New research by WWF, Agrocampus Ouest (France), University of British Columbia (Canada), Charles Darwin Foundation (Galapagos), and Instituto Nacional de Pesca (Ecuador) warns that communities in developing countries that depend heavily on fishing are severely threatened by the climate crisis, as fish biomass is expected to decrease by between 30 to 40% in some tropical regions by 2100 In a business-as-usual mitigation scenario.

The new study examines the effects of the climate crisis to small-scale fisheries in developing countries combining scientific climate models with social science approaches that incorporate local ecological knowledge. The assessment focuses on the impacts of and potential adaptation strategies to climate change for small-scale fishers in mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, South Africa and the Philippines.

Severe effects, even at 1.5°C global warming

Philipp Kanstinger, marine expert at the WWF, reports: "As the results of the study show, climate change has significant negative consequences for the majority of fish species caught by small-scale fishers, including some of the most commercially important species like sardines, anchovies and tuna. Even if global warming were limited to 1.5°C in the most favourable scenario, most fish species remain at risk of losing their habitats and food sources.

In the coming decades, many fish species will be coping with temperatures that exceed comfortable limits for them to thrive, affecting their populations and distribution patterns. Less fish means less food and less income for people whose livelihoods are tied to our seas. The small-scale fishers, who account for half of the world's fish production, will be disproportionately affected by the consequences of a warmer ocean."

Tuna disappears from the Philippines

The study finds that fisheries in countries nearest to the equator will be the most heavily affected by warmer and more acidic seas. Kanstinger continues:

"In some countries, catches will be halved by 2050. Of the countries studied, the Philippines will be hit particularly hard: in traditional hand-line tuna fishing, large decreases in the amount of fish caught are foreseen. These losses are difficult to compensate with other fish species, both in terms of the nutritional value of other species in the region and the trade value of tuna to international markets. If the tuna disappears from the coasts of the island state, people who depend on these and other fish will simultaneously lose a vital source of food and income, threatening their livelihoods. Climate adaptation strategies and plans for their implementation must urgently be developed and supported by all relevant stakeholders.”

Fishers confirm: the climate crisis is already here

The case studies show that small-scale fishers are already strongly affected by the climate crisis. Among the most frequently cited observations are unusually high sea temperatures, the increase of stratification and physiological impacts on marine organisms.

Fishers also reported a greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as floods and strong winds. All three countries are already affected by declining catches, either due to reduced fish stocks or altered fish distribution as species move further away from the coast or into deeper, cooler waters where they are no longer accessible by small-scale fishing gear.

Fishers are also concerned about changes they have witnessed to marine ecosystems, especially to coral reefs that are dying or have already perished, as they serve as crucial fish spawning and nursery grounds. The cumulative effects of these changes are particularly devastating for coral reefs, which are home to 25% of all marine life.

The socio-economic consequences of the climate crisis are unprecedented. Fishers fear shrinking incomes due to dwindling fish stocks, and worry about their personal safety as they must travel further to find fish in seas where extreme weather conditions are increasingly frequent.

Kanstinger warns: "If our emissions of CO2 continue on their observed trajectory, we can now anticipate a mass extinction of species in the oceans. Many marine ecosystems will collapse. If we remain inactive with regard to fisheries and the climate crisis, this will lead to dramatic losses. Millions of people will lose their livelihoods and go hungry."

Better fisheries management and fighting the climate crisis

The WWF study concludes that the small-scale fishing sector is not currently equipped to adequately adapt to the climate crisis. Marine ecosystems are experiencing dramatic changes at a rapid pace as fisheries continue to depend on them. If the sector fails to adapt to these changes, it will collapse. However, if global warming is kept within the limit of 1.5°C, scientists estimate that globally sustainable fisheries management can actually increase fish biomass in the oceans by 60 percent. Urgent action is required to steer both oceanic and social scenarios to more thriving and resilient outcomes.

Kanstinger warns: "With a human population of nearly 10 billion anticipated by 2050, we will need more resources than ever before. This cannot be met under the current circumstances. Only by shifting to sustainable management of fish stocks, reducing discarded catches, increasing consumer demand for small and fast-growing fish species, transitioning to sustainable aquaculture and accounting for the changes the climate crisis is already delivering to our seas and societies can the situation improve."

WWF recommendations for better fisheries management and control strategies, as well as climate adaptation practices call for the fisheries sector to become more responsible, adaptable, participatory, precautionary and social, including gender equality. Better and more effective monitoring and control of fishing activities, together with investment in better equipment and scientific data are urgently required.

How European consumers can help

Philipp Kanstinger concludes: "It is important that consumers choose sustainable fish and seafood products while consciously consuming less seafood, especially when sustainable choices are not available. Only sustainable fisheries and sustainable aquaculture can ensure the conservation of the ecosystems and species which support the livelihoods of 800 million people around the world and keep some of our favourite food items on our dinner plates."

Senator Cynthia Villar is Trending Again Due to No Good Reasons

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Whenever Cynthia Villar is trending, you know she has said something terrible.

Hahahha when I saw her sa list, I was like "Ano na naman kaya sinabi ni Tita Cynthia?" “Tang*na, ano na naman kahayupan ang entry mo this time!?”

I was like LMAO, the word "greediness" suits so well; she's a politician who cares nothing for the countrymen, but only for wealth and properties. imagine, mali raw na hindi iconvert ang farmlands to infrastructures for the economy? LOL

And those are the statements caught on video or radio ..... if there's a 24/7 feed from her mouth , she will be trending everyday.

Mabuti nga siguro kung salita lang, e paano na kung may ginawa/ginagawa/gagawin na terrible?

Senator Cynthia Villar lambasted Philippine Carabao Center executive Arnel del Barrio when she found out that the total milk production of the country did not even reach at least 1 percent of the demand in 2018, 28 years after the agency's establishment.

The best carabaos in the Philippines can give 7 liters of milk in a day. Average ones, only 3 liters a day.

Senator Cynthia Villar became upset when she learned that cows in Israel can yield 40 liters of milk in a single day.

She manages to say something offensive literally everytime she opens her mouth.

Yes, of course. making a suicide joke for the people who was neglected by the law and abused by the people like you. Cynthia Villar isn't at all vile and guillotine-worthy.

Being a failure or failing on something should not warrant a suicide attempt. But you, a Senator, actually encouraged that idea. The mental health profession are struggling already to remove the stigma on different mental health problems. How dare you Cynthia Villar.

Encouraging people to commit suicide for what she believed in as a failure performance? I think she should practice what she preaches since of all the Senators, the least performing could be her. Can we also call the attention of the President?

Senator Cynthia Villar said it is wrong to say that farmlands should not be converted to build houses or factories as these are also necessary for the country’s economy.

Uy pasimpleng tanggol sa conflict of interest ng mga subdibisyones niya oh.

You say there's nothing wrong with farmlands being converted because it's good for the economy? Are you sure it's not because it's good for Vista Land?

And the Villars offer the farmers who own the land so little for their farmlands. To a farmer, anything more than 100k would seem like a big amount.

I fucking cried at this. Farmers are so important yet our government treats them like trash.

Our Agrarian Reform needs so much work done though. Our farmers are unproductive compared to the rest of the world. Small farmers below 2ha cannot compete because farming now needs tech and capital. Just watch how the Dutch became one of the largest food exporters.

Those farmlands could’ve been more useful if farmers are given the right support/incentives. Maybe we wouldn’t need to import rice and the young gen will have more interest in Agri.
The same logic of Cynthia should be used for land conversions. Why can't housing and factories be more efficient to occupy less land? Stop blaming agriculture. It employs 2/3 of the population.

Converting farmlands into factories, malls, and subdivisions as a new modus of landlords to secure power among themselves while the farmers remain landless and powerless.

Cynthia Villar is the embodiment of what I think is capitalism. Defending the conversion of farmlands into factories and houses to help the economy. I'm pretty sure it helps rich corporations such as hers but how about the poor farmers that they unfairly bought their lands?

She could also argue that the middle class will benefit by opening up job opportunities. but no I see it as hiring people to make you rich while the middle class is just getting a bit of that profit. How about the poor who didn't have that opportunity of tenure? They get poorer.

Sorry for being Marxist and all but you are that ideological superstructure that enforces this ideology - that your actions are of the good of the country in mind but is actually born of disgusting greed and in the endless insatiable pursuit of power.

I hope that someday she will learn the human suffering she has caused. "Get off your high horse, you prick!"

The history of the Philippines is a history of land grabbing.

Cynthia Villar's shameless defense of the conversion of agriculture lands into subdivisions is an insult not just to Filipino farmers but to the Filipino struggle to be free.

Why does she even chair the Agrarian Reform and Environment;
and the Agriculture and Food in the Philippines Senate when these areas are clearly in conflict with her family’s business?

She is not only shameless but unethical and the other members of the Philippines Senate enabled her by consenting to her obvious strategic positioning.

How much did Villar donate to the campaign and election of Duterte?

Hmm. There is so much disgruntlement across social media against Cynthia Villar as a senator AND YET she was the TOP 1 SENATOR in the 2019 elections.

Could we be speaking in echo chambers? If you haven't yet, take your dissatisfaction to the polls and register to vote!

Cynthia Villar doesn't care for the people, all she wants is a good business deal. Pustahan pa.

Wow. I mean, our expectations for Cynthia Villar is already that low but somehow, SOMEHOW, she even made it lower. I don't know how she does it but I applaud the commitment.

When Cynthia Villar isn't reprimanding poor Pinoys for being poor, minimizing the hard work & sacrifices of nurses & frontliners during this pandemic, or justifying the conversion of farmlands into residential areas—she is busy coming up w/ another way to showcase her stupidity.

There is not enough $$$ in the world to buy Cynthia Villar even a modicum of class, integrity, or respect.

If you ever feel dumb, just remember that a whole-ass Cynthia Villar exists. She is like the Buknoy Glamurrr of the senate. She’s such a dumbass, like she’s literally a walking broom sweeping up a storm of stupidity.

I just realized if Hogwarts has Dolores Umbridge, Philiipine government has Cynthia Villar. But it's an unfair comparison. Objectively speaking, may itsura si Umbridge. Yung isa kasi parang creature sa Forbidden Forest. Lol.

If we stop giving her clout, mag-reresign ba siya?

Seriously, please hire the best team that could rehabilitate your greedy, tone-deaf, & "matapobre" image.

Facebook Avatar is Trending as Users create their own images

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Mark Zuckerberg: *creates fb avatar for people to enjoy. Not harming anybody*

Pee-noise on twitter: Puro Avatar umay (shows immense toxicity so that they feel validated as "superior" while in reality just an ersatz feeling that border sociological cliche.)

"Puro Avatar" is trending in the Philippines. Just wow. Can't you just let people enjoy things? Ang cute cute kaya! Saang part 'yung cringey?

Please stop making it a bad thing. It's totally harmless. The world is already in a bad state esp. our country. Lots of people are dealing with anxiety and depression. Making those avatars is just a simple joy for others. Kung naiirita ka, mag-deactivate ka. That simple. Lol!

Is it harming anybody? NO. Then do a little favor and allow the people that are out of your business to enjoy the little things.
Yes, freedom of speech is nice and all but also shut the f*ck up sometimes.

This avatar trend will die down eventually. If your concern is "puro avatar" all over your newsfeed, hide them. Or don't open the app altogether for the time being.

The Covid-19 situation is stressful already... let people enjoy these little things. Okay?

Secretly, I love it when something trends coz I'll have something to post on my blog. You could all just look at it then move on with your lives. So if puro avatar nasa Facebook, no biggie. Maybe, that's how they cope up with this fvckup society.

Lumalabas ang creativity ng mga users on how they see themselves. There is nothing bad about it. Have fun with puro avatar!

I enjoyed creating one for myself, even more so seeing others' works
