That catastrophic event leveled churches, reduced homes to rubble, and reshaped Manila's landscape. Historians and scientists agree: the Marikina Valley Fault—the very fault line responsible—is a sleeping giant, one that stirs violently every 400 years.

We are now just 20 years shy of that cycle’s return.

The Calm Before the Quake

Every day, we walk atop a ticking time bomb. The ground feels stable beneath our feet, yet geologists warn that it's only a matter of time before the next seismic upheaval hits. The signs are all around us—more frequent tremors, shifting tectonic plates, and aging infrastructure ill-equipped to withstand another massive blow.

And if the earthquake doesn’t get us, the floods might. Or the fires. Or the storm surges intensified by climate change. Our nation, nestled in the Pacific Ring of Fire and battered by an average of 20 typhoons a year, is no stranger to nature’s wrath.

The question is: Are we prepared?
