Film on Child Punishment Wins Sine Kabataan Award

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A project for a Cinematography class under the Digital Filmmaking program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Design and Arts (SDA) bagged the Special Jury Prize at the Sine Kabataan short film competition.

Director Jocelyn “Len” Frago received the award for her film Koleksyong Pamalo during the 2018 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) Gabi ng Pasasalamat held last August 19 at Whitespace, Don Chino Roces Ave. Ext., Makati City.

Koleksyong Pamalo tells the story of a boy who collects all the memories of his mother’s different kinds of “pamalo.”

“I wanted to present what abuse is like at a young age in a darkly comical and colorful manner where you feel sympathetic and warm at the same time,” Frago explained.

Frago said that the innocence of a child plays a big factor in how we view children. The film, which she submitted as a project for her CINEMAT subject under Sir Danton Wieneke, deals with the questions "When does a child stop being a child?" and "When does a mother stop being a mother?"

Lorys Plaza at Ardinian "Jaq" Sanque won Best Short Film for Bato Bato Pik, which is about a young teenage girl faced with an untimely pregnancy. As she and her boyfriend contemplate the consequences and the effects of this problem in their young lives, their conversation suddenly leaves the fate of their unborn child to a game of chance.

Daniel Delgado and Tiara Angelica Nicolas received the Best Director prize for Masaya Ako, which tells the story of a boy who encounters many struggles in life, like bullying, his parent's separation and trouble in school, but he still forces a smile to get by each day.

Enalyn Legaspi's Alas-Nuebe ng Tanghali brought home the Audience Choice Award. The short film is about three children who indulge in the nicest toys and tastiest food only to find out that everything turns out differently from what they are seeing.

Runner by Levi Jun Miscala got the #GlobeOfGood award for honoring the youth's representation of current social issues the young Filipino faces day-to-day. In the film, Boy, a fast runner, wants to continue his secondary education by becoming an athlete but his inauspicious boss obstructed his aspiration because he is the best drug runner.

The other Sine Kabataan finalists are Anonymous Student Vlog by Christian BabistaBahay-bahayan by Brian Spencer Reyes and Isang Tula Para Sa Nawawala by Rod SinghThe short films were featured along with the PPP full-length film entries from August 15 to 21 in cinemas nationwide.

The Sine Kabataan films were judged by award-winning director Mikhail Red, producer Bianca Balbuena-Liew and actress Angeli Bayani.
Launched last year as one of the pet programs of then National Youth Commission Chair Ice Seguerra with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Sine Kabataan aims to provide a youth lens on youth issues that affect the sector.

UE CFAD Faculty Holds Folium Portfolio Exhibition

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The University of the East College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design recently opened the Folium Quadrennial Exhibit: Revisiting the CFAD Mentors' Portfolio at UE Caloocan in celebration of the college's 54 years of being one of the oldest and leading design and art schools and one of the currently emerging architecture institutions in the country.

The event was graced and officially opened last August 3 by University Chancellor for UE Caloocan Dr. Zosimo M. BattadUE CFAD Dean Celino B. Santiago, and other deans and administrative officers of the different colleges and departments of the university.

Spearheaded by the UE CFAD Academic Guild led by Asst. Prof. Ronwell Jason L. Bacani and the Folium exhibition committee with award-winning filmmaker Richard S. Legaspi as chair, interior designer Pamela Leila S. Galera as co-chair and Ar. Jan Michael H. de Olazo as secretary, the exhibition also kicked off the college's 55th founding anniversary celebration for next year.

Fifteen faculty members, namely Bacani, Legaspi, Galera, de Olazo, Ar. Joseph Alcoran, Ar. Art Barroca, Ar. Arnold de Vera, Prof. Fe Evangelio, Ar. Abelardo Firmeza, Ar. Melanie Gime, Engr. Jemuel Jao, Ar. Michel Landicho, Ar. Glenn Openiano, Ar. Janice Echiverri-Quintano, and Prof. Kristoffer Tolentino together with College Sec. Daniel Dennis J. Lim and Dean Santiago showcased their profiles and portfolios to the UE community.

It showed what UE CFAD has, from its administrative officers to its faculty, proving that they are not just academicians, but also active practitioners of their respective fields and professions. The exhibit included their works from here and abroad.

Another interesting feature of Folium is the #3Things which gives additional information on each faculty member's personal information, hobbies, collections and life outside the university. Who would have thought that one of them was supposed to be part of the group of boy scouts who perished in a historic plane crash? Or that some of them were also stage actors and musicians?

It is also a welcome break for students to see the lighter side of their professors, some of whom have a huge collection of Lego, Kimmidolls, flags, toy cars, and many more. Who would have known that the college secretary was once a band vocalist and that Dean Santiago is a former bowling champion? These are just some of the unique things to see at the Folium.

The exhibition will run until August 30 at the UE Caloocan campus and will soon be transferred for display at UE Manila.

A1 20TH Anniversary “Reunion” Tour – A Second Show is Added in Manila!

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Pinoy fans of the hitmaking British-Norwegian band a1 are in for a treat this 2018 – after 15 long years, the four original members of the band will reunite for their 20th Anniversary Reunion Tour in Manila.

Due to overwhelming demand, A1 and Concert Republic officially announce that the highly anticipated concert will happen not just once but 3 times in the Philippines (2 shows in Manila and 1 in Cebu).

A1’s fans in Manila are given the second chance to catch their fave Boyband as a second show is added on October 22, 2018 at the KIA Theatre. Their first show which is slated on October 21 was immediately sold out after it was announced.

The band, composed of members Ben Adams, Mark Read, Paul Marazzi and Christian Ingebrigtsen first formed in 1998 with their debut single “Be The First to Believe,” leading them to achieve worldwide success through the late 1990s and early 2000s, especially in Southeast Asia.

Their massive successes includes winning the BRIT Award for “British Breakthrough Act” in 2001, followed by the release of hit songs such as “Like A Rose,” “Caught In The Middle,” “Same Old Brand New You,” their rendition of A-Ha’s “Take On Me,” “Everytime,” among many other tunes that have reached number 1 and entered Top 10 charts internationally.

Though the quartet split up following the exit of Marazzi in 2002, Ingrebrigsten, Read, and Adams decided to reform A1 as a trio in a series of concerts held in Norway. Since their return, they have released new singles, along with their fourth and fifth studio albums, Waiting for Daylight (2010) and Rediscovered (2012). The band has since enjoyed a huge resurgence of interest and demand internationally, as they bring a mixture of old hits and new songs, playing sold out stadium shows in Scandinavia and across Asia.

As they approach the 20th Anniversary of their debut single and album, the remaining members of the original band are ecstatic to welcome back Marazzi for their Anniversary Tour over 15 years after his exit. The quartet will revisit beloved Southeast Asian countries for this tour, which includes shows in Manila on October 21 and 22 at the Kia Theater and in Cebu on October 25 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

Talking about this much-awaited reunion tour, Ben, Christian and Mark say “We're unbelievably excited that Paul will be joining us again and bringing the original line up of A1 together for the very first time in more than 15 years.

There was always an amazing dynamic and energy when the four of us performed together. So, what better place to bring that magic back than to the part of the world that has always embraced us with such incredible love and support, South East Asia, more specifically, the Philippines, Indonesia & Singapore. We absolutely cannot wait to see our friends and fans over there once again and bring them a show that will remind us of all the great times we had together. It will surely be a show to remember and not to be missed.”

In addition, returning member Paul is honored to be joining the Southeast Asian tour: “This time 20 years ago I was just starting out on an amazing journey that would take me to all 4 corners of the earth.  I was lucky enough to see some amazing places and meet some very kind and wonderful people too. I can’t think of anywhere better to continue this journey once again than South East Asia, and what better company than my old friends Mark, Ben and Christian. I have so many fond memories of my time there and feel so privileged to be able to visit once again.”

With massive number 1 hits and five studio albums under their belt, along with over 10 million records sold worldwide, A1 will surely give their Pinoy fans of all ages the once in a lifetime chance of seeing their idols back together on stage.

Take Control of Your Own ATM Debit Card Security with BDO Lock/Unlock

Wazzup Pilipinas!

There’s no better comfort to experience in life than knowing you are at the helm of your own financial security, especially if you are backed by an enabling technology provided by the institution you partner with.

BDO Unibank has found ways to give you peace of mind and give you—and only you—control of your own BDO Debit Card while you sleep blissfully through the night.

Using BDO Debit Card's Lock/Unlock Feature, BDO cardholders can prevent their BDO Debit Card (including Kabayan Savings and Junior Savers) from being used for transactions at Automated Teller Machines, point of sale terminals, and online purchases and payments without their knowledge and consent.

“The BDO Lock/Unlock security feature is very useful especially in protecting our cardholders from incidents of unauthorized transactions,” said Tomas Victor A. Mendoza, BDO senior vice president and head for Product Management-Transaction Banking Group. “This provides them better and more accessible control over their BDO Debit cards.”

To use the Lock/Unlock security feature of the BDO Debit Card through BDO Online Banking, simply do the following steps:

1.     Log-in to your BDO Online Banking account;
2.     Click on the New Security Feature button at the upper right portion of the home screen. You will then be directed to the menu containing all your BDO Debit Cards and their current status;
3.     Slide the toggle button of the card you wish to lock/unlock; and
4.     Enter the one-time password (OTP) that will be sent to your registered mobile number into Online Banking to confirm the change. You will get immediate confirmation on your request.

On the other hand, to use the Lock/Unlock security feature of the BDO Debit Card through BDO Mobile Banking, just follow these steps:

1.     Log-in to your BDO Mobile Banking account;
2.     Click on the “more” menu to access Security Management; and
3.     Slide the toggle button of the card you wish to lock/unlock. You will get immediate confirmation on your request.

There is also no limit on the number of times you can lock/unlock your BDO ATM Debit Card. This service if free of charge.

Locking your BDO Debit Card will only prevent card-based transactions. Thus, you can continue to perform many transactions through BDO Online, Mobile, and Phone Banking.

The Lock/Unlock security feature is just one of the several benefits of using BDO Online Banking.

An Italian in Manila: An Exhibition Tribute to Mrs. Silvana Diaz (43 years of Philippine Art Patronage)

Wazzup Pilipinas!

This coming September 1 will be an exhibition thrown by the closest artist friends of  Silvana Ancellotti-Diaz who will celebrate her 43 years of dedication and art patronage through the establishment of Galleria Duemila (the longest running commercial gallery) and organizing major exhibition and retrospectives throughout these years.

An Italian in Manila: An Exhibition Tribute to Mrs. Silvana Diaz (43 years of Philippine Art Patronage), traverses the friendship and the support Mrs. Silvana Diaz has catered to these artists. It is time to reverse the spotlight, to pull the theme around and reflect on all the help and support of all the cultural workers most specifically an Italian woman in Manila.

The participating artists are R.M de Leon, Jonathan Olazo and Trek Valdizno.
Jonathan Olazo graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts with a major in Painting in 1992. In 1994, he was awarded the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. An abstractionist painter, an art critic and a former Fine Arts instructor admits to the fact that writing is an integral part of his process as an artist. Growing up in the arts with his father being the late artist Romulo Olazo, Jonathan has magnified the use of light and texture in his abstraction process, his visual planes often blur out each other, a more subdued process than his early perpetual awe of Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline’s art.

Trek Valdizno is a graduate of the University of the Philippines with a degree in Fine Arts major in Painting. His works has been exhibited in Ayala Museum, Vargas Museum and Cultural Center of the Philippines. He also did commissioned and collaborative works in various international institutions in Australia, Hong Kong and France. His art is a conscious, spiritual practice that allows him to traverse through different brushstrokes resulting into large-scale compositions that engulf the viewer into its majesty and elegance. Breaking down the components of his works, you can see the fascination and careful consideration in the littlest-bit of elements.

R.M de Leon is the First Filipino awardee in Studio Arts in Painting in the Vermont Studio Center in Vermont U.S.A and was the 13th Artists Awardee of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1990. His current works drew inspiration in storybook characters and cartoons that he found graphic and playful. In figurativism, it is a straightforward identification of symbols and enigma. R.M intervenes through cutting imagery that force imagination and wonder to the otherwise familiar narrative of early childhood memories.

The exhibition will start on September 1 – 29, 2018. Opening Reception will be on September 1, Saturday at 4pm. For more information, you may contact us at 831-99-90 or 833-98-15, or visit our website at www.galleriaduemila.com and follow us on our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram): @galleriaduemila.
