Opening to the public on 20 April 2024, the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte) returns this week in Venice with a strong showing of Singapore offerings. This year, Singapore Art Museum presents Seeing Forest at the Pavilion of Singapore, while National Gallery Singapore is contributing artworks (from our national collection) to the Nucleo Storico section of the Central Pavilion, a first in our nation’s history.

Seeing Forest at the Pavilion of Singapore

The 11th edition of the Pavilion of Singapore at the Biennale Arte features Seeing Forest by artist Robert Zhao Renhui, in collaboration with curator Haeju Kim. Commissioned by the National Arts Council, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and organised by the Singapore Art Museum, the exhibition invites visitors to step into a mysterious, forested zone that exists both in the imagination and in Singapore to uncover the complex web of human and non-human co-existence. The exhibition features a two-channel video installation, a sculptural video installation, and a photographic work, and is complemented by an imaginary forest map in Singapore.

Singapore’s National Collection in Venice

For the first time in the country’s history, Singapore is also represented in the Main Exhibition of the 60th International Art Exhibition, entitled Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Eight artworks from National Gallery Singapore’s collection will be featured in the Nucleo Storico, in a sub-section entitled “Portraits”. The artworks range from self-portraits to representations of working class and indigenous persons, including Jeune fille en blanc (Young Girl in White) (1931) by Lê Phổ (Vietnam/France), Self Portrait (c. 1946) by Georgette Chen (China/Singapore), Labourer (Lunch Break) (1965) by Lai Foong Moi (Malaysia/Singapore) and more.
