Nippon Paint Reveals Winners of Prestigious Design Competition

Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines recently revealed the first winners of its prestigious design competition, Asia Young Designer Award (A.Y.D.A) during the awarding ceremony held at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel. Nippon Paint executives together with industry professionals, competition judges and guests attended the event to witness the gold winners of the Architecture and Interior Design category who will be representing the country in the regional grand competition slated early next year in Jogyakarta, Indonesia.

A.Y.D.A, formerly known as Nippon Paint Young Designer Award was re-launched this year to reflect its widening reach and its increasing significance to the design scene in Asia. From its debut with 87 entries solely from Malaysia, the competition has grown to collect over 3,500 entries from last year across 12 different countries, namely the Philippines, Singapore, Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, China, Japan, Hong Kong its place of origin Malaysia. This year, AYDA was extended to three additional countries, namely Sri Lanka, India and Taiwan. The design tilt was first opened in the Philippines in 2014.

This year, the combined number of entries for both Architecture and Interior Design totalled to over 1,200 submissions coming from 27 major institutions all over the country. With the theme “Be Bold. Be Free. Be You”, the young designers are challenged to produce new and refreshing concepts or designs that encapsulate boldness, freedom and originality. 

Gladys Goh, Nippon Paint Malaysia Group General Manager made her opening remarks as she welcomed the guests and students who continuously supported the design competition and shared her positive impression on the successful turnout of entries this year in the Philippines
The judges in the annual competition are reputable and renowned architects and interior designers in the industry, who keenly filtered through each submission to select the most creative and innovative designs for each category, while also providing participants necessary feedback and advice. The judges for the Architecture Category are Ar. Nina Bailon Arce, Ar. Consuelo Buencamino, Ar. and IDr. Eduardo Calma, Ar. Jose Ramon Carunungan, Ar. Chona Elvas-Ponce, Ar. Maria Benita Regala, and Ar. Abelardo M. Tolentino, Jr. Meanwhile, judges for the Interior Design Category are IDr. Marichie Costelo, IDr. Jose Maria Hubilla, IDr. Wilfrid Nicholo Magcase, IDr. Belen Morey, IDr. Michael Pizarro, IDr. Mel Reyes, and IDr. Vincent Louie Tan.

The gold winner for the Architecture category was bagged by Maria Rebecca Plaza from the National University for her work, “Project Noah”, while Noelle Samantha Bernardo from De La Salle – College of St. Benilde received the gold prize for the Interior Design category for her winning design “Modern Farmland”.

AYDA grand prize winners received P50,000 cash prize, as well as a 6-month internship with top architectural firm Aidea, Inc. and top interior design firm Lor Calma & Partners. They will also be given the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of design, network with like-minded peers, and attend the once-in-a-lifetime learning experience in Bali, Indonesia organized by Nippon Paint.
