Toxic Beauty: The Hidden Danger Lurking in Thailand-Made Facial Creams

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a shocking revelation that underscores the ongoing fight against toxic beauty products, the toxics watchdog group EcoWaste Coalition has uncovered yet another skincare product laced with hazardous mercury. This latest discovery reaffirms the urgent need for stricter enforcement of cosmetics regulations to protect consumers from unseen dangers.

A Silent Poison in a Beauty Jar

EcoWaste Coalition, in its relentless advocacy for public health and environmental safety, recently purchased a red Dr. Wuttisak skincare set from an online seller for a mere P120. But what seemed like an innocent beauty purchase turned out to be a potential health hazard. Upon screening the five-piece skincare set with an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) device, the results were alarming: while the soap, toner, and two of the three cream jars tested negative, the third jar contained an astonishing 10,610 parts per million (ppm) of mercury.

To put this into perspective, mercury is not a permitted ingredient in cosmetics under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive. The presence of such a high concentration in a facial cream is not only illegal but also poses severe health risks to unsuspecting consumers.

A Recurring Threat

This is not the first time Dr. Wuttisak products have come under scrutiny. Previous tests on the blue and green variants of this Thai skincare brand also revealed mercury contamination, raising red flags about the widespread availability of these toxic products in the market. Despite international regulations such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury—which set a global phase-out deadline for mercury-added cosmetics—these hazardous products continue to slip through regulatory cracks, jeopardizing public safety.

The Deadly Effects of Mercury

Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal with no known safe level of exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that inorganic mercury found in skin-lightening products can cause devastating health effects, including:

Kidney damage

Skin rashes, discoloration, and scarring

Weakened skin resistance to bacterial and fungal infections

Anxiety, depression, and psychosis

Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage)

For pregnant women, the risks are even more dire. Mercury can accumulate in the body and be transferred to developing fetuses, leading to irreversible neurodevelopmental issues in children.

Mercury’s Reach Beyond the Skin

The toxic effects of mercury are not confined to the users alone. The WHO emphasizes that mercury from creams and soaps washes into wastewater systems, contaminating rivers and oceans. Once in the environment, it transforms into methylmercury—a highly toxic form that accumulates in fish and seafood, ultimately making its way into the human food chain.

Furthermore, non-users, including babies and family members, are at risk of exposure. Mercury vapors from tainted cosmetics can be inhaled, absorbed through skin contact, or transferred via contaminated bedding and clothing. In essence, using mercury-laden skin-lightening products doesn’t just endanger the user—it endangers entire households and ecosystems.

A Call for Action: Embrace Natural Beauty

In light of these alarming findings, EcoWaste Coalition has once again issued a stern warning against the use of mercury-laden beauty products. The group calls on Filipinos to reject dangerous chemical whiteners and embrace their natural skin tone, advocating the message: “Beauty has no skin tone. All colors are beautiful.”

Consumers must exercise vigilance when purchasing skincare products, especially those marketed for skin whitening. If a product lacks proper labeling, boasts instant whitening effects, or is suspiciously cheap, it may contain toxic ingredients. Regulatory agencies must intensify their monitoring efforts, while online marketplaces must implement stricter policies to prevent the sale of hazardous cosmetics.

Final Thought: Beauty at What Cost?

The pursuit of fair skin should never come at the expense of health and safety. Let this serve as a wake-up call to consumers, regulators, and the beauty industry alike: toxic beauty has no place in our society. The real glow comes from confidence, self-acceptance, and making informed choices that prioritize well-being over fleeting aesthetic trends.

Bouncing Back: How to Clear and Restore Your Garden After a Storm

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

There’s nothing quite like the heartbreak of stepping into your garden after a harsh storm. One day, it’s a space of calm, green beauty—your sanctuary—and the next, it’s strewn with broken branches, debris, and damage you weren’t expecting. For anyone who finds meaning in gardening, that kind of sight can feel deeply personal.

But the good news? Gardens are resilient. And with a bit of clean-up, repair, and planning, yours can bounce back stronger and even more beautiful. Here’s a step-by-step guide to clearing out your garden after a storm and setting it up for a fresh start.

Assess the Damage Before You Dig In

First things first—make sure it’s safe. Look out for fallen power lines, unstable trees, or damaged structures that might pose a risk. Once you’ve cleared that, take a slow walk around your garden.

You’ll want to check for common types of storm damage:

● Broken or bent branches

● Uprooted plants or trees

● Displaced pots, planters, or garden furniture

● Cracked trellises, fences, or greenhouses

Snap a few photos of major damage—especially if your area qualifies for any local assistance or if you’ve got insurance coverage for garden structures or landscaping. This initial assessment helps you prioritize what needs immediate attention and what can wait until later.

Remove Debris with the Right Tools

After a storm, your garden is likely littered with debris—some small, some large. Start with the bigger pieces like fallen limbs, broken planters, and shifted furniture. Then move to the smaller stuff like twigs, leaves, and scattered mulch or bark.

This is where having the right tools can make all the difference. A Worx leaf blower is ideal for quickly and efficiently clearing out smaller debris without disturbing the plants that survived. It saves time and energy, letting you focus on the bigger task of rebuilding.

Be sure to separate organic waste for composting, if possible. If you're dealing with a lot of debris, check with your local barangay for proper disposal rules and whether there’s a scheduled clean-up service post-storm.

Repair What Matters Most

Once the space is clear, you’ll start to see what really needs fixing. Begin with the essentials—anything that affects daily use or the health of your plants. If your greenhouse panels are cracked or if irrigation lines have snapped, fix those first.

Check trellises, raised beds, and vertical planters for cracks or instability. Some damage will be simple enough to patch or tie together temporarily, but don’t hesitate to replace items that are too far gone. It’s not just about appearance—it’s about creating a safe and functional space moving forward.

Don’t forget the small details: reposition garden lights, refill empty soil in pots, and give all your tools a quick check in case anything got waterlogged or damaged during the storm.

Restore What You Can, Replace What You Must

A damaged plant doesn’t always mean a dead plant. Many species can recover from being knocked over or partially broken. Prune any damaged limbs or leaves carefully, and re-stake tall plants to help them stand up again.

If something is truly beyond saving, try to replant with native or fast-growing varieties to recover the space quickly. While the loss may sting, it’s also a chance to experiment with something new in the same spot.

Take a few days to monitor the area before adding anything fresh—sometimes a plant looks worse than it is, and you might be surprised what bounces back after a few days of sunshine.

Protect Your Garden from the Next Storm

Now that the mess is cleared, think about how to prepare better for the next big weather event.

Start with support: bamboo sticks or planting posts can keep taller plants upright in strong winds. For younger plants or climbers, garden ties offer gentle stability.

Secure or store outdoor furniture and ornaments that could become projectiles during strong winds. Adding windbreaks like hedges or low fencing can also help reduce the full force of a storm.

Mulching around plant bases helps reduce erosion and maintains moisture when rain becomes inconsistent. For smaller gardens, consider raised beds—they drain better and reduce the risk of plants sitting in standing water for too long.

Even little changes, like keeping gutters clear and trimming nearby trees, can prevent bigger problems. Protecting your garden isn’t just about the plants—it’s about keeping the whole environment more storm-resistant.

Storms may shake things up, but they don’t get the final word. Your garden is more than just greenery—it’s a living, growing extension of your home and spirit. With thoughtful clean-up and care, you can help it recover and even thrive.

Take it one step at a time. Before long, your garden will be blooming again—maybe even better than before
