Orpheus and Eurydice: Love Story Between a Demigod and a Wood Nymph

Wazzup Pilipinas!

As per Wikipedia, a myth is a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. According to the internet, greek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. One example of greek mythology, is the story of “Orpheus and Eurydice”

Orpheus and Eurydice” is a story of a demigod who is best known as the greatest musician who fell in love with a wood nymph named Eurydice. But there is man named Aristeus who became a trouble to the major characters. Eurydice was bitten by a serpent. The poison of the sting killed her and she descended to Hades immediately.

Orpheus was so sad about the loss of his love that he composed music to express the terrible emptiness which pervaded his every breath and movement. He was so desperate and found so little else meaningful, that he decided to address Hades.

As the overseer of the underworld, Hades heart had to be hard as steel, and so it was. Many approached Hades to beg for loved ones back and as many times were refused. But Orpheus' music was so sweet and so moving that it softened the steel hearted heart of Hades himself. Hades gave permission to Orpheus to bring Eurydice back to the surface of the earth to enjoy the light of day.

There was only one condition--Orpheus was not to look back as he ascended. He was to trust that Eurydice was immediately behind him. It was a long way and just as Orpheus had almost finished that last part of the trek, he looked behind him to make sure Eurydice was still with him. At that very moment, she was snatched back because he did not trust that she was there. When you hear music which mourns lost love, it is Orpheus' spirit who guides the hand of the musicians who play it.

Two weeks before the play, our group planned our play to be musical because our story is about the love of Orpheus who is the greatest musician next to his father, Apollo. So what we did was to incorporate songs that fit to the story. But before we came up to that style, we already have the script so it was easy to put the songs on it. On the songs we used, we also replaced some words on it to put the thoughts from the story. For the props and costumes, we only searched them on the internet, and then we tried to copy it. The backdrops were all drawn by one of our members. The costumes are just cloths from the cabinet because the teacher doesn’t want us to spend much money anymore. On our practices, we always repeat to the scenes that we know we are lacking in mastery and also to our favorite scenes.

On the day of the play, we felt so nervous. It’s because we felt that we are not yet ready. But thanks to God we made through it. During our performance, I know that we did our best evens some of us forgot our lines. It was amazing because even some of us forgot our lines, we made it and the flow of the story was not broken up.

After the play, we felt relieved and relaxed because it was over. We finished the play well. We are thankful because we received a good grade and all our efforts are paid.
