corruption.

7. Decentralized exchanges:

As NFTs become more popular, it's likely that decentralized exchanges will emerge to allow users to trade them directly with one another. This would further increase the flexibility and utility of NFTs.

8. Increased adoption:

As NFTs become more mainstream, we will likely see increased adoption by businesses and organizations. We could see NFTs being used to represent ownership of real-world assets like property or vehicles. Or they could be used as loyalty points or rewards for customers.

9. New business models:

The increasing popularity of NFTs will also create new opportunities for businesses. For example, we could see the emergence of NFT marketplaces where people can buy and sell digital assets. Or we could see the development of platforms that allow people to create and trade their own NFTs.

10. The future of NFTs:

The potential applications of NFTs are vast and varied. In the coming years, we are likely to see continued growth in this nascent industry as more people discover the benefits of these unique digital assets. As adoption increases, we will begin to see even more innovative uses for NFTs that we can't even imagine today. So what does the future hold for NFTs? Only time will tell.

What are NFTs?

NFTs are digital assets that are unique and cannot be replaced. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are interchangeable, each NFT is unique. This makes them ideal for collectibles, gaming, and other applications where ownership and provenance are important.

NFTs are a new type of digital asset that have many advantages over other assets, such as cryptocurrencies. However, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed before they can reach their full potential. Nonetheless, the future of NFTs looks bright and they could revolutionize the way we own and trade digital assets.

Expressing Our Gratitude: Honoring Our Healthcare Heroes

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In times of crisis, especially what we experienced as a nation during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there emerged unsung heroes who worked tirelessly to safeguard our well-being and protect the essence of life itself.

The healthcare sector has some of the most dangerous workplace conditions. Health workers are routinely exposed to various health and safety hazards, such as disease-causing organisms, radiation, and chemicals.

During times of illness and adversity, healthcare workers, comprising doctors, nurses, paramedics, and countless others, have always been our guiding lights. Their unwavering empathy, tireless commitment to caring for the sick and injured, and their relentless pursuit of knowledge make them the resilient pillars of compassion in the Philippines.

Only health workers can run health systems, and their availability is crucial for increasing healthcare coverage and attaining the right to enjoy the greatest possible level of health.

Every May 7, we recognize our health workers' valuable contributions, sacrifices, and commitment. By virtue of Republic Act 10069, the law declared May 7 of every year as Health Workers Day to give due recognition to the important role and contribution of the health workers who provide vital health services to the people and to promote their rights and welfare and enhance their sense of worth and dignity.

In line with the observance, here are ways we can thank our health workers or our HEALTHCARE HEROES:

1. Post about them on social media
It can be a short video or a thank-you note. Your social media post can give health workers the inspiration they need to get through this trying time.

2. Thank them
Thank a health worker who has gone above and beyond for your loved one. Your words can make their day better and serve as a gentle reminder that helping others is what they do for a living.

If you don't let them know, they might not know how much the job they perform each day is greatly appreciated.

3. Offer Help
You may support a healthcare hero you know by assisting them with various tasks, whether they are a close friend or neighbor. They can be too busy to do occasional tasks since they work more hours and additional shifts.

4. Stay safe and healthy!
Staying safe and healthy is the best way to support our health workers. The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. We must continue to get vaccinated, mask up, sanitize hands, and practice physical distancing.

The Philippine Government ensures that health workers are well compensated for their hard work. Last February 2023, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. instructed the Department of Health (DOH) to continue giving allowances to healthcare workers even after the state of calamity expiration due to the COVID-19 pandemic declared in 2020.

To encourage health workers in public and private facilities to remain in the Philippines, the DOH also proposes standardizing compensation and enhancing their benefits.

Our country is fortunate to have health workers who are compassionate warriors, healers in white coats, and dedicated souls who stand at the forefront of healthcare.

From the bustling emergency rooms in private hospitals, to public hospital wards, healthcare workers have continously faced the challenges of pandemics, emergencies, and everyday ailments with unwavering determination and dedication. It is time to express our profound gratitude and acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of these selfless individuals. The Philippine Information Agency extends its snappy salute!

Why Sex Sells in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The concept of "sex sells" has been a marketing tactic for decades, if not centuries. From magazine covers to commercials, we see sexual imagery used to sell everything from cars to clothing to perfume. But why is it that sex sells? In this article, we will explore the psychological and biological reasons why sex is such a powerful tool in advertising.Sexual desire is a primal instinct.

Sexual desire is one of the most basic, primal instincts that we have as human beings. It is a natural urge that drives us to seek out sexual experiences and relationships. When we see sexual imagery, it taps into this primal instinct and triggers a response in our brains that can make us more receptive to the message being conveyed.Sexual imagery creates emotional arousal.

When we see sexual imagery, it can create a sense of emotional arousal within us. Our brains release neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which can make us feel good and even euphoric. This emotional arousal can then be associated with the product being advertised, making us more likely to remember it and even make a purchase.Sexual imagery is attention-grabbing.

Sexual imagery is inherently attention-grabbing. Our brains are wired to pay attention to things that are visually stimulating, and sexual imagery certainly fits the bill. When we see a sexual image, our brains are immediately drawn to it, making us more likely to pay attention to the message being conveyed.Sexual imagery is memorable.

Sexual imagery is often highly memorable. When we see a sexual image, it can create a strong emotional response within us that makes it more likely to stick in our minds. This is why advertisers often use sexual imagery in their ads – because they know that it will be more likely to be remembered by viewers.Sexual imagery taps into our fantasies.

Sexual imagery can tap into our deepest fantasies and desires. When we see a sexual image, it can evoke a sense of longing within us that makes us more receptive to the message being conveyed. This is particularly true when the sexual imagery is suggestive rather than explicit, as it leaves more room for interpretation and allows viewers to project their own desires onto the image.Sexual imagery can create a sense of social status.

Sexual imagery can also create a sense of social status. When we see images of attractive, sexually desirable people, we may associate them with wealth, success, and popularity. By using sexual imagery in their ads, marketers can tap into these associations and create a sense of social status around their products.

The use of sexual imagery in advertising is a powerful tactic that has been used for decades. It taps into our primal instincts, creates emotional arousal, grabs our attention, is memorable, taps into our fantasies, and can create a sense of social status. While the use of sexual imagery in advertising may be controversial, there is no denying its effectiveness in grabbing and holding our attention.

However, it's important to note that the use of sexual imagery in advertising is not without its drawbacks. One major criticism of the tactic is that it objectifies and commodifies the human body, particularly women's bodies. This can perpetuate harmful societal attitudes towards women and contribute to the normalization of sexual harassment and assault.

Moreover, using sexual imagery in advertising can also backfire if it's not done appropriately. If an ad is perceived as overly sexual or exploitative, it can damage the brand's reputation and turn consumers away. It's important for advertisers to strike a balance between using sexual imagery to grab attention and being tasteful and respectful in how it's presented.

In conclusion, while the use of sexual imagery in advertising has been proven to be effective, it's important to consider the potential negative impacts and approach it with caution. As consumers, we should be critical of the messages being conveyed in advertising and question whether the use of sexual imagery is appropriate or necessary. As advertisers, we should be mindful of the potential harm and aim to use sexual imagery in a responsible and respectful way.

Do Filipinos patronize sex as a Marketing strategy

Sexual marketing strategies are not uncommon in the Philippines, as they are used in advertising and media in many parts of the world. However, the degree to which Filipinos patronize these strategies may vary depending on a number of factors, including cultural and societal values.

The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic country with conservative views on sexuality and modesty, and this can influence how sexual marketing strategies are received by the public. While sexual imagery is not necessarily taboo in the Philippines, there may be greater scrutiny on how it is used and whether it is seen as appropriate or not.

Moreover, the Advertising Standards Council of the Philippines (ASC) has guidelines in place to regulate advertising practices and ensure that they are socially responsible. These guidelines prohibit advertisements from using explicit sexual content or exploiting women and children.

In recent years, there have been some controversies in the Philippines involving sexual marketing strategies. For example, a billboard advertising a clothing brand featuring a woman in a provocative pose was taken down after it was deemed inappropriate by the local government. Additionally, a video advertisement for a popular fast food chain was criticized for its suggestive content and objectification of women.

Overall, while sexual marketing strategies are not unheard of in the Philippines, the cultural and societal values of the country may influence how they are received and whether they are seen as appropriate or not. The ASC guidelines also play a role in regulating advertising practices to ensure that they are socially responsible.

Cancel Culture in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Cancel culture is a phenomenon that has gained a lot of attention in recent years. It refers to the practice of boycotting, shaming, or socially ostracizing individuals or organizations that have done something considered unacceptable or offensive. Cancel culture is often used as a tool to hold people accountable for their actions and to bring about social change. However, it has also been criticized for being too extreme and for stifling free speech.

What is Cancel Culture?

Cancel culture is a term used to describe the practice of public shaming and boycotting of individuals, companies, or institutions who have been accused of behaving in ways that are deemed offensive or inappropriate by certain groups. It often involves a call to boycott or cancel the person or organization in question, meaning to stop supporting them or engaging with them in any way.

The rise of cancel culture is often attributed to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which make it easier for people to organize and amplify their voices. Cancel culture has been used to address issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination. However, it has also been criticized for being too extreme and for stifling free speech.

Examples of Cancel Culture:

One of the most high-profile examples of cancel culture is the case of comedian Louis CK. In 2017, CK was accused of sexual misconduct by several women. As a result, many of his upcoming shows were canceled, and his TV show was removed from streaming services. CK later admitted to the allegations and apologized for his behavior.

Another example is that of Kevin Hart, who was scheduled to host the 2019 Academy Awards but stepped down after old tweets resurfaced in which he made homophobic comments. Hart initially refused to apologize, but eventually did so after public pressure mounted.

In 2020, several companies faced boycotts and calls for cancellation over their responses to the Black Lives Matter protests. For example, Goya Foods faced a backlash after its CEO praised former President Donald Trump, leading to calls for a boycott of the company's products.

Pros and Cons of Cancel Culture:

Proponents of cancel culture argue that it is a necessary tool for holding people and organizations accountable for their actions. It can be a powerful way to bring about social change and to create a more inclusive and tolerant society.

However, critics argue that cancel culture is often taken too far and can lead to a culture of fear and self-censorship. It can be used to silence dissenting opinions and stifle free speech, which is a cornerstone of democracy. Critics also argue that cancel culture can be used to unfairly punish individuals and organizations, without giving them a chance to defend themselves.

Cancel culture is a complex phenomenon that has both its supporters and detractors. While it can be an effective way to hold individuals and organizations accountable for their actions, it can also be taken too far and can lead to a culture of fear and self-censorship. It is important to strike a balance between holding people accountable and protecting free speech, and to ensure that cancel culture is used in a fair and just manner.

Cancel culture is a phenomenon that is not unique to any one country or culture. It has been observed in various parts of the world, including in the Philippines. However, the extent to which it is prevalent in the Philippines is difficult to determine, as it can manifest in different ways and to varying degrees.

In recent years, there have been several instances in the Philippines where individuals or organizations have faced backlash and calls for boycott or cancellation due to perceived offensive or inappropriate behavior. For example, in 2020, Filipino vlogger Lloyd Cadena faced criticism and calls for boycott after he was accused of making derogatory remarks about transgender individuals in one of his videos. Cadena later apologized for his comments.

Another example is that of fashion brand Bench, which faced backlash and calls for boycott in 2019 after releasing a controversial ad campaign featuring a gay couple. The campaign was criticized by some as being inappropriate and offensive.

While these are just a few examples, it is worth noting that cancel culture in the Philippines may not be as widespread as it is in some other countries, due to factors such as cultural norms and the influence of traditional media. However, with the increasing use of social media and the growing awareness of social justice issues, it is possible that cancel culture could become more prevalent in the Philippines in the future.

It is important to note that while cancel culture can be a tool for holding people accountable for their actions, it is important to ensure that it is used in a fair and just manner, and that due process is followed. It is also important to recognize the role that free speech plays in a democratic society, and to ensure that individuals are able to express their opinions without fear of being canceled.

PHLPost marks 2023 National Heritage Month with historic postage stamps

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

To mark the celebration of 2023 National Heritage Month (NHM), the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has unveiled a new set of commemorative stamps featuring eight (8) different heritage structures and historic sites associated with the birth of the Filipino nation, the first democracy and constitutional republic in the whole of Asia.

These historic structures are Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite; Sideco House, San Isidro Nueva Ecija; Cabanatuan Cathedral Convent, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija; Pamintuan Mansion, Angeles City; Tarlac Cathedral, Tarlac City, Tarlac; Cuenca House, Bacoor, Cavite; Malolos Cathedral Convent, Malolos City, Bulacan and Barasoain Church, Malolos City, Bulacan.

Entitled “Kalayaan ay Pamana”, PHLPost has partnered with the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc. (FHFI), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and FUNtastic Philippines Inc, a group of amateur and professional photographers in commemorating the National Heritage Month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 439, declaring the month of May of every year as National Heritage Month o Buwan ng Pambansang Pamana.

The celebration aims to create among the Filipino people an enhanced consciousness, respect, and love for the legacies of the nation’s cultural history.

“Mula sa mga makulay na kasaysayan at tanyag na lugar sa bansa, na tampok sa mumunting piraso ng sining na kung tawagin ay “Stamp o Selyo”, ang PHLPost ay patuloy na nagmumulat ng kaalaman, respeto at pagbibigay halaga sa pagiging Filipino.”, Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos said.

He added, “Keeping our heritage buildings intact amid the new development and progress would provide us and the next generations a sense of continuity in these times of uncertainty and change”.

The postage stamps also reflect the country’s long-standing traditions, cultural values, or political systems that endure despite changes that may occur in other areas. Its continuity provides a sense of stability and a connection to the past and helps to shape the development of societies and cultures for generations to come.

PHLPost has printed 80,000 copies of the Stamps in eight (8) different designs with a 16-peso denomination, and souvenir sheets with a 55-peso denomination. PHLPost in-house graphic designer Ryman Dominic Albuladora did the layout of the stamps with photos credited to Rolino Bucao, Jr., Rosemarie de Guzman, Godwin Hernaez, Bobby Taron, and Ruwen Verdaguer of FUNtastic Philippines, Inc.

DepEd execs present major priority interventions to partners ahead of Partners’ Forum

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Department of Education (DepEd) presented on Thursday the priority interventions to the Official Development Assistance (ODA) and local partners in a convergence meeting at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Headquarters.

“The Department of Education gives a special place to our partners. We have to realize that the DepEd's goal to provide quality and accessible basic education to all Filipino learners requires collaboration and a helping hand from organizations and stakeholders like you,” Undersecretary for Finance Annalyn Sevilla said.

The Finance strand, led by Usec. Sevilla presented its key reform objectives that focus on several programs geared towards the digitalization of finance processes. The strand also aims to prioritize scholarships including capacity building on loan management, and financial literacy programs for DepEd personnel.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Administration Kristian Ablan discussed possible collaborations with partners on DepEd initiatives in digitization of forms, enhancement of existing systems, and assistance for its parametric and indemnity insurance for public schools.

As one of the main pillars in the MATATAG Agenda, the Curriculum and Teaching (CT) strand led by Undersecretary Gina Gonong focused its priority interventions on strengthening of its literacy and numeracy programs, review of the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), digitizing of national assessments, strengthening of inclusive education program, and inclusive teaching approaches, among others.

Undersecretary for Human Resource and Organizational Development (HROD) Gloria Jumamil-Mercado presented the development of quality assurance effectiveness, upscaling of the National Educators' Academy of the Philippines and knowledge sharing from the partners in their expertise as their priority programs for interventions.

Assistant Secretary for Operations Dexter Galban, on the other hand, presented the mobile medical and dental clinics project of the strand as a program consideration for the partners. Additionally, he also presented the school-based feeding program, learner rights and protection mechanisms, mental health program, learner and youth program development, and the farm-to-table nutrition project of DepEd as the main programs of the Agency promoting learner welfare, as stated in the MATATAG Agenda.

The School Infrastructure and Facilities strand, led by Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III, requests assistance from the partners in addressing classroom shortages through construction or rehabilitation, building disaster-resilient schools, retrofitting of classrooms, and electrification programs. Further, he also shared with the partners that more than a million of learners are still conducting classes under a makeshift/temporary classrooms or some are under the trees.

Assistant Secretary Omar Alexander Romero also discussed the plans of the Procurement strand to improve procurement processes of the Department through continuing capacity building and digitalization.

This convergence meeting wrapped up the preliminary activities of DepEd for the Partners’ Forum on May 25. The first meeting held in Baguio City involved DepEd Central Office and Regional Officers for the development of the menu of interventions.

Team Patakam vloggers are only creating exaggerated and overhyped content

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Should we create vlogs to contradict what these jokers called Team Patakam are doing?

Team Patakam nagbahagi daw ng mga tips kung paano maging viral ang mga videos lalo na sa mga gusto pa lang pumasok sa mundo ng vlogging.

Just reposting a comment;

"Kapag sila ang nag review ay "Ang sarap!"....pero kapag ikaw na ang kumain sasabihin mo ay "Sana sa iba na lang ako kumain"

Overhyped and exaggerated lang ang peg. Kaya mawawalan ng tiwala ang mga tao sa mga vloggers ay dahil sa mga kagaya ng mga Team Patakam"

Huwag gayahin ang mga ito. Maraming food vloggers na hindi sinasabi ang totoo. Yung totoo lang sana ang ikukuwento please.

They just follow trends, but rarely set the trends.

Ang Team Patakam ay binubuo nina: Manuel Olazo, Naomi Peña, Ran Mamangun, Laine Bernardo, at Jayzar Recinto.

Though taste varies per person, what may taste good for some may not be the same for others .. may mga food vloggers kasi that don't really tell the truth...masyadong exag o hyped para lang mapansin ang kanilang vlog.

Also, the media who published these features are forgetting to mention factors such as hygiene, cleanliness, ambiance and other considerations, especially if the sellers are street foods or karinderia setup. But are they good for us healthwise? Again, these media are just also after the views. Papansin din. Wala sigurong mas worthy and significant stories out there. Nakiki sakay rin sa trending o viral?

We need to inform our viewers about these facts. Not give them more disinformation or fake facts. We are only twisting the narratives in our favor but harming our fellowmen in the process.

Remember that we usually get what we paid for, so there's a reason for everything. Every smart businessman knows that we need to account for the costs of providing the better location, ambiance, ingredients, service, marketing, etc.

So asks the right questions like why are softdrinks cheaper than real fruit juices? Should we settle for less but eventually harm ourselves? Should we prefer quality instead of quantity?

It doesn't always mean that a lomihan that serves with umaapaw na sahog o toppings are better. Let us reflect on that.

Turuan natin ng better way to do food reviews itong mga pabibo vloggers. They do know how to entertain but fail in informing us about the facts that really matter.

Most content creators, specifically those who feature food and restaurants, do not have the expertise to properly review. They do not have the knowledge, training and exposure similar to how chefs and other culinary experts are groomed through years of training, study or actual practice.

Content Creators of whatever platform are more like entertainers whose objective is to attract attention towards the brands or products they are featuring.

Effective ka kung nakuha mo attention ng viewers but it doesn't automatically mean that what you stated is entirely true and factual.

Yun lang naman ang primary goal natin but let us not forget that we should also have the responsibility to let people know that.

May form of "disclaimer" dapat palagi tayo on our content.

Similar to advertisements, people should not instantly believe what Content Creators claim.

PNP, SSS to pursue social security coverage of former rebels through contribution subsidy arrangement

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Social Security System (SSS) held a dialogue with the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) here last April 12 to discuss plans to facilitate social security coverage of former rebels through contribution subsidy arrangements.

The SSS is discussing details with the PNP as to the number of former rebels, their current livelihood, and their typical monthly income to determine the cost of providing full social security contributions to them for a period of six (6) months. SSS is keen on participating as a subsidy provider under its Contribution Subsidy Provider Program (CSPP).

Eventually, it is hoped that government, non-government entities, and individuals can also participate in the CSPP as subsidy providers to sustain social security coverage of the former rebels well beyond six (6) months.

“SSS learned that these former armed groups are now enrolled in various livelihood trainings offered by the government as part of their reintegration process. We, at SSS, would like to be part of this government endeavor by providing them social protection as they rebuild their lives in the community,” SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Rolando Ledesma Macasaet said.

As SSS active members, CSPP beneficiaries will be qualified to different SSS benefits like sickness, maternity, disability, retirement, death and funeral and be eligible to loan privileges such as the Salary Loan Program. They are also entitled to Employee’s Compensation (EC) benefits for work-related contingencies.

“As soon as the details and guidelines are finalized, we will meet prospective contribution subsidy providers and their beneficiaries to orient them on the value of SSS membership as well as their responsibilities under this program,” Macasaet said.

Provincial Director PCOL Marlo Aquino Castillo as represented by Deputy Provincial Director for Administration PLTCOL Louise Benjie Pintor Tremor, expressed his support in the project and promised to assist SSS in any way possible.

Photo shows SSS Senior Vice President for Luzon Operations Group Atty. Antonio Argabioso discussing the value of SSS membership in front of the officers of ISPPO at Camp Elpidio R. Quirino, Bulag Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Also in the dialogue were SSS Senior Vice President Mario Sibucao of the Office of the Executive Vice President for Branch Operations, SSS Vice President for Luzon North 1 Division Ceasar Saludo, SSS Public Affairs and Special Events Division Concurrent Acting Head Carlo Villacorta, Account Management Group Concurrent Acting Head Atty. Neil Hernaez and SSS Candon Acting Branch Head Arvi Resultay.

5 Reasons Tactical Subscription Boxes Make A Good Investment

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Learning how to thrive in the great outdoors isn’t just a hobby; it’s a matter of necessity. In the wild, you gain skills and experiences that so many could only dream of. It can be life-changing, as you’ll turn from a novice into a strong, powerful, expert forester. So, how do new hunters and survivalists get started?

A tactical subscription box contains all the essentials for adventure, disaster, and everything. To keep you well stocked with only the best gear, there is a tactical subscription box for every level of experience and whatever situation you are in.

The most experienced hunters and survivalists know it best: prior preparation and good, reliable gear could be a matter of life or death in the wild. However, knowing where to start in this all-important preparation can be difficult. With that in mind, here are the five best reasons that a tactical subscription box makes an unmissable, winning investment:

1. A tactical subscription box is tailor-made for whatever you may need.

Searching individual websites for every piece of kit you need is, simply put, a waste of time. When dealing with emergencies in the wild, you know how to prioritize your time; don't drop those skills for the rest of your life.

With a tactical subscription box, you can let the experts do the mundane task of assembling your tools so that you can focus on using them just right.Wazzup Pilipinas!?

If you subscribe to tactical monthly subscription boxes, you can save long hours searching for each piece of equipment. Let's face it; your time is money. Spend it right.

2. They are amazing value for money.

Subscription boxes are often explicitly curated to your interests, needs, and environment. So, ordering a tailor-made box will only provide you with what you need.

How often have you looked through your tools and realized the most expensive tool is the one you use the least? We know what's happened to us. You don't want to carry around a heavy monument to waste money.

You want to have just what is needed, and that's where a box like The Nomadik comes into play: The Nomadik has boxes with specific themes for your specific adventure needs; your box is purpose-designed, so nothing will go unused.

When picking what you need, the minds behind curating a tactical subscription box will think like your accountant: your savings are their aim, and your safety is their biggest priority. All good investors know a deal when they see it, and you're eyeballing one right now.

3. Exclusivity

In a tactical subscription box, you’ll likely get items you can't get anywhere else.

This exclusive access to premium, military-class equipment isn't just a fashion statement.

As survivalists know, something as small as a technical edge can be the difference between success and failure in the wild. The differences may be small at the level you operate at, yet, having tools your rivals haven't got can turn your next hunt into an unbelievable victory compared to those in your group.

Regarding safety, you want to be at the forefront of innovation; with these exclusive pieces of gear, your buddies out there will think you're a hunter from the future.

4. Great quality items.

When experts choose the items, they only pick items they would use themselves.

Boxes don't have a single filler item in them. It's not a crime to be unable to pick out the minor differences between elite pieces of equipment, but if it were, the experts wouldn't commit it if it were.

When they pick your box, they think through scenarios that most couldn't imagine. They put as much care into your box as they would into their own, and when they send it to you, they know there's enough in there to keep them safe, and it's no different for you.

All good survivalists know how and when to delegate, and this is one of those times. We just pick the tools; you utilize them.

5. Preparation.

You can't know when you will need a box, truthfully, nor do we. We just know that you will. Disaster can strike any moment; when it does, we know that a man like you will want to be ready.

So, with a subscription box from one of the services mentioned throughout this article, that's precisely what you will be. Prior preparation prevents poor performance -- and as an expert, we know performance matters to you. Our job is to get you in the best possible position to excel.

In Conclusion

Tactical subscription boxes are a must-have for those must-do moments. They're an excellent investment, financially and in your safety; what could be more important than that? You spent a lot of time and effort getting yourself into the best shape possible; let us take care of getting your equipment into shape; once we have done that, nothing will be able to stop you. So, are you in?

Thanks to vaccines, these diseases are now a thing of the past

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

No Filipino child should suffer or perish from preventable diseases when vaccines can safeguard their health.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), a child who has received all recommended vaccinations is more likely to grow up healthy. Since their immune systems are still developing, young children and infants are especially vulnerable to several infections that can result in significant harm or death.

Here are some diseases, that for a time, became a distant memory because of the effectiveness of vaccines:

1. Measles
Did you know that before the measles vaccine was developed in 1963 and was widely used, significant outbreaks occurred every 2-3 years, and measles is thought to cause 2.6 million yearly deaths? Measles can be dangerous and very contagious, especially in young children.

2. Mumps
Before the development of vaccines, Mumps might lead to complications such as irreversible childhood deafness and, sometimes, encephalitis, which could, in extreme circumstances, be fatal. A person who has received the vaccine will experience the mumps less severely than someone who has not.

3. Rubella
Known as "German measles," Rubella is contagious. The virus can cause severe congenital disabilities if a pregnant woman contracts it, though the infection is often mild with a fever and rash. Before the start of the rubella immunization program in 1969, there were an estimated 12.5 million rubella cases in the United States (US) between 1964 and 1965, 11,000 pregnancies ended in stillbirth, 2,100 infants died, and 20,000 infants were born with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) before.

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine

The Department of Health (DOH) urges individuals to receive the MMR vaccine for protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. Two doses of the MMR vaccination should be given to children at 9 months and 1 year old.

4. Polio
The most feared illness globally throughout the late 19th and early 20th century was polio due to frequent outbreaks. Over 2000 people died in a significant epidemic in New York City in 1916, and over 3000 killed in the biggest outbreak in the US in 1952. The oral polio vaccination offers protection against the poliovirus, which can cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles and, in extreme cases, irreversible paralysis of the limbs.

One dose each should be given at the following ages: 2 months old, 4 months old, 6 to 8 months old, and 4 to 6 years old.

5. Chickenpox
Before the development of the vaccine, the United States had a yearly rise of over 4 million cases of chickenpox, over 10,000 hospitalizations, and up to 150 fatalities. A fever and itchy, blistered skin rash are symptoms of chickenpox. There might be as many as 500 blisters on the body of a person with chickenpox. Particularly in infants, adults, and those with compromised immune systems, chickenpox can be dangerous and even fatal.

Chickenpox vaccine should be given at 12 to 15 months and 4 to 6 years old.

Every last week of April, people worldwide observe World Immunization Week. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of vaccinations and encourage their use to protect individuals of all ages from diseases.

The event also aims to drumup that vaccines are a crucial tool in protecting our little ones from serious illnesses and even death.

By getting inoculated, we can help ensure that our children grow up healthy and strong. So let's do our part to keep our kids safe and get them vaccinated.

Health centers in the Philippines offer these vaccinations FREE of charge. For details on immunization schedules, vaccination certificates, and other nutrition and growth monitoring services, stop by the health center that is most convenient for you. (PIA-NCR)
