Carlo Aquino & Takehiro Hira’s Crosspoint: The Thrilling Netflix Movie You Can’t Afford to Miss!

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The highly anticipated action thriller "Crosspoint" is set to premiere on Netflix Philippines on March 13, 2025, following its successful theatrical release in the country. This compelling collaboration between the Philippines and Japan showcases the talents of award-winning Filipino actor Carlo Aquino and Emmy-nominated Japanese actor Takehiro Hira.

A Story of Survival and Destiny

"Crosspoint" delves into the lives of two men from disparate backgrounds, united by their struggles and a shared quest for redemption. Manuel Hidalgo, portrayed by Carlo Aquino, is a once-celebrated Filipino actor now navigating the shadows of Tokyo as an undocumented performer in Filipino pubs. His path intersects with Shigeru Yamaguchi, played by Takehiro Hira, a former construction manager burdened by debt and past regrets. Their chance to alter their fates emerges when they recognize a fugitive on the news, leading them into a perilous chase that tests their morals and resilience.

Director’s Vision: Inspired by Real-Life Struggles

Filmmaker Donie Ordiales, a Filipino director based in Japan, drew inspiration from real individuals and events for "Crosspoint." The characters of Manuel and Shigeru were inspired by real people he met in Japan, initially planned as separate stories targeting different audiences. However, a news report about a serial killer on the loose in Chiba led him to intertwine their narratives, focusing on their shared struggles and survival instincts. Ordiales emphasizes the film's exploration of life's unpredictability and the internal obstacles individuals face, often at a steep price.

Carlo Aquino on Portraying an Overseas Filipino Worker

Carlo Aquino immersed himself in the role of Manuel Hidalgo, reflecting the challenges faced by many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Drawing parallels between his own career fluctuations and Manuel's journey, Aquino remarked on the authenticity of the character's experiences, hoping to capture the struggles and sacrifices of Filipinos working abroad.

An Award-Winning Cast & Japan-Philippines Co-Production

The film boasts a powerhouse cast, including Sho Ikushima, Sarah Jane Abad, Dindo Arroyo, Kei Kurosawa, Ian De Leon, Aoi Okuyama, Ken Yamamura, Stefanie Arianne, Polo Ravales, Zeppi Borromeo, Misa Shimizu, and Rie Shibata. "Crosspoint" seamlessly blends the storytelling traditions of both the Philippines and Japan, presenting a raw and emotionally charged cinematic experience. Takehiro Hira, recently Emmy-nominated for his performance in "Shogun," delivers a compelling portrayal of a man on the brink, while Carlo Aquino, known for his award-winning role in "Whispers in the Wind," brings depth and intensity to Manuel’s turbulent journey.

A Landmark Netflix Acquisition

Philippines-based Fire & Ice Media has successfully sold the Asia Pacific rights for "Crosspoint" to Netflix in a major deal secured during the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) in Busan. This strategic move highlights the growing demand for high-quality Filipino cinema on international streaming platforms. "Crosspoint" premieres on Netflix Philippines on March 13, 2025.

Critical Reception

"Crosspoint" has garnered positive reviews for its storytelling and performances. ABS-CBN praised the film's impressive visuals and heartwarming moments, noting its ability to engage the audience emotionally.

Ungeek highlighted the film's deliberate pacing and character development, allowing viewers to empathize deeply with the protagonists.

Audience reviews have also been favorable, with ClickTheCity Movies describing it as "super well-acted" and "impressive."

Behind the Scenes

The collaboration between Carlo Aquino and Takehiro Hira has been a focal point in discussions about the film. In an interview, Hira expressed his enthusiasm for the unique script and the opportunity to portray a father's love, a theme that resonated with him personally.

Aquino, on the other hand, shared his initial intimidation working alongside the esteemed Japanese actor but found the experience enriching and inspiring.

Conclusion

"Crosspoint" stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration in cinema, bringing together diverse talents to tell a universal story of survival, redemption, and the human spirit. With its upcoming release on Netflix Philippines, audiences have the opportunity to experience this gripping narrative and the stellar performances that bring it to life.

Scorching Heat, Deadly Dengue, and a Volcanic Eruption: Is Your Child’s School Safe?

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

As the Philippines confronts a series of environmental challenges, the Department of Education (DepEd), under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Angara, is proactively implementing measures to safeguard the well-being of learners and educators. These initiatives address the escalating temperatures, the aftermath of Mt. Kanlaon's recent eruption, and a burgeoning dengue outbreak.

Mitigating the Impact of Extreme Heat

In response to soaring temperatures nationwide, DepEd has issued directives to ensure that educational activities proceed without compromising health and safety. Schools are encouraged to adjust class schedules to minimize exposure during peak heat periods. Suggested modifications include conducting morning sessions from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., implementing asynchronous learning between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and holding afternoon sessions from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

To further alleviate heat-related concerns, schools are advised to enhance classroom ventilation by opening windows and installing additional fans. The provision of hydration stations and the distribution of insulated water containers are also being prioritized to ensure access to potable water. Moreover, outdoor activities during peak heat hours are to be limited, and health personnel are tasked with monitoring and managing cases of heat-related illnesses.

While there is no automatic suspension of classes due to extreme heat, local government units (LGUs) have the authority to declare class suspensions in affected areas. In such cases, schools are prepared to shift to alternative learning modalities to ensure the continuity of education.

Addressing the Aftermath of Mt. Kanlaon's Eruption

The recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon has significantly impacted communities in the Western and Central Visayas regions. The eruption prompted the evacuation of approximately 87,000 residents, with ashfall affecting areas as far as Antique province.

Consequently, numerous schools have been closed, and a nighttime curfew has been imposed to ensure public safety.

DepEd reports that 11 schools are currently serving as evacuation centers, affecting 11,177 students and 441 personnel.

To address the disruption, these schools have adopted alternative delivery modalities, including the distribution of self-learning modules and the implementation of the Dynamic Learning Program. DepEd is closely coordinating with local authorities to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to the affected schools and communities.

Combating the Rising Dengue Cases

Amid these challenges, a dengue outbreak has emerged, affecting students and teachers across Luzon. DepEd has recorded 124 cases among learners in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and the Cordillera Administrative Region. In response, schools have been directed to implement the Department of Health's 5S Strategy, which includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, practicing self-protection measures, seeking early consultation for symptoms, supporting fogging only in outbreak situations, and sustaining hydration. Collaboration with LGUs and health agencies is being strengthened to monitor cases and enforce preventive measures effectively.

A Unified Approach to Ensuring Safety and Educational Continuity

DepEd's comprehensive approach to these overlapping challenges underscores its commitment to the safety and well-being of learners and educators. By adapting class schedules, enhancing health and safety protocols, and collaborating with local authorities, DepEd aims to ensure that education continues uninterrupted, even in the face of environmental adversities.

Game-Changer for OFWs! Visa & PHLPost Revolutionize Remittances—Here’s How

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In a landmark move to bolster financial inclusion in the Philippines, Visa, a global leader in digital payments, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost). This strategic partnership aims to expand access to financial services for underserved Filipinos, particularly those in rural communities.

Empowering the Underserved

The collaboration between Visa and PHLPost is set to modernize and extend the reach of financial services across the nation. PHLPost, traditionally known for handling remittances and money orders for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), as well as disbursing healthcare subsidies, social welfare payments, and disaster relief funds, will now integrate Visa's innovative digital payment solutions. This integration aims to streamline financial transactions, reduce remittance costs, and enhance security, thereby easing the financial burdens on OFWs and their families.

Postmaster General Luis Carlos emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "We deeply honor the sacrifices of our OFWs—sila ang ating mga 'Bagong Bayani' and the backbone of many Filipino families. They work tirelessly, endure homesickness, and make countless sacrifices to provide a better future for their loved ones. Through this initiative, we aim to ease their burden by streamlining financial transactions and reducing remittance costs, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they truly deserve."

Enhancing MSME Competitiveness

Beyond individual consumers, the partnership also focuses on empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). By enhancing business and financial literacy among MSMEs, Visa and PHLPost aim to foster economic growth and resilience within this vital sector. This initiative aligns with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (NSFI) 2022-2028, which serves as a blueprint to drive financial inclusion toward inclusive growth and financial resilience.

Advancements in Digital Banking

In a related development, the BSP recently lifted a moratorium on establishing digital banks, aiming to promote financial inclusion and digital transformation. The Monetary Board has authorized a maximum of 10 digital banks to operate in the Philippines, with six already in operation.

This move underscores the country's commitment to embracing digital solutions to enhance financial accessibility.

Conclusion

The partnership between Visa and PHLPost marks a significant step toward bridging the financial inclusion gap in the Philippines. By leveraging digital payment innovations and a vast network, this collaboration promises to make financial services more accessible, efficient, and secure for underserved Filipinos, thereby contributing to the nation's inclusive growth and financial resilience.
