Awit ng Paghilom: A Gift for the Children of the Storm

Wazzup Pilipinas!

There has been many efforts already to provide assistance to the many survivors of the devastating Typhoon Yolanda that struck the Philippines especially those areas directly affected by the flooding and destruction of their homes and the death of their loved ones.

We are very grateful that the International communities from all over the world are sending in their contributions to help rebuild and rehabilitate a country that has suffered from many calamities. We are forever proud of our fellow Filipinos who, in their own special way, has made initiatives to help ease the burden of the survivors who were left with grief and sorrow. The bad memories will remain so it is up to all of us to give them hope for a better tomorrow. We want to give them all the assurance that they truly need and it may take forever before we could really heal their pain.

Among the many who listened to the outcries of the many victims of the storm are the Elements Music Camp. They were originally envisioned to develop young Filipino songwriters with the hope of one day defining the unique Filipino sound. The highlight of the camp, that has been ongoing for 4 years already, has always been the production of original compositions created by the campers as guided by their mentors, but this time the segment took on a different twist because they couldn't ignore the call for help.

Typhoon Yolanda seems to be the strongest storm ever recorded in Philippine history, and this devastation needs to be addressed equally by hopefully several efforts from many groups including our very own Elements Music Camp.

As what Ryan Cayabyab has said "Like everyone else in camp, I also felt an urgent need to do something and not simply to be a mere outsider feeling sorry for teh sufferings many of our countrymen continue to go through. This is what compelled me to challenge the participants in this year's camp to compose songs dedicated to the victims of the typhoon. I guess when artists collaborate and are one in their desire to express a common and deep longing in their hearts, the outcome can only be one thing: beautiful music. This is what inspired us to make this into an album and to raise funds from the sales thereof."

Pag-hilom in Tagalog means 'to heal', while in Bisaya 'hilom' is the word for 'silence'. The choice of Awit ng Paghilom was born out of the thought that, in the most difficult moments in one's life, music can provide the "healing silence" to one's troubled soul.

Through these songs, it is the wish of all involved in this honorable project that they may help begin the healing process of our beleaguered countrymen and inspire them to once again believe and take an active role in rebuilding the bright future that awaits them.

All the proceeds of this effort will be given to help rebuild the lives of our fellow Filipinos through the provision of many necessities like portable lamps to provide light especially at the areas where there are still no electricity. Having a light during the dark nights also gives hope to our fellowmen to believe that it will not be forever dark days for all of them. Their future will soon be bright as everyone offers their own contribution towards rebuilding their homes.

I would have to commend the mentors for hitting two birds in one stone here. They are now helping aspiring songwriters enhance their crafts, and also indirectly touching the lives of the people they will be helping out of the funds that will be generated out from the sales of the album.

This is surely an honor to be part of the people who will share this news to my fellowmen and help convince them that every album bought from Astovision music stores or downloaded from the digital distribution via iTunes will do a lot of good to our country.

Like what many have said, do everything necessary towards the progress of our country, and the only way to ensure ours will completely succeed in all its endeavors towards economic stability is if we all generously contribute our own time, skills and talents to whatever admirable advocacy project we can come up with. Every little help counts because it eventually a huge success when combined as one.

Be sure to download the Awit ng Pag-Hilom album in iTunes starting March 25, 2014, and buy the actual album in Astrovision music stores nationwide.

The album is made up of 10 original tracks composed by the campers themselves under the guidance of 18 mentors coming from the best of the music industry.  These mentors include Ryan Cayabyab, Ebe Dancel, Jim Paredes, Quest, Armi Millare, Jazz Nicolas, Joey Ayala, Gabby Alipe, Jimmy Antiporda, Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon, Jay Contreras, Aia De Leon, Jay Durias, Gloc-9, and Rey Valera.
