Despite Shouldering Double Duty, Rene Catalan Keeps Himself Laser-focused for Upcoming Bout

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Filipino martial artist Rene “The Challenger” Catalan has a unique predicament on Friday, 18 August as he will be dividing his time between being a cage competitor and acting as a chief cornerman.

Catalan will be sharing the ONE Championship cage with grappling prodigy Bu Huo You Ga of China on the undercard of ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS, which takes place at the iconic Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, one of Catalan’s younger brothers, Robin, will also be competing on the stacked card as he squares off with multiple-time Lumpinee World Champion and former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke later in the evening.

It will be the first time both family members are competing at the same ONE Championship event. Not only does he have to focus on his own match, but Catalan also has to deal with the stress of coaching his younger sibling to victory.

“There is pressure, definitely, both as a coach and as a competitor, As a coach, I am thinking about my athlete’s performances. And as a competitor, there is the pressure to win, and carrying Filipino pride on my shoulders,” he admitted.

Although ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS will surely be a busy night for Catalan, it also presents an opportunity to make some incredible memories as Catalan envisions a scenario where both he and his brother advance their professional careers by becoming victorious on the card.

“It marks the first time that I will compete alongside my brother. It’s exciting. I hope that we will walk away as winners of our respective bouts. It will cause a big family celebration,” he said.

Riding high on a two-bout winning streak, the 38-year-old Iloilo native will have the chance to extend his victory parade as he takes on Bu, who has won his last three outings.

A proud native of a hill tribe in West China, Bu has a formidable base as a national Greco-Roman wrestling champion and has built upon that by adding elements of Wushu-Sanda, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and traditional Chinese Kung Fu to his arsenal.

Most notably, Bu’s biggest achievement under the ONE Championship banner was when he was crowned as the ONE Hefei Flyweight Tournament Champion in July 2016.

With the aim to be a more versatile combatant than his Chinese counterpart, Catalan revealed that he worked extensively on his ground game in training camp.

“For this fight, I added more emphasis to my ground game. Even though I am coming off a win, I shouldn’t be complacent. I trained with the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the country to hone my grappling skills,” he bared.

While Catalan recognizes Bu’s potential, he believes that his seasoned background in combat sports will play a pivotal role in their three-round strawweight encounter.

“I may not have much experience in the cage, but I do have a rich background in Wushu-Sanda and boxing,” he explained.

“I still believe that my striking is better than his stand-up game. I am very comfortable in that aspect. If he wants to strike with me, it will be my pleasure,” Catalan added.

Catalan hopes that if he secures a decisive win over Bu, it will put him an inch closer to a date with Yoshitaka Naito for the ONE Strawweight World Championship belt.

“I really hope that ONE Championship will give me an opportunity to vie for the title in the future. This bout might be the door to a world title contest. I am coming in with a game plan, much like my opponent. If I cannot take it one way, I am going to take it in another. My goal is to win. I carry with me the pride of the Filipino people. I will do whatever it takes to win,” he stated.

CNN Philippines Presents: Malang Celebrates Life of the National Artist

Wazzup Pilipinas!

CNN Philippines tells the story of a national artist whose life, career and creations elevated the status of art and design in the country. CNN Presents: Malang is an ode to Mauro “Malang” Santos, the Filipino cartoonist, illustrator and painter whose illustrious career has produced a body of work that remains to be one of the pinnacles of modern Philippine art.

At 89 years old—and 70 years from his humble beginnings as a comic strip creator for a daily broadsheet in 1947—Malang passed away on June 10, 2017. His death left his remarkable works, first as an illustrator—as seen in his politically-themed cartoons Kosme the Cop and Chain Gang Charlie—and painter, when he started creating critically-acclaimed works on canvas such as Barrio Fiesta, commissioned for the FGI-Insular Life Building and is considered to be one of his best works.

CNN Presents: Malang posthumously surveys his life and his iconic contributions to local art, as told by members of Malang’s close circle. Hear never-before-heard narratives on the artist from his children Soler and Sarah, his grandchildren, Malang’s trusted staff, and renowned art patrons who have faithfully recognized Malang’s remarkable works of art.

Art patron Sari Ortiga, who owns The Crucible Gallery where Malang’s art is often displayed, says at one point in the special: “I think [Malang] was the most controversial artist of his time... He lived it, he breathed it, he created it. He was controversial in his crusade against the authenticity of the art… [It’s his one] legacy that we will never forget.”

Learn, UnLearn and ReLearn: Are Bloggers Required to Be Experts, or at Par with Journalists?

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Those new Chevening scholars from the media know better that even though they know a lot already and are experts already in skills like making Documentaries, they still are willing to learn more from other experts.

"Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme offers awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study for a master’s degree in any subject at any UK university." - Scholars4Dev

We believe that there are so many things that could be Re-learned or Un-Learned in order to improve oneself. They don't do it on their own. They look for ways to learn even if it means learning it from other people.

This is why many organizations still offer their services to even professionals because LIFE is supposed to be a never-ending learning process. Do not assume that everyone around you should know better, especially bloggers who mostly do not have formal training on covering events like how journalists do it.

Bloggers attend events for the experience. Although preferred, they should not be required to be experts when they attend events like an Italian Food Tasting. Don't expect them to know about Croxetti and other sophisticated or high-end Italian dishes, and then criticize them all over social media to prove some vague points. It was never their fault the event organizers decided to invite them at their event.

And for the other "well-respected" blogger to gossip about them, who did nothing to correct the mistakes of the "clueless" bloggers, we no longer believe you deserve the respect based from what you did. If we were you, we could have approached the other bloggers in a friendly way and told them right there and then that particular Italian dish is supposed to taste like that.

This reminded me about the story of a foreign restaurant owner about a top food blogger who criticized his authentic Buffalo Wings because of its taste. Unknown to the top food blogger, that is the actual authentic taste based from the original.

As we can see, most of us taste food based on our own preference, we do not really need to know the technicalities if we just want to share our own preference for food. Though it helps to be informed of how dishes are supposed to taste, you don't expect everyone around you should be as knowledgeable as you are.

Don't try to make bloggers like the well-trained journalists, broadcasters, and other members of trad media. They may opt to level up to that direction, but they are absolutely not required at all. There is a great reason why they are called bloggers. Don't try to make them something else other than people who find joy in experiencing what life has to offer.

Bear in mind that we are not trying to make this a bloggers-versus-trad media issue, it just so happens that the thread starter is a member of the media and people involved in the issue he raised are bloggers.
