JR NBA Returns to the Philippines for Seventh Consecutive Year

The Jr. NBA program was first conducted in the Philippines in 2007 and has more than doubled in participation in the past six years. Each year a new city benefits from the grassroots basketball program that involves not just young players but also their parents and coaches.

Alaska brings back the Jr. NBA for the seventh consecutive year, and expanded to include a new program for the girls with Jr. WNBA. The tip off in Manila last Saturday, January 18, will move to Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Dagupan City, including first-time stops in Surigao and Iloilo - reaching over 500 schools and communities nationwide.

The Jr. NBA / Jr. WNBA is the league's international youth development program open to all youth aged between 10 to 14. It admiringly promotes basketball participation, sportsmanship and teamwork, and an active lifestyle among children.

These kind of programs surely highlights attributes that are worth emulated by the youth even outside basketball. The youth will benefit from the efforts of the program towards a more successful career whether within sports or in other facets of their life. Definitely the program offers a large scale impact on the lives of the participating players, including the coaches, educators, and even the parents involved.

Both girl and boy participants will get the chance to participate in school clinics, selection camps and coaches seminars at numerous venues across the country. The Regional Selection Camps will proceed sometime March and April after which the top 50 boys and top 24 girls fro all over the Philippines will be chosen to participate in the National Training Camp in Manila on April 25 to 27. This will culminate with the selection of 10 Jr. NBA and 4 Jr. WNBA All-Stars to compete against a counterpart team from another country.

There will also be a search for the Coach of the Year awardee. Sefu Bernard, NBA Asia's Senior Director of Basketball, will serve as the Jr. NBA / Jr. WNBA Camp Director and oversee the Coach of the Year Operations program along with local coaches selected by the NBA, and coaches of the Alaska Power Camp, led by PBA Legend Jojo Lastimosa.

10 Jr. NBA, and 4 Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year finalists will be selected to participate in the National Training Camp under Jr. NBA Coaches to enhance their coaching skills.
