Top Ten News Updates About the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We've had a lot of proud moments recently, like when Pia Wurtzbach won the Miss Universe 2015 title! For more than six decades, the Miss Universe has empowered women to showcase their beauty, intellect and advocacy!

Now with the pageant being held in Manila, there is a lot of pressure to Maxine Medina for a back-to-back win. However, with the viral videos of her showing how she answered during her interviews, people are saying that her chances of winning may be a bit slim if she will answer in English at the Question and Answer portion of the coronation night. Should Maxine get a translator?

However, becoming Miss Universe is a destiny. Some of our girls gave the best answers but failed.

As the other candidates of the Miss Universe beauty pageant continue to come in to Manila, a big flurry of activities leading up to Miss Universe coronation night are continuously being held in Manila. Nothing like a beauty pageant that turns downtown Binondo in Manila into a fashion playground.

The candidates just came from Boracay, Oriental Mindoro and Vigan, Ilocos Sur a few days ago, and now back in Manila for the Governor's Ball but will continue in other places like Cebu, Baguio, Batangas, and Davao soon before they finally gather again for the coronation night on January 30.

One of the best parts of this whole beauty pageant experience is making friends from all around the world...or the "Universe." Or is it sincerely like that? Since they are all competing with each other, some are saying that the engagement is not as "pure" but more likely "fake" or "forced" just like their smiles everytime they face the cameras of photo and video-graphers. Winning the Miss Congeniality or "friendship" is a good enough award than bringing home nothing at all. Well, every candidate wants to make their country proud of them, but only one will be wearing the Miss Universe crown.

The Miss Universe 2016 ...or is it 2017?... coronation night will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on January 30, 2017 at 8 am Philippines time.

Below are some news related to the Miss Universe beauty pageant:

1. Sierra Leone, represented by Hawa Kamara, will be in the Miss Universe beauty pageant for the first time. Beginner's luck for her? Why not! But I still vote for the most deserving. No politically-motivated decisions that would only further taint the image of the biggest beauty pageant in the world...the universe. Host country or not, the Philippines has a big chance especially if Maxine Median will make use of a translator instead.

2. The 65th #MissUniverse theme song entitled "Confidently Beautiful" will be sang by Jona, a Filipina singer. Perhaps you already know where they got the inspiration for the title. The phrase was made popular by Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. If I were Pia, she should also end her reign with a bang! So there may be some surprises during the coronation night.

3. Steve Harvey was slammed for racism ahead of the Miss Universe pageant. He is confirmed to host Miss Universe 2017. He is set to redeem himself. I'm sure his previous mistake in last year's crowning will be among the jokes or laughable topics.

4. Solar Entertainment, TV5, PLDT and Smart tied-up for Miss Universe. GMA Network also secured a partnership with Solar Entertainment for coverage. Where's ABS-CBN ang Globe Telecom?

5. Is it true that Taylor Swift will perform at the Miss Universe beauty pageant? For Filipino entertainers, Sarah Geronimo was rumored to be among the performers, but Lea Salonga has already denied she was tapped for the pageant. Seriously, I now see her more as a judge due to her previous Talent Show / Reality TV judging. Bruno Mars wanted to perform but is busy with other international acts. There will be an international group to perform as well.

6. Miss Universe Thailand Chalita Nam Suansane came to our country with 17 suitcases. The 22-year-old Thai beauty queen was also seen wearing what seemed to be a Barong Tagalog-inspired outfit. Many are saying she has a big chance of winning the crown.

7. I honestly don't see anything wrong or funny about Kiran Jassal, Miss Universe Malaysia 2016's, national costume. Stop making a big deal out of it. The PetronasTwin Towers of Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia-inspired national costume is cool.

8. I wouldn't be surprised if Mocha Uson gets to participate in any of the events/activities of this year's Miss Universe. She also has the height, body and face to easily blend in with the equally sexually appealing candidates.

9. Why are they forbidding "selfies" with the Miss Universe candidates? Actively doing selfies made Filipinos the Selfie Capital of the World - a recognition that made us very influential in social media or online. Recently there were news that the government has blocked porno sites which was probably caused by the news that the Philippines was also number one in accessing PornHub. What is the government doing to our country?

10. Luis "Chavit" Singson believes hosting the Miss Universe would help improve the country’s image abroad. But Gabriela women's group is saying the beauty pageant is a cover-up of the negative image of our country due to the increase in ExtraJudicial Killings (EJKs) being masqueraded as a "War on Drugs."  I say, remove Chavit Singson from the government to give it a better image, because whenever you mention his name, you can't help thinking about Jueteng.
