NEC Launches New Touchscreen POS TWINPOS G5200 Series in Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

NEC Philippines today announced the launch the TWINPOS G5200 series, a new lineup of touchscreen Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, the latest addition to the NEC TWINPOS series.

The new TWINPOS G5200 series provides an extensive lineup of standard, pole-mount, wall-mount, and other models, enabling flexibility for installation in a variety of store layouts here in the country. In addition, the use of a flat surface display avoids ingress of water drops and dust from the front of the display.

Moreover, the new series offers easy maintenance of key components such as the hard disk drive, touch panel and motherboard assembly.

The new product supports NEC’s middleware that collects operational status of the POS terminal, including accumulated operating time, CPU load and internal temperature to detect actual and impending failures. Furthermore, the middleware visualizes remaining life of key components. The information obtained by the middleware enables preventative maintenance or quick recovery from failure, which in turn reduce opportunity losses resulting from POS terminal malfunctions.

The TWINPOS G5200 series contributes to efficient chain store operations when used with NEC’s business solutions for global retailers, which comprehensively covers business needs ranging from store operations to headquarters' operations.

NEC has been assisting non-stop store operations for 11 years in the Philippines. Going forward, NEC will provide continuous support for Filipino retailers to expand their business through its Life Cycle Management (LCM) services that support every part of the life cycle from planning to development, installation, deployment, and maintenance of ICT equipment for optimized store management.

The TWINPOS G5200 series is part of the NEC Global Enterprise Solutions lineup, NEC's portfolio of continually upgraded and expanded solutions and services offered globally to enterprise customers in retail, distribution, manufacturing, and other fields.

From 9 November, three Models will be available in the Philippines. The TWINPOS G5200Ui standard model, the TWINPOS G5200Vi which allows for more shelves for displaying promotional items and customer service, and the low-profile TWINPOS G5200Ei.

“Retail is one of the fastest growing markets for NEC in the Philippines. We are pleased to launch the TWINPOS G5200 which compliments NEC’s wide-range of retail solutions that seeks to add value to retail companies that need easy-to-maintain, scalable retail solutions for operational efficiency,” said Agnes A. Gervacio, President, NEC Philippines.

Interested parties on the new TWINPOS G5200 series can get in touch with the NEC Reseller and Distributor Network or send an email to inquiry@nec.com.ph.

Hontiveros Wants Women Workers to Get 150 days of Maternity Leave

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros on November 10, 2016 pushed for the passage of a law that will provide women workers 150 days of paid maternity leave.

In a press briefing organized by IndustriALL, a global union which represents 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, Hontiveros said that she filed Senate Bill No. 215 otherwise known as the "Expanded Maternity Leave Law of 2016" to double women workers' maternity leave from the current 60 days to 120 days, with extra 30 days for solo mothers. She said there is an urgent need for the government and the business community to pay its share in easing the multiple burden of working women.

Hontiveros, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Women and Gender Equality, said that her committee has already conducted its first hearing on the bill. The Senator explained that the current maternity leave law must be radically amended as it provides the lowest number of maternity leave days in the whole ASEAN region, alongside Malaysia.

"Filipino women workers can only take a maternity leave of 60 days pay while those who undergo caesarian deliveries are entitled to only 78 leave days with pay. This pales in comparison to countries like Vietnam which provides 120-180 maternity leave days or even the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) standard of 98 days," Hontiveros said.

Adoptive parents and alternative care-givers

Hontiveros said that her bill also seeks to recognize the role of adoptive parents and alternate caregivers (spouse, common-law partner, relative up to the 4th degree of consanguinity) by extending to them the benefits of her proposed bill, such as allocating at most thirty days of the maternity leave to an alternate caregiver.

"Adoptive parenting and alternative care-giving are real parenting. Giving adoptive parents and alternative care-givers ample time for child-rearing will amplify the cohesion of the family", Hontiveros said.

Increased maternity leave to reduce child mortality

Hontiveros said that increasing women workers' maternity leave will greatly reduce child mortality in the Philippines. Citing a study from the United Nations Children’s Fund, she said that the extension of paid maternity leave increased breastfeeding rates from 10 to 80%, providing ample protection against disease and life-threatening illnesses.

“We cannot punish women workers who give birth with an inadequate and internationally-inferior maternity law. It's time for a maternity law that has a strong emphasis on women workers' rights, particularly reproductive rights, which historically have been the onus of women, and have largely been left with minimum respect and recognition in Philippine society," Hontiveros concluded.

However, I am entering the bout as the reigning and defending champion, and I plan on leaving that way.”

Eduard Folayang stated: “There is no doubt Shinya Aoki is a legend in Asian MMA, but I firmly believe I can be the one to beat the legend. Statement of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi on Nuclear Energy Utilization

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Duterte Administration, through the Department of Energy (DOE), puts premium on the provision of quality, reliable, adequate, secure and reasonably-priced energy by looking at all possible resources that the country can utilize to achieve our industrialization goals.

To diversify the energy mix, the DOE will study nuclear energy as a possible option for the Philippines.

We stand behind the President’s pronouncements on ensuring the safe utilization of all energy sources, especially with the renewed interest on nuclear energy technology.

The DOE is currently proceeding with unified and coordinated efforts and activities with the creation of a Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (NEPIO).

The NEPIO is headed by a Steering Committee with top DOE officials at the helm, while DOE bureaus will create technical working groups (TWGs) to ensure effective and timely implementation of its functions and responsibilities.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and its attached agencies, DOE attached agencies, other relevant government offices and local and international partner organizations will be asked to assist the NEPIO in its work.

During the recent IAEA International Conference on the Prospects For Nuclear Power In The Asia Pacific Region, we pointed out: “The country should have a clear position on nuclear power. A well-informed decision is key to a sustainable and comprehensive energy program. With all the new findings, technological advancements and successful experiences of countries around the world, nuclear energy holds much promise for long-term energy plans.”

Castelo: Emergency Powers Should Also Cover Aviations

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Addressing the country's aviation problems should be included in the emergency-powers measure being considered to enable the Duterte administration to effectively deal with the traffic crisis in Metro Manila.

Quezon City Rep. Winston "Winnie " Castelo made the suggestion yesterday as he stressed the need for an "integrated and holistic approach to the traffic problem."

"Metro Manila's traffic woes are just a manifestation of the decades of government's neglect of the country's transport infrastructure requirements," said Castelo, pointing out that the failure of past administrations to construct regional airports and expand the Ninoy Aquino International Airport have cause air-traffic congestion that also extends to road traffic congestion.

"We need a complete and comprehensive transportation plan that covers land, air, and water," Castelo said. The chair of the House committee on Metro Manila development said aviation must be included in the emergency-powers bill because air traffic-congestion causes delays in take off and landing that bear huge economic losses and international embarrassment, said .

"Also, NAIA has on always been listed among the worst airports in the world, which not only embarrasses Filipinos but more importantly discourages tourists and investors from coming to the country," he added.

Globe Network Investments to Amplify Benefits of New Spectrum Assets; Continuously Enhance Mobile Network

Wazzup Pilipinas!
Globe Telecom’s additional network investments will be used mainly to amplify benefits of the telecommunication operator’s new spectrum assets to further enhance its mobile services particularly for data.

The company recently announced an additional capital spend of $300 million for the year in an effort to continuously improve mobile data services. More than half of the additional capital expenditures or $160 million will be devoted to deploying cell sites using the 700 megahertz spectrum as well as additional spectrum in the 2600 MHz band, said Globe Chief Information and Technology Officer Gil Genio.

This year alone, the company has allotted around $400-$500 million in investments for mobile. The company expects to do more in the future, said Genio, speaking at the 1st DICT Summit in the country.

He said the company is targeting to roll out additional 700 sites for LTE 700 MHz in major cities in the country including Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao. So far, the company has around 260 LTE 700 MHz sites. The company also plans to deploy close to 2,700 sites for LTE 2600 band. Additional core and transport upgrades will also be undertaken, Genio said.

In addition to investments for mobile, Globe is also aggressively ramping up investments for its corporate data network with additional investment of $50 million, and for home broadband deployment with $90 million more capex.

During the conference, Genio also reiterated the need for the rationalization of permitting process for the establishments of cell sites. He revealed that Globe has a backlog of 3000 sites amid difficulties in securing permits from various local government units, homeowners associations and other government agencies. This is in light of the 4,500 sites committed by Globe to the NTC as part of a 3-year rollout plan as it acquired new telco assets from the SMC sellout.

“We need to dramatically improve cell site coverage in the Philippines,” Genio emphasized, noting that the country only has about 21,000 total cell sites compared about 55,000 in Vietnam. According to Genio, Globe is able to put up 400 to 500 towers every year, or half of its target of 1,000 sites due to permitting challenges.

Causes of Obesity We Need To Know

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Being overweight or being obese refers to the body weight that is greater than what is considered healthy for a certain height. Although many people consider losing weight, or make an effort to avoid being overweight or obese because of their physical appearance, there is more to it than meets the eye. Truthfully, there are serious health risks that we need to address when someone is overweight or obese. This is not just about how the clothes don’t fit well anymore, how it is hard to move and even have an active lifestyle. An overweight or obese person is at high risk in having chronic diseases such as Coronary Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, Gallstones and even cancer! To avoid having these health hazards, we must be able to avoid having excess weight or being obese—and by knowing the causes, we might be able to successfully avoid being obese!

Causes of Obesity:

1. Lack of Energy Balance – Lack of energy balance happens when one takes in more calories than what is used. Energy IN is the amount of calories you take while Energy OUT is the amount of calories you use. If there is no balance in the energy you take in and use up, the probability of weight gain is high.

2. Inactive Lifestyle – An inactive lifestyle is when you spend hours sitting down, watching TV and purposely choosing lying around than exercising. With this kind of lifestyle, weight gain is very much possible. This is because the amount of energy you are using is not the same as the energy you take in from food and drinks. When you prefer to ride cars, use elevators and escalators all the time, you are just putting your energy on rest which results to weight gain.

3. Environment – The place we live in, the place we are exposed to are a huge part of our health choices. Like the lack of affordable gym that people can use anytime, lack of sidewalks and bike lanes. Huge meal portions at restaurants, lack of healthy food choices that are made affordable for the general public. Even the working schedules are not health friendly at all. With this kind of environment, we are exposed to an unhealthy lifestyle/

4. Genes and Family History – Mostly, obesity is carried out because of family history. Families share food and activities together so if a family eats unhealthily and live a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain or even obesity may follow. This is because a person adapts the unhealthy lifestyle he/she gets exposed to.

5. Health Conditions – Some hormone problems may cause overweight and obesity, such as underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), Cushing's syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Underactive thyroid is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't make enough thyroid hormone. Lack of thyroid hormone will slow down metabolism which causes weight gain. Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which the body's adrenal glands make too much of the hormone cortisol. Cushing's syndrome also can develop if a person takes high doses of certain medicines, such as prednisone, for long periods. People who have Cushing's syndrome gain weight, have upper-body obesity, a rounded face, fat around the neck, and thin arms and legs. PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that affects about 5–10 percent of women of childbearing age. Women who have PCOS often are obese, have excess hair growth, and have reproductive problems and other health issues. These problems are caused by high levels of hormones called androgens.
