R3RUN this 2014 calls on Filipinos to embody the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) basic principles of waste management as a way of consumer’s life. Nowadays, as the world faces many extreme and unusual weather conditions, R3RUN primary aim is to help recreate a new economy for the country where demands for green products and services are greater. “On a macro perspective, we ambitiously hope that the greater demands of consumers for green products and services may push for our businesses and the economy as a whole to shift into a more sustainable or eco-conscious production,” says Quanta Paper corporate strategist and Race Committee head Neil Erich Galicia. This objective directly addresses global warming since sustainable business practice, like in manufacturing industry is a key in reducing significant amount of C02 emissions.

Founded on business principle of sustainability, Quanta Paper manufactures hygienic tissue products using used office paper as raw materials instead of virgin fibers. In traditional paper making industry, virgin fibers are extracted from matured trees, which contributes in the deforestation of many of the world’s rainforest. In 2013, Quanta Paper develop its Sustainability Framework. Sustainability Framework then serves as a management tool to guide the Company in measuring its carbon and environmental footprints, ensuring that it maximizes the use of its resources like energy and water, and controls its waste at the minimum possible level. The R3RUN is a manifestation of one of the four sustainability strategies, which is Market Shaping and Education. With this sustainability strategy, the Company uses its brands and products to guide and influence consumers’ purchasing preferences for green labelled products.

Guided by its two main objectives this year, namely, to inspire environmental action among Filipino consumers and to raise awareness on climate change, R3RUN 2014 highlight of activities will center in empowering men and women through consumers’ education. The primary aim of the Company to promote its green labelled products like the Fresh bathroom tissue and Eco-Hygiene solutions through this advocacy run is an attempt to sway consumers’ purchasing decisions towards eco-friendly preferable products. The Swap for Change, where runners could bring at minimum one (1) kilogram of used office paper and swap it for some hygienic products from Quanta Paper, is a means for participants to realize that there is opportunity in wastes or in recycling, the same opportunity the Company seen and found when it started its business a decade ago in the Philippines. There will also be a Pledge Wall, which will allow participants to imprint a renewed personal promise for the conservation of the environment. During the programme proper, Quanta Paper will also remember those forest rangers who have been killed protecting our natural resources.

To support the Company’s aggressive and ambitious campaign to empower Filipino consumers, Quanta Paper has partnered with some active organizations that are in the frontline in protecting and in conserving the environment, especially on issues concerning global warming or climate change. These organizations will have their respective interactive exhibits in the activity and programme venue, which is inspired by an EcoVillage theme, showcasing community building programs on current environmental and climate issues.

Quanta Paper principal partner is the Climate Change Commission (CCC) Philippines. Being among the most vulnerable countries to be affected by climate change, in 2009 the CCC is formed through RA 9729, which main function is to monitor, coordinate and evaluate the government programs to prevent and reduce the adverse impact of climate change in the country. The Commission formulated the National Framework Strategy on Climate Change or NFSCC, which where adopted in 2010. It was then that multi-sectoral consultations were held to create the National Climate Change Action Plan or NCCAP. “The ultimate goal of NCCAP is to build the adapted capacity of women and men in their communities, increase the resilience of vulnerable sectors and natural ecosystem to climate change and optimize mitigation opportunities towards gender responsive and bright-base sustainable development.”

Quanta Paper has also invited the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. or PCEPSDI, a non-stock, non-profit and non-government organization, which acts as the administrator and secretariat of the National Ecolabelling Programme - Green Choice Philippines or NELP-GCP. It certifies environmentally preferable products and services based on ISO 1424 guiding principles and procedures. NELP-GCP is a voluntary, multiple criteria-based, and third party programme that aims to encourage clean manufacturing practices and consumption of environmentally preferable products and services. This government programme is seen as an important marketing instrument to complement laws and regulations for the production and supply of environmentally preferable products and to guide consumers' purchasing preferences. The programme is under the guidance of the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Philippine Standards and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau.
