The research team, featuring scholars from MIT’s Senseable City Lab, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, didn't just speculate; they mapped the inequality in high definition.
By analyzing nine iconic cities across four continents—Amsterdam, Barcelona, Belem, Boston, Hong Kong, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, Stockholm, and Sydney—the study found a universal, haunting pattern. "Strictly by looking at which areas are shaded, we can tell where rich people and poor people live," says Fabio Duarte, MIT urban studies scholar and study co-author.
