Washed Away and Looted, The Body Shop Still Shares

Their branch in Tacloban was completely wiped out by super typhoon Yolanda and their stocks and cash register looted in the aftermath of the world’s strongest typhoon in recent history.

But that did not stop global beauty brand The Body Shop from doing its own share in helping out the survivors of this tragedy.

“The Body Shop Philippines and our sister company Marithe Francois Gerbaud lost nearly P10 million in the floods and the looting that followed. Still, our customers, our employees and the company as a whole believe that we could still help those who are in desperate need for aid. And that’s when we came up with the idea of putting donation boxes in our shops,” explained Joanie Gajes, marketing officer of The Body Shop Philippines.

Gajes said that they designated their major branches in Metro Manila such as in the Mall of Asia, Ermita and Megamall to receive in-kind donations for the typhoon victims.

Gajes personally delivered the boxes of pre-loved clothes donated by their employees and their clients to Operation Blessing Philippines, the humanitarian arm of CBN Asia.

During that time, the management and staff of The Body Shop were still searching for four of their staff in their Tacloban branch who were among the thousands reported missing.

“Thankfully, after a few days, we were informed that our four employees were able to ride the military C130 that brought them to Villamor Air Base. When they got to Manila, they proceeded to our head office and it was such a relief to see them. It was an answered prayer,” Gajes adds.

Operation Blessing Philippines Corporate Communications and Resource Development Manager Gigi Endaya received the donations from The Body Shop Philippines.

Gajes said that they chose to donate the items to Operation Blessing believing that these will be delivered quickly and distributed efficiently among the survivors.

“We would like our valued clients to know that The Body Shop is more than just a beauty shop. Our company has always been known as a caring company and has long actively espoused significant advocacies. We would continue to think of ways on how to further help the survivors of Yolanda,” Gajes adds.
