Global Finance Convention 2023 : Coding Limitless Possibilities

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

“When money realizes that it is in good hands, it wants to stay and multiply in those hands.” – Idowu Koyenikan, internationally acclaimed organizational consultant and author. Money and finance are extremely important in today’s day and age. We have a drive to earn, save, and spend, but we cannot do these things if we are not wise. Learning the whys and hows of finance and economics can be as simple or as challenging as can be; however, it does not mean it is entirely impossible to understand.

Diving into the world of finance may seem like the biggest leap in life, so why not take that first step?

Everything about finance cannot be learned all at once. Nevertheless, mentors serve as guidance and exist for that exact reason. These people have been in the industry for a notable period of time, so imagine how much knowledge they have, as well as what tips and tricks they have up their sleeves. Aligned with the great words of Bob Proctor, “A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you than you see in yourself and helps bring it out of you.” They have a myriad of ideas and wisdom to pass on to society, especially the youth, in order to guide them to achieve their financial goals, while also teaching them how to be financially competitive.

However, not everyone has opportunities to meet these eclectic individuals or know where to find them. So, what now?

With everything that has been said thus far, this is the whole reason why the Management of Financial Institutions Association (MaFIA), an accredited professional student organization of DLSU, will be hosting the Global Finance Convention 2023, with the theme: ‘Coding Limitless Possibilities’. The last GFC was back in 2018, and now it’s back and will be better than ever!

This time around, the event aims to provide the youth with a comprehensive overview of finance and its economic impact, with the intention of empowering them to be financially competitive. Alongside this, the convention focuses on increasing the knowledge of youths on topics such as business, financial goals, financial literacy, wide-known market trends, and many more. Ticket fees for External Partners range from ₱210 - ₱250.

The event will take place at Natividad Fajardo-Rosario Gonzales Auditorium (Br. Andrew Gonzales Hall, 18th Floor) on March 25th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Don’t miss out on the opportunity! To always stay updated with the everything GFC, keep in touch with MaFIA and GFC by following them on their social media platforms:

From Bubblers to Sherlock Pipes: Exploring the Variety of Glass Pipes

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Glass pipes have been a popular smoking accessory for decades. They come in various shapes, sizes, and designs and are known for their smooth hits and intricate designs. In this article, you will find out some of the most popular types of glass pipes and the unique features of a glass pipe.

Bubblers

Bubblers are a popular type of pipe that combines the functionality of a water pipe with the portability of a traditional pipe. They typically feature a bowl, a stem, and a water chamber that filters and cools the smoke. Bubblers are available in various sizes, from small handheld versions to larger models that can sit on a table. Some styles include hammer bubblers, sidecar bubblers, and sherlock bubblers.

Hammer Bubblers

Hammer bubblers are named for their hammer-like shape. They feature a flat base that allows them to stand upright on a table or other flat surfaces. The stem and bowl are attached at an angle, making them easy to hold and use.

Sidecar Bubblers

Sidecar bubblers are designed with the bowl and stem located on the side of the water chamber rather than on top. This design allows for a smoother hit and prevents water from splashing into the mouthpiece.

Sherlock Bubblers

Sherlock bubblers are named after the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. They feature a curved stem and a broad base, which provides stability and allows them to sit upright. You can choose from miniature handheld versions to larger models that can sit on a table.

Spoons

Spoons are types of glass pipes that are spoon-shaped. They typically feature a bowl at one end, a stem in the middle, and a mouthpiece at the other. Spoons are available in various sizes, from small handheld versions to larger models that can sit on a table. They are available as fumed spoons, worked spoons, and chillums.

Fumed Spoons

Fumed spoons are made by coating the inside of the glass with a thin layer of metal, such as gold or silver. This creates a unique effect where the pipe changes color depending on the lighting and angle.

Worked Spoons

Worked spoons are made by adding intricate designs to the outside of the glass. It can include anything from swirls and stripes to animals and landscapes. People often use these as decorative pieces and functional smoking accessories.

Chillums

Chillums are shaped like straight tubes, typically featuring a bowl and mouthpiece. Chillums are available in various sizes, from small handheld versions to larger models that can sit on a table. Clear chillums, colored chillums and fumed chillums are some designs they come in.

Clear Chillums

Clear chillums are made from clear glass and are popular for those who prefer a simple, classic look. They are also popular among collectors, as they allow the smoke to be seen as it travels through the pipe.

Colored Chillums

Colored chillums are made by adding pigments to the glass during manufacturing. This creates a wide range of colors, from bright and bold to subtle and muted.

A glass pipe is popular among smokers for its smooth hits and intricate designs. Bubblers, spoons, chillums, and sherlock pipes are some of the most popular glass pipe types available today. Each kind offers unique features and designs, allowing smokers to find the perfect one to suit their needs and preferences.

Citizens’ photos of oil spill can help marine scientists save our seas

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Researchers are banking on Filipinos’ inherent love of photography and social media, bringing everyone together through collaborative “citizen science” to help save the country’s precious marine resources from the ravages of a recent disastrous oil spill.

The public is encouraged to send photos of the MT Princess Empress oil spill, along with a description and location to https://bit.ly/MTPE_GPS. Scientists can use this information to improve their understanding of the disaster and to make better forecast models. (Photo credit: UPD-CS SciComm)

The University of the Philippines - Diliman Marine Science Institute (UPD-CS MSI) is rallying the public to use their mobile phones to help get a better idea of the extent of the oil spill from the tanker MT Princess Empress, which sank last February 28 off the coast of Naujan, Occidental Mindoro.

The simple act of taking a photo and uploading it along with the time and location will be used by the researchers as starting points for their forecast models, complemented by data from other sources including satellite images and computer simulations. (The submission form can be found here: https://bit.ly/MTPE_GPS)

“It’s as easy as uploading your favorite photo to social media,” said UPD-CS MSI Associate Professor Irene Rodriguez. “We need continuous monitoring for the presence of oil along the coasts to inform our models. All you have to do is send us your photo of the oil spill, along with when and where the picture was taken.”

The UPD-CS MSI’s team of experts has been working closely around the clock with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) alongside other universities, government agencies, and stakeholders in a race to address the Mindoro oil spill and stop it from spreading.

Such public-sourced initiatives, often called “citizen science” and “citizen journalism,” are regularly used around the world to tap into the local knowledge of people on the ground to help build up a better understanding of oftentimes complex, large-scale phenomena. The US Geological Survey’s (USGS’s) “Did You Feel It?”, for example, aggregates public responses and social media mentions to assess and understand the impact of recent earthquakes. National Geographic Magazine also lists several citizen science initiatives in which even gradeschool kids can participate, from reef monitoring to space exploration.

Meanwhile, citizen journalism has long been a staple of online reportage in the Philippines as far back as 2009, when local news websites had to rely heavily on social media posts for updates on the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy.

The public is encouraged to contribute geotagged images of the MT Princess Empress oil spill through this form: https://bit.ly/MTPE_GPS. The use of a GPS-enabled phone and a GPS camera app such as “GPS Map Camera” (available on Google Play and the Apple Store) are recommended so that geotag location data can be preserved.
