Robotics Training in UP Diliman

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For me, summer is when we take a two month break from school and is usually the boring part of the year. From the past 10 summers (except last summer), I usually do nothing apart from sleeping, liking pictures on Facebook, eating food, and watching time pass by. However, for the first time, I’ve been productive last summer.

Last month of April, I’ve done nothing aside from playing, chatting, eating food, and sleeping. This is also the month of my birthday. I felt that my birthday was just an ordinary day, nothing happened special apart from the greetings on Facebook. As the days passed by, I decided to play basketball so I can be a little bit productive.

A teacher messaged Reinelle and I to join the training on Robotics sometime last week of May. At first, I don’t want to come because I’m lazy and the last week of May is the time that I will have my “true vacation”. However, as the days go by, I realized that I need to be more productive so I decided to come. This is also the week that someone from the review school called to remind me about the upcoming review classes.

Robotics is the branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, and/or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics.

The concept of creating machines that can operate autonomously dates back to classical times, but research into the functionality and potential uses of robots did not grow substantially until the 20th century.

Throughout history, robotics has been often seen to mimic human behavior, and often manage tasks in a similar fashion. Today, robotics is a rapidly growing field, as technological advances continue, research, design, and building new robots serve various practical purposes, whether domestically, commercially, or militarily. Many robots do jobs that are hazardous to people such as defusing bombs, exploring shipwrecks, and mines.

On the second week of May, we had our review classes for UPCAT. The class schedule is M-W-F and 8-5 pm so I’m expecting that this will be a tiring week. I’m somewhat bored in the class because almost all of the lessons being taught there are taught back in school. As the days pass by, Carl and I met new friends inside the classroom. After class, Carl and I always go to the malls along Marcos Highway to have some time off.

On the third week of May, we are still having our review class and at the same schedule. As usual, I’m bored every class except the last one because this is the day that I’m going home late and to have some bonding time with my friends. We went to the mall and there, we eat, talk and have some fun.

On the fifth week of May, Reinelle and I attended a Robotics training in UP Diliman and we represented our school. The training was 5 days and 8-5 pm so I couldn't do anything more than just sleep when I got home. The training was hard especially the programming because we have no background on it and had a hard time understanding it, but after a night of watching tutorials on the internet, we finally understood it. On the final day, we built a robot and had a racing competition with other schools. Unfortunately, we lost the race so we just watched the other schools in the competition. After the training, we head back home.

Overall, this is the best summer that I’ve had, even though this is not the summer that I’m expecting and we didn’t go to the beach. There are many new things that I’ve learned, new places I’ve been to, and new friendships formed. I hope that next summer will be better.
