Wazzup Pilipinas!?
When the world stopped in 2020, the silence on the streets was deafening. For millions of Filipinos, the sudden evaporation of public transport wasn't just an inconvenience—it was a severance of their lifelines. In that moment of isolation, a humble hero emerged: the bicycle. Recognizing this desperate shift, SM Supermalls didn’t just open its doors; it rebuilt its world to protect the people who pedal.
What began as a localized effort to help essential workers get to their jobs has exploded into a nationwide phenomenon, culminating in a historic, record-breaking 36-win streak from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the 2025 Mobility Awards.
From Survival to Sustainability
"What began as a heartfelt initiative to support bikers during COVID has now become an integrated bike program spanning every single SM mall in the country," says Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing.
The transition was rapid and radical. It started with simple, exclusive parking spots to ensure cyclists could grab essentials safely. But as the lockdowns eased and the volume of riders grew, SM realized that biking wasn't a temporary fix—it was the future of Filipino mobility.
A Sanctuary for Cyclists
To turn a mall into a "home" for bikers, SM went beyond basic racks. They engineered a comprehensive ecosystem designed for the human behind the handlebars:
Intuitive Safety: Modern, clear cycling lanes were carved out to separate bikes from heavy traffic.
The "Padded" Touch: In a brilliant display of sustainability, bike racks were cushioned with upcycled rubber tire casings to protect frames from scratches.
Pit-Stop Amenities: Dedicated spaces were equipped with repair tools, specialized bike maps, and even lounge and shower areas for those commuting long distances.
Active Hub Integration: Digital experiences through QR codes and the "Active Hub" now enhance the journey for every rider.
Winning the Gold (and Silver, and Bronze)
The impact of this "Pedal Power" movement has sent shockwaves through the industry. At the recent 2025 Mobility Awards, SM Supermalls achieved a feat never before seen: 34 separate accolades.
1 Gold Citation: Awarded to SM Marikina for being a premier Bicycle-Friendly Large Establishment.
11 Silver & 22 Bronze Awards: Recognizing the relentless efforts of malls across the entire archipelago.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) further cemented SM's legacy, citing their "Pedal Power 2025" as a Notable Advocacy Program and the overarching bike-friendly initiative as a Notable Development by the Private Sector.
More Than a Mall: A Lifestyle Evolution
Today, SM properties have become the beating heart of the cycling community. Surrounding tenants have even adjusted their operating hours to welcome early-bird cycling groups, transforming biking from a mere mode of transport into a celebrated sport and lifestyle.
As SM Supermalls celebrates 40 years, it is no longer just a developer of retail spaces; it is a developer of urban life. Through the coaction of SM Cares and local communities, they are proving that the path to a greener, more inclusive Philippines is best traveled on two wheels.
