Rethinking Architecture: Filipino Researchers Propose Groundbreaking Framework Linking Urban Design to Microbial Health

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

What if the way we design our homes, schools, and offices could shape the microscopic world we live in—and, in turn, our own health? A groundbreaking study by a team of Filipino researchers dares to ask this question, offering a radical new perspective on how architecture and microbiology can intersect to transform urban living.

In the heart of Metro Manila, where concrete and climate co-exist in a delicate balance, a group of visionaries is challenging how we think about the spaces we inhabit. Their pioneering study, led by architecture graduate Ma. Beatrice Villoria of De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, puts forward a revolutionary framework that bridges architectural design and urban microbiome research. And what started as a lone thesis project has evolved into a multidisciplinary movement, drawing expertise from architecture, microbiology, engineering, and environmental science.

At its core, the study unpacks a powerful truth: built environments are living ecosystems. Every wall, every window, every breath shared indoors influences the microbial communities—bacteria, fungi, and viruses—that silently shape our health. While modern architecture often strives for sterile efficiency, this research dares to embrace the invisible life that thrives among us.

“We often design buildings without considering how they affect microbial presence,” Villoria shared. “But when we begin to understand that architecture can host, foster, or disrupt microbial ecosystems, we unlock the potential to design for health—not just aesthetics or function.”

Villoria partnered with a powerhouse of collaborators: Dr. Vina Argayosa of UP Diliman’s Natural Sciences Research Institute, Angelo Rosalinas of Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited – Philippines Branch, Daniel Nichol Valerio of De La Salle University, Christian Lyle La Madrid of LLUID, and Michael Xavier Ticzon of Fundamental Design Experts. Together, they sought to create a conceptual framework that could convert microbial data into usable architectural design tools—an unprecedented attempt in Philippine research.

Their work centers on a deceptively simple question: how do ventilation, window size, and human occupancy affect microbial presence in indoor spaces? Using the National Building Code of the Philippines—specifically, its standards for minimum habitable rooms—the team conducted three experiments in Metro Manila using passive air sampling. Bacteria and fungi were collected and analyzed across different conditions, revealing how even slight variations in window size or foot traffic significantly influenced indoor microbial populations.

A photo of Petri dishes from the study vividly captures the invisible drama unfolding in our built environments—tiny colonies of microbes blooming in response to air, architecture, and movement. “It’s like we’re seeing everyday spaces through a microscopic lens,” said Dr. Argayosa. “This is the kind of shift in thinking that urbanized societies urgently need.”

But this isn’t just about the Philippines. The framework has global relevance, adaptable to any country’s building codes and climate conditions. Tropical nations, for example, deal with high humidity and heat, which directly affect microbial growth. “Each country has its own standards and environmental challenges,” Villoria explained. “That’s why our goal is to offer a framework others can localize and refine—whether they’re in Europe, Africa, or Asia.”

The proposed model doesn’t stop at small rooms. The team encourages future researchers to expand this framework to include different types of spaces—from schools and offices to entire urban zones. “We need to start small, identify patterns, and scale up,” Villoria emphasized. “Eventually, this data could inform how we zone cities or design high-occupancy structures.”

And what’s the endgame? A world where design doesn’t just shelter us—but heals us. Imagine cities that breathe with us, buildings that support microbial diversity beneficial to human health, and urban planning that factors in not just air flow, but microbial ecology. As Dr. Argayosa poignantly noted, “We don’t often realize it, but we are surrounded by microbes. They live in us, on us, and all around us. Awareness is the first step—but what we do with that awareness is what could change everything.”

The team’s study, titled “Integrating building code to microbial count studies in urban built spaces with ventilation and human presence: a model,” is now published in Frontiers in Built Environment—a journal dedicated to sustainable methodologies in architectural design and infrastructure. It marks the beginning of a new era in design thinking: one where walls talk—and microbes answer.

In a world still reeling from pandemics and urban pollution, this Filipino-led initiative signals hope. It’s not just about what we build anymore—it’s about how what we build interacts with the unseen worlds within.

Turning Trash Into Triumph: The Revolutionary Drive of Project 1M School Chair – Plastik? Huli Ka!

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a country where over 2.7 million tons of plastic waste are generated each year, the environmental consequences of single-use plastics have become too enormous to ignore. From junk food wrappers to detergent sachets and plastic pouches, these low-value plastics flood our streets, seas, and skies—often dumped or burned in remote areas with little or no waste infrastructure. The result is a crisis that endangers not just ecosystems, but also public health and the well-being of future generations. But what if these waste materials, often seen as useless and destructive, could be transformed into instruments of learning, hope, and national progress?

Project 1M School Chair: Plastik? Huli Ka! is a bold, nationwide campaign that seeks to do exactly that. Initiated by the Green Party of the Philippines and Bayanihan Para Sa Kalikasan Movement, Inc., this project aims to collect and recycle 12 million kilograms of single-use plastic waste by the year 2027. But instead of letting these materials clog our landfills or fuel toxic fires, they will be reborn as durable, safe, and ergonomic school chairs and desks for public schools in the Philippines that continue to suffer from an alarming shortage of basic classroom furniture.

With its catchy yet powerful campaign tagline, “Plastik? Huli Ka!”, the initiative calls out the plastic crisis with a sense of urgency, accountability, and collective action. It transforms what is often viewed as a curse into a catalyst for environmental innovation and educational upliftment. The phrase itself is a play on common Filipino expressions, giving it a relatable and commanding tone that sparks attention and action.

The project carries a powerful vision: to divert millions of kilos of harmful plastic waste from being burned or dumped, and instead use them to equip thousands of classrooms with the furniture they need. It’s an initiative rooted in four main objectives—environmental recovery, educational support, community mobilization, and the promotion of a circular economy. By collecting difficult-to-recycle plastics such as wrappers and sachets, the program not only cleans communities but also reduces the health hazards caused by plastic burning. These plastics are then processed through partnerships with green manufacturers into composite materials that are turned into school furniture. Each chair produced isn’t just a seat—it’s a symbol of what can happen when sustainability meets innovation.

Project 1M also puts strong emphasis on involving the people. From students and teachers to households, barangays, and youth groups, the campaign mobilizes local communities to become champions of change. Through localized Plastic Recovery Points (PRPs) set up in schools, markets, churches, and barangay centers, the initiative encourages residents to bring in their waste in exchange for incentives like eco-points, school rewards, or community recognition. It turns plastic recovery into a shared civic duty—and, even more powerfully, a source of pride.

Once collected and sorted, the plastics are brought to partner recycling firms that specialize in turning flexible plastics into high-quality, weather-resistant materials. These are then crafted into school furniture designed for safety, durability, and child-friendly ergonomics. From there, the furniture is delivered through “eco-caravans,” in partnership with local government units and the Department of Education (DepEd), directly to public schools in need. But the campaign doesn’t stop at delivery. Alongside each chair is a lesson—community workshops are conducted to teach the public about the life cycle of plastics, the dangers of improper disposal, and the power of sustainable living.

This ambitious campaign is set to unfold over four years, with each year marking a milestone in its progressive expansion. In 2024, the project begins with pilot collection sites and support for 100 schools. By 2025, it aims to expand to 20 provinces, igniting massive public awareness campaigns and partnerships. The following year, the program will scale to nationwide coverage, engaging media and influencers to amplify the call to action. In its final stretch by 2027, the initiative aims to surge forward with its biggest collection efforts and publish a national impact report to showcase the results and lessons learned.

By the end of its journey, Project 1M envisions the collection and recycling of at least 12 million kilograms of single-use plastic, the production and distribution of more than 50,000 school chairs, the establishment of over 1,000 active Plastic Recovery Points, and the engagement of at least one million Filipinos in direct participation. These numbers represent more than statistics—they signify a nation waking up to the reality that even the most neglected waste has the power to uplift lives.

To ensure that the campaign’s impact endures beyond 2027, the project includes comprehensive sustainability measures. Local governments will be encouraged to pass ordinances institutionalizing Plastic Recovery Points in every barangay. Community plastic cooperatives will be formed, connecting waste-pickers and recyclers to long-term sources of livelihood. The initiative will also be integrated into existing programs like DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela and LGU climate action plans, ensuring continued relevance and replication. Advocacy for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws and corporate accountability will likewise push for systemic change in how plastics are produced, consumed, and disposed of.

Project 1M’s strength lies in its partnerships. It invites collaboration from across sectors: government agencies such as DepEd, DENR, DILG, and proactive LGUs; private companies with CSR programs and logistics capacities; schools, youth organizations, and barangay councils; as well as storytellers, influencers, and media outlets that can carry the message far and wide.

In essence, Project 1M School Chair: Plastik? Huli Ka! is more than an environmental effort. It is a campaign of hope, a model for inclusive sustainability, and a movement that proves we can turn trash into triumph. Every plastic wrapper collected is a step toward cleaner communities. Every chair produced is a seat offered to a child who deserves to learn. And every citizen who takes part becomes a hero in a shared national journey—where we reclaim our waste, redefine its value, and rebuild our future, one school chair at a time.
