KAMANDAG 9 Unleashed: Multinational Forces Converge in the Philippines for the Ultimate Test of Unity, Strength, and Resolve

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

A storm of unity roared across the seas as flags from five nations flew high above Marine Barracks Rudiardo Brown, marking the official launch of KAMANDAG 9, a multinational military exercise whose name—Kaagapay ng mga Mandirigma ng Dagat or “Cooperation of Warriors of the Sea”—has become a battle cry for regional solidarity and strength.

From May 26 to June 6, 2025, warriors from the Philippines, United States, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom unite in a symphony of military precision, amphibious warfare readiness, and humanitarian operations—proving that peace is best safeguarded when nations stand shoulder to shoulder.

“This isn’t just another exercise. It’s a declaration,” emphasized Brig. Gen. Vicente Blanco, Deputy Commandant of the Philippine Marine Corps and the exercise’s director. “The presence of our partners from Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom sends a powerful message to the world: We are stronger together.”

Beyond Borders, Beyond Protocols

Led by the Philippine Marine Corps, the U.S. Marine Rotational Force – Darwin (MRF-D) 25.3 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, and the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, KAMANDAG 9 is no ordinary drill. It’s a crucible where coordination, resilience, and trust are forged across jungles, shorelines, and open seas of the archipelago.

This year's iteration is especially historic—marking the first time the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) is participating as a fully integrated amphibious partner. No longer limited to bilateral interactions, Japan now joins as an equal in multilateral operations, expanding the regional network of cooperation and strength.

“This is more than training,” said Maj. Gen. Toshikatsu Musha of the Japanese Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade (ARDB). “It is a testament to our readiness to respond together. The ARDB will conduct beach landings and medical operations, hand-in-hand with the U.S. Marine Corps.”

Training for Peace, Preparing for Crisis

With its sweeping scope, KAMANDAG 9 serves dual purposes: deterrence and disaster response.

On June 2, a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission near Quezon, Palawan will demonstrate the multinational force’s ability to rapidly respond to calamities—showcasing the heart behind the hardware. Meanwhile, the Counter-Landing Live-Fire Exercise on June 4 offers a dramatic display of tactical excellence and collective force, as amphibious units simulate defense against hostile incursions.

“These next few days will push us all,” stated Col. Jason C. Armas, commanding officer of MRF-D 25.3. “We will train in the dense jungles, the unforgiving coasts, and the dynamic maritime zones of the Philippines. Our Marines and Sailors will be tested in ways that reflect real-world conditions—preparing us for any threat, anywhere.”

A Message Echoing Across the Indo-Pacific

As the geopolitical tides of the Indo-Pacific shift, exercises like KAMANDAG 9 resonate with significance. They signal a unified stand for sovereignty, stability, and security in one of the world’s most vital and contested regions.

What began as a bilateral endeavor has now evolved into a multinational alliance—a living example of how shared values and mutual respect can transcend borders.

“KAMANDAG is not just an exercise. It is a symbol,” said a defense observer from one of the participating nations. “A symbol that despite differences in language, origin, and command, warriors of the sea can rise as one.”

As thunder rolls across the skies of Palawan and the horizon brims with the presence of international vessels, one thing is clear: KAMANDAG 9 is more than training—it’s a declaration of unity, an embodiment of collective strength, and a promise to protect the peace of the Indo-Pacific.

And for the watching world, the message is crystal clear: When warriors of the sea stand together, no wave is too strong, no threat insurmountable.
