Ilocos Region to Host Grand Triad of National Youth Events This May 2025: A Showcase of Excellence, Culture, and Empowerment

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

A powerful convergence of intellect, creativity, and athletic prowess will soon unfold in the historic lands of Ilocandia as the Department of Education (DepEd) brings not just one, but three monumental national youth events to the Ilocos Region this May 2025. In a move that echoes both strategic symbolism and a deep commitment to regional inclusivity, the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), National Festival of Talents (NFOT), and the 65th Palarong Pambansa will take place in the home province of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

This grand spectacle, gathering thousands of the nation’s finest young minds, creative spirits, and sports champions, promises to be one of the most significant educational and cultural undertakings of the year.

“Through Bagong Pilipinas, we will meet our greatest obligation to our youth—to mold them into critical thinkers, problem solvers, and brave visionaries for their country,” declared President Marcos, emphasizing a future-forward vision where Filipino youth become architects of national progress.

A Fusion of Brilliance: NSPC and NFOT Illuminate Ilocos Sur

From May 19 to 23, 2025, Ilocos Sur will transform into a dynamic center for journalistic and artistic excellence as it hosts both the NSPC and NFOT, drawing over 5,500 student delegates, coaches, and education officials.

With the resonant theme: “Empowering Filipino Youth: Unleashing Potentials in Journalism and Creative Industries in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,” this year’s events aim to prepare the nation’s future communicators and creators for the AI-driven age.

NSPC 2025 brings together over 3,300 campus journalists competing in traditional and modern journalism categories including news writing, photojournalism, radio broadcasting, online publishing, and a compelling new addition—Mobile Journalism, an exhibition event that puts storytelling in the hands of students with smartphones.

Complementing the competitions are transformative Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and AI in Journalism sessions, led by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) and Assistant Professor Vengie M. Ravelo of Western Philippine University, offering delegates a deeper understanding of ethical reporting in an AI-dominated landscape.

Meanwhile, the NFOT 2025 welcomes around 2,200 student talents across diverse disciplines, from performing arts and culinary showcases to digital and industrial design, aligned with the K to 12 curriculum and the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act (RA 11904).

Competitions will span TLE, Music and Arts, STEM, Inclusive Education, and even Religious and Cultural Education—capturing the vast spectrum of Filipino ingenuity. This year introduces new categories involving productivity tools and technical assembly, while teachers are offered parallel development sessions, ensuring holistic growth for both learners and mentors.

Palarong Pambansa 2025: United in Sports, Bound by Heritage

Just as the lights dim on the NSPC and NFOT, they rise again in neighboring Ilocos Norte from May 24 to 31, where the 65th Palarong Pambansa—a time-honored tradition in Philippine school sports—will unite over 15,000 athletes, coaches, and officials under the theme “Nagkakaisang Kapuluan.”

The event is more than a sports meet—it’s a celebration of national unity, featuring 24 regular sports like basketball, swimming, taekwondo, and volleyball, along with demonstration sports such as weightlifting and futsal for girls, and kickboxing as an exhibition event.

A remarkable highlight is the Special Games category, celebrating para-athletes through events like para-athletics, bocce, para-swimming, and goalball, affirming DepEd’s unwavering support for inclusivity and accessibility in youth sports.

With a staggering 1,777 medals to be awarded, the Palaro is not just about competition—it's about celebrating talent, determination, and unity.

Adding cultural vibrance is the return of “Palaro ng Lahi”, where students compete in traditional Filipino games, reminding us all of our shared heritage amidst the forward march of modernity.

“These are platforms that empower our youth and help prepare them for a rapidly changing world,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara. “Bringing these national gatherings to Ilocandia reflects our belief in regional inclusivity and shows how communities like Ilocos are key partners in building a future-ready education system.”

A Nation’s Vision Through Its Youth

The convergence of these three powerful events—each representing the apex of youth excellence in communication, creativity, and competition—is more than just a logistical marvel. It’s a symbolic gesture of this administration’s commitment to regional empowerment, cultural preservation, and 21st-century readiness.

For the youth of Ilocos and the entire Philippines, May 2025 will not be just a month on the calendar. It will be remembered as a season of empowerment, where voices were amplified, talents were celebrated, and champions were made—not only in sports fields, performance stages, or newsrooms, but in the hearts of every young Filipino driven by purpose and pride.

Ilocos Region, prepare for a historic May—because the future is coming home.
