Wazzup Pilipinas!?
Beyond the bustling corridors of commerce and the bright lights of the city, a quiet but fierce battle is being fought on the Philippines' shorelines. In a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm SM Cares, recently mobilized a massive nationwide effort to protect our most precious resource. This wasn't just a cleanup; it was a rallying cry for a Waste-Free Future.
A Nationwide Movement for World Water Day
In celebration of World Water Day, the spirit of bayanihan—community unity—was on full display. Seven participating malls across six strategic locations became the frontlines for this environmental intervention:
SM City La Union
SM City Urdaneta Central
SM City Tanza
SM City Daet
SM City Consolacion
SM Seaside City Cebu
SM J Mall
From the northern coast of La Union to the heart of Cebu, volunteers and local stakeholders united with a singular, high-stakes goal: to divert waste away from the oceans and restore the health of local marine ecosystems.
More Than Trash: The Power of Education
While the physical removal of debris is vital, SM Cares is looking toward a permanent solution. This year’s initiative prioritized enhanced waste segregation education. It isn't enough to simply pick up plastic; the community must understand the why and the how of proper sorting and recycling.
"Protecting our coastal and marine environments requires a more proactive, end-to-end approach with the cleanups starting with education, deepening awareness, and sustaining collective action," says Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for Environment and Sustainability of SM Supermalls.
During the event, participants didn't just bag trash—they analyzed it. By sorting materials like plastic packaging and beverage containers, volunteers witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that improperly managed daily waste has on marine life.
A Year-Round Commitment to the Planet
The coastal cleanups are a cornerstone of the broader SM Green Movement. This isn't a one-day event, but a sustained mission to inspire long-term behavioral change among Filipinos. To keep the momentum alive, SM Cares has already set its sights on the next horizons:
June: World Oceans Day Cleanup Drives
September: International Coastal Cleanup activities
November: National Environmental Awareness Month initiatives
By turning community action into a hands-on lesson, SM Supermalls is proving that the path to a cleaner world starts at our own feet. It is a journey from awareness to action, all for the benefit of the people and the planet.
