WD My Passport Air 500 GB Portable Storage Drive Review

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Well, I definitely need more hard drive space. That would always be a requirement every after few months since I deal with lots of photos that I take during events - and product reviews would be one of them busy activities that will add more files on my USB storage drives.

I really do not want to fill my MacBook  hard drive with all my files. It's so difficult to organize with the very limited space taht I most likely will just reserve for my Photo and Video Editing applications. Most of the time I would like to carry the photos and videos around in several USB drives to show them to my clients.

However, dangling with me several USB drives just won't do any more. I need more storage space but I want a durable storage space at the same time. I'm even willing to pay more just to keep my data safe, and I prefer a storage space that will let me access my data fast - with ease and convenience. Having no worries means a lot especially when your files mean more expensive than the gadget itself.

Luckily, I stumbled upon the WD My Passport Air.

Heck! There are other portable storage drives out there with bigger capacity, but why buy more expensive ones when 500 GB is more than enough for my needs. I don't really need to bring along all my files (just the ones I need to show to existing and potential clients). I leave the bulk of my files at home stored in my laptop and desktop computer with Terabytes of hard drive storage. I do not have the habot of deleting my precious photos but I upload some of the used ones in my Facebook account and many in the cloud....and just bring along the new ones that I am still working on. Eventually, the files inside my portable storage drive will soon be transferred to my fixed drives at home.

Unboxing the beauty was so neat! I get to take it out from its yellow packaging. Trying my best not to ruin the packaging so I could put it back neatly just in case its time to sell it and buy a new and bigger capacity portable drive.

My Passport Air 500 GB is a sleek 11 mm thin ultra-slim, all-metal portable drive (emphasis : no plastic) designed to complement your MacBook Air with its premium, aluminum enclosure. The black and silver color combination matches perfectly well.

I got to test the WD My Passport when I needed to show a client my photography portfolio. Basically, I needed to copy most of my photos of beauty contestants from the past Binibining Pilipinas, Miss Earth, and very recent, the Mutya ng Pilipinas which has just began presenting their candidates.

This meant a lot of files to be transferred from my computer fixed storage drive to the WD My Passport Air portable storage drive. We are talking about several megabytes of photos.

I've actually done the same thing before last year, and this allowed me to compare the speed of my previous file transfer procedure with this.

How did it faired?

Aside from being quickly detected by my computer, the file transfer process was magnificently fast. It actually cut my task into almost half as compared with my previous procedure of using USBs and other portable storage drives.

With its USB 3.0 feature, it offered really blazing speed that allowed me to accomplish my  task in less time.

Worried of hackers, viruses and sudden hardware failures?

There is also password protection with hardware encryption, and is compatible with Apple Time Machine to back up your files. As they say "It’s the ultra-slim, ultra-fast, ultra-safe portable drive for your creative life."

It is indeed a remarkable little gadget that suits my current needs - for now. I am sure that the future will demand more space and speed, but until that time comes, I am mostly impressed by the WD My Passport Air portable 500 GB storage drive.
