UPLABS Holds Annual National Biotechnology Summit 2018

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To continue its mission to raise awareness about biotechnology, the UP League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students (UPLABS), holds its annual National Biotechnology Summit (NBS), a four-day biotechnology awareness program, on March 5-9, 2018 at the University of the Philippines Los Banos.

This 2018, the National Biotechnology Summit, with the theme Turbulence: Treading the Water of Biotechnology, caters college students from different universities offering agriculture related courses to have the opportunity of strengthening their awareness and communication skills about the status of biotechnology in the country. The program will advance the delegates through different sets of activities such as seminars and workshops for better communication skills, community visit, and lab tours.

Seven universities all over the country, consisting of 25 delegates, participated in the program. To clearly introduce the delegates and their roles in the summit, at the same time, establish good relations among the participants, the event will start with two symposia, at the SEARCA Umali Auditorium, discussing “Biotechnology in the Context of the Philippines” and the “Regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms”. Before the day ends, the delegates will present their case studies related to the issues on biotechnology in the Philippines.

Different laboratory tours and activities will be presented to the participants the next day, including: artificial insemination in the Animal Science Cluster; wine-making and kimchi making in the Food Science Cluster; and, tour and simple hands-on laboratory experiments facilitated by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) and the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC); to broaden the delegates’ knowledge on the various fields of agriculture.

The last day will cover the Biotech Communications Training, at the IRRI auditorium, which is expected to enhance the participants’ creative approach on tackling ideologies and perspectives about biotechnology, through series of talks and interactive lectures. This will then be followed by a Community Visit, wherein the delegates will be introduced to Trace College, to apply and develop the techniques they acquired from the Biotech Communications Training.

Concluding the program will be the Social’s Night at the Makiling Botanical Garden intended to develop the bonds between the delegates, partner institutions, and the host organization (UPLABS) as to strengthen shared visions and principles towards a national alliance formation.

Having its first successful installment of National Biotechnology Summit last August 2016, this year’s event is expected to keep up with the organization’s mission to further raise awareness about biotechnology, starting with college students, in the most efficient and intimate way possible.

The event is made possible with the help of several institutions namely Biotech Coalition of the Philippines (BCP), Department of Agriculture- Biotechnology Program Office (DA-BPO), Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCCAARRD), ISAAA, Philippine Seed Industry Association Inc. (PSIA), Universal Robina Corp. (URC), Dupont Pioneer, Fisheries Biotech Center, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources- National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center (BFAR-NFFTC), Monsanto Philippines, PhilChema Inc., International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture- Biotechnology Information Center (SEARCA-BIC).

Tips To Save On Car Insurance

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Most people wonder why their car insurance premiums are so high. There are minor issues that you may not be aware of that make car insurance expensive. Here are some tips on how to save on car insurance.

First, avoid putting everyone on your policy. The higher the number of people,  the more it will cost. Name only regular drivers on your policy then add anyone else you want to when necessary.

Two, protect your no-claims bonus because it ends up cutting your car insurance cost in the end. However, the no-claims bonus varies for many people depending on different circumstances. This is why you must make sure you read your policy properly and understand all the percentages involved. Keep in mind that accidents caused by other drivers will most likely affect the no-claims bonus.

Three, you can increase your voluntary excess by agreeing to pay more in case of an accident according to Money Expert. If this is the case, the amount of premium will decrease. The advantage of this is if there is an accident and you are not at fault, the excess can be recovered. This option works best if you have a high-value car. Do not let the excess get too high, though. Know the best limit for the type of car you own.

Four, you can ensure that your car is secure. A car that has a lesser chance of being stolen will have you paying a lower premium. Invest in a good anti-theft tracking device and a state of the art alarm for the car. Your insurance supplier will check these when deciding on insurance rates.

Five, reduce your car's mileage. Your insurance provider will check your mileage when deciding how much premium you should pay. This is also affected by the age of the driver. If you have a lower mileage and you are over 40, then you will likely save on the insurance. Do not cook up numbers that are inaccurate as this can end up being disastrous. If you do not use your car to drive to work then you can choose a cover that is suitable for you and reduce the rate of your premium.

Six, beware of adding young and inexperienced drivers to your policy. This is especially disadvantageous if you have a big car or a higher powered one. A young driver means a higher premium rate. This does not however mean that you should go along and insure your child's vehicle in your name. There can be dire consequences from the insurance company.

Cruise Tourism Initiatives Pay Off as Arrivals Jump More Than a 100 Fold

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Philippine cruise ship arrivals posted unprecedented figures in the last 12 months capped by the simultaneous docking of cruise ships at the Manila’s South Harbor.

On Monday, the Manila South Harbor, managed and operated by Asian Terminals, Inc., registered the biggest number of cruise ships docked at the ports with four, namely, SuperStar Virgo of Star Cruises, Costa Atlantica of Costa Cruises, Amsterdam of Holland America Lines, and Silver Shadow of Silversea Cruises.

According to Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel R. Santiago, the continuous hike in cruise ship arrivals are testaments to the initiatives put into place by different government agencies like the PPA, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Transportation, among others.

“On the part of the PPA, we have been injecting so much effort to improve the cruise facilities of our ports particularly in areas like Puerto Princesa in Palawan, South Harbor and North Harbor in Manila, Bohol in the Visayas, and Currimao in Northern Luzon,” Santiago said.

“The more than 1000% increase in the number of cruise tourism passengers suggest that we are slowly reaping the benefits of those initiatives,” Santiago stressed.

“The direction of the current administration is to further harvest the fruits of global tourism efforts and PPA is continuing its efforts to make port facilities for cruise ships world class,” Santiago added.

Currently, PPA is carrying out several infrastructure projects in key areas to support the booming cruise industry aimed at developing international hubs for cruise liners like Davao, Bohol, Boracay, Cebu, Metro Manila, Puerto Princesa, Subic, and Zamboanga. These make up the nation’s major nautical cruise arteries. It has also lined up various port programs for the development of cruise terminals. These include the Ports of Puerto Princesa, Currimao in Ilocos Norte and Catagbacan in Bohol Province.

As of January of this year, cruise tourism arrivals registered  an increase of 1,952.82% to 9,156 passsengers from only 446 in January of last year. Of the total, more than half of the volume or 4,520 was recorded in PMO Northern Luzon in view of the regained interest of Star Cruises at the Port of Currimao as one of its cruise routes.

The other areas that posted positive cruise tourism arrivals include Coron, Boracay and South Harbor.

“PPA is really bent on equipping major cruise destinations with the minimum requirements to handle cruise ships and slowly put improvements thereon,” Santiago explained.

Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior Holds Balangaw Climate Justice Tour: Manila, Batangas, Guimaras, and Tacloban

Wazzup Pilipinas!

I had given the chance to sail and do boating in different ways. In and out of the country makes me feel always excited. Maybe this is my dry run to Its the ship party, volvo ocean race, USS aircraft carriers or ‎Harmony of the Seas Caribbean cruise maybe. Because I'm always up into extreme boat adrenaline and action adventures.

Reminds me of Water-world adventure, Perfect storm true tragic story and magical Life of Pi movies.  This is my 1st assignment with WP this year. When Ross told me about Rainbow Warrior world sail tour invite. I said yes with out knowing whats the advocacy behind that great sail boat tour.

February 18, 2018 about 2 weeks ago, Rein and Hsuan picked us up at from Roxas Boulevard near Coconut Palace via speed power inflatable Greenpeace boat. Because of the heavy boat-ship traffic in Manila Pier Harbor. The Rainwbow Warrior sail boat was anchored somewhere near the bay area.

I am in a feeling moment of shooting the next Bond action film. During that boat action travel moment - hearing those boat engines and cool sea breeze then salty splash on my nerves. It was delicious and exciting! I have different perspective before and after the 2 weeks sail.

I carefully observed whats happening inside the boat. The life and world that they enjoy while sailing compare to people living onshore. There's no definite schedule there's only tentative or ETA because there's a lot of things to be considered.

Like the condition of the boat, sail, speed, sea routes, ocean traffic, weather, coastguards, ports, sea waves and then the direction of the wind. Now I understand why Abi didn't gave me a specific tour travel hourly and daily itinerary because its always tentative. Technically we were in Netherlands while inside the ship according to the female Captain Hettie.

The Scandalous Wazzup Pilipinas Iconic Shout-Out!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

So we got a report from a reliable source that a writer for Rappler and INQUIRER.net (or was it the printed newspaper) did not like it when we asked some people to do the Wazzup Pilipinas iconic shout-out at an event we attended

We don't really care because the people we ask to do the shout-out, LOVE it! We get a lot of smiles and laughter everytime we get to do the shout-out with them. Who do we listen to? Of course, the people we interview.

We even get requests from people to let them do the shout-out even before we get the chance to ask them. That's how they adore the shout-out. Why because it makes them part of the Wazzup Pilipinas overloaded experience. An opportunity to be in a video where they proudly call out our brand.

We were once approached by a top official from the Department of Tourism and commended us with "Ang galing!" A publication owner and editor even comnented with "kakaiba" and said we are doing the future of media interviews.  A publicist even asked us to do it with their VIPs. The Marketing peeps of companies eagerly joined in to do the shout-out, and another online publication emulated our style after witnessing how we do it at an event where both of us were invited to attend.

"Wala pong harangan ng style at diskarte." Respect each other's craft. We're not unique in doing shout-outs, so we were surprised of the reaction of this so called writer.

It should never be our fault if our shout-out was heard while they were interviewing. Just as how we patiently wait for our turn when trad media get first dibs on the interview opportunities even when they arrived late.

Kami ba ay umaangal kapag binibigyan ng priority ang trad media to interview the VIPs? Pero kadalasan umaalis naman sila agad dahil ang habol lang ay yung celebrity or VIP interview at di pinapansin halos yung actual event. Most of the time blurred o di pa pinapakita yung actual brands. At ang interviews pa nila ay walang kinalaman sa event, product or service na endorsed ng celebrity.

Members of trad media have to accept the reality that online media or bloggers are here to stay and even dominate the scene (notice how trad media even comes out with news that originated from online or the Internet) if only provided with the same financial budget or influence brought about by the "big" people who run trad media outfits. We know they prioritize business and their profits first since they do rarely come out with news that attacks their sponsors, investors or advertisers. Or they angle their stories to not directly affect their "friends" from different industries.
Thus, it is better to work with and not against bloggers, or vloggers. People prefer to hear the news from reliable sources and not from those burdened with avoiding to touch sensitive issues surrounding their clients.

Please do not try to make bloggers follow the same rules as trad media. Otherwise, we won't be different anymore. It is our creativity and uniqueness that make us stand out among the rest. It is our imperfections that make us more real. Believe it or not, It is our wrong grammar, our low quality photos, our lack of access to special events limited to trad media, which makes us more credible reflections of what's really happening among the common people. We don't mind if some hate us as long as there are many who love us.

Reece McLaren Keeps Winning Focus Intact Despite Change of Opponent

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Despite the recent change of opponent in his return to the ONE Championship cage on 9 March, Filipino-Australian dynamo Reece “Lightning” McLaren keeps his sights on having his hand raised in triumph.
McLaren was originally penciled to challenge Adriano Moraes for the ONE Flyweight World Championship in the main event of ONE: VISIONS OF VICTORY, but the Brazilian champion pulled out of the contest due to an injury.
ONE Championship found a late replacement in Malaysia’s Gianni Subba, who was supposed to duke it out with former world title contender Danny Kingad on the same card that is set to take place at the newly-renovated Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 26-year-old resident of Gold Coast, Australia admitted that there was a tinge of disappointment when he received the news that Moraes was forced to withdraw from the championship clash.
I was excited about my bout with Adriano Moraes because it would have been a clash of two best flyweights that are entering their primes. However, there are circumstances that are beyond our control. It is what it is,” McLaren said.
Last November on the undercard of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines, McLaren recreated himself as a flyweight, making his presence felt in the weight class immediately against top contender Anatpong Bunrad.
With a mere eight seconds remaining in the very first round, McLaren caught Bunrad in an anaconda choke and then transitioned into a D’arce choke to force the tap.
Based on the impressive outcome of his flyweight debut against Bunrad, McLaren was awarded with a shot at the division’s top prize.
Even though he lost his opportunity to vie for a world title for the second time in his professional career, McLaren took the situation in stride and wished Moraes a speedy recovery.
“I am slightly disappointed, but it is safety first. If I was the one sick or injured, I would not compete either, so I hope he recovers fast and gets back on track,” he stated.
With Moraes out of the picture, McLaren turns his attention to Subba, who has been a household name in ONE Championship’s flyweight division, facing the likes Eugene Toquero, Saiful Merican, Anatpong Bunrad, Riku Shibuya and current ONE Interim Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio.
“Gianni Subba is my new opponent now, and I need to adapt quickly to his style. But our game plan is still the same, and I will execute that on 9th of March,” he declared.
A winner of six of his last seven bouts, Subba is a seasoned athlete with a stellar 9-2 standing in his young career.
Furthermore, five of Subba’s nine wins have come either by submission or by crowd-pleasing knockout.
McLaren expects Subba to leave everything on the line as the Malaysian standout is driven to elevate himself in the upper echelon of ONE Championship’s 61.2-kilogram weight class.
“I see this match as a very exciting one because I know that Gianni Subba is a well-rounded martial artist. He is hungry because I know he wants to be in my position,” he explained.
The stakes are incredibly high for McLaren, unveiling that he is preparing himself to be in the best shape of his life against Subba at ONE: VISIONS OF VICTORY.
McLaren knows that a convincing win over a division mainstay like Subba will leave no doubt that he is the rightful contender for the ONE Flyweight World Championship title.
“I am not taking him for granted, which is why I am completely focused on my upcoming bout. This is a dangerous game we play, and we cannot underestimate anybody. I need to be at my absolute best. I will do my best to ace my test this March 9,” he ended.
