Art for Everyone at SM Premier Malls Features Artworks by Upcoming and Established Filipino Artists

Wazzup Pilipinas!

It’s Art for Everyone as six SM Premier malls simultaneously showcase a curated selection of paintings and artworks from February 16 to 27, 2016. These include SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Aura Premier, SM Southmall, SM City Cebu, and SM Lanang Premier from February 27 and 28, 2016.

The event is held in support of National Arts Month on its 25th year since it was first declared via Presidential Proclamation No. 683 in 1991.

While SM has been consistently supporting cultural and art events for years now, “Art for Everyone” is being held simultaneously in these six (6) SM malls for the first time. It features artworks created by upcoming and established Filipino artists of various backgrounds, featuring different styles and media.

Dr. Patrick Flores, Curatorial Consultant for “Art for Everyone” emphasizes how important the event is in providing shoppers a venue to enjoy and learn from art, a venue that is free and accessible for everyone, and for artists and galleries to showcase their masterpieces.

PFF Advisory on AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 Group Stage Hosting

Wazzup Pilipinas!

After inspection by its rights holder Lagardere Sports (formerly World Sports Group), the Asean Football Federation (AFF) has disapproved the 15-thousand seat Rizal Memorial Football Stadium as primary venue of the Group Stage matches to be hosted by the Philippines. The 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup competition regulations require among others a minimum 30-thousand seat capacity for primary venues of group stage matches.

While the 20-thousand seat privately-owned Philippine Sports Stadium has also been nominated, AFF however requires submission of a written stadium hire contract. Deadline of 31 January 2016 and further deadline of 9 February 2016 have lapsed without PFF receiving a signed contract from PSS.

With no qualified stadia at the moment, PFF is compelled to bring the matter to AFF and will take up the stadia qualification during the AFF Council meeting on 12 March 2016 at Danang, Vietnam.

Vagari by Josephine Turalba on March 6 to 31 at Galleria Duemila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Galleria Duemila presents Vagari a solo exhibition by Josephine Turalba. The exhibition takes its name from the Latin word Vagari meaning to wander. Her latest suite of works features an array of multimedia works that encompasses photography, video installation, painting, and serigraph print.

In Vagari, leitmotifs are laden with narratives of migration of sea, land, and air. As with most of Turlaba’s works, Vagari also takes the form of an investigative and multidisciplinary approach that shifts in context as her medium changes. Migration Series 1 is a pool of vibrant serigraph and collograph prints that depict refugee narratives wherein the subjects are seemingly abstracted. While No Way Forward, No Way Back, a briskly didactic 9:45 minute triptych video on storylines of exodus shows Turalba assuming her signature character Kinari, a mythical being who is half-bird, half-woman known as goddess of wealth in Hindu and protector of human beings in Southeast Asian Buddhist mythology—doing just that as migrations are portrayed. This particular work extends to Turlba’s evocative single frame video-stills, offering a glimpse into the rich introspection of a wanderlust artist who has set countless places both existing and imaginary as potent spaces in the pursuit of grasping the insurmountable immensity of the human experience.
