Traveling to the Philippines for The First Time

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Philippines is one of those destinations that often gets overlooked when making long-term plans. Other trips are usually higher on the bucket list, but it’s a mistake to overlook them. The trip will be one of the most enjoyable you’ll have, but it will take some preparation since traveling in South Asia isn’t always as comfortable as you may expect it to be. If you take such preparations, you’ll have a safer and overall more enjoyable trip.

Driving On Your Own

The first arrangement to make is to be prepared to drive on your own. This will allow you to keep your own itinerary and explore the Philippines with more freedom than you otherwise could. That’s much more comfortable than waiting on transportation and sticking to arrangements someone else has made for you.

In order to do so, you’ll need international drivers license. It’s a document allowing you to rent a car and drive in the Philippines. The permit is only valid if you also have a national driving license and a passport with you and if all the documents are up to date.

Check the Weather Reports

Checking the weather report is more important in the Philippines than it would be on any other trip. During the monsoon season, you may end up having to change your plans to stay safe. Monsoon rains can sometimes last for as long as ten days and therefore ruin your whole trip.

On the other hand, typhoons don’t really have a season and can happen at any time and affect big parts of the country. The best thing to do is to be aware that there is one and try to stay away from the area.

Don’t Plan Too Diligently

It’s rather important not to plan your trip in too much detail since there are plenty of chances something will go wrong. Boats and other vehicles may be late or they may break down. Weather can cause you to be locked in, and sometimes you may have trouble finding accommodations.

The best way to go therefore is to leave yourself some room when it comes to scheduling. This will save you a lot of stress and allow you to make the most out of a trip even if something goes wrong in the process. There are also plenty of mobile apps that can help you plan everything.

Use Hotels Rather than Private Accommodations

Tourism is a key industry in the Philippines and you’re likely to find many offers for private accommodations during your stay. These are usually less expensive than staying in a hotel. However, it’s better not to do so, anyway.

Manila is a huge and often intimidating city for a foreign visitor and chances are you may find some bad actors. Nothing similar can happen in a hotel. It’s also worth knowing that hotels in the Philippines are usually much less expensive than those in the West, even when it comes to high-end establishments. Therefore, it’s a small price to pay for safety and security.

Farewell to the Philippines' National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

I am saddened to learn of the passing of National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose. He is the Philippines’ most translated author and most prolific novelist in English. He passed away on Thursday evening (Jan. 6, 2022) at age 97.

National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose has passed away without a Nobel Prize.

Today is still a day of mourning. We just lost a revered and esteemed National Artist, F. Sionil Jose. But for this woketard who embodies the antithesis of decency, there will come a day when you, too, will follow in his footsteps, but the difference is that noone will remember your good works...only your sour-graping.

He was still a significant intellectual figure, who at his best moments wielded an incisive, elegant pen. We can never erase that in history. But knowing how the Marcoses has been doing historical revisionism, if there's a trail of money, anything is possible.

He died Thursday evening at the Makati Medical Center where he was supposed to undergo an angioplasty Friday, Jan. 7, according to his wife, Tessie Jovellanos Jose..

Unfortunately, he left a legacy tainted with the worst character arc in his twilight years. I would appeal for a sense of historical nuance & graciousness. The ornery, reactionary positions he took in his final years should not be allowed to overshadow what he achieved, nor however should they be glossed over. They must be understood.

F. Sionil Jose might have turned questionable during his later years, however it cannot be denied that he still left a mark in Philippine literature. After all, he won’t be National Artist for nothing.

Anyone else who had been to his little bookshop along Padre Faura, between Bocobo and Adriatico in Ermita, Manila?

Bought books many times from SOLIDARIDAD, aka "The Best Little Bookstore in Asia." It opened in 1964, owned and managed by the late National Artist F. SIONIL JOSE.

These, along with my collection of comic books and magazines, graphic novels, all about pop culture, because I also loved the drawings and illustrations, both from local and foreign artists.

Similarly, when CDR King was selling those writable or recordable CDs, I was collecting every content possible that I had a stack of CDs that piled up, and ended only when online and digital e-books boomed, and thus ended my years of collecting.

Then I discovered social media and blogging which is my current playpen or sandbox.

F.Sionil Jose's lines: This is the harsh truth about us: not only do Filipinos ignore books, literature - we do not understand how important the arts are - not just to those of us who work at it, but to the nation as a whole.

He was a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Literature in 1980 and was conferred the Order of National Artist for Literature in 2001.

The National Artist for Literature was known for his novels and short stories about class struggles and colonialism in Filipino society.

He was a staunch anti-Marcos and consistent in his walkouts on events where Imelda was present. But he slowly succumbed to the curse of old age equals right-wing evidenced by his recent political commentaries.

The great F. Sionil Jose some of us admired died long ago.

Whether you like him or hate him (especially now), there's no questioning that F. Sionil Jose is a master in literature.

I realize that F. Sionil Jose has said many questionable things but I do not think that we should dance on his grave.

We cannot be like those poorly-raised Duterte fanatics who celebrated when Carlos Celdran died--not while we're hoping to fix the country the DDS ruined.

Samuel K. Tan was known, or rather was criticized, for his supposed “bias” toward the Marcoses. He was one of the academicians who partook in Marcos’ biggest brainwashing project — the Tadhana project.

Ditto with F. Sionil Jose, while we take a pause, we will never forget.

F Sionil Jose is gone. But we’re still here. The evil actions of this regime are not yet reversed. We’re left to ourselves to fight for the victims that he once sidelined — the victims of the tyranny he once called a “revolution.” As he moves and passes on, we will never forget.

“He wrote stories and he believed in them.”

He was brilliant---a sun insisting to be resplendent even during the twilight of his life.

For now, I pause to honor his greatest artistic achievements.

Sumalangit nawa, Nick Joaquin will be waiting for him there.

Rest in peace, F. Sionil José.

The Top 10 Most Expensive Cars for a Lawyer to Buy

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Here are 10 most xpensive cars for lawyers to purchase or lease:

1) BMW 760Li ($140,250)

- It should come as no surprise that BMW makes an appearance on this list. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton drives one, so it must be good! This German-engineered sedan offers seating for four and comes powered by a massive twin-turbocharged V12 engine that has six liters of displacement. Its output is rated at an impressive 535 horsepower, which propels the 760Li to 60mph in just 5.4 seconds. The 760Li can also reach an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

2) Bentley Mulsanne ($208,825)

- The Mulsanne name was first used on the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III chassis back in 1965 and now it's being used again on this powerful luxury sedan from Bentley Motors. This super-luxe car starts out strong with its 6.8 liter turbocharged V8 that delivers 505 horsepower! It then adds advanced all-wheel drive for enhanced traction, four-corner air suspension, electronic ride control and a leather-wrapped dash to create a true Grand Tourer. When it goes on sale next year, the Mulsanne will carry a base price of $208,825 in the United States.

3) Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive ($127,290)

- The Panamera name is supposed to indicate that this car offers "Porsche performance" in every aspect of its performance envelope. This four door sedan is also long (19 feet 2 inches), wide (76 inches) and heavy (4377 pounds). It features seating for five passengers with plenty of space for rear seat occupants thanks to its extended wheelbase design. As you might guess from its size and weight, this Porsche is no slouch in the performance department. It's powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.8 liter V8 engine that produces 500 horsepower and it will explode to 60mph in just 4.6 seconds when equipped with Porsche's "Sport Chrono" option package.

4) Jaguar XJR ($84,000)

- This full size luxury sedan was originally launched in 1992 but it has been updated several times since then—most recently in 2008. The XJR is an automobile that lets passengers know they are riding in an old school British car because of its distinctive grille design and traditional wire mesh radiator cover. Despite this throwback look, the XJR is anything but old; supercharged 5 liter V8 engine powers the car and it delivers a supremely luxurious driving experience to its occupants.

5) Audi A8L W12 ($121,000)

- William D King observed that the majority of the vehicles on this list consist of super luxury sedans from Europe, but Audi has managed to sneak onto the list with an American-made full size sedan. This vehicle is powered by a 6.3 liter 12 cylinder engine that features both direct injection and twin turbochargers in order to generate an impressive 520 horsepower and 479 ft/lbs of torque. The body of the A8L was developed between Audi's design studios in Ingolstadt and Santa Monica, California (That means it was designed in Germany and then built America).

6) Mercedes CL65 AMG ($129,000)

- Mercedes has a long-standing relationship with AMG and that is why it was easy for them to join forces once again on this super luxury coupe. The CL 65 AMG delivers an amazing 612 horsepower from its massive twin turbocharged V12 engine. This car can go from 0 to 60mph in just 4 seconds flat thanks to its automatic top speed limiter that prevents the car from going over 155 mph. In total this car weighs 5990 pounds which means it's heavy enough for plenty of damage if you crash!

7) Maybach 57S ($416,500)

- When it comes to luxury vehicles, Maybach usually isn't a name that comes up very often. The 57S is a clear exception to that rule as it combines plenty of luxury amenities with some impressive performance technology from Mercedes. This car features an AMG tuned 5.5 liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine under the hood. The powerplant produces a staggering 630 horsepower and 660 ft/lbs of torque which is enough muscle to accelerate the Maybach from 0-60mph in just 4.8 seconds!

8) Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe ($429,900)

- It takes more than six liters of displacement to get on this list and that's why Rolls Royce earns a spot with their drophead version of the Phantom sedan. This vehicle accommodates two rear seat passengers thanks to its classic "dormobile" style folding roof. Under the hood you'll find a massive 6.75 liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine that produces 453 horsepower and 531 ft/lbs of torque, but that's just enough power to get this car in motion … not move it at a rapid pace. This vehicle has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph which means it's officially road legal when its roof is up!

9) Maybach 62S ($259,000)

- The previous Maybach on our list was impressive with its 630 horsepower 12 cylinder engine , but the Maybach 62S is even more so thanks to its 500 horsepower V12 powerplant . In spite of providing nearly twenty percent less power than the 57S, this car is actually a few ticks quicker thanks to its weight which starts at over 6000 pounds. This sedan will go from 0-60mph in 5 seconds flat and it won't stop until it reaches a top speed of 155 mph!

10) Mercedes S65 AMG ($221,000)

- There's a good chance the Maybach 62S would have been number ten on our list … but we went with the slightly less powerful Mercedes S 65 AMG. The previous Maybach included a 6.75 liter V12 engine while this one includes a whopping 6.0 liter twin turbocharged V12 engine that produces an astonishing 621 horsepower and 738 ft/lbs of torque. Unfortunately, both cars are electronically limited to 155 mph which means they won't be able to get out of each other’s way when the light turns green.

Conclusion

We have to give credit where credit is due … Germany has done an amazing job at producing some of the best luxury cars in the world. Six of these ten vehicles are German designed and all but one is made in Germany. As always, feel free to leave your opinion in our comments section. A Step-By-Step Guide to Create Large Clouds of Vapor from Your Va

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

If you’re an established vaper, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the term cloud-chasing by now. As vaping grew popular among the general public, most vapers started striving to create bigger and better clouds.

Nowadays, there are even competitions in cloud-chasing where you can win amazing prizes for your special skills.

Therefore, you’re surely wondering how you can produce those large smoky clouds of vapor by yourself. Here, you’ll find a handy guide on cloud-chasing you can use to practice your skills and bring them to an impressive level.

Choose a good kit

The first step to making big clouds is to choose a good kit. You can find plenty of pacha mama vape juice with uniquely blended fruit flavors at affordable prices that’ll allow you to practice your cloud-chasing techniques.

Essentially, you’ll want a kit that has variable MOD wattage. With it, you can adjust the output power mode of your device, which allows you to tweak your wattage levels and find the perfect setting. Furthermore, controlling the device's output also allows you to influence flavor and cloud production, which is what you’re aiming for when cloud-chasing.

Choose the sub-ohm quality coils that can handle the extreme heat of the device. The tank also needs to be of glass material that can take the heat and contents of the liquid you’re using. The size of the tank is also essential, especially if you plan on having long vaping sessions.

Additionally, the battery can also play an essential role in how successful your cloud-chasing session is. A high-quality and fully charged battery can withstand even the most demanding actions, which cloud-chasing is.

Use appropriate e-juices

Although vape juices come in all kinds of flavors, this isn’t exactly what you’re looking for when purchasing e-juices for cloud production.

Namely, all e-juices contain two primary ingredients - vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). The ratio of these two ingredients plays a vital role in cloud-chasing, and you can’t afford to ignore it.

For big clouds of vapor, you should aim towards a higher VG ratio. By using any liquid that has a 70% VG base or higher, you’ll be able to produce those big, dense clouds you’ve been dying to see. In our previous experience, it’s best to start with a 70VG/30PG ratio and slowly build your way up since going for a higher VG concentration right from the beginning can result in experiencing several side effects.

Thanks to the global popularity of cloud-chasing and the latest technology, brands have been coming up with more and more e-juice options with high VG content. Not only can you choose from a variety of companies, but now you can choose from many flavors and taste blends too.

Play around with settings

Once you have your vape kit and e-juices, it’s time to start experimenting with how the two work together. Because each vape kit and e-liquid is different, there are no universal settings that’ll work well with all your combinations.

Therefore, it’s important to play around with settings and achieve the most optimal results. Airflow and temperature control are the two key elements you’ll especially want to pay attention to.

For instance, increasing the airflow will quickly convert your e-liquid into vapor. That way, you’ll get most of your liquid transformed into big smoky clouds. If your vapor isn’t coming out hot enough, try increasing the wattage on your kit. Similarly, if your vape starts to get too hot, you can tone down the wattage and try it again.

Remember that finding the perfect settings takes a lot of time and practice. Since this is a trial and error process, you need to play around with your kit and e-liquids if you want to find out how you can get the biggest clouds of vapor.

Perfect your technique

Finally, your vaping and breathing techniques can also affect vapor production.

Before drawing on your vape, you should exhale as much air as possible. This will clear out your lungs from oxygen and will give you a bigger inhale capacity you can use to take in as much vape as possible.

Moreover, posture can also affect how much vape you can inhale. A straight back improves your lung capacity and allows you to take in more vape. As a simple test, compare your clouds when vaping with a straight back and hunched over. You’ll see what difference posture can make.

Exhaling your vapor slowly and steadily is the best technique to achieve consistent vape clouds. That way, you have plenty of control over the vapor, and you can practically do anything you like with it.

Focusing on your breathing and enjoying your vape can be frustrating, but once you start seeing progress in the breathing techniques, it’ll only get better from there. Remember, this is a learning process you can master only by practicing as much as possible, so be patient with yourself.

The bottom line

All in all, a lot goes into making large and dense vape clouds. That being said, the art of cloud-chasing isn’t as simple as many people believe. From finding the suitable mod kit and type of e-juice to learning about different settings and best breathing techniques, there’s certainly a lot you need to know if you want to succeed in cloud vapor production.

10 Best Places To Go For Adventure Trave

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Most thrill-seekers prefer embarking on a trip to explore the unfamiliar or unknown world, and why not? An adventure is the best way to experience the world while liberating one’s soul and improving their physical and mental state.

In addition, adventure trips push many people out of their comfort zone and place them in unfamiliar situations. This is an excellent way to test one’s mettle and do things differently. You also get to see a small, unknown world from a different perspective

Here you’ll find the ten best places to go for adventure travel.

1. Grand Canyon-United States

Why not start your adventure travel with a trip to one of the world’s natural wonders? Carved out by the Colorado River for over two billion years, the Grand Canyon makes the perfect spot for a river raft ride. Rather than taking a peek from the top, traversing the river is the best way to see all of the details of the great Grand Canyon. Besides the wild water, you’ll get to enjoy side canyons, swimming holes, Puebloan sites, and sandy beaches.

However, always ensure carrying all critical equipment and items whenever traveling to such isolated places. Items, including hiking accessories, medical kits, and subscription boxes, are vital to enhancing your adventure experience and overcoming unforeseen situations. Be mindful of purchasing only the Survival box containing hiking manuals, outdoor gear, emergency supplies, and survival tools, making your trip to Grand Canyon a breeze!

2. Thrihnukagigur Volcano-Iceland

Have you ever dreamed of peering into a volcano? How about taking a plunge into one? It’s something you can do, particularly in Iceland. Commercial tours began in 2012, allowing tourists to delve beneath the surface. Wearing a harness and clipped to a lift, you’ll be slowly lowered into the depths, 120 meters, of Thrihnukagigur Volcano. As you go down, you’ll experience seeing the colors purple, yellow, and red of the uniquely drained magma chamber. Water dripping and singing reveals the volcano’s outstanding acoustics. Its last eruption was 4,000 years ago, making Thrihnukagigur dormant.

3. Himalayas-Nepal

There are many things to see in Nepal, but one of the most breath-taking (and treacherous) places you can visit is the Mt. Everest Base Camp. On a 14-day trek, you’ll hike from Sagarmatha National Park to the shadows of the world’s highest mountain. Only a select few hikers receive permission to sleep at the Everest Base Camp with the summiteers or those hiking to the top of Mt. Everest. But, if you’re only looking to take a selfie, your 5,340-mile hike will take you to the base camp, where you can click pictures, and then hike down to Gorak Shep for a restful night.

4. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is becoming more well-known as an adventure spot. With its 19,730 square miles (about the size of West Virginia), a quarter of the land is protected jungle. You can ride in a hot-air balloon, zip-line down a mountain through the forest, or rock-climb up a mountain in the jungle. The best time of the year to tour is mid-December to April.

5. Antarctica

This adventure trip isn’t for the faint-hearted. Imagine taking a cruise into the Weddell Sea to the east as the ship starts to encroach on crashing icebergs. Are you thrilled yet? Now imagine unpredictable, treacherous conditions, often involving 32-foot seas and more in the Southern Ocean, which is where the Weddell Sea is located. You’re also in for a wildlife treat, such as the baleen whales swimming just under the surface and the penguins and seals sunning themselves on the ice.

6. Cape Town-South Africa

Deserts, mountains, and beaches -- You get it all with South Africa. Cape Town is the place to be if you’re specifically looking for adrenalinw-boosting activities, including hiking, climbing, kitesurfing, paragliding, surfing, and diving. With a thriving community, Cape Town has everything that an ideal adventure location offers. The best time of the year to explore is November to February.

7. Machu Picchu-Peru

Machu Picchu is one of those intriguing places that hid secretly in the misty mountains from the common eye. For the best experience, it’s a good idea to go on foot so that you can see all that the location has to offer. When trekking Machu Picchu, there’s a slow element of surprise followed by increasing excitement. Of course, you don’t have to hike the Inca Trail for the experience of a lifetime. You can always trek the ruins of Choquequirao, the Salkantay Trail, or the Vilcabamba Traverse.

8. Milford Track-New Zealand

If you’re looking for hikes to lakes, waterfalls, ice fields, forests, and places with pioneering history, New Zealand’s Milford Track is the place to go. Part of nine Great Walks, Milford Track is a four-day, 53.5km hike from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound, which cuts through the splendid Fiordland National Park to the top of Mackinnon Pass (1,154m).

9. Ningaloo-Australia

A trip to Australia wouldn’t be the same without swimming with the turtles or snorkeling in the Ningaloo Reef. Smaller than the Great Barrier Reef but packed with approximately 500 fish species, the Ningaloo Reef in some parts is just 100 meters offshore. This closeness to the beach makes it easy to see the abundance of marine life that lives in the waters.

You can find three of the seven species of the world’s marine turtles’ (green - endangered, hawksbill - critically endangered, and loggerhead -vulnerable) nest, beginning in November and ending in April. But, as turtles swim offshore all year, remember to bring your binoculars.

10. Amazon-Ecuador

Does canoeing and piranha fishing sound like fun? Or, maybe, sleeping in traditional indigenous Cofan Tribe huts and hiking the rainforest for the wildlife sights is an ideal adventure trip for you. Either way, you’re in for an experience of a lifetime in the Amazon in Ecuador. Some indigenous people of Ecuador’s Oriente, such as the Cofan, have mastered the art of community-based ecotourism. Touring with the Cofan is an excellent way to see the Amazon. With their experience with Westerners, they can provide the adventure you’re looking for in a vacation.

Conclusion

Adventure travel is an excellent way to unwind, let loose, and relieve stress. More people are opting to take adventure vacations than ever before. If you’re planning on taking an adventure trip, be sure to plan ahead and book early, as vacations like these are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

PEMSEA: How Recyclers are Helping Win the War Against Plastic Waste

Wazzup Pilipinas?!

Bakal, Bote, Plastik at Dyaryo!

Garbage is definitely the smelliest challenge facing the planet.

In one of the pioneering analyses of plastics, the world’s scientists calculated that humanity has produced 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic, 75% or 6.3 billion metric tons of which has become plastic waste. Along with discarded metal, rubber, paper and glass, the vast majority of plastics lie in landfills or float silently in our rivers, lakes and oceans.

There’s so much plastic lying around that scientists are proposing this era to officially be termed the Anthropocene, an epoch completely dominated by humans marked on the fossil record not by fossilized bones, but plastic.

Though humanity’s ability to produce waste still outstrips its ability to manage it, Pinoy waste pickers and junkshops are helping turn the tide in their own way. Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), a regional organization which pushes for integrated solutions to coastal and marine problems, including marine plastic pollution, talks with three of them.

The Picker: Sherwin Salazar

“The best time to hunt for scrap is right after homeowners leave their garbage out, but before government collection trucks arrive, usually between 10PM to 7AM. The sooner you can pick through garbage for good finds, the better,” shares Sherwin Salazar, a 38-year old mangangalakal or waste picker.

We’re outside a bustling junkshop in Dasmariñas City in Cavite where he had just sold over a thousand Pesos worth of . . . junk.

Sherwin is a master of the trade, having been a waste picker for 25 years. His parents separated early, so he learned to fend for himself. While other kids dreamed of the latest toys or videogames, Sherwin ‘hunted for treasure’ in Cavite’s garbage dumps.

“I was still in school when I started pawing through old lots, dumps and river banks in a never-ending search for bakal, bote, plastik at dyaryo (scrap metal, bottles, plastic and newspapers). I used a big old sack that weighed so much,” he recalls. “Since I worked hard, I was taken in by a junkshop, where I earned around PHP100 daily. I was just 12 then.”

Eventually, Sherwin traded his sack for a wooden kariton or pushcart. “I was so happy to get rid of that heavy old sack,” he laughs. With his slow but huge kariton, he could cover a bigger area, collecting heavier and more valuable scrap.

One day, he noticed a mambobote or bottle picker using a pedicab to haul heaps of bottles, prompting him to ask his boss if they could invest in one. “I couldn’t be prouder when I got that shiny new pedicab,” he says. Instead of collecting from rivers and nearby dumps, he could finally visit villages to get the best items like broken washing machines, air conditioners and other appliances.

Today Sherwin still collects scrap, but with a motorized tricycle which brings him to nearby cities like Tagaytay.

“Most Pilipinos think pangangalakal is nothing more than a dirty job, but it’s far better than working in other jobs like construction. You become your own boss and control your time so if you put in the hours and effort, you can make a surprising amount of money. These days I make anything from PHP1000 to PHP1500 daily. Yesterday I made PHP1200, even more than a call center agent.”

The garbage of others – plus his own grit – allowed Sherwin to raise a family. “I’m not ashamed to be called a mangangalakal or basurero. I’m proud of it, because I was able to provide honorably for my family, while putting my children through school and bringing them to nice places. The life of a waste picker is definitely dirty, but if you meet life’s challenges head-on and ask for a little help from above, then it’s really rewarding.”

The Junkshop Owner: Arles Gozar

“Trash is cash,” explains Arles Gozar, who runs the Angela Mae Junkshop in Dasmariñas. “I employ anywhere from nine to 15 people part-time to help pick and pack garbage that waste pickers or mangangalakal bring here.”

Looking like Santa Claus without a beard, the burly Arles is clad in a tight-fitting red rash-guard and colorful board-shorts. Behind him is his crew, expertly hacking apart old electric fans, exhaust fans, air conditioners and other items for usable parts. Every few minutes, a new picker brings in choice pickings in exchange for cash.

Most valuable of all is tanso or copper, sold at PHP355 per kilogramme (KG), followed by sibak or hard plastic (PHP15/KG), bakal or scrap metal (PHP14/KG), yero or corrugated iron sheets (PHP11/KG), bote or plastic bottles (PHP10/KG), lata or tin cans (PHP8/KG) and karton or cardboard (PHP4/KG).

While we were chatting, a small kid of about 10 brought in a cardboard box full of scrap paper. He got PHP4, enough perhaps to buy himself a bit of candy.

“Many people in this area don’t have jobs. By employing people even part-time, my tiny junkshop helps provide for them and their families. The garbage of others provides a good life for our family – I can even help my relatives from the province when they’re down and out, because we have a little extra.”

Junkshops like Arles’ provide a vital solution in the world’s quest to minimize waste – by recycling, upcycling or otherwise making use of items which would otherwise be bound for landfills and dumpsites, trash is reduced. Less trash means less garbage flowing down rivers whenever a dumpsite floods.

Junkshops are part of the solution to pollution. “We’re of course business owners first, but in our own small way, we’re doing what we can to help keep our country clean,” notes Arles.

Recycling to Survive: Miguel Sabaño

Like many people living in a shantytown called Tulay Kwatro at the northern tip of Kawit in Cavite, Miguel Sabaño, now 57, once relied on nearby brackish-water fishponds for food and livelihood. This changed when some of Cavite’s fishponds were converted into offshore gambling centers. Miguel and many others found themselves unemployed.

“Now all we have are these scrap rubber tires,” he laments. Making use of their time when no better jobs like construction arise, Miguel and the residents of his community while away the hours ripping out endless rows of polyester or nylon threads which give motorcycle tires and inner tubes their pliable structure. They use an array of tools – rusty pliers, converted nail cutters, even their bare hands to tear and pluck off threads, which form tiny piles by their feet.

Once cleaned, the tubes and tires sell for PHP20/KG, enough for about half a kilogramme of rice. A long day’s work might yield two kilogrammes of processed rubber. “It’s not a lot, but having rice today spells the difference between life and death for some people,” he says quietly.

Being large and durable, rubber tires take anywhere from 50 to 100 years to decompose naturally. Instead of being dumped into landfills, they can be shredded and turned into chips, powder, cement or fuel. Used tires can also be turned into tables, chairs, garbage bins, plant pots, sandals and other useful products, providing further income for communities which can find creative uses for them.

While reducing waste, recycling provides livelihood opportunities for some of the world’s poorest communities.

PEMSEA’s Project ASEANO

The country’s ingenious waste pickers, recyclers and junkshops play a key role in combatting waste.

“Supporting waste pickers and recycling facilities converts a significant portion of waste which would otherwise be dumped in landfills or in our rivers and seas, into useful products. These cottage industries also support the lives and livelihoods of thousands of Filipinos,” explains Thomas Bell, who manages PEMSEA’s Project ASEANO.

Project ASEANO aims to develop and promote sound and sustainable measures to reduce the impacts of plastic pollution and their implications on socioeconomic development and the environment. The project focuses on the city or municipal level, with Cavite’s Imus River as one of two project sites.

According to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), Cavite generated an average of 1514 tons of waste daily in 2018, 22% or 333 tons of which could still be recycled. The Imus River traverses the highest waste-generating cities in Cavite – Bacoor, Dasmariñas and Imus – making it a conveyor belt for plastics flowing out to Manila Bay.

Funded by the Norwegian Development Program to Combat Marine Litter and Microplastics, ASEANO is led by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) Indonesia in close collaboration with the PEMSEA Resource Facility and ASEAN Secretariat under the purview of the endorsing ASEAN sectoral body, the ASEAN Working Group on Coastal and Marine Environment (AWGCME).

The results of the project will be synthesized into an LGU training manual, toolkit and best practices handbook of policy, monitoring tools and technologies for plastics management that can be used as a reference by LGUs in Cavite, the rest of the Philippines, plus the entire ASEAN region.

“To decisively address plastic waste management, we need to include waste pickers and recyclers as major stakeholders,” concludes PEMSEA executive director Aimee Gonzales. “They are our frontliners in the war against waste.”

Hardware To Take Your Game Streaming To The Next Level

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

If you're wondering what hardware will enhance your gaming experience, then this article is for you.

Gaming is a fun way to unwind after a long day, meet new people online, and participate in a fast-paced, interactive art form. However, you'll need a couple of the most incredible gaming accessories to get the most out of the experience. You can play games with the same mouse and keyboard you use at work, but they aren't always ergonomically constructed.

Furthermore, gaming accessories allow you to personalize aspects of the experience, particularly lighting, to add atmosphere and pleasure. The world of tech accessories and streaming hardware is vast. Still, we've done the legwork for you by identifying the must-have items you'll need to put together a great gaming setup.

Steelseries Arctis Pro Gaming Headset

The Steelseries Arctis Pro has received the approval of many audiophiles if you're seeking one of the essential gaming equipment accessories, a headset. It can blend various sound sources and gives actual hi-res audio output. It's also one of the most excellent gaming laptop accessories because it operates beyond the desktop.

Coozoo USB Headset Mount

This product helps ensure your headset is secure, your electronics are charged, and your desk is free of clutter. This clever headset hanger mounts to the underside of your desk using 3M sticky tape or a screw, then provides two hooks and three USB connections for rapid charging. It even comes with extra wire management clips to hide the power wires.

Razer Gaming Mouse Bungee

Don't be fooled by the accessories' simplicity. Its weighted base for support and high-quality rust-free construction will immediately improve your PC gaming experience by decreasing the need to handle mouse connections. By offering a location to lay mouse wires, the Razer Gaming Mouse Bungee is designed to improve accuracy and precision while PC gaming. While resting on your gaming desk, the design is highly pleasing. It also gives you complete freedom of movement and does a fantastic cable management job. We loved how light and tiny it is, weighing only eight ounces.

Steelseries QcK Gaming Surface

For a good reason, nearly no one builds or purchases a computer without taking into account a mouse pad. Nothing is more aggravating than not having adequate space to move your mouse. SteelSeries QcK mousepads are created by a respected firm, are available in various sizes, and cost less than $20. It's challenging to find an accessory that will improve a gaming experience for such a small expenditure with that level of simplicity and for such an affordable price.

Seagate Games 8TB External Hard Drive

Do you require extra space? The Seagate Games Desktop Hard Drive boasts 8TB of storage space, enough to hold over 200 games, and the two front-facing USB 3.0 ports make charging and connecting gaming controllers and mobile devices a breeze. In addition, Game-save data and downloaded material can benefit from the extra capacity on the Game Drive Hub for Xbox.

DualShock 4 Controller

When Sony created the DualShock 4 controller, it wasn't resting on its laurels. While the design of Sony's controllers had remained relatively unchanged in prior generations, Sony went to great lengths to make the DualShock 4 more ergonomic, including thicker grips, sophisticated motion sensors, and a touchpad. The triggers are well contoured for long-term comfort, and some people will find the symmetrical arrangement more comfortable to use. Though the DualShock 4's battery isn't exceptionally long-lasting, it's simple to recharge with a micro USB cord.

Andaseat Jungle Ergonomic Gaming Chair

Long gaming sessions might cause significant back pain if you don't have the right chair. Ergonomic features include a high-back design that cradles your entire body, height-adjustable armrests, a headset pillow, and a lumbar pillow in the Andaseat Jungle. We've had a chance to try out the chair, and it's a huge improvement over sitting in an office chair. By tilting the chair back from 90 to 160 degrees, you can stretch out or find a comfortable position. In addition, its roller wheels make it simple to adjust the posture of your desk to find the sweet spot. The wheels move freely, but they're not unduly sensitive; you won't roll yourself around if you stretch.

SSS calls out to members; be vigilant against fixers and scammers

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Social Security System (SSS) is reminding all members and employers to protect their personal information and be vigilant against fixers and scammers following the increasing reports on fraud incidents.

“We are deeply concerned with the increasing number of fraud victims who are mostly our members. That's why we constantly remind them not to patronize these individuals. Never share your SS Number, My.SSS login credentials and other personal information with individuals who claim to be SSS employees because these will be compromised and used in illegal activities,” SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Aurora C. Ignacio said.

SSS further warns the public against joining Facebook Groups, offering assistance on various online transactions for a fee. SSS offers free services and doesn’t charge from its members except for Unified Multi-purpose ID Card (UMID) replacement. These groups are considered illegal and unauthorized as they could be data mining accounts used to extract an individual’s personal information.

“We also reiterate that SSS shall not be held accountable for any transactions once the member is found to have connived with the fixer. This act is considered a violation R.A. No. 11032 or the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act of 2018 as well as R.A. 11199 or the Social Security Act of 2018. Hence, we strongly advise our members to coordinate with legitimate SSS branch personnel only. Aside from that, E-centers are also available in SSS branches where they can be assisted by our member service representatives. We also made our My.SSS Portal and SSS Mobile App user-friendly which they can easily navigate and proceed with their online transactions.” added Ignacio.

As part of SSS’ initiatives to curb these illegal activities, social media posts and accounts were taken down in coordination with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group. This is an ongoing operation since these accounts are evident in social media accounts. Sending your complaints will provide notable information which will help the authorities to track them. Rest assured that the SSS shall penalize these fixers/scammers to protect the interests of our members and employers.” Ignacio concluded.

Concerned citizens and victims may report fixers/scammers to the Special Investigation Department (SID) through email fid@sss.gov.ph and telephone number (02) 8924-7370.

KathNiel fans lambasts Xian Gaza for spreading fake news about Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla and Barbie Imperial

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Waking up with this issue about Xian Gaza attacking KathNiel with his so called “may alam ako” like WTF siya talaga. Spreading fake news?

Xian Gaza's obsession with Barbie Imperial is so disturbing. Leave the girl alone. Xian Gaza, the greatest clout chaser. Being a Maritess is not something to be proud of.

Including Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla in your gossip? Talaga ba Xian Gaza?? KathNiel pa talaga. I'm waiting for them to sue you.

What's with his obsession over established women? When you prey on someone else's life over the guise of having fun, you are the worst kind of person. I think it's because Barbie does not want anything to do with Xian. He needs to leave Barbie Imperial alone and stop being bitter. hes literally harassing the woman online and some of you shamelessly find it funny.

Aren't Xian Gaza's actions recently against Barbiee Imperial can be deemed as cyber bullying? Now he is spreading rumors against Daniel Padilla. These kind of acts should not be tolerated. File a libel case against this predator and hold him accountable.

Baka sa susunod i-link na yan kay Duterte just so he could ruin her reputation?

I don't know why there are people that have nothing to do in life but to drag someone down just for clout.

If he thinks that speading fake news about KathNiel can destroy them well, I want him to know that he's wrong and he messed with the wrong fandom.

Barbie Imperial is Magui's friend (DJ's sister). Kung wala kang magawang matino Xian Gaza, wag kang magkalat ng fake news. Isa kang sakit sa lipunan.

Xian Gaza is doing everything to promote his useless and shitty gossip app and gain attention, and use it as part of his dramas on becoming a billionaire.

Isyus nga pala yung app ni Xian Gaza, I-download ninyo tapos i-rate niyo ng 1 star! Deserve ng mga developers ng bagong trabaho!

I absolutely have no idea why we keep on entertaining Xian Gaza when clearly he is not trustworthy!

Tanga naman siguro maniwala kay Xian Gaza eh may record na siya oh.

Ang tanga niyo naman siguro kung maniwala kayo sa chismis niya without an evidence.

Admit that half of your mind believes Xian Gaza, but true KathNiel fans won’t bother. Sa lahat ba naman ng artista, si Kath at DJ pa talaga?

I know in my heart that Kathniel will last forever and no one can break that relationship.

He cannot break something that is sure and secure. Kathniel’s overflowing affection for each other is so healthy and strong that no amount of lies and gossip can ruin their relationship.

The audacity of Xian Gaza. He's too pakialamero, masawsaw, at attention seeker. Huwag KathNiel. periodt.

Fan or not, stop tolerating Xian Gaza's sh*ts and stop giving him a platform. Hindi okay 'yung nakikisali ka sa relasyon ng iba at naninira ng pagkatao dahil lang clout ang gusto mo.

Lahat naman ginagawa nyang Xian Gaza to be relevant. Scammer na nga, clout chaser at creepy pa.

Don't engage, block and report nyo na lang account nyan para di na maging papansin.

Ang maganda pong business ngayong 2022 ay: Mind your own.

I am toxic to many. I am a blessing to some. Many I healed. Few I hurt. I'm not perfect. I'm always wrong. But I will strive to be better. - Xian Gaza

AXA Asia and Africa Sponsors LPGA Golfer Yuka Saso, Winner of US Women’s Open 2021

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Partnership grounded in shared belief in confidence as the foundation of success

AXA Asia and Africa announced its partnership with Japanese-Filipina professional golfer Yuka Saso, winner of the 2021 US Women’s Open (USWO) and currently ranked #8 in the world. This marks the first time the brand has partnered with an Asian sports champion at the regional level.

The partnership was inspired by Yuka’s embodiment of AXA’s brand signature, “Know You Can”, which is rooted in the understanding that confidence is essential for people to successfully achieve their goals. She attracted global attention with her win at The Olympic Club in June of this year, tied for the recognition of being the youngest USWO champion of all time. The sponsorship also underlines AXA Asia and Africa’s commitment to celebrating women in sports, helping to support the development of Yuka’s career while raising awareness of gender inclusion through her inspiring story.

“Yuka Saso is someone we have always admired. As a young Asian female professional golfer of dual nationality, she has risen to the top through hard work, determination, and the tenacity to succeed. Today we are proud to partner with her in her journey to show all young Asian women that effort and self-belief can make anything possible, exemplifying how confidence can give one the capacity to go further,” says Gordon Watson, CEO of AXA Asia and Africa. “Her passion, authenticity and grounded attitude set her apart and we look forward to enabling her long-term development.”

AXA Philippines President & CEO Rahul Hora echoes a similar sentiment. “We are honoured to support Yuka Saso whose half-Filipino heritage definitely inspires a lot of our customers to apply the same resolve in achieving their goals. We look forward to this partnership with Yuka as we try to reach out to more people with our messages of self-belief and protecting what matters, such as health especially of women.”

The young athlete had a tremendous amateur career highlighted by wins at the 2018 Asian Games and 2019 Junior PGA Championship. Since turning professional in November 2019, Saso has continued her impressive form. In addition to her Major win, she recorded Top-10 finishes at 5 LPGA tournaments this season, and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The USWO win in June following a play-off was her breakthrough moment, and a testimony to her grit and mental toughness, which she credits to the support of her family.

“Having been in discussions with AXA since early this year, I am grateful for their interest in supporting me, which strengthened my confidence to perform,” says Yuka Saso. “Preparing for the US Women’s Open made me realise the difference it makes when you have a strong support network, and that has only become more true as I strive to stay grounded for the next stage of my career. Now, through our shared appreciation for the role of confidence and self-belief, I hope to be able to inspire other young women in Asia to achieve success in the world of sport and beyond.”

Saso is currently in Japan preparing for her third professional season and is planning to kick-start the LPGA campaign at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida, in January.

The collaboration with Yuka complements AXA’s existing portfolio of sport sponsorships, including a global partnership with Liverpool Football Club as The Official Training Partner, and with the NBA as Official Insurance Partner in the Philippines.
