More than 300 species of sharks and rays nowhreatened with extinction

Wazzup Pilipinas

Giant manta ray is now classified as endangered.

New assessments by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released last December 10 show 316 chondrichthyan species – sharks, rays and skates, and chimaeras – are now threatened with extinction.

The Red List updates include over 420 assessments of shark and ray species, of which 154 species are classified as “threatened,” or at risk of extinction in the wild. Among them are four hammerhead shark species (Sphyrna family) and four species of angel shark (Squatina family) that are endangered or critically endangered, making them some of the most threatened shark families, as well as the giant manta ray (Mobula birostris), which is now facing a very high risk of extinction.

“These findings are sadly predictable,” said Dr. Andy Cornish, Leader of Sharks: Restoring the Balance, WWF’s global shark and ray conservation programme. “As IUCN’s Shark Specialist Group continues to pull the curtain back on the state of sharks and rays, the crisis should be triggering alarm bells for anyone who cares about the health of our ocean. Twenty years have passed since the international community recognised the threat of overfishing through the International Plan of Action for Sharks. Yet, obviously, not nearly enough has been done to halt the overfishing that is pushing these animals to the brink of extinction.”

The IUCN update grimly notes that the first shark or ray species may already have gone extinct. The lost shark (Carcharhinus obsoletus) was classified as critically endangered (possibly extinct), meaning there is a chance it is already extinct in the wild, but more surveys are needed to prove that. As its ominous name suggests, this species was only described from museum specimens in 2019, so has been lost since the moment it was found.

Of around 200 previously data deficient species, meaning the available information was not sufficient to evaluate their conservation status, 57 are now threatened. Together with the case of the lost shark, this reveals an alarming trend when newly described species or those we do not know enough about are already in peril. This highlights the importance of species-specific information – particularly species-specific shark and ray fishing data – to allow for effective conservation.

Since the last global Red List update for sharks and rays was conducted in 2014, these marine fishes are fast becoming one of the most threatened groups of vertebrates on the planet.

“Governments must take measures that reduce the overfishing of sharks and rays as a matter of urgency,” Dr Cornish said. “We also desperately need to scale up efforts to recover populations of the most threatened species. Failure to do so will inevitably result in a wave of extinctions happening on our watch. We must seize the moment to stop that from happening.”

We already have the solutions required in most cases. Management strategies effective in recovering populations are typically a combination of well-enforced catch limits or prohibitions on catching the species, together with protection of critical habitats. A nice example is the Barndoor skate (Dipturus laevis) which has recovered sufficiently to no longer be threatened with extinction.

Our ocean is in crisis due to pollution, climate change and overexploitation of marine life on a massive scale. Sharks and rays, which have evolved over 400 million years ago, are among the worst affected by overfishing. Populations continue to decline, and yet over 1,000 shark and ray species play various key roles in marine ecosystems, making them intertwined with the health of our ocean and the people who depend on it.

7 out of all 8 hammerhead species (Sphyrna family) are now threatened (5 are critically endangered, 1 is endangered, and 1 vulnerable). Of 22 angelshark species (Squatina family), 13 are now threatened (7 are critically endangered, 3 endangered, and 3 vulnerable).

Face shields and masks now required at all times outside residence

Wazzup Pilipinas!

All persons are now required to wear both face shields and face masks AT ALL TIMES outside of their residence per IATF Resolution No.88

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque says Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) now mandates the public to wear both face shields and face masks in all public places.

Face shields were previously only required inside establishments like malls, shops, restaurants and other enclosed areas.

It's been 9 f*cking months we've been battling this virus. Sadly, Philippines is running at 480K #COVID19 cases.

These IATF f*cktards are still running around like headless chickens.

I thought they have already lifted that rule? or it has never been implemented and now lang ipapatupad? I’m honestly so confused.

IATF is whack! There isn't even enough evidence that proves face shields effectiveness and it isn't even recommended by CDC or WHO. No other country has implemented this! Just us!

PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas has also warned partygoers this Christmas season that they would be arrested in accordance with directives from the IATF.

It's no longer the face mask & face shield!

It's the manipulation of numbers and incompetence of this government!

It always feels like the IATF is just trying to come up with more reasons to arrest people.

Philippine National Police (PNP) statistics must be low, they had to create a new "offense".

Para magmukhang may nagagawa sila. Isasama 'yung number of people arrested sa measure nila ng success.

Para sa lahat pa ba yan o exempted mga tropapips & amo nila? Double standards na naman sigurado.

“Yes (police will arrest partygoers)… It’s not allowed… Parties are prohibited,” Sinas said in a press conference on Monday when asked about partygoers.

Sinas, who received constant backlash over his birthday bash in May while Luzon was under lockdown, explained that even dinner events or similar gatherings could be considered as parties.

But if attendees follow existing protocols, they would be allowed.

Well, it does not say how we are going to wear our face shield. If it says "to wear full coverage face shields covering the face..." then it is clear. Another loophole in the IATF language.

I literally see Heng De face shields in trash cans and all over the streets because they're basically useless and inferior. Why did the IATF even mandate face shields? The Philippines is literally the only country to adopt face shields on top of masks for the populace.

Other countries are able to eliminate COVID transmissions WITHOUT face shields. So the real question is, sinong negosyante ang pinapaboran ng gobyerno sa face shield policy na ito?

Made in Tsina. So yah know who.

For sure may government official na kikita sa kagaguhan idea na ito.

There really is a government official who imports these masks, that's why they be pushing so hard for this shit.

Ang dami pa yata na import ng supplier kaya need mapaubos.

Grabe it's so uncomfortable to wear and not even as safe as they claim it to be.

Sampung piso na nga lang sila ngayon. Ang bilis din naflood yung market.

Making face shields mandatory is the covid version of a corporate tree planting activity. Makes it look like you're helping but you're not actually doing that much.

To be clear, I have nothing against face shields. There is evidence that they do add SOME protection when used in combination with masks. but considering what the IATF already has (and more importantly, has not) done, this is absolutely weak shit.

Considering that infectious droplets and aerosols are easily diluted by the air in outdoor settings, this new requirement suggests that the IATF merely playing at infection control.

Also, why did IATF not able to sign an advance purchase agreement with Pfizer and Moderna?  Singapore was able to do that.  And will give it free even to OFWs.
