Considered the cleanest among the known fossil fuels, the 414 megawatts (MW) San Gabriel and 97 MW Avion Natural Gas Power Plants support the increasing economic growth trajectory target of 7-8%, while also balancing the energy mix.

In his Keynote Address, Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said “San Gabriel and Avion’s combined capacity of 511 megawatts will help secure our energy supply for the years ahead.”

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Delivered by Sec. Alfonso G. Cusi
11 November 2016, 11:00 a.m.
First Gen Complex, Batangas City

Good morning, everyone. Thank you First Gen, especially Chair/CEO Federico Lopez for inviting us to witness the inauguration of the San Gabriel and Avion Natural Gas Power Plants in this scenic and growing City of Batangas. I also take this opportunity to convey the warmest greetings of President Rodrigo Duterte to everybody present.

Today marks a milestone for the energy sector and the entire Filipino nation. Recognizing the role of the power sector in propelling the country’s economic growth, these Nat Gas Plants with a combined capacity of 511 megawatts secure our energy supply for the years ahead. This suits well the current administration’s goal towards industrialization having an economic growth trajectory target poised at 7-8% by 2030.

We are gathered here to extol the wonder of alternative fuel like natural gas in supplementing our energy requirements. In 2015, the natural gas accounted for 2,861 MW dependable capacity or 15% contribution in the power mix nationwide.

We also celebrate another foray into natural gas as a viable source of cleaner energy to power the growing needs of our communities. The natural gas industry’s role in advocating environmental sustainability is equally important and consistent with the government’s vision to reduce GHG emissions in the long run.

With the energy sector being a capital-intensive industry, we recognize the indispensable role of the private sector. In this line, the DOE will continue to encourage energy investments, particularly in the natural gas industry, to support the power sector and other developing energy industries. It is also imperative for the DOE to find the right energy mix by considering technological advancements and all possible options, while also factoring in the growing social awareness on energy sustainability.

Relatively, we urge power developers to prioritize the welfare and safety of the people in their host localities. We hope that First Gen will boldly take the lead in developing a pro-people agenda in its business agendas for a more progressive and sustainable future.

As we commercially operate these plants, may these symbolize our commitment towards total electrification, which will light up not only our homes, but the hopes and dreams of every Filipino, especially the less privileged and underserved. May these likewise signify our attunement to a common vision of reducing carbon footprint for the benefit of the succeeding generations.

Congratulations to First Gen for accomplishing a great feat for the people!

Para sa Sambayanang Filipino, Maraming Salamat at Mabuhay po kayong lahat!
