From Trash to Treasure: The Battle for Manila Bay's Future

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In the shadow of Manila's skyline, an army of environmental warriors wages a weekly war against an invasion that threatens our oceans

The sun has barely crested the horizon as they arrive—hundreds of dedicated soldiers in a battle most people never see. Armed with nothing but gloves, trash bags, and unwavering determination, they form a human chain along the shoreline where concrete meets sea. Their mission: to reclaim Manila Bay from the clutches of human carelessness, one piece of debris at a time.

The Silent Crisis at Our Shores

Manila Bay—once celebrated for its spectacular sunsets—has long suffered under the weight of urbanization and consumerism. But beneath the surface of this environmental tragedy, a powerful movement is rising.

"We don't just see trash when we come here," says Maria Santos, an SM employee who has participated in all four of April's weekly cleanups. "We see lost potential, threatened marine life, and a future that deserves better than what we've given it."

Throughout April 2025, an impressive force of 272 volunteers from SM By the Bay converged on these troubled waters week after week. Their collective impact? A staggering 1,147 kilograms of trash removed from the ecosystem—enough to fill a small apartment.

More Than Just Numbers: The Human Element

The statistics tell only part of the story. Behind each kilogram of collected waste lies a personal commitment to change.

For Jaime Cruz, a customer relations officer at SM Supermalls, the weekly ritual has transformed his relationship with consumption entirely. "After you've pulled your hundredth plastic straw from the sand, you never look at single-use items the same way again," he confesses, wiping sweat from his brow. "These cleanups don't just change the shoreline—they change us."

The diverse coalition of participants speaks volumes about the initiative's broad appeal. Executives work shoulder-to-shoulder with janitorial staff. Veteran environmentalists guide first-time volunteers. Together, they form an unlikely but effective environmental task force that transcends traditional workplace hierarchies.

The Ripple Effect: Beyond Cleaner Shores

What happens at Manila Bay doesn't stay at Manila Bay. The ripples of this initiative extend far beyond cleaner shores.

Environmental psychologists have long documented the "behavioral contagion" that follows participation in restoration activities. In simple terms: those who clean up beaches today become ambassadors for waste reduction tomorrow. They influence family members, coworkers, and communities with their new perspective.

"I've started bringing my own containers everywhere," explains volunteer Rosanna Mendoza. "My children now correct their teachers about proper waste disposal. This is how real change happens—it spreads from person to person until it becomes the new normal."

A Synchronized National Effort

While the Manila Bay efforts captured headlines, similar scenes played out across the Philippine archipelago. The SM Cares initiative spans fourteen malls nationwide, creating synchronized impact in coastal communities from Dagupan to Davao.

Each location faces unique challenges. In Iloilo, volunteers battle agricultural runoff. In Davao, they confront industrial waste. Yet the collective message remains consistent: our oceans connect us all, and their protection requires coordinated action.

Answering a Global Call

The weekly cleanups align perfectly with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water. As plastic production continues to accelerate globally—with an estimated 11 million metric tons entering oceans annually—initiatives like SM's represent critical local responses to an overwhelming global challenge.

Marine biologist Dr. Elena Reyes, who provides educational briefings to volunteers, emphasizes the scientific significance of these efforts: "Every piece of plastic removed represents potential salvation for marine creatures. A single plastic bag can kill multiple sea turtles over its lifecycle in the water. These volunteers aren't just cleaning—they're saving lives."

The Road Ahead: From Cleanup to Prevention

While the April achievements deserve celebration, SM Cares recognizes that cleanup efforts alone cannot solve the marine debris crisis. The true solution lies upstream—in reducing waste production and improving management systems before trash reaches waterways.

To this end, the company has integrated its coastal restoration work with broader sustainability initiatives, including plastic reduction policies across its mall operations and consumer education campaigns.

"We're fighting this battle from both ends," explains an SM Cares spokesperson. "We clean up what's already there while working to ensure less waste enters the system in the first place. This comprehensive approach is the only way forward."

Join the Movement

The story continues on June 7, 2025, when SM Cares will host special World Oceans Day cleanups across all participating locations. The public invitation stands open to anyone willing to transform concern into action.

Participating malls include SM By the Bay, SM City Manila, SM City San Lazaro, SM City Sta. Mesa, SM City Rosario, SM City Batangas, SM City Lipa, SM City Bacolod, SM City Iloilo, SM City Davao, SM City CDO Downtown, SM City Tanza, SM City Lucena, and SM Center Dagupan.

As volunteer coordinator Antonio Reyes puts it: "We don't need a few people doing zero waste perfectly—we need millions doing it imperfectly. Your first step might be joining us for just one morning. But that morning could change everything."

For Manila Bay and coastlines everywhere, the future hangs in the balance—one volunteer, one cleanup, one kilogram of trash at a time.

SM Prime: Building a Fortress Against Disaster in an Age of Uncertainty

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The ground still trembles in Myanmar and Thailand—ghostly aftershocks from devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquakes that struck months ago. As scenes of destruction fade from international headlines, a chilling question reverberates across Southeast Asia: Who will survive "The Big One"?

In the Philippines—a nation where natural disasters aren't mere possibilities but certainties—one corporate giant stands as both shield and beacon. SM Prime Holdings, Inc., Southeast Asia's leading integrated property developer, isn't just preparing for catastrophe; it's redefining what resilience means in our climate-ravaged century.

The Vulnerable Edge

The Philippines sits precariously on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic violence is a birthright. Add increasingly savage typhoons, unpredictable floods, and rising seas—the cocktail of climate change and geographic fate has created what disaster experts consider one of Earth's most vulnerable nations.

Against this backdrop of existential threat, SM Prime's approach transcends conventional corporate sustainability. Their philosophy is stark and uncompromising: survival demands more than emergency response; it requires institutional transformation.

Education: The First Line of Defense

"When disaster strikes, knowledge saves lives before rescuers arrive," says Hans Sy, SM Prime Executive Committee Chairman, whose vision has made resilience the cornerstone of the company's identity. "Resilience is a way of life. It is a commitment to ensure that we act on our responsibility to care for others so that no one is left behind."

This commitment materializes in SM Cares' annual Emergency Preparedness Forum—a life-saving initiative targeting the most vulnerable populations. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) receive specialized training acknowledging their unique challenges during disasters: mobility limitations, health complications, and heightened anxiety during emergencies.

In the towering residential developments of SM Development Corporation (SMDC), where thousands of families have made their homes, the "Ready to Rescue" program transforms ordinary residents into first responders. From fire evacuation to water rescue techniques, these civilian guardians will be the first line of defense when chaos erupts.

"Minutes matter when disaster strikes," explains a program director. "Professional emergency teams may take precious time to reach high-rise developments. Our residents must be prepared to save themselves—and each other."

Global Guardians: The ARISE Alliance

SM Prime's influence extends far beyond Philippine shores through its leadership in ARISE-Philippines (Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies). Through strategic partnerships with ARISE Japan and India—two of the alliance's most powerful members—the company has created a transnational knowledge exchange on cutting-edge disaster technology.

These relationships aren't merely symbolic. They represent a revolutionary approach to disaster preparedness: the fusion of Japanese engineering precision, Indian scale-management expertise, and Philippine frontline disaster experience. Together, they're creating a resilience blueprint that could save millions across the Asia-Pacific region.

Climate Crisis: Understanding the Enemy

In the climate battle, knowledge truly is power. At a recent Climate Fresk Workshop hosted at SMX Convention Center Aura, SM Prime gathered an elite coalition of corporate and non-profit sustainability champions for an unprecedented collaborative experience.

Based on authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, the workshop stripped away technical jargon to reveal the brutal mechanics of our warming world. Participants navigated the complex web connecting human activity, biodiversity collapse, and climate devastation.

"It invited everyone—not just one sector—to collaborate and participate in fields of knowledge that are seemingly not connected at all," reflected Joaquin Campos from World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines. "The immediate causes and effects of market actions are clear, but the bigger picture is clear when we collaborate with one another."

Charmaine Vitan of the Oscar M. Lopez Center praised the workshop's accessibility: "It was an exciting and valuable experience for us, given our advocacy for climate change resilience. The workshop succeeded in making it more accessible and relatable, particularly for individuals who are already aware of its effects on their respective industries."

The ESG+R Revolution

While many corporations have embraced Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, SM Prime has pioneered a revolutionary extension: ESG+R, where Resilience becomes the fourth pillar of sustainable development.

This isn't theoretical posturing—it's embedded in every nail, beam, and foundation of SM Prime's vast portfolio. Infrastructure across their developments incorporates advanced resilience engineering: flood-resistant malls with water catchment systems, earthquake-resistant superstructures, and emergency power capabilities that can sustain operations when public systems fail.

The Fortress Builders

As climate catastrophes multiply and intensify worldwide, SM Prime's approach offers a profound lesson: resilience isn't merely about surviving disaster—it's about creating systems and societies that can absorb shock, adapt, and emerge stronger.

The company doesn't just build properties; it builds fortresses against an uncertain future. From mall complexes that double as emergency shelters to residential developments designed to withstand seismic assaults, SM Prime's portfolio represents perhaps the largest private investment in disaster resilience in Southeast Asia.

As Hans Sy addressed members of ARISE Philippines at their first annual general meeting of 2025, his message carried both warning and hope: disasters will come with greater frequency and ferocity, but together, through preparation, knowledge sharing, and unwavering commitment to resilience, communities can weather the storms of our changing world.

In the race against climate catastrophe, SM Prime isn't just participating—it's leading the way, building not just for commerce but for survival in an age where the earth itself has become unpredictable. Their message is clear: in the face of "The Big One," whether earthquake, super-typhoon, or flooding, preparation isn't just prudent—it's the difference between devastation and resilience.

Beyond Earth Day: How SM Supermalls is Revolutionizing Sustainability 365 Days a Year

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In the battle against climate change, the heroes aren't always who you'd expect. As shoppers stroll through bright corridors hunting for deals, something revolutionary is happening above their heads, beneath their feet, and in the very air they breathe. SM Supermalls has quietly transformed from commercial giant to environmental champion, proving that sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's the foundation of their business model.

"Most people see Earth Day as a single moment to plant a tree or clean a beach," reflects Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment. "But what happens on day two? On day three? That's where real change happens."

And real change is exactly what SM is delivering, through seven groundbreaking initiatives that are reshaping what it means to be a responsible corporate citizen in the Philippines.

The Silent Revolution Happening Above Your Head

As the harsh midday sun beats down outside, something remarkable is happening on SM's vast rooftops. 47 malls and properties across the country have been transformed into clean energy generators, with sprawling solar installations capturing sunlight and converting it to power.

In 2024 alone, these silent sentinels produced 27.6 GWh of clean energy—enough to offset the carbon emissions of over 4,100 cars. It's the equivalent of planting nearly half a million trees and letting them grow for a decade.

At SM City Tanza, 2,286 solar panels stretch across the rooftop like a modern art installation, generating 1,257.30 kW at peak capacity. This isn't just environmental window dressing—it's a massive investment in our collective future, with SM targeting an ambitious 100MWp rooftop solar capacity by 2027.

Driving Change, One Charge at a Time

The future of transportation isn't just coming—it's already plugged in at SM.

"Three years ago, seeing an electric vehicle was a rare event," says Silerio. "Today, they're becoming commonplace, but many potential owners worry about where they'll charge. We decided to remove that barrier entirely."

SM's network of 123 EV charging stations across 69 malls has already pumped 14,500 kWh of clean electricity into vehicles, completely free of charge. With 50 more chargers planned in 2025, SM is silently building the infrastructure for a transportation revolution.

For perspective, every 1,000 kWh of clean charging prevents approximately 700 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering our atmosphere. SM isn't just accommodating the future—they're accelerating it.

Nature's Light, Nature's Way

Walk into an SM mall on a sunny day, and you might notice something different. The light feels... natural. That's because it is.

Strategic Sky Gardens and skylights flood interior spaces with sunshine, dramatically reducing electricity needs during daylight hours. Where artificial lighting is necessary, energy-efficient LED systems illuminate the way. Even the escalators have evolved—equipped with motion sensors that allow them to rest when not in use.

These design choices aren't just aesthetic—they represent a fundamental shift in how commercial spaces interact with the environment. SM also contributes a staggering 110 MW of capacity to the Department of Energy's Interruptible Load Program, helping prevent brownouts during peak demand.

The RDC Revolution: Rethinking Waste From Within

In perhaps its boldest move yet, SM launched the #SMWasteFreeFuture initiative in 2023, mandating proper waste segregation for every tenant through innovative RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bin systems.

"We realized that meaningful change had to start with us," Silerio explains. "Before asking the public to segregate waste, we needed to get our own house in order."

The initiative began with SM employees themselves, fostering a culture where sustainability isn't just policy—it's practice. Today, every food court, retail space, and back office participates in this waste revolution, proving that even the largest organizations can pivot toward sustainability when the commitment is genuine.

Turning Trash to Treasure—Literally

Every first Friday and Saturday of the month, SM malls transform into recycling marketplaces where waste becomes wealth. The longstanding Trash-to-Cash program allows visitors to exchange paper, plastic, metal, and even broken appliances for money—creating a powerful incentive for responsible disposal.

The impact? Over 1 million kilograms of recyclables diverted from landfills annually. That's the weight of nearly 200 adult elephants in waste that now enters the circular economy instead of choking landfills or waterways.

In one particularly moving case, a group of students used the program to fund their school project by collecting recyclables from their neighborhood—turning environmental stewardship into educational opportunity.

The Specialized Collection Points Making Big Impacts

Beyond general recycling, SM has created targeted solutions for our most problematic waste streams. 15 participating malls now feature dedicated plastic collection points, while e-waste bins at Cyberzone areas nationwide provide safe disposal options for electronic devices.

Through partnerships with Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT, these specialized collection programs have rescued 63,874 kg of plastics and over 11,000 kg of e-waste from improper disposal.

To visualize this impact: the plastic collected equals the weight of about 5 million plastic bottles, while the e-waste diverted represents roughly 11,000 old smartphones that won't leach toxic chemicals into groundwater.

From Shopping Centers to Coastal Guardians

Perhaps most surprising is SM's transformation into a coastal protection powerhouse. In 2024 alone, more than 27,000 volunteers across 15 SM malls removed a staggering 157,000 kg of trash from the Philippines' precious coastlines and waterways.

That's the equivalent of removing 35 adult elephants worth of debris—plastic bags that won't choke marine life, fishing nets that won't entangle coral reefs, and microplastics that won't make their way into our food chain.

"The ocean connects all of us," says Silerio. "When our mall employees in Bataan stand knee-deep in water collecting trash, they're not just cleaning a beach—they're protecting a global resource."

The 365-Day Commitment

As Earth Day 2025 approaches, SM Supermalls stands as proof that corporate environmental responsibility doesn't need to be confined to symbolic gestures or single-day events.

From the solar panels quietly generating clean energy above shoppers' heads to the electric vehicles silently charging in the parking lots; from the natural light streaming through skylights to the properly segregated waste in every bin—SM has woven sustainability into its very DNA.

The message is clear: Earth Day isn't April 22nd. It's every single day of the year.

And for the millions who walk through SM's doors annually, that message isn't delivered through lectures or slogans—it's experienced, participated in, and gradually normalized until these extraordinary efforts become our ordinary expectations.

That might be SM's most important achievement of all.
