The climate crisis should be on the agenda of candidates in the 2022 elections

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Political candidates in the 2022 national elections must put the climate crisis on their agenda and ensure that the Philippines complies with our international commitments, environmental group WWF-Philippines said.

“The climate, nature, and environment should be on the agenda of candidates along with our advocacies on climate justice and equity. There needs to be a lot of thought and attention on how we will implement the proper actions in line with our international commitments,” Atty. Angela Consuelo Ibay, WWF-Philippines’ Head of Climate and Energy, said.

“I think now is the time to really ensure that. We need to lobby with the candidates to put the climate on their agenda and to think of it carefully. All of us will be impacted by climate change and are already feeling it,” she said during an online webinar co-organized by the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST) and WWF-Philippines titled “Energy Transition to Halt the Climate Crisis.”

In the recently concluded UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, the Philippines was a signatory in the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use which commits to halting deforestation and restoring forest land, the COP26 Coal to Clean Power Transition Agreement and the Global Methane Pledge.

The Philippines sent a delegation led by Department of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III to COP26 which ran from October 31 up to November 12. The conference ended one day beyond the schedule due to the negotiations over the text of the Glasgow Climate Pact.

As the election season heats up in the Philippines, Ibay called on those officials to ensure that the agreements they signed in the international conference with hundreds of other countries will become institutionalized and continue to be implemented by the next administration.

“Beholden dapat yung next administration to keep up with our international commitments and international agreements,” Ibay said. “At the end of the day, babalik rin sa atin yan. We will have to be accountable to those international commitments. So therefore dapat yung mga candidates natin ngayon nasa agenda nila yan.”

CREST President Rei Panaligan said that the Philippines is among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world and is already experiencing the effects of climate change and extreme weather events like strong typhoons, severe drought, heatwaves, El Nino, and La Nina that have become normal annual occurrences.

“What we are experiencing now is an increase in temperature of 1.2 degrees compared to the pre-industrial baseline. What will the world look like if the temperature increases to 1.5 degrees, 2 degrees or higher?” Panaligan said.

“Our world is in a climate emergency. According to scientists, we need fast and immediate actions to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and prevent the further worsening of the climate,” he added.

Majority of the energy sources the country relies on comes from fossil fuels such as coal which is a major source of GHGs. Panaligan said this is why a transition to renewable energy is urgently needed.

“Even though historically the Philippines’ GHG emissions are small compared to developed countries, we should not belittle our contribution to the climate crisis because our emissions are higher compared to 100 other countries and in 2020, we are ranked 7th globally in terms of coal expansion,” Atty. Avril de Torres of the Center for Energy, Ecology and Development (CEED) said.

“That’s how many coal power plants are planned to be built. And in fact there should have been more coal plants operating and in the pipeline because back in 2012, the forecasted energy mix of the Department of Energy (DOE) was 70 to 80% from coal,” Torres said.

Torres cited the 2020 coal moratorium by the DOE as an important step in the energy transition as this halted 6 gigawatts of coal capacity. However, a CEED study published July 2021 found that proponents of 10 coal projects are still in the process of obtaining permits while 6 proposed projects were allowed to continue.

Maris Cardenas, Executive Director of the Center for Empowerment, Innovation and Training on Renewable Energy (CENTRE) emphasized the need to speed up the growth of the renewable energy sector so that it can contribute 35% of the total Philippines energy mix by 2030.

“That target should be higher but the 35% target is already low and yet very hard to achieve,” Cardenas said. “That should be a reality. We need to make the 35% target an imperative and not merely an aspirational target.”

Climate and renewable energy institutions who also co-organized the event include Laudato Si PhilippinesPower 4 People Coalition, and Renewable Energy Transition Institute (Reboot PH).

PATAFA to drop EJ Obiena from the national training pool of athletes

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Why do we hate our olympic-level athletes? Wesley So. And now EJ Obiena. This is how NOT to retain world-class athletes. Sports politics has been the Achilles heel of Philippine sports. Why dropped our lone bright star in the world stage? PATAFA is driving out deserving athletes from the country by every means necessary.

The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) recommends dropping EJ Obiena from the national training pool of athletes. Coach Vitaliy Petrov will also be terminated as coach.

The PATAFA has recommended that EJ Obiena be dropped from the national training pool, effective immediately. EJ Obiena, is currently the third-best pole vaulter in the world.

It also recommends filing an estafa complaint against the Filipino Olympian and the termination of Obiena's coach Vitaly Petrov.

It is also recommending that a criminal complaint of estafa be filed against Obiena.

PATAFA's investigative committee found that Obiena misappropriated funds amounting to over 60,000 euros that were released to him by PSC and PATAFA, meant for Vitaly Petrov's coaching fees.

PATAFA is also recommending that a complaint be filed against Petrov before World Athletics for violation of the Integrity Code of Conduct, and that his adviser, James Lafferty, be declared persona non grata.

Asked if Obiena's side of the story was considered by the PATAFA investigative committee, PATAFA chairman Cong. Rufus Rodriguez said Obiena was given three instances to appear and explain his side.

"Obiena has been given all the chances to appear, he did not," Rodriguez said.

PATAFA president Philip Ella Juico: Petrov made a collection agent out of me, out of PATAFA... Later on... nilaglag ang PATAFA at ako and even Bupka by saying that we forced him and all of that. We're going to the ethics committee because of this 'dishonest' behavior.

Juico: We were thrust in to this situation. We walked into it. We did not ask for this. On the contrary, the report brought so much sadness and feelings of betrayal. We had to face the challenge because we should account for all funds given to us.

Juico: [Obiena] now has to face the consequences which could've been markedly different had he chosen to believe in people whom he has known for the last several years.

Juico: Let those parties he chose continue to help solve his problems and situation. We will be there to help whatever we can.

Juico: We have been minding our own business until Petrov blew the whistle... We were a gold collection agent and he is the latest of the old model of a jukebox. Good luck to him too. He will also be explaining his conduct with the World Athletics.

Juico says PATAFA will be sending a group of athletes to a three-month training overseas for a chance to get "specialized training and access to higher level competitions."

PATAFA who? I hope these clowns get the karma they deserve. Athlete ba sila or sports enthusiasts?? Ugh.

EJ deserves better. Our athletes deserve better. Our athletes aspire excellence.

Someone should fire these bozos at PATAFA. Let the Olympic Committee take over being Obiena is an Olympian.

Clearly..can we just abolish this PATAWA--este PATAFA and create a new organization..mga kupal lang talaga na pasahod pa ng bayan.

Jusko Ej Obiena has just been named WORLD NO. 3 in Pole Vault tapos ganito??

I really won't be shocked kung iba na kulay ng passport ni EJ next olympics. It's time for EJ to find another country. It's no use being a member of the Philippines team. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re gonna lose the top 3 pole vaulter in the world because of these people at PATAFA. No wonder some of our athletes are getting their love abroad. Go get that bread outside the Philippines. When we see China or any other major country get Obiena to play for them, we have no one to blame but PATAFA.

Filipinos should rally behind Obiena. He does not deserve any kind of harassment from this association led not by even an athlete but a corrupt and trash POLITICIAN. This is the fate of the Philippine Sport and the reason why loving this country is difficult is because we have PATAFA.

PATAFA choosing to drop EJ Obiena is indicative of how little this country cares about its athletes and governing bodies are surprised that athletes choose to rep other countries.

"Puso" and "Pinoy Pride" are not enough to compensate the hard work they've put in to their craft.

Philippine sports in general is already in jeopardy despite a strong showing at the Tokyo Olympics because of decisions like this.

Wesley So was the first domino to fall. Yuka Saso followed his lead and did what was best for her. Expect others to follow them soon.

Abolish PATAFA.. The government should stop regulating athletes.

Again, WTF PATAFA.

Ej, go play for other countries. The Philippines doesn't deserve you.

PNP-CIDG to file charges against Gwyneth Chua and others

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippines National Police (PNP-CIDG) says it will file charges against Gwyneth Chua and eight other people, including her parents and personnel of a quarantine hotel, for violating health protocols.

PNP-CIDG will be filing criminal charges against Gwyneth Anne Chua, the controversial ‘Poblacion Girl’ who skipped the mandatory quarantine for returning Filipinos from abroad, and eight other people for violations of the health protocols.

PNP-CIDG: Gwyneth Chua was fetched by her father from Berjaya Hotel the night of her checkin on December 22, and was dropped off by her mother at the hotel December 25. Cases will also be filed against Chua's parents for violation of RA 11332.

CIDG says a total of 9 people will be filed with the complaints, including hotel personnel. It's a test case of sorts because instead of Section 9, CIDG says the violation is Rule XI, Section 1(g)(iii) and (iv) of RA 11332 revised IRR.

CIDG says it has CCTV footage that will corroborate the testimonies of witnesses which include establishments, and concerned individuals.

The CIDG, meanwhile, did not find sufficient evidence to file charges against the individuals who were with her during the party on December 23, 2021.

“Will be filing”… that’s how sluggish things really are in this country. Sana hindi puro press release lang.. I hope that the hotel gets sued too as they are also part of the sparking problem. Many heads must roll...not just one or a few.

To see is to believe. Baka mamaya pera pera lang din sila. Filing a case is one thing, maparusahan sila is another.

Yung mga sumundo sa kanya sa hotel should also be accountable as "accessory to the crime" alam na nilang galing US kinunsinti pa nila lumabas.

Kapag si Gwyneth Chua since mayaman... investigation.... kaso..... then later on dismissed, parang si Koko Pimentel...

The same to the couple and another woman who flaunted her photos while taking massage. Whether or not the quarantine "skippers" tested positive, they should be fully dealt with.

I hope they also dig in deeper whoever her so called “connections” are because who knows if those connections also made some participation for her to be that brave to violate the protocols. Those “connections” must be exposed as well.

Implementation is much appreciated on this matter! The government should really lift a finger fast !!

Gwyneth Chua can be convicted of the quarantine violations, but I doubt if she can be convicted of causing the actual spread of the covid to her friends, the science in the Philippines is not yet that precise.

Nakakaurat na talaga yung takes na “Gwyneth Chua singlehandedly caused the surge” ha.

The hate is justified but the issue goes well beyond a single civilian’s actions. this long into the pandemic & with developments like these, ano nga ba nagbago sa tugon ng gobyerno?

Wala pa diyan yung accessibility ng vaccines.... especially for the provinces. Only NCR and the big cities of provinces are blessed with easy access to the vaccines.

Most importantly, we should vigilantly watch for violators who are known for their connections with politicians or anyone in this administration.

Let's monitor if justice will work on these privileged people. Later na natin palakpakan if IATF, DOT, PNP-CIDG, DOH did it already.
