Easter Thoughts on Failure and Success, Death and Resurrection

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Happy (Belated) Easter!

For our Christian brothers and sisters, Easter is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Oh, and for some, it’s the day of playing with the Easter bunny and hunting for some Easter eggs!

For me, Easter is a reminder that it is possible for you and me to “rise from the dead”!

In the dictionary, resurrect is synonymous with the words revive, relaunch, regenerate. If you think about it, isn’t that something you can and should do in your own life?

What dreams, plans, personal projects have you put in the back burner for a long time? What talents, skills and interests have you set aside because you’ve been caught up in a daily routine of working for money? What past mistakes and disappointments stopped you from getting back up to try again?

We’ve all been there. Each one of us has been rejected, criticized and put to shame. We’ve been hurt, and told we’re not good enough, sadly, by the people we love and trust. We’ve all, in one way or another, FAILED.

I believe that failures are small successes that ultimately lead us to our destination, the realization of our vision. Failure is not a dead end, but a detour to something better that perhaps you are unable to see because you’re focused on what’s right in front of you. Failure is the path that is hidden from plain sight because everyone else is too scared to walk in it. Failure is not a signal to give up, but to push ONE MORE TIME.

Even the most successful people in history have gone through their own resurrection, sometimes after multiple “deaths”:

Steven Spielberg was rejected by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts multiple times before he became the Hollywood blockbuster director and producer we know today. Walt Disney was fired by his editor at the Kansas City Star for his “lack of imagination” before he built the happiest place on earth. And who could forget Thomas Edison, who invented the incandescent light bulb after 10,000 tries?

Perhaps you don’t intend to create a blockbuster movie or build your own amusement park. But for sure, you dream of doing or becoming something bigger and better than what you are now. And I bet you’re wondering, how did they do it? What made them keep going?

The single most important thing that makes people persist is their VISION. A vision is a mental image of your desired future. It is your self-actualization, your destination. If your vision is bigger than your fear of failure, your excuses and your lack of self-confidence, no amount of rejection or criticism can stop you.

Even I had my own share of failures in my 20 years in my industry. I lost millions with my first attempt to build a recording studio back in 2004. It was a combination of wrong decisions and rushing to reap rewards that caused me to fail. But, I stayed true to my vision to make the Philippines the center of voice-over excellence in Asia. Learning from my mistakes, I decided to start small and together with my business partner, we resurrected our voice-over business by establishing Creativoices Productions in 2005. Not only did we build a recording studio, but we also turned it into a school for aspiring voice artists. Now, Creativoices has become the leading online voice-over service provider and voice acting school in the Philippines.

Lesson learned: If your vision is focused on making other people better and happy, the Universe will conspire to make it happen for you.

So today, I challenge you to break free from your fears, past hurts and anything that is keeping you from living your life to the fullest. Resurrect your dreams. For all you know, the only person that’s stopping you… is YOU.
