An Informative Q&A on Latest in Enterprise Database Trends 2019

Wazzup Pilipinas!

When it comes to technology, trends come and go faster than we can think of it, but it is found that many concepts in terms of database management may stay longer in power, which has the ability to impact business organizations and integrate them. All the database admins and organizations want to stay updated with the latest or upcoming trends in database management to take the best advantage of it at the first point for better management of their business.

The top 2019 database trends can be listed as:

Databases which bridge between SQL and NoSQL

Cloud Databases and Platform as a Service (PaaS)

More focus on Security

Automation of database management

Lets review these in detail first.

Bridging the gap between SQL and NoSQL

As can see, the trend in database administration now is more versatility. Database solutions dont restrict to a single database, but instead of it, the overall structure bridge SQL and NoSQL by offer the best of both worlds.

Cloud databases / PaaS (Platform as a Service)

Developers are now largely pushing their enterprises into the cloud and weigh their trade-offs with private and public clouds. They know how to effectively migrate to cloud services and coordinate with them based on their existing infrastructure. In terms of database administration also, the cloud offers many opportunities and benefits. Shifting to the cloud doesn't need to compromise on the organizational priorities. Instead, it is all about adding more products and services for the overall growth of the organization and to meet the business goals.

More security oriented

Data security is not a new trend, but increasing events of database breaches further reiterates the need for more secured database administration measures. For this, businesses tend to work hand-in-hand with the IT security partners in order to ensure that all your enterprise information is kept safe. Database administrators need to work closely with the security team in order to reduce the internal weaknesses of an organization which make your business data vulnerable.

Automation

Another emerging trend in terms of database management is the process of automation. Automation makes database administration much simpler in terms of patching, provisioning, upgrades, maintenance, updates, and also in terms of smoothing the project workflow. In fact, as RemoteDBA.com points out, for the time being, automation trends seem to have confined usefulness as the database management still requires a fair human intervention to succeed.

An expert Q&A on database management trends

Q: Given the enterprises are becoming more and more budget conscious, how security can be of concern over the cost?

One major threat raised by the majority of the database administrator in terms of operational data management is the risk involved. On choosing a vendor, from the entire SME to corporate, the primary concern is about the reliability of the vendors. Security capabilities of the provider are critical in terms of making a choice.

We now read stories about firms who suffered financial losses due to their database being compromised, which not only end up in the business loss but also impair their reputation and reliability. Compared to the downsides of data infiltration, the cost of data security is fully worth, and any savings one may gain from choosing the cheapest solution may ultimately end up in additional cost in terms of security breaches.

However, with the increasing demand, the database cloud costs are largely getting standardized across the global market, even though the server-less mode of delivery as offered by FaunaDB Cloud, etc. are disrupting it. The major database vendors now differentiate their solutions based on their capacity to mitigate risk, availability, consistency, security, productivity, and durability.

Q: More people prefer open source data solutions. So, what are the benefits of it?

The shift in open source database management model is so intriguing to the businesses. As adoption is now moving aggressively on to the cloud, the old model of service and support is diminishing now. In this case, also, it is more about risks. Users now don't tend to choose a database which will need support. They are looking for databases which work without fail all the times at any environment. These are called self-managing systems which are just coming up in the cloud, which delivers a "no-ops" experience than the existing DevOps model.

Customers tend to go for open source databases as they dont largely trust the vendors and off-the-shelf solutions to meet their unique requirements. In this model, they have the choice to manage their database in depth and also fix the issues all by themselves to avoid any sort of lock-in periods. Nobody wants a database company or the cloud providers to get involved in the database business.

Q: Even though it has significant benefits, why many of those stay away from open source data stores?

Even though it offers significant benefits, many of the products out there are still not so good, especially in terms of enterprise risk management and integration needs. The products which are existing for long and already matured are primarily based on the legacy architectures, which may create some operational overhead to the administrators on migration. The most advanced ones made for the multi-cloud environment are much immature now. In case of mission-critical workloads, the customers may have to work with trustworthy vendors irrespective of a licensing model.

One unique way to work on this issue is by using managed cloud services. It will leave the operational overhead to the vendor instead of making it the customer's burden. Those systems which still remain proprietary as AWS will further modify open-source products which they build upon so that the customer is locked into the code and the infrastructure. Databases based on public cloud are mainframe model, and AWS is said to be the new Oracle in DBA.

As we can see, the major differences between the conventional and cloud-based databases primarily come down to the risk vs. overhead. Corporate of the coming years are least interested in things which impact the correctness in terms of data recovery and transactions. They have a focus on productivity and enterprises are largely willing to invest more in terms of getting new features and reducing the risk down the scale.

Chill-axing at Bintan Lagoon Resort in Indonesia

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Indonesia, “The Emerald of the Equator” is a very popular country to visit as it is among the three countries easily accessible from each other. In our case, our gateway through one of its island resorts is from Singapore.

"Terimah Kasi", "hati hati", just some of the words that we learned when we visited for the first time the country Indonesia, meaning “thank you and take care” respectively.  It was my better half’s birthday present to me. I and my husband got married in the year 1995, so to be exact it was also our 23rd Wedding Anniversary. My feeling was melancholy because my children didn't come with us, however, glad because I enjoyed our out of the country getaway.

Sometimes, a husband and wife should also have moments of their own, temporarily away from their children. Besides my kids are already all grown-up.

This is to make their relationship grow fonder. According to Mingon McLaughlin, "A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” I am fortunate having my family together through thick and thin which makes my life complete and meaningful.

Bintan Lagoon Resort is a five-star island resort in Indonesia. Our stay there for three days and two nights was so relaxing. I and my husband arrived there on November 11 at around five o’clock in the afternoon, coming from Singapore and travelled to the island via ferry from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Aside from a resort staff with the placard containing the name of my husband, and bringing a golf cart to exclusively fetch us, while the rest of the visitors rode the bus,
we were also welcomed by Indonesian cultural dancers at the hotel lobby, and followed by lemongrass welcome drinks and cold towels from the friendly resort staff. Truly a VIP welcome for borh of us.

The reception area is quite spacious and awesome. There is an elevated area where lots of sofa sets are being arranged and seem inviting every guest that arrives to sit down and relax for a while before checking in at their rooms. Later, we were given our spectacularly classy room that will be our temporary home for three days and two nights. I most especially loved the comfy bed plus the spacious and elegant bathroom.

I was surprised when my husband opened the room door, because I saw beautiful flowers scattered around the bed with a towel shaped like a well and an elephant. On the table was a slice of cake with the “Happy Birthday” written on it. My heart melt with joy with what I saw, it was really a surprise for me since it was a bit early for a birthday greeting. My birthday is still on the 13th. Because of this, I fell in love again with my better half, and would like to thank the resort for the warm gesture of greeting me in advance of my natal day.

In the evening of the same day, we had our dinner in Nelayan Restaurant, a Japanese restaurant inside the resort. We were treated as very important persons (VIP), pampered with recommendations of their best dishes for our budget enough to feed royalties. We will share the details on a separate blog post. For the meantime, look for the videos all over our official Wazzup Pilipinas Facebook account.

Our second day in Bintan Lagoon Resort was a lot more exciting, after a filling breakfast at Fiesta buffet restaurant, and a quick tour of the resort to see the different amenities and accommodation options, we got to visit different areas of the island through the guidance of a kind hearted driver and tour guide in one.

Our first visit of our Heritage and Eco Farm tour package sponsored by IndoBintan Tours and Travel was at Safari Lagoi, then followed by visits at a Chinese Temple, Muslim Temple, Public Beach, and culminating at a late seafood lunch feast at one of the restaurants located within Bintan Mangrove. We will share the detailed stories of our tour on a separate blog post.

Our tour guide brought us back to Bintan Lagoon Resort where we had late dinner of their best pizza, burger and coffee at Terrace Sports Bar. But that was only after we took a dip in the huge main pool of the resort which almost feels like we have it all for ourselves since there were only a few people also hanging out at the pool area.

Our third and last day in Bintan was equally awesome, since we got to try some if the activities included in our Chillax package - the chance to drive their All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) through a jungke path, ride on a Ninebot Segway at their Leisure Center, shoot arrows at the Archery area near where we also tried to hit golf balls at the Driving Range.

Honestly, we were already rushing the activities but unable to do the rest of the packaged activities like the water sports which includes the jet ski, and other complimentary activities including billiards, gym, and practically all other ball and board games available at the resort.

We ended the activities with another filling lunch at Haskell's restaurant beside the golf course. Got to catch them at a time when they were doing photo shoots of their dishes, so we had an opportunity to get a look of the other dishes, aside from those we ate.

The Chillax package we mentioned on Chapter 1 of this series was among the 2 To Go Packages - an all inclusive 3days and 2 nights Chill-axing time which starts from IDR 4,042, 500 per person, which includes a De Luxe room for two, the round-trip ferry service, complimentary breakfast at Fiesta, lunch and dinner credits for two at IDR 262,500 and IDR 420,000 respectively, complimentary cocktail or mocktail drinks for two every night, plus other discounted rates.

https://www.bintanlagoon.com/bintan-packages/chillax-package/

Do we still need to emphasize how pampered we were during our stay at Bintan Lagoon Resort?

Isn't it obvious that we enjoyed our stay and would definitely want to go back in The Emerald of the Equator – Indonesia, since Bintan Island is just a small part of the said country. But if given a choice of destinations in the country, I would always pick Bintan Lagoon Resort again, and highly recommend it to everyone. Not to exagerrate, but our stay at Bintan Lagoon Resort was undoubtedly a very memorable experience.

Investing in New Health & Safety Software for Cinemas

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Cinema health, safety and security is something you cannot take lightly. As a cinema owner or manager it is your responsibility to ensure your cinema staff and visitors can enjoy their big screen experience in a secure and comfortable environment.

Having a night out at the cinema to see the latest blockbuster film is often considered one of the safest forms of entertainment that a person can experience. However, just like any other public, leisure or entertainment facility, there are risks involved.

It is your job as cinema manager to ensure that your audience members can be rest-assured that you have put in place stringent health and safety procedures to protect them. It is important to take every step possible to comply with all current health and safety laws, and that you and your cinema staff follow best practices with regard to everyone's safety, both on and off the cinema premises.

Protecting your cinema staff

There is current Health and Safety legislation that applies to all work activities in the UK. This legislation applies to all staff regardless of them being UK nationals, foreigners or unpaid volunteers. As a cinema operator or manager, you cannot delegate your legal duties under current health and safety laws. This means that you must do the following to comply with current legislation:

· Assess and manage risks
· Define responsibilities and duties
· Have a system for managing health and safety
· Regularly review the process and procedures for managing risk

As an employer, you are required to have a robust health and safety management system in operation to help reduce or completely eliminate risks to your staff and anyone needing to carry out work on your premises, such as cleaning, repair and maintenance staff.

The size and complexity of your cinema operation will affect your health and safety management system, so you need to have a very flexible and user-friendly Health & Safety Software Management system in place that will allow you to review update and amend your H&S policies as and when needed.

Risk assessment and managing risks

The area of risk assessments is one of the most fundamental parts of successfully managing a cinema. You will not only need to conduct risk assessments for your cinema employees, but you will also need to conduct risk assessments for the cinema audience, which can present a whole different set of risks than your staff face.

You will need to take an in-depth look at all of your staff activities and assess what hazards are present in their day to day duties. You must also work out what risks your cinema audience is being exposed to when experiencing these hazards. Finding ways to reduce, control or completely eliminate risks will be your top priority here.

Keeping track of your health and safety policies and procedures with regard to staff members and cinema audience members will need to be generated separately and recorded separately. You can do this more successfully by using a cutting-edge health and safety software solution, such as the one created by Blue Lemon Health & Safety Software.

With this H&S management software in place you will be able to easily manage such tasks as:

· Create templates for common Risk Assessments
· Record Risk Assessments by site and by department
· Set review frequency for Risk Assessments
· Log all hazards for each Risk Assessment
· Log hazard severity, likelihood and risk rating
· Add control measures for each hazard
· Add actions for each hazard to reduce severity, likelihood & risk rating
· Review historical changes to all Risk Assessments
· Download and print Risk Assessments in a PDF format

Our flexibly software can be perfectly tailored to suit the needs of your cinema health and safety management. Contact our friendly staff to discuss your needs. For Professional health and safety software for cinemas, click here. We are here to help!

In a bid to deliver the latest technology to its customers in the Philippines, Lenovo, a global leader in PC and smart devices development, is announcing the launch of a portfolio of devices featuring Intel® Optane™ memory technology. It is designed to bring greater efficiency and a more powerful experience to all Filipinos customers.

Intel Optane is a system acceleration solution found in 8th Generation (or newer) Intel Core Processors that boosts a computer’s responsiveness to end-user requests, including launching applications, finding and moving large files, and even loading levels in video games. It is designed to store commonly used data and programs closer to the processor. The system can access information more quickly with improved overall system responsiveness.

Official benchmarking results have shown the technology to be delivering up to 65 percent faster gameplay and up to 5x faster web browsing.

“With the new range of devices that features Intel Optane technology, Lenovo users can now complete tasks significantly faster with shorter wait time than before. This is a huge boost in work efficiency and will allow students as well as working professionals greater productivity to achieve much more. In addition, the technology provides gamers a near-uninterruptible gaming experience, allowing them to fully immerse into their games,” saidLenovo Philippines Country General Manager Michael Ngan.

Ngan also notes the cost-effectiveness of Intel Optane devices; its abilities allow HDD (Hard Drive Disk) systems to run nearly as fast as devices with expensive SSDs (Solid-state Drive), removing the need for users to upgrade.

The technology is now available on Lenovo’s latest product range that runs on Intel’s 8thGeneration processors and upwards, including the following:

● Legion Y530-15ICH – with 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8750H processor; PHP 78,995

This partnership with Intel is specifically aimed at providing end users across demographics with powerful devices that deliver high performance in every task. Lenovo is expected to release other products across its consumer, commercial, and enterprise lineups with Intel® Optane™ to make the technology’s benefits more accessible to the public.

“Be it at work or play, slow loading time can impact user experience. In more serious cases, it can lead to decreased productivity and revenue loss for businesses. Our partnership with Intel aims to help users avoid these unnecessary problems, by providing a seamless and near-uninterruptible experience to all Lenovo users,” said Ngan.

Intel Optane-powered Lenovo devices are available in major electronics stores.

2nd Tranche of Excise Not for 2018 Oil Stocks

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi on Thursday (27 December) enjoins oil industry players to empty first their 2018 oil inventories before applying the second round of the excise tax to petroleum products for 2019.

The DOE, in close coordination with the Department of Finance, the Bureau of Customs and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, devised a mechanism to closely monitor existing oil inventories following the implementation of the second tranche of Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law on 1 January 2019.

“We are ready to implement the second tranche of TRAIN, which imposes additional excise taxes to various commodities like petroleum products by New Year,” Sec. Cusi said.

Sec. Cusi explained, “We have to ensure the proper implementation of the second tranche of Train, because the new collection will be used to support our ‘Build Build Build’ programs, free tuition fee and medical assistance for our kababayans.”

The energy chief emphasized, “With the imposition of the additional excise taxes, we are stringently looking at the 2018 inventories of oil companies in order to protect consumers from unjust trading and profiteering once the second tranche is operationalized.”

“The sale of old stocks, referring to the remaining balance of the inventory ending 31 December 2018, which was not covered by the second tranche of excise taxes should not be collected from the consumers. Otherwise, it would be a violation of the law- not only administrative penalties like closure of the establishment will be imposed, but also the criminal penalty of large scale estafa,” Sec. Cusi further said.

“We are confident that everyone will cooperate so that we will all have a prosperous new year for 2019,” Sec. Cusi concluded.

The DOE, together with its partners and stakeholders, provided mitigating measures to help consumers cope with the effects of TRAIN Law during its first implementation, such as fuel discounts through the corporate social responsibility and promotional programs, pantawid pasada, energy efficiency tips, rigorous monitoring of gas stations to ensure good quality and right quantity of petroleum products, among other measures.
