League of Corporate Foundations Hold CSR Expo 2016 Media Forum

Now on its 20th year, the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF) continues to promote and enhance Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice among its members and the larger business community. 

It recently organized a media forum at the Discovery Primea in Makati city on June 15, 2016 to formally announce their 15th LCF CSR Expo and Conference event to be held soon on July 14-15, 2016 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. In celebration of its two-decade milestone, LCF themed this year’s CSR Expo and Conference, “Co-creating the future through CSR.” 

Edric Calma, Director of Transmedia Division of teh Knowledge Channel Foundation, hosted the press conference with a panel consisting of Lydia Sarmiento-Enrile, Trustee of Vivant Foundation and member of the LCF Advisory Council; Ma. Aurora Tolentino, Trustee of the Aboitiz Foundation and also a member of the LCF Advisory Council, USec. Mario Deriquito from External Partnerships and Linkages of the Department of Education; Susan Afan, Managing Director of ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation; Marilou Erni, Executive Director of Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation; and Roderick Castro, Vice Chairperson of LCF BOT, and Chair of CSR Expo 2016, LCF and Executive Director of TeaM Energy Foundation.

The media forum introduced the attendees to how the LCF was formed via the stories of Lydia Sarmiento-Enrile, who was said to be the most senior among the attendees and would be very reliable in sharing the history and milestones of the organization.  Marilou Erni shared how LCF CSR Expo originated and discussed its objectives, rationale and importance, while Roderick De Castro discussed the theme, program and activities to expect on the expo and conference. Ma. Aurora Tolentino retold the evolution of the CSR programs in the Philippines and how it impacted the country towards nation-building and sustainable development. USec Mario Deriquito discussed LCF's contribution to business and society and how it engages various sectors in establishing long-term goals to adress development challenges and issues. Susan Afan informed us of how celebrities and influencers could be tapped in helping raise awareness by leveraging on their numerous followers who think of them as their role models.



Aside from discussing sustainable CSR efforts for long-term inclusive growth, the forum looks back on the formative years of LCF that served as springboard towards strategic partnerships for CSR.

“In its 20th anniversary, LCF’s network of over 80 corporate foundations and corporations will reinforce their commitment to develop CSR through collaborative efforts and use this as platform towards sustaining national development,” said Natalie Christine V. Jorge, Chairperson of LCF and Executive Director of Bato-Balani Foundation, Inc, in a media forum.

LCF was formed in 1991 by a handful of corporate foundations engaged in social development in the Philippines, with the common goal to help Filipino communities in need. In 1996, LCF was officially registered with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), paving the way to the rapid increase of its member corporate foundations and business organizations.

Lydia Sarmiento, Trustee at the Vivant Foundation, Inc and member of the LCF Advisory Council, further elaborated on how LCF has led business sectors’ expand interest in CSR, corporate governance, social innovation and commitment to nation-building.

“The League serves as its members’ arena for exchanging ideas, best practices, experience, and technology as well as other concerns relevant to its goals,” she said. “The business sector has a large part to play as change-makers. A collective plan of action and streamlined goals effectively create economic and societal value over time.”

LCF is organized into committees, representing the major areas of social development that the entire membership is involved in. These divisions include Arts and Culture, Education, Enterprise Development, Environment, and Health.

Meanwhile, Ma. Aurora Tolentino, Trustee at the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., examined the evolution of CSR in the Philippines and how LCF helped cement sustained programs and efforts towards addressing social challenges through the years. “The League has formed its values, though its members pursue different programs and priorities distinct to their mandate. CSR was proactively integrated into the core business operations of companies, and LCF also accepted corporations that are interested in improving their CSR practice.”

As such, the League’s network was strengthened as more strategic partnerships were shaped with the aim to address sustainable development goals. Mario Deriquito, Undersecretary for External Partnerships and Linkages of the Department of Education, tackled how the League delivers sustainable contributions to business and society through collaboration.

Not only the business sectors, various influencers like celebrity philanthropists have also been encouraged to take up advocacies for social development, and have now actually become role models for CSR. Susan Afan, Managing Director of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc., shared how celebrity philanthropists and influencers have been effectively raising awareness and support for various social causes.

The partnerships, streamlined action plan, sustained efforts and expansion of influence will all be recapped and assessed during the annual LCF CSR Expo and Conference whose theme changes according to the relevant CSR issues and challenges of the time.

The LCF CSR Expo and Conference was first celebrated in 2001, with LCF having been designated as the overall coordinating body to oversee the activities of the National CSR Week—held every first week of July following a Presidential Proclamation issued the same year.

“The CSR Expo and Conference will once again bring the business community and other sectors together to discuss the latest trends, models and practices in CSR, and promote a common framework to support a sustainable national development,” explained Roderick De Castro, Vice Chairperson of LCF Board of Trustees and Executive Director of TeaM Energy Foundation Inc.

With the theme, “Co-creating the future through CSR,” the focus of this year’s forum will be about achieving the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which is a global agenda adopted by world leaders with the goal to promote dignity, equality and prosperity for all.

“CSR experts and representatives from the business sector will be gathered to discuss issues as well as provide insights and best practices to further intensify efforts toward the accomplishment of SDGs for inclusive growth,” explained Roderick F. De Castro who is also the Chair of the CSR Expo and Conference.
