Richard Corminal: An OFW Fulfilling a ​Longtime Dream to Compete in MMA

Every year numerous Filipinos leave their homeland in search for greener pastures abroad, with the goal of getting a decent job so as to provide their families with comfortable lives.

With the idea of better opportunities in other countries, many take the risk. In exchange for money, they trade separation from their family and loved ones, and often, even their dreams.

Richard Corminal is no different from a regular overseas Filipino worker because he gave up his dream to become a mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete in order to give his household a better life.

Corminal had always wanted to be an MMA fighter, more so as he watched the exciting sport on television during its renaissance in the early 2000’s.

“When I saw an MMA bout for the first time, I got hooked. It was exciting, and it’s something different. There are a lot of options to win and weapons to utilize,” he recalled. “From that moment on, I knew I wanted​ to be an MMA fighter.”

His obsession with MMA led him to learn the martial art of Muay Thai, which served as his basic foundation.

Corminal was on his way to becoming an MMA fighter when he was forced to leave the Philippines to work abroad to be his family’s breadwinner.

“It was a tough decision to make, but I have a family to support. They are my top priority. I chose to work abroad and try to give them a good life,” Corminal shared.

Corminal took the job of a Muay Thai trainer at MuayFit, which is one of the premier MMA gyms in Malaysia.

Slowly, Corminal relinquished his dream of becoming a professional MMA competitor and became content in being a Muay Thai instructor at MuayFit.

However, the gym proprietor whom he worked for took notice of his exceptional talent and gave him a new lease to revive and fulfill his dream.

“MuayFit gave me the chance to fulfill my dream to become an MMA fighter. I’m so grateful for that opportunity,” Corminal said.

Starting his MMA journey

When Corminal got into intensive training, it was not a walk in the park for him because there were numerous martial arts disciplines that he needed to master due to the multi-faceted aspect of MMA.

Even though Corminal bit the bullet with every test, the people around him did not repress to lend their helping hands.

Corminal trained with ONE Championship athletes such as Eric and Edward Kelly, who once worked as trainers at MuayFit and represented the Malaysian MMA training facility in their respective bouts.

​Moreover, his growth as a cage combatant was developed with the assistance of other Philippine MMA household names and MuayFit teammates like Rolando Gabriel Dy and Carlo Laurel as well as the father-and-son duo of Raysaldo and Fritz Biagtan.

“It was difficult as expected, but I wanted​ to be an MMA fighter so bad. I chose to endure. I kept on telling myself that pain is temporary. I just pushed harder every single day,” Corminal said about the grueling phase of his formation.

Corminal made his first professional MMA stint in October 2012, winning against an experienced Malaysian fighter by way of second-round stoppage.

Ever since his maiden foray into the sport, Corminal never looked back and cemented his position as one of the top prospects in the Southeast Asian region.

The 35-year-old Filipino lightweight standout currently holds a win-loss slate of 4-1, with all of his career victories to date coming by way of knockout.

His success in minor MMA leagues served as his footstool to be noticed by ONE Championship, which is widely recognized as Asia’s largest MMA organization.

Corminal is set to make his ONE Championship debut against Thai mainstay Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai in the co-headliner of ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM, which takes place at the 12,000-capacity Impact Arena in Bangkok Thailand on 11 March.

According to Corminal, being part of ONE Championship’s burgeoning roster of world-class athletes is the culmination of the hard work and dedication that he invested to be an MMA fighter.

“I am so happy. The feeling is like winning an MMA title. ONE Championship is the biggest promotion in Asia, and to be part of it, it’s truly an honor. Everything that I did in training is all worth it because I’ve made it here,” he stated.

If he previously only imagined to be an MMA fighter, now Corminal will see how far he has gone in the sport as he shares the ONE Championship cage with Wiratchai.

“I was only dreaming of​ this moment before. Now, I am here. I see my upcoming fight as a test and an opportunity to know my level as a competitor in this constantly-evolving sport,” he asserted.

Although it took years before he saw his dream turn ​into reality, Corminal chose to hold on to it.

“A dream doesn't become reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination and hard work. Keeps your dreams alive because all things are possible,” he ended.

Hinugyaw: Engineering Week 2017

In the spirit of instilling Engineering pride, Engineering Week (Eng’g Week) is the biggest and most awaited event of the College of Engineering. It has grown into a week-long celebration that students from within and even outside the college have always anticipated. Over five thousand Engineering students gather to participate in a variety of events ranging from simple games of chance to grand performances of talents and skills. This is also the time to unite the members of the Engineering community in this wonderful celebration.

This year, the theme of Engineering Week is Hinugyaw, which is inspired by Philippine Festivals. It aims to showcase Eng’g Week as a series of festivities like the vibrant and cultural celebrations all over the Philippines. The term Hinugyaw means “rejoicing” which is very apparent in every member of the Engineering community as everyone is invited in this grand event.

The Engineering Week will be launched on February 22, 2017 through an opening program in the Melchor Hall, College of Engineering 2nd Floor Lobby to recite the Pledge of Sportsmanship by the participating organizations. Different day and night events will be held throughout the whole Engineering Week (February 22 – March 4).

Feb 22:

Smoker Night (UP Film Institute, 7 PM – 12 MN)

Continuing its tradition of promoting creativity and critical thinking, SILAKBO: Smoker Night 2017 aims to attack, tackle, and criticize relevant social issues through a comedic play. This night event features Engineering-based organizations as they exhibit unique interpretations of their stands on the issues. This event also aims to showcase the holistic upbringing of UP Engineering students that are not only excellent in their fields but are also proactive members of the society. As the first student-participated night event of the Engineering Week, Smoker Night propels the fighting spirit of each engineering student.

Feb 24:

Tanghalan (Eng’g Theater, 5:30 – 8:30 PM)

Now on its second year, the Engineering Student Council brings SIDLAK: TANGHALAN 2017, an event where our faculty, administration, and staff can showcase their talents to the Engineering community. We, the students, can show our utmost appreciation outside of the classroom setup. With the theme of the Giant Lantern Festival, we shall watch our dear performers as they are the ones who truly light up our lives inside the college. Jammeng’g (Cities Events Place, 6 PM – 12 MN)

Jammeng’g is a themed battle of the bands where different amateur bands hailing from various engineering organizations fight it out in a battle royal of musicality and artistic skills. Engineering students jam with them as they rock it out with all their hearts, eyeing the elusive prize. Bands are given the liberty to choose their songs of preference, as long as they comply with the theme of the year. On stage, they perform back-to-back with popular musicians of the day in front of a live audience in a raging party full of music and free-flowing drinks.

Feb 27:

Awitan (Henry Lee Irwin Theater, 6 PM – 12 MN)

Awitan is a prestigious university-wide choral competition open to all amateur choral groups of the different student organizations in UP Diliman. Since its conception in 1965, AWITAN has serenaded the engineering community with a wide variety of Christmas and Themed chorale pieces. This year’s pre- judging system is geared towards a bias-free evaluation of the participating groups via blind judging. Participating groups would have the opportunity to hear the comments and suggestions of the judges after their pre-judging performance.

Indakan is a themed dance competition which aims to showcase the talents and creativity of amateur groups from various engineering organizations. Performances shall highlight the given theme through their dance choreography and music. This year, Indakan traces our native roots as it features the diversity and richness of Filipino culture and tradition. The performers from the group category will take us around the country as they embody Filipino cultural dance and celebration through their performances that shall bring different Philippine festivals from the streets to the stage.

MSK 2017 is a competition of performances among different Engineering organizations that addresses and tackles various socio-cultural issues through arts and fashion. DICT and PCTO to Hold First Philippine Telecommunications Summit on March 9 and 10

“The consensus among all players is to work on concrete solutions. It will not be a blame game. This way, we will be able to move forward and fast track ICT,” shared Eric De Los Reyes, Chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO), during the Press Briefing of the first ever Philippine Telecoms Summit. Held at Via Mare Restaurant, on February 22, 2017, the media briefing was attended by heads of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and PCTO, and representatives from Globe Telecom and Smart Communications.

PCTO, in partnership with DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), brings together the Telecommunications Industry’s stakeholders, comprising of government agencies and regulators, industry players, experts, and consumers in one event to address the problems and issues surrounding the state of Telecommunications in the country today.

The PH Telecoms Summit will address three main concerns: Cost, Coverage, and Speed of telecommunication services in the country, and how these can be fixed with the cooperation of all stakeholders. Representatives from the different interest groups will be given the opportunity to deliver their concerns and establish dialogue with all the participants. DICT Secretary Rodolfo A. Salalima promises that the Summit will be a no-holds-barred discussion; “I want the problems and challenges all out during the Summit, because if not, we will not know how to find a solution,” he added during the Briefing.

“The problem of one is the problem of all,” reiterated the Secretary, emphasizing the shared responsibilities among the government, the private, and the public sectors. With the goal of using Telecommunications as a tool for Nation Building, the two-day summit serves as a vehicle towards better internet and telecoms services.

Secretary Salalima concluded his statement with a message: “You have the power to use ICT as an enabler for education, enterprise, governance, and social empowerment.”

Our Pre-Valentine's Day Staycation at Torre Venezia Suites

February is love month due to Valentine's Day. It is when you'll mostly see many lavishly colorful objects shaped like a heart and decorated to be romantic enough to attract the attention. Well, it could also have been during the Ber months starting September due to the holiday season, but February is also a special month for me because this is when we gained freedom from the hand of a dictator during this month several years ago. Aside from this, it is the only month where there are only 28 days (and 29 days during leap year). In other words, it is a specially unique month among other months.

This also marks the beginning of family bonding, overflowing patience and generosity with one another especially among our family members because it was on February 11 and 12, when my husband and I celebrated Valentine’s Day in advance in one of the many prestigious suite rooms of Torre Venezia Suites - a hotel located in one of the busiest commercial places of Quezon City where you could find lots of commercial establishments that are ideal venues for all kinds of special events and celebrations. 

Actually, we always try to find time to bond with our kids, especially now that they are already teenagers. Our eldest is 18, second is 17, and the youngest is 13. It is during this stage that children usually don’t like to be seen with their parents anymore simply because of peer acceptance when they want to appear mature enough to be independent and not so endearing or "malambing" towards their parents. 

Now that they are older, there's no room for excessive display of affection even in the privacy of our homes. I believe the school doesn't provide the kind of relationship training they are most likely to enter when they finish their studies. I should know since most of the useful knowledge I needed in life I learned only from outside school. The school is not fast enough to evolve together with the kids making most of the studies irrelevant and obsolete by the time they finish college.

Children nowadays don’t want to be bullied as mommy’s or daddy's girl/boy. This is the reason why we always make sure to have quality time with our kids.

The EDSA Revolution Should Be the Grandest People Power Event Ever

If the current administration wants to celebrate the EDSA revolution anniversary in a simple manner, let's take it upon ourselves to make it the grandest event ever as our way to protest the absurdity they are trying to force into our faces.

For me, this event is what put the Philippines in the map... It was not the boxers, not the beauty queens, not even the floods, and especially not the "It's More Fun in the Philippines" tourism campaign. It's the EDSA Revolution, otherwise known as the People Power, that really caught the attention of the world.

When we overthrew a dictator who has remained in power for so many years, the world finally knew about the Philippines for having men and women who are united to fight an oppressor.

We had the dictator and his family fleeing out of the Philippines!

If we treat the EDSA Revolution like its nothing but an ordinary event, then we are forgetting how it abruptly hanged our lives for the better.

It would have been worst if the Marcos family continued their reign, and yet we see Filipinos putting them back in power. One almost made it to Malacanang, but I fear somebody is already starting to pave the way for them to return.

Honestly, I am very open when it comes to my political alliances, as every one of us should be. For it is not only ourselves that are heading for a likely downfall, but as well as the rest of the nation if we let another evil monstrosity reign again.

Evil takes many forms and they are often the ones we least expect.

A "social media policy" the Presidential Communications Office is crafting seeks to allow bloggers "to be recognized as legitimate sources of information."

However, this is in reference to pro-Duterte bloggers only.

So there's a big probability that you won't see me there at a Malacanang presscon. Lol!

I would rather blog about the truth rather than spread "fake" or "hyped" or "sensationalized" news (like what pro-Duterte bloggers do) just to get hits or views.

Media: We Break News and Not Hearts

Sana naging media na lang and lahat ng tao.... dahil we break news and not hearts.

Though, it is heartbreaking to find out that media is again being blamed by no less than somebody who originated from media himself.

Ganun na ba talaga? Kalimutan na lang ba ang nakaraan niya. If he believes media could easily be bribed with "envelopmental ideas" then he could be talking about his previous undertakings, and what he witnessed, and was a part of during his time as a member of media.

It is so sad that we are divided by uncertainty in knowing who among them are telling the truth, and who is spreading "fake news."

I would likely believe the ones who have nothing to gain, and are not accountable to a certain "boss" rather than the ones who have been known to turn a blind eye on matters that desperately seek their attention..or those who downplay issues and twist them to ignore the truth.

Kung bakit kasi mostly "trapo" and the same personalities pa rin ang binoto natin sa gobyerno. Hindi na ba tayo natuto?

The president has arrogantly flaunted how he "kills" to have his way. We have heard his dirty mouth, and have seen how he flashes the dirty finger. But many still opted for him...maybe because the other candidates were equally unfit.

Somebody better would only step up and participate in this election circus if we change our perception of our ideal candidate. Unfortunately, money continues to take the upper hand because we are continuously brainwashed by the grandest display of wealth - celebrity endorsers, elaborate campaigns (online and offline), massive advertisements, etc...which includes the fake news coming from social media masterminded by an obviously well-funded source which only aims to misinform.

However, the same groups which are crying for "No to Destabilization" seems to be the ones who are actually doing the destabilization to keep in power, and find an excuse to declare some sort of Martial Law which could be easily disguised to be beneficial, but would be destructive in truth.

Remember all those huge infrastructures built by a former dictator and his cohorts? They were merely established to hide what they've really been doing under the noses of our fathers and grandfathers. Until now many deaths and disappearances have been left unanswered, and we are experiencing a similar thing with this "Operation Tokhang" aka "War on Drugs."

There are many people coming out with testimonies that are either being scrutinized or downplayed as mere "politically motivated" efforts. Many have been silenced as well at places that were supposed to be secure, and the cries for justice remain on deaf ears. No wonder many who are capable are leaving the country.

History will keep on repeating itself if we don't learn from the past.

Our future is doomed if we keep on making politics a popularity contest.

Unlike a reality competition where the ones who get the largest number of text or audience votes (or the judges) get to win, the real "reality" we live in should not favor those who gets to shine because they have the edge over publicity.

It's time we scrutinize our government officials deeply, and give everyone a fair chance to promote themselves equally and fairly. How to do that? Then that's another story we should all work on. I never said it would be easy.

Wynn Wynn Ong: Redefining Boundaries

The retrospective will showcase the creative journey of a jewelry designer who is Burmese by birth, but Filipino at heart—from designing handcrafted heirloom jewelry to creating unique collections of art, furniture, couture, and objets d’art. Also on view are 18 portraits of Ong’s muses in their fantasy alter egos captured by model-photographer Jo Ann Bitagcol. Wynn Wynn Ong: Redefining Boundaries will be on view from March 8 to June 15.

Jewelry designer Wynn Wynn Ong continues to redefine what it means to be a woman of style. Her career as a jeweler began in 2001, when she designed pieces for herself that she could not find elsewhere. A lack of formal training was not an obstacle to her success as an internationally lauded artist whose works are now sought after by collectors. Meticulous attention to detail and age-old techniques, such as casting using the lost wax method, ensure the individuality of her jewelry. In fact, Ong never repeats designs and limits the number of pieces she produces each year.

Ong’s works are reflections of her family’s roots in Burma, a childhood in Vienna, summer trips around the globe, and her life now in Manila. She incorporates her interest in environmental sustainability through using local woods and recycled materials. She transforms monkeys, geckos, carabaos, birds, and other Philippine flora and fauna created from precious stones and metals into pendants, necklaces, the handles of cabinets, and minaudieres.

CHED Releases Memo on Moratorium on Field Trips and Others

"In view of recent events concerning field trips and similar activities of higher education institutions (HEIs) that have resulted to death and serious injuries to students and other members of the academic community, and in the exercise of the authority vested under Republic Act (RA) No. 7722, the Commission en Banc at its 487th regular meeting today, with concurrence of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)’s Management Committee, has approved and hereby imposes a moratorium on the conduct of all field trips and similar physical activities in all public and private HEIs, effective immediately. The Commission also reiterates the strict directives in CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 17, series of 2012 “Policies and Guidelines on Educational Tours and Field Trips of College and Graduate Students” (see attached).

In lieu of field trips or external campus activities, all HEIs should institute replacement activities that will serve the purpose intended by such off-campus activities, preserve the objectives sought to be achieved, and see to it that no student shall be negatively affected by this moratorium.

This moratorium shall continue and remain in effect until all measures have been undertaken to effectively address the issues concerning field trips and the stringent procedures supposed to be adopted by HEIs to ensure the safety and welfare of the concerned HEI stakeholders, as embodied in the enhanced CMO regarding the conduct of field trips and other related activities.

Failure to comply with this directive as reported by the CHED Regional Offices concerned shall cause the Commission to institute the necessary actions against the HEI concerned. Strict compliance is hereby enjoined from all HEIs and its governing boards and responsible officials."

It's been a while since I watch the last year's Moto GP Live. As Maverick Vinales secured the 4th slot of 2016 MotoGP ranking for Team Suzuki Ecstar MotoGP. And I was introduced to Suzuki's fastest motorcycle creation like the Habayusa then drove several Suzuki Motorcycles and Cars motoring travel adventures.

But for last Feb-Ibig week at 12 Monkeys Music Hall as we set loose as members of the media sings with Johnny's Band. For instance Darwin of Newsmoto unleashed that Bubble Gang Bitoy's version of Mr Swabe Grabeh. Its just for fun celebration as Suzuki thanks everyone for supporting their exciting events last 1016.

It's that time of the month already to get a haircut. I could feel, and see, my hair starting to be a little more uncontrollable especially after waking up from a good night's sleep. No amount of shampoo and conditioner could put it down, or up, as lengthy but beautiful as my wife's. Not even tbe strongest holding hair wax can put it in its proper place. I actually fell in love with my wife's hair first even before I got the chance to look at her more intimately. Lol!

If the hair is the crowning glory of women, men's hair is an identity with a huge exclamation point. It gives us the character that differentiates us from the youth in school who are required just one kind of haircut. Men get to flaunt their own preferred style or cut that would make them stand out from the rest.

This is why I am also selective of where I get my hair cut. Especially in my case where i also require coloring or dye to hide all those white or grey hair which does not really indicates my age but rather something I inherited from my relatives who get white hair even during their youth.

In my case, I've tried a lot of barbershops and salons already, but I seldom return to just one since none I believe I am still looking for that perfect cut. I may be so adventurous, but I do need to find that place which I could finally call my barber for eternity.

Fortunately, I am not alone on this search.  This is why new breed of barbershops are now on the rise, just like Sports Barbers.

Wordtext Systems, Inc., (WSI), one of the leading and the oldest pure IT distributor in the Philippines, recently showcased the technologies they are carrying together with the top-tier solutions and services  from their partner brands on February 17, 2017 at the WSI headquarters in Makati city.

The event highlighted WSI's  top solutions in mobility, data and security, and cloud computing technology. WSI showcased solutions in unified communications, virtualization, design & creatives, printing and imaging, business intelligence and analytics, security & back-up and networking.

Since I had another event happening almost at the same time, I requested WSI if I could come in earlier than the call time, and they agreed. However, I got there a bit earlier as expected as I had to cancel my earlier meeting in fear the traffic congestion of the metro would make it impossible for me to attend the event if I would still continue with the earlier meeting.

Thus, I got a sort of special arrangement and interview sessions with some of their engineers who accommodated my early presence.

Brands like Panasonic, Addasound, Citrix, Nuance, Huawei, Samsung, HP, WinTab, Jab, and a lot more participated in the event.

WSI also officially launched their Tech Lab, a technical laboratory where they could do product demonstrations, proof of concepts, and other technical experiments for the support of their resellers and end users for consultation and other value-added services. For IT peeps, especially network and systems administrators, this could be considered as a dream laboratory as the technical stuff you could do here is endless. I would love to play with all these top-of-the-line laboratory equipment like it was my batcave... ooppss! I think I just admitted I am Batman in real life. Lol!

Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation (PMPC) is marking its 50th year with targets and offerings that aim to surpass its previous milestones.

You'll distinctively see the Japan Quality proudly displayed among the logos and signage on stage together with the many kinds of appliances showcased all over the ball room of Makati Shangri-La Hotel on February 15, 2017.

The lavish buffet of gastronomic delights highlighted by the several choices for desserts add to the grandeur of the day. It would make you think that this is a special event as we could clearly see the extravagance all around us.

Oh, how I wanted to bring home one of those Panasonic appliances - refrigerators, washing machines, LED monitors, airconditioning units,  a lot more smaller kitchen appliances plus the beauty gadgets of which all of us got to bring home one that can be use to cleanse the face.

But the real highlight of the day are the announcement of the great performance of their innovative products from the previous years and their hopeful assurance of surpassing their performance in the coming years up to three times what they have accomplished now.
