BDO Wins Best Retail Social-Media Banking Experience for 3rd Straight Year

Wazzup Pilipinas!

BDO Unibank was conferred with the Best Retail Social-Media Banking Experience award by Hong Kong-based financial publication The Asset during the Asset Triple A Digital Awards 2017, a recognition the bank has received for the third straight year.

The prestigious award was anchored on the Bank’s “Kabayan Initiative,” a plan aimed at establishing an interactive communication channel with its Kabayan clients—composed of Overseas Filipinos (including seafarers) and their respective beneficiaries—through social media.

The Sy-owned universal bank currently has multiple digital touchpoints by which clients can utilize to communicate or transact with the bank. Among these include online banking, mobile banking, and electronic banking channels, as well as a dedicated website and an official Facebook account.

For Facebook in particular, BDO has actively used this platform as a digital marketing channel wherein clients can access information about the bank's products, services, current promos, and other finance-related topics.

BDO launched its official Facebook page in 2014 to provide an avenue for current and potential clients to give their feedback about the bank, and for BDO to gather such information to further improve its products and services.

In less than a year after its launch, the BDO Facebook page caught up with the Facebook pages of other banks and soon became number 1 in terms of total number of followers and engagements, registering more than one million followers by end-2015.

To date, the BDO Facebook has around 3.3 million followers.

Soon thereafter, BDO launched the BDO Kabayan Facebook page to address a large market segment which was underserved at that time in terms of digital servicing—the Overseas Filipinos. Through the BDO Kabayan Facebok page, the bank was able to get in touch with its Kabayan account holders in different parts of the globe in a more targeted and customized manner.

#WRITENOW at Storywriting School!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We all know that literature has made numerous contributions to our world, from the prehistoric ages to the greatest events in history up until the end of time. It has served many roles, including being the threshold of reform in societies, documentation of the greatest events in history and even as simple and entertaining as telling the villagers a great story over the campfire. Literature has lived on and will continue living on because nature has blessed us people with this innate capacity to be storytellers.

From our unique and vibrant experiences came word-of-mouth explorations to letters of travelers and biographies of the renowned, to the contemporary comic books and novels of all genres, humans have grown to be such skilled storytellers, proven by the masterpieces and classic tales that strike our minds and hearts up to this day.

Thus, we have been all the more motivated to refine this craft called storytelling. Ergo, platforms like Storywriting School aim to allow storytellers of all ages to unleash their creativity and train aspiring writers whether it be through short stories, sci-fi, fantasy, crime fiction, and the like without the financial limitations.
And so, at Fully Booked Greenbelt 5, Storywriting School's program #WRITENOW, with Palanca award-winning playwright and author Joachim Emilio "Joem" Antonio, is offering seminars all geared towards storytellers.
Last May 5, 2018 11am-6pm, at Greenbelt 5, Makati, we attended How to Write Sci-Fi/Fantasy where Dr. Joem Antonio talked about everything from pre-writing, outlining, characterization, actual writing and post-writing.

At the start of the seminar, we were given these note cards and name tags. Three tables were full of eager participants who all shared their expectations regarding the topics of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy seminar. We were also free to ask if we had any clarifications or inquiries.

Students ranged from children to grown writers, all willing to learn about how to give structure to our ideas and gain tips on worldbuilding, what to keep in mind and actually writing our stories. Dr. Joem Antonio also emphasized on the powers of questioning and avoiding the so-called writer's block by simply writing things down whenever we have the luxury of doing so. After Dr. Joem had shared some lessons about Sci-Fi/Fantasy writing, we had a lot of exercises to put the writing lessons into application.

We also talked about topics like being naturally good at making connections and being innate storytellers through our own experiences and observations.

Not only is the instructor an award-winning and determined writer and playwright but also a jovial and approachable instructor when it comes to writing, especially after the end of the workshop when some participants were more comfortable to share their own inquiries regarding Sci-fi/Fantasy storywriting.

A week later - Last Saturday, May 12, 2018, still at 11am-6pm, we writers got to learn about crafting our own Crime Fiction stories. The class was surprisingly comfy yet effective and entertaining. Once again with Dr. Joem as our instructor, we discussed and shared our insights about characterization and setting, how all the characters play a crucial role when it comes to structuralizing their own to-do-lists in their outlines in order to construct the story's overall plot.

Seeing some unfamiliar faces, I arrived to see these new crime-fiction related terms - all pivotal to the creation of intriguing ideas and story prompts in a matter of minutes. The participants were soon geared for an exercise in composing their own unique story prompts as well.

Dr. Joem Antonio had also revealed that he is a professor of Literature and Theatre Arts at University of Asia and the Pacific and teaches fiction writing at Storywriting School. He's also the main proponent of Compact Shakespeare, a series dedicated to making abridged versions of our favorite Shakespeare classics.

So far, I can describe these Saturday #WRITENOW workshops as interesting, effective and hands-on exercises that will truly develop one's writing abilities through helping them put these lessons into practice not long after learning them. They are fun, challenging and fit for a wide scope of writers, may they be youngsters or hobbyists or professional writers who want to refine their storytelling abilities.

Through each of these captivating 6-hour crash courses, writers young and old got to unleash their skills in both imagining and fleshing out the elements of crime fiction. Complete with techniques, examples, and good ol' friendly writing advice, this was an effective and amazing class for aspiring writers.

For more information about the instructor, visit: http://www.joemantonio.com/home

Stay tuned for topics like Children's Stories, Storytelling and Narration.

Philippine Cinema Continues to Go Global with Cannes 2018

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In continuing its efforts to promote Philippine Cinema in the international scene and create more opportunities for Filipino producers to find international collaborators, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) once again leads the Filipino delegation to Cannes International Film Festival and Marche Du Film from May 8-19, 2018 in Cannes, France. Cannes International Film Festival, with its counterpart film market Marche Du Film, is one of only three A-list international film festivals in the world and gathers the best and most relevant film industry figures around the world.

Festival de Cannes

The prestigious film festival will be featuring “Judgement,” film by Raymund Ribay Gutierrez at the Short Film Competition. Competing with world-quality films, Judgement is the story of Joy, a mother of a 4 year-old girl, who finally decides to file a case under domestic violence against his abusive husband, Dante. Gutierrez’ other short film “Imago” was also nominated for Best Short Film in Cannes Film Festival in 2016

Also, a special feature will be the premiere of the restored version of the 1982 French-Filipino film Cinq et la Peau (Five and the Skin) at Cannes Directors' Fortnight. The whole film was shot entirely in the Philippines starring Gloria Diaz, Bembol Roco, Philip Salvador and Joel Lamangan, directed by legend Pierre Rissien, and was featured in the Cannes' Un Certain Regard 36 years ago.

The film’s director, Pierre Rissien, whom they call the Man of Cannes passed away last May 5, 2018 days before he was supposed to introduce the film during Cannes Directors' Fortnight. He is a Cannes Adviser, an influential Cinephile and Cannes Film Scout before he died, and a known supporter of Philippine Cinema.

Award-winning Filipino short film director Carlo Manatad is also a participant at Cinefondation’s Atelier for its 14th edition. Manatad and his producer Armi Cacanindin are the only Filipino pair accepted in the reputable program with their project in development “Whether the Weather is Fine”. The same project was also awarded the Co-Production Award in last year’s TorinoFilmLab. L’Atelier provides participants access to international co-productions to accelerate the film’s completion.

Cannes Film Market (Marche Du Film)

For Marche, the FDCP is hosting a Philippine Pavilion which houses 18 Filipino production companies with contents and projects open for collaboration and international distribution. “Philippine Cinema is at its one hundred years and we are really excited because we get to bring the celebration to Cannes. Cannes has played such an important part in the promotion of Philippine Cinema worldwide, taking notice of our legendary filmmakers from Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal in the 70's to today's Brillante Mendoza Raymond Red, Adolf Alix and the many Filipino filmmakers making waves in the Festival. At the same time, Marche Du Film has been a great platform for our producers to be exposed to the world of global co-production and distribution. Because of that, we really want to maximize our annual participation especially this year to both the Festival and the Market,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Mary Liza Dino.

Short Film Corner and Market Screenings

The Philippines also have the following participants to the Cannes Short Film Corner -  Logro (Odds) by Kani Villaflor, Todas by Patrick Eugenio, Palabas (A Country in Moving Pictures) by Noel Escondo, Milagros by Pigeon X, Kadena (Shackles) by Arvin Belarmino, and Alaala (Memory) by Arjanmar Rebeta. This section more than screens the short films but also conducts meetings with professionals facilitated by experienced speakers, workshops and themed conferences which will increase the chances of short films being selected by international festivals, as well as revealing the filmmakers' talents to potential partners and diffusers.

As for Market Screenings which are open to all badge holders in the Festivals, Neomanila by Mikhail Red (PelikulaRED), Dormitoryo by Emerson Reyes (TBA Studios) , Nervous Translation by Shireen Seno (Cinema One Originals, Cinematorgrafica), Respeto by Treb Monteras (ArkeoFilms) and The Trigonal: Fight for Justice by Vincent Soberano (Cinefenio Productions) are set for exhibition.

Spotlight Country in the Cannes Producers Network

For the first time, the Philippine is going to be the Spotlight Country in the Cannes Producers Network. It is an industry event which facilitates connections between producers to help them boost their projects in development through a series of events designed to encourage international co-productions. With over 500 attendees from all over the world, producers will get to meet the best of the best. As a Spotlight country, the Philippines gets to showcase its most promising Filipino producers who are geared and ready for co-productions with international partners, namely Alemberg Ang (Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa, 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten, Ang Larawan), Armi Rae Cacanindin (Kusina, I’m Drunk I Love You, Jodilerks Dela Cruz, Employee of the Month), Pedring Lopez (Binhi, Nilalang, Dark Room), Sheron Dayoc (Halaw, Children’s Show, Women of the Weeping River) and Bianca Balbuena (That Thing Called Tadhana, Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis, Ang Panahon ng Halimaw). This can further jumpstart the country’s efforts to get content out to the world and create new ones with international partners. The Spotlight event will also be featuring Cannes Best Director 2009 Brillante Mendoza, Palm d’Or Short Film 2000 winner Raymond Red, and FDCP Chairperson Liza Dino as guests of honour.

Sandaan: Philippine Cinema Centennial Talks

Another way of FDCP’s celebration of One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema is its hosting of Sandaan: Philippine Cinema Centennial Talks which shares to the international community the journey and triumphs of the local cinema. For Cannes, there will be a 2-day panel on May 15-16, 3 PM at the Philippine Pavilion on Filipino films going to the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the opportunities for co-productions with the Philippines and using it as a film location for foreign productions through the Film Philippines program. Among the panelists will be Brillante Mendoza, Raymond Red, and producers Armi Cacanindin, Alemberg Ang, Bianca Balbuena, Sheron Dayoc, and Pedring Lopez.

Consortium Against Sexual Harassment in the Entertainment Industry

FDCP joined forces with Darpan Singapore and Southeast Asia Audiovisual Association by being the first country to enter the Consortium against Sexual Harassment in the Entertainment Industry. With the incredible movement of #MeToo in Hollywood and Europe, both partners believe that it is important that this culture of accountability and empowerment reaches Asia as well. During the signing event entitled You and #MeToo, Ms. Sreya Sen and Chairperson Dino committed to raise awareness, lobby for legislation and inspire a much-needed culture change in both Singapore and the Philippines and their respective film industries. They also aim to encourage other Asian countries to join the movement and push for collective action.
Festival de Cannes and Marche Du Film runs from May 8 to 19, 2018.

Kharun Atlangeriev Out to Shock the World in Debut Against Eduard Folayang

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Undefeated Russian prospect Kharun Atlangeriev is taking the most extreme gamble of his budding professional mixed martial arts career.
Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, Atlangeriev believes that great risks result to greater rewards as he has an opportunity to establish himself as one of the premier lightweights in ONE Championship.
The 25-year-old native of Dagestan, Russia is set make his promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner on Friday, May 18, squaring off with a prominent name in the organization’s 77.1-kilogram weight class.
Atlangeriev is slated to lock horns with former lightweight titleholder Eduard Folayang on the undercard of ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS, which takes place at the state-of-the-art Singapore Indoor Stadium.
“I am super excited to visit Singapore and put on a show,” he said. “I know that he is a former champion and an experienced competitor, but I have no pressure on me. The pressure is on him. It is going to be a wild night.”
A mere glance at both men’s records shows a sizeable gap in experience between the two as Folayang once held the prestigious ONE Lightweight World Championship and has shared the stage with the promotion’s notable figures such as Kotetsu Boku, Adrian Pang, Shinya Aoki and Ev Ting.
Moreover, Folayang is raring to put himself back into the world title picture after losing his lightweight crown to Martin Nguyen by way of second-round knockout in November 2017.
Although he praised the impressive background and the world-class talent of Folayang, Atlangeriev is confident in his own skillset as he steps into the ONE Championship cage for the very first time against the beloved Filipino superstar on Friday.
“To the common eye, it may be a mismatch on paper due to records and experience, but I am confident in my skills. I feel like this is my time to make myself known around the globe. Anything can happen, and I have the skills to finish him,” he stated.
Atlangeriev has an immaculate record in his mixed martial arts run, acing his 11 professional bouts with flying colors.
Known by the moniker as “The Predator” due to his intense demeanor inside the cage, Atlangeriev has gone the distance just once in his prizefighting stint as ten of his 11 career wins have come by way of finish.
“I have fought some crazy people in my career. I know what Eduard Folayang offers, and I know how he fights, and to be honest, I am not really afraid of anything. The only thing I am afraid of is me not giving my 100 percent, and that is pretty much it,” he warned.
Coming off a 22-second stoppage win over Andrey Kurbatov in December 2017 under the Octagon Fighting Sensation umbrella, Atlangeriev seeks to make an impact in his maiden ONE Championship appearance by defeating Folayang.
“I believe in myself more, I have more confidence, and I feel like I am where I am supposed to be. I always knew I had potential, and on Friday, I will show it,” he mentioned.
Even though he faces a tough test in the form of Folayang at ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS, Atlangeriev believes that he will make headlines by having his hand raised in triumph.
“I want a challenge. I want people to really think it is impossible for me to win because that is when I am going to show them wrong. I am here to shock the world,” he concluded.

Angela Lee, ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion, stated: “Coming back to Singapore ready to defend my title, it’s a familiar feeling. At the same time, it feels new to me, after everything. It’s like a new beginning. I am excited to put in the best performance of my life and remind the world who I am as a fighter, as a martial artist, and as a world champion. I have missed the competition, the lights, the spectacle, and everything that comes with it. I live for this.”

Mei Yamaguchi, ONE Athlete, stated: “Two years ago, Angela and myself put on a tremendous show for fans in Singapore, and we’re ready to do it again. I respect Angela as an athlete and as a person, but I’m ready to give this bout my all. I am not the same martial artist as I was two years ago. I’ve made some key improvements to my game and I am excited to show everyone what I have worked so hard for.”

Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, ONE Athlete, stated: “Competing in front of a packed arena, to an audience of millions around the world -- it was such a surreal experience for me the first time I stepped into the ONE Championship cage. I can still remember the feeling like it was yesterday. Thank you ONE Championship for the opportunity to compete for the world title, I am truly honored and will make everyone proud.”

Sergio Wielzen, ONE Athlete, stated: “Sam-A Gaiyanghadao is a legend in Muay Thai, and it is such an honor for me to be competing against him. I have so much respect for what he has done and what he has accomplished. But once that cage door closes, I am only focused on one thing and that’s winning this bout. I am prepared to do whatever is necessary to get the victory and become the first ONE Super Series world champion.”

Martin Nguyen, ONE Featherweight & Lightweight World Champion, stated: “Christian is a good kid and he has come a long way, but it is my time now. This bout is going to end only one way, and that’s with him finishing me or me finishing him. We are both explosive and skilled, so I don’t see this bout going the distance. I will defend my featherweight belt and prove to the world once again that I am the best in this division.”

Christian Lee, ONE Athlete, stated: “All my life, all the hard work I have put into training, all the fights, they have all led me to this moment right here. I have waited long enough for this title shot, and I am prepared to leave it all inside the cage this Friday night. I have learned and improved a lot since our last match. Things will end differently this time around. Martin is a tremendous athlete and a noble warrior, but I am coming to take away the belt.”

Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex, ONE Athlete, stated: “I am thrilled for the opportunity to compete in the ONE Super Series. Throughout my career, I have seen many opponents and had so many experiences. Now I am ready to take this next step into my career and compete under a new beginning. This is a chance for me to showcase my skills to the world, and to show fans the beauty of Muay Thai.”

21-year-old “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore is considered one of ONE Championship’s most outstanding athletes. She captured the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship with an awe-inspiring victory over Mei Yamaguchi in 2016, and has since then defended the title successfully on two occasions. Lee’s beautiful combination of elite striking and grappling has proven to be a potent formula for success, as she has remained unbeaten in her career. In the most recent bout of an impressive run, Lee dominated top contender Istela Nunes, showcasing her wide array of skills. She is widely-considered on a global scale to be one of the biggest names actively competing in the sport. She is set to defend her title next against Yamaguchi in a rematch.

35-year-old Japanese martial arts veteran Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi is a female atomweight standout and a former ONE world title challenger from Tokyo. She is the DEEP Jewels Featherweight Champion, and owns seven submissions and two knockouts in her 28-bout professional career. In 2016, Yamaguchi challenged Angela Lee for the inaugural ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship in an epic showdown that would later win multiple ‘Bout of the Year’ honors from international media publications. In her last outing, Yamaguchi thoroughly defeated Gina Iniong of the Philippines to win impressively by unanimous decision after three rounds. Yamaguchi is now set to take on champion Angela Lee in a highly-anticipated rematch.

34-year-old Sam-A Gaiyanghadao is a Muay Thai legend and multiple-time Lumpinee Stadium world champion who is regarded as one of the best strikers in the world. As a Muay Thai practitioner, Sam-A owns a record of 364-46-9, and was known for his strong defense and counter offense. An instructor at Evolve in Singapore and a member of the prestigious Evolve Fight Team, Sam-A made his first ONE Championship appearance last January against Joseph Lasiri in the first-ever Muay Thai bout inside the ONE Championship cage. Sam-A is set to lock horns with Sergio Wielzen, whom he will compete against for the inaugural ONE Super Series Muay Thai Flyweight World Championship.

Lion Fight Muay Thai World Lightweight Champion, Sergio “Samurai” Wielzen of Suriname is a Dutch-based martial artist training out of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. With a professional kickboxing record of 45-18-2, Wielzen has built a reputation as being an explosive striker with stunning knockout power. Despite being physically smaller than most of his opponents, Wielzen has won many of his bouts by knockout. He is also a former It’s Showtime 61MAX world champion. Wielzen is set to make his ONE Super Series debut opposite Muay Thai legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao.

29-year-old Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen is one of the most highly-regarded martial arts champions in the world. With an impressive 10-2 professional record, which includes three submissions and seven knockouts, Nguyen’s all-around skill set allows him to perform at the highest level of competition. All of Nguyen’s wins have come by exciting finish. Last November, Nguyen scored a scintillating knockout victory over the Philippines’ Eduard Folayang to become the first man in the history of ONE Championship to hold two titles simultaneously in different weight divisions, reigning as both ONE Featherweight & Lightweight World Champion. In his last bout, Nguyen figured in a historic showdown with ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano Fernandes in Bangkok. Nguyen now makes a quick turnaround however, jumping right back into action as he defends his featherweight title against Christian Lee.

19-year-old Christian “The Warrior” Lee, younger brother of reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, began his professional career on an absolute tear, railing off five straight victories by thrilling finish. He has impressed fans with his ability to seek out stoppage wins over top-caliber opponents featuring an exciting fan-friendly style. A former Pankration World Champion, Lee toppled Japanese veteran Kazunori Yokota in his most recent bout, winning via second-round guillotine choke to improve his record to 9-1. Riding an impressive four-bout winning streak with all four wins coming by finish, Lee is set to showcase his skills once more inside the ONE Championship cage. In his next bout, Lee has the chance to become a world champion when he challenges Martin Nguyen, the only man to ever defeat him, for the ONE Featherweight World Championship.

32-year-old Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex is one of the most recognizable names in the world of Muay Thai. Known by the moniker “The Boxing Computer” as a testament to his impeccable in-ring techniques, he has won numerous championships in his stellar kickboxing career, including the WBC Super Welterweight Muay Thai World Championship and the coveted Lumpinee Stadium World Championship. Yodsanklai will face Chris Ngimbi in his ONE Super Series debut.

DOTr, I-ACT Anti-Colorum Ops on Election Day Yields Dozens of Violators

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In support of Honest, Orderly and Peaceful Elections (HOPE), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (i-ACT) conducted anti-colorum operations in strategic points in Metro Manila during the Barangay Elections held yesterday, May 14.

A total of 91 Temporary Operators Permit (TOPs) and Ordinance Violation Receipts (OVRs) were issued to various public and private vehicles.

Meanwhile, five (5) jeepneys and one (1) UV express were also apprehended for out of line operations.

In the City of Manila, an enforcer from the Manila Traffic Parking Bureau (MTPB) tried to get in the way while a jeepney driver was being apprehended by i-ACT enforcers.

The efforts of the unnamed MTPB personnel though, turned futile as the instructions from Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Tim Orbos was to apprehend all violators regardless of their "padrinos".

"Wag pagbibigyan iyang mga iyan. Walang arbor-arbor dito. Magkakapahiyaan lang tayo pag pinilit ninyo," said Usec. Orbos.

Jeepneys bearing the signage of COMELEC were also flagged down as these were not authorized by the commission and as such, they will be meted with appropriate charges.

Days prior to the Barangay and SK Elections, DOTr Assistant Secretary for Special Concerns Eymard Eje, upon the instruction of Secretary Arthur Tugade, issued a memorandum which is aimed at filing appropriate fines and charges against operators and drivers of PUV's who will defeat the conduct of peaceful and orderly elections.

As observed in the conduct of operations, out of Line (colorum) PUV's were used to transport voters, some are believed to be flying voters.

These PUVs were being paid in as much as P1,000 to service voters of certain candidates.

“Ang mandato natin nakatuon sa panghuhuli ng mga colorum na pampublikong sasakyan na ginagamit ng mga pulitiko na panghakot sa mga botante tuwing eleksyon. Kung flying voter man o hindi ang pasahero nila, sabit sila kapag colorum o out of line ang biyahe nila,” Eje said.

Under the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) 2014-01, violators may be fined from PhP6,000 to PhP1,000,000 (depending on the type of vehicle) with a minimum impounding period of three (3) months and a possible blacklisting and/or revocation of the Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC).
