Stakeholders Gears to Revive the Maritime Industry

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Various stakeholders of the maritime industry converged in the Manila Yacht Club yesterday to discuss about the problems of the dying seafaring industry. Among those concerns is our dwindling deployment of the Filipino seafarers, EMSA assessment, the country’s inclusion in the IMO whitelist and the Ambulance chasers.

During the meeting Mr. Miguel Angel Rocha, CEO of Cf Sharp Crew Management Inc., voices out their issue with ambulance chasers. According to him, some of their principals would like to come back here and rehire our seafarers however their only concern is that they cannot get fair justice from the trials against their seafarers who are filing cases against them with the encroachment of ambulance chasers.

This statement was agreed upon by the Joint Manning Group (JMG) who cited that that is exactly their principals’ dillema as well.

Meanwhile, PAMTCI President Karen Avila also speaks out in behalf of the training centers, their predicament that a lot of substandard training centers are not compliant with the requirements and are offering low-priced training fees cheaper than the actual cost of training. PAMTCI condemns the strictness against large training training centers that only complies with the requirements which is within the standards of the IMO STCW Convention.

She also took as an example the Basic Training (BT) which originally costs 5,500PHP but some training centers are offering it for only 2, 500PHP. She questions how are those training centers were able to do that. It can only be done when certificates are given even if the trainees are not attending the courses.

Also seconding about the compliance issue were the sector of maritime schools, wherein they pointed out the severity of regulation among major schools and yet no action were taken against the small substandard schools. None of those substandard schools were taken down and MARINA is not doing anything about it.

Each stakeholder in the meeting were suffering with the growing mess in the maritime industry, and they are now determined to do something against this troubles.

On the other hand, United Filipino Seafarers (UFS President) Engr. Nelson Ramirez, who also attended the meeting, was also pleased that finally he is no longer alone in fighting for the betterment of the country’s maritime and seafaring industry.

Ramirez pledges full support for the success of this great endeavor.

Running a More Efficient Business

Wazzup Pilipinas!

When a business is run efficiently, you’re likely to see results in the area of performance. It is, therefore, in the interest of entrepreneurs to continuously look for ways to improve the way their organization is run.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to running an efficient business, so you can try a combination of learning from other businesses and adopting your own practices. Keep reading to discover how you can run a more efficient business and hopefully, save yourself time as well as money in the process.

Identify What Doesn’t Work

Before you go fixing things in your business, first identify what isn’t working. As the saying goes, there is no need to fix what isn’t broken, so avoid doing that. Examples of inefficiency to look out for are redundant processes, hard to find information, or overly complicated processes. Remember that the goal of efficiency is to make the most of your time and resources.

Other ways to identify inefficiencies are to take baseline measurements across your organization and use them like a roadmap to your inefficiencies.

Recycle

Being efficient isn’t just about what you do within your office. It can also extend to how your practices affect the world around you. Invest in recycling and make it a part of your office culture.

Not only are customers keener on green businesses nowadays, but it could also give you a sense of fullfilment. Having said that, you can recycle things such as office supplies as well as paper cups. Additionally, if you tend to have robust amounts of plastic or cardboard waste, get baling wire from balingwiredirect.com to bundle up the waste and have it recycled.

Get Employee Feedback

Don’t underestimate the role that employees can play in helping you run a more efficient business. Seeing as they’re doing all of the gritty work to keep your business above water, they are in a good position to understand what is working and what’s not.

Ask them to give honest feedback regarding where they face the most challenges. Also, ask for suggestions regarding how they think the process could be improved. Invest in your Employees. Help them upskill through business analyst certification courses available online.

In terms of how to get employee feedback, you can use the simple format of surveys. Some employees may feel more comfortable if they have the option of leaving anonymous feedback. It also helps when you listen and apply relevant feedback as that will encourage openness when future feedback is requested.

Outsource

When your employees have more work than they can handle, it could have a negative effect on their output. To improve efficiency, outsource non-core activities and give them to freelancers or contractors. This gives employees the time and energy to focus on tasks that are going to help grow your business.

Examples of such activities are human resource management, admin, payroll, and accounting functions. In doing so, you could also end up saving money as you avoid hiring full-time staff that you don’t necessarily need.

Running an efficient business will help you move quicker and also manage what you have. It isn’t something that will be achieved overnight, but with patience and the right approach, you should be well on your way.
