United for Strength: UN Laureate Glenn Banaguas Leads Climate Smart and Disaster Resilient ASEAN for Myanmar and Thailand

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

When catastrophe strikes, the true strength of a region is tested—not by its borders, but by its unity. In the wake of a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that left Myanmar and Thailand reeling, one initiative is proving that resilience is not just about survival, but about rising stronger together.

Leading this transformative response is UN Sasakawa Laureate Glenn Banaguas, an internationally celebrated science diplomat and advocate for resilience and sustainability. As Chairman of the US-ASEAN Science and Technology Fellows and Asian Science Diplomats, Banaguas is spearheading the "Climate Smart and Disaster Resilient ASEAN" initiative—a groundbreaking, science-driven, and entirely free program designed to empower communities, rebuild critical infrastructure, and fortify the future of the affected nations.

A Call to Action: Beyond Sympathy, Toward Science and Strength

"Myanmar’s grief, Thailand’s hardship… these are not distant tragedies; they are wounds we all bear," Banaguas declared. "We breathe the same air, stand beneath the same skies, and are bound by the same fate. Today, we do not stand as separate nations, but as one people—united not in sorrow, but in unwavering resolve. We stand together, and we act."

These words encapsulate the core philosophy of Banaguas' mission: that true recovery requires more than humanitarian aid; it demands a scientific, collaborative, and forward-thinking approach. Through this initiative, he is ensuring that Myanmar and Thailand not only heal from the present crisis but are equipped to face future challenges with greater resilience.

Science Diplomacy: Uniting Knowledge, Policy, and Community

Disaster recovery is often approached through short-term relief efforts, but Banaguas understands that lasting stability comes from a marriage of science and policy. With a coalition of Asian Science Diplomats and US-ASEAN Science and Technology Fellows, he is leveraging science diplomacy to bridge the gap between researchers, policymakers, and local communities. This approach ensures that recovery efforts are data-driven, culturally inclusive, and strategically aligned with the long-term sustainability goals of the region.

The initiative incorporates:

Scientific risk assessments to map vulnerabilities and prioritize interventions.

Resilience-building strategies that blend modern science with traditional ecological knowledge.

Policy recommendations that integrate disaster risk reduction into national frameworks.

Knowledge-sharing platforms that empower communities with free access to actionable solutions.

More Than Relief—A Blueprint for Sustainability

What sets the "Climate Smart and Disaster Resilient ASEAN" initiative apart is its commitment to long-term empowerment. While many disaster response programs focus on immediate relief, Banaguas and his team are equipping communities with tools and knowledge to rebuild stronger, ensuring they are better prepared for future disasters. By integrating scientific innovation with indigenous wisdom, the initiative transforms affected areas into models of sustainability and disaster preparedness.

Banaguas, known as the "Father of Asian Science Diplomacy" and "Guru of Resiliency and Sustainability," remains steadfast in his mission to ensure that Myanmar and Thailand do not bear their burdens alone. His leadership is a testament to a deeper philosophy—that unity, not borders, defines the strength of a nation in times of crisis.

ASEAN: A Family United in Resilience

"ASEAN was never just a collection of nations. It is a family, bound not by lines drawn on maps, but by the unbreakable ties of solidarity, compassion, and shared destiny," Banaguas affirmed. "Today, as Myanmar mourns and Thailand endures, we must remember: the anguish of one reverberates through us all, and the resilience of one strengthens the entire region. In unity, we do not merely endure, we rise."

As Myanmar and Thailand embark on their journey of recovery, Banaguas’ leadership and the resilience initiatives are setting a new standard for science-led disaster response. With free access to expertise, collaboration, and innovation, this mission is not just about rebuilding—it is about redefining how ASEAN faces adversity.

One truth stands firm: “We do not stand alone, and we do not falter. We rise together.”

Wildlife Trafficking Kingpin Arrested in Nigeria: A Landmark Blow Against Transnational Crime

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a historic victory against international wildlife trafficking, Nigerian authorities, with intelligence provided by the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), have arrested a high-ranking Chinese wildlife trafficker in Lagos. This crucial development marks a major disruption to the organized criminal networks responsible for the illegal trade of pangolin scales and other endangered wildlife products between Africa and Asia.

A Seizure That Changed Everything

The arrest stems from an unprecedented wildlife contraband bust in Ogun, Nigeria, in August 2024. Acting on WJC intelligence, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) raided a warehouse, seizing 31 bags of pangolin scales on August 8. A follow-up operation two days later uncovered a staggering 148 additional bags, bringing the total haul to an unprecedented 7.2 tonnes—the largest-ever WJC-supported seizure.

Investigations soon pointed to a powerful Chinese trafficker suspected of being the mastermind behind the illegal stockpile. For six months, Nigerian authorities meticulously tracked him down. On February 19, 2025, the suspect was finally apprehended in Lagos, dealing a devastating blow to one of the world's most elusive wildlife trafficking syndicates.

Breaking New Ground in the Fight Against Wildlife Crime

This milestone arrest is significant for multiple reasons:

It marks the first time a Chinese wildlife trafficking suspect has been arrested in Nigeria due to a WJC-backed investigation.

It is the second high-profile kingpin taken down in Nigeria through WJC collaboration.

It sends a powerful message that illegal wildlife trade will no longer be conducted with impunity.

Since July 2021, the WJC has worked closely with the Nigeria Customs Service, providing intelligence analysis, investigative support, and evidentiary assistance. This ongoing collaboration has yielded impressive results:

17 joint operations executed

37 arrests made

21.5 tonnes of pangolin scales and over one tonne of ivory seized

12 successful convictions, including a Vietnamese trafficking kingpin and his associates

Furthermore, WJC-supported efforts have led to the disruption of transnational trafficking routes, with no major African pangolin scale seizures reported at any global seaports in over three years—a sign that these networks are being effectively dismantled.

Crippling the Illegal Wildlife Trade at Its Core

The economic impact of this operation is substantial. The 7.2-tonne pangolin scale seizure alone was valued at over USD 1.4 million in Asian black markets, significantly undercutting the traffickers’ financial operations. By targeting the upper echelons of wildlife crime syndicates, authorities are striking at the very heart of an illicit industry worth billions globally.

"This arrest represents a gold standard in wildlife crime investigations," said Olivia Swaak-Goldman, Executive Director of the WJC. "The swift action taken by NCS, guided by our intelligence, highlights the power of proactive law enforcement in targeting top-tier traffickers. By dismantling these networks from the top down, we are making a tangible impact in the fight against extinction."

A Call to Action: Strengthening the Global Fight

Nigeria’s aggressive stance on wildlife crime signals a broader shift in the global fight against illegal trafficking. As pressure mounts on criminal networks, the risks for traffickers continue to rise. This latest arrest reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to tackling transnational crime and sets a precedent for other nations battling the illegal wildlife trade.

The Wildlife Justice Commission remains steadfast in its mission—to collect evidence, support law enforcement, and drive accountability. Through strategic operations, undercover investigations, and policy advocacy, the WJC is leading the charge to dismantle wildlife trafficking networks and protect endangered species from exploitation.

The battle is far from over, but with every trafficker brought to justice, the scales tip further in favor of conservation and justice.

Toxic Beauty: The Hidden Danger Lurking in Thailand-Made Facial Creams

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a shocking revelation that underscores the ongoing fight against toxic beauty products, the toxics watchdog group EcoWaste Coalition has uncovered yet another skincare product laced with hazardous mercury. This latest discovery reaffirms the urgent need for stricter enforcement of cosmetics regulations to protect consumers from unseen dangers.

A Silent Poison in a Beauty Jar

EcoWaste Coalition, in its relentless advocacy for public health and environmental safety, recently purchased a red Dr. Wuttisak skincare set from an online seller for a mere P120. But what seemed like an innocent beauty purchase turned out to be a potential health hazard. Upon screening the five-piece skincare set with an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) device, the results were alarming: while the soap, toner, and two of the three cream jars tested negative, the third jar contained an astonishing 10,610 parts per million (ppm) of mercury.

To put this into perspective, mercury is not a permitted ingredient in cosmetics under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive. The presence of such a high concentration in a facial cream is not only illegal but also poses severe health risks to unsuspecting consumers.

A Recurring Threat

This is not the first time Dr. Wuttisak products have come under scrutiny. Previous tests on the blue and green variants of this Thai skincare brand also revealed mercury contamination, raising red flags about the widespread availability of these toxic products in the market. Despite international regulations such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury—which set a global phase-out deadline for mercury-added cosmetics—these hazardous products continue to slip through regulatory cracks, jeopardizing public safety.

The Deadly Effects of Mercury

Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal with no known safe level of exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that inorganic mercury found in skin-lightening products can cause devastating health effects, including:

Kidney damage

Skin rashes, discoloration, and scarring

Weakened skin resistance to bacterial and fungal infections

Anxiety, depression, and psychosis

Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage)

For pregnant women, the risks are even more dire. Mercury can accumulate in the body and be transferred to developing fetuses, leading to irreversible neurodevelopmental issues in children.

Mercury’s Reach Beyond the Skin

The toxic effects of mercury are not confined to the users alone. The WHO emphasizes that mercury from creams and soaps washes into wastewater systems, contaminating rivers and oceans. Once in the environment, it transforms into methylmercury—a highly toxic form that accumulates in fish and seafood, ultimately making its way into the human food chain.

Furthermore, non-users, including babies and family members, are at risk of exposure. Mercury vapors from tainted cosmetics can be inhaled, absorbed through skin contact, or transferred via contaminated bedding and clothing. In essence, using mercury-laden skin-lightening products doesn’t just endanger the user—it endangers entire households and ecosystems.

A Call for Action: Embrace Natural Beauty

In light of these alarming findings, EcoWaste Coalition has once again issued a stern warning against the use of mercury-laden beauty products. The group calls on Filipinos to reject dangerous chemical whiteners and embrace their natural skin tone, advocating the message: “Beauty has no skin tone. All colors are beautiful.”

Consumers must exercise vigilance when purchasing skincare products, especially those marketed for skin whitening. If a product lacks proper labeling, boasts instant whitening effects, or is suspiciously cheap, it may contain toxic ingredients. Regulatory agencies must intensify their monitoring efforts, while online marketplaces must implement stricter policies to prevent the sale of hazardous cosmetics.

Final Thought: Beauty at What Cost?

The pursuit of fair skin should never come at the expense of health and safety. Let this serve as a wake-up call to consumers, regulators, and the beauty industry alike: toxic beauty has no place in our society. The real glow comes from confidence, self-acceptance, and making informed choices that prioritize well-being over fleeting aesthetic trends.
