The ADDLIB of a Dancer: Featuring Elgin Bez

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The first thing that pops into my head when I hear the word “adlib” is to improve your speech with your own style. But in the world of dance, adlib takes on a different meaning.

Honestly, I didn’t know them at first. I barely watch television so I have no idea on how they perform and where they put on a show. I tried searching on Google about their group name and I came across the ADDLIB website. They look so promising and fierce. So I got thrilled when I received an invitation to interview one of the most sought-after dance crew in our country.

The moment I stepped into Blue Light Studios, the thought of dropping my bag and sway to the beat of the music filled my mind. But then again I had to pull myself back to reality. The studio was big enough to accommodate quite a number of people. There were people slumped on the floor while some were in the chairs. Four of them were in front of the mirrors warming up. I entered the other room and I saw a couple of girls prepping up.

Nico was the first one to notice me and introduced himself. When I told him about the interview, he smiled and led me into the other room. I was seated comfortably when Elgin emerged from the door and started our small talk.

Sir Elgin's interview

Elgin was one of the original members of the ADDLIB Dance Crew and also one of the teachers for the summer workshop. He teaches SOUL class which is more of the Advanced Hip hop type. His look actually reminds me of one of the characters in the movie STOMP THE YARD.

Elgin started dancing in his younger years. He joined the school dance troupe and competed among other schools. When he got into College, his love for dancing still remained. Through a common friend, he met Joe Abuda who now heads the group.

Together with some of the original members they formed the ADDLIB Dance Crew, they joined different dance battles and got a place in most of them. Slowly, they climbed to performing in corporate shows and successfully landed a stint in the television industry. That big break led them to fulfill their dream in participating in the World Hip hop Competition together with other Filipino dance crews. Luckily, they landed in the 29th place out of 64 contestants. Now that’s something to be proud of.
