Holcim Cited as Bulacan Top Tax Payer, Supports Davao Beautification Program

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In line with its commitment to helping the country build better with certainty, building solutions provider Holcim Philippines, Inc., reiterated its support for its communities’ development as it was recently recognized in Bulacan for tax contributions and supported a beautification program in Davao.

In January, the company’s plant in Bulacan was cited by the Norzagaray local government as one of the municipality’s Top Business Tax Payer for 2017. Mayor Geronimo Cristobal Jr. and his councilors gave the award during the State of the Municipality Address on January 22.

Holcim Bulacan Plant Manager Geert Kuiper thanked the municipality for the recognition and promised to continue being a partner in the community’s development.

"We believe that we have a responsibility to support the community by following the highest standards of environmental sustainability in our operations as well as sharing our values on integrity, inclusion, responsibility, care, and respect for each individual. These core values are demonstrated in this award," added Kuiper.

In Davao City, Holcim Philippines will donate 2,000 tons of cement for the city’s beautification projects in 2018. These materials will be used in building plant boxes in center islands, parks, and playgrounds in prime areas of the city.  The ongoing project is undertaken by the Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office for its cleanliness and landscaping initiatives.

Holcim representatives led by Davao Plant Manager Xavier Kennedy met with Mayor Sara Duterte in a signing ceremony last December 2017 and expressed the company’s commitment to continue supporting the city’s development.

“I hope that through this partnership, we can contribute further to the improvement of Davao. From all of us at Holcim Philippines, we assure the local government that we will continue to support the city in building better with certainty,” said Kennedy.

Mayor Duterte shared her gratitude for Holcim’s contribution to city development and assured support for the company’s future endeavors.

Wild Kinjo: A Couple Blogger's Wildest Dream

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The month of love may be on its last days but we won’t let it come to an end without sharing this inspiring story from a couple blogger who really went after their dreams.

Before becoming full time entrepreneurs and content creators, Gushcloud talent Arnie Villanueva (@arnievillanueva_) and Deo Montuerto (@deomontuerto) previously worked for a digital agency.

After a few years in the corporate world, the couple took the risk and chased their ultimate dream of opening their own restaurant. Together with Deo’s brother who is a chef, they started in a food park in Maginhawa while it was still on trend. It was a Japanese-Italian concept where they sold sushi and pizza. Unfortunately, a few months in, the food park encountered an accident and they had to close it down.

However, that did not stop Arnie and Deo from chasing their dreams. They started their journey by offering food deliveries, joining bazaars, taking a culinary course and even spent months looking for a new location for their restaurant. After several struggles and hard work, Wild Kinjo finally came to life.

Get to know the story behind this couple blogger’s venture through a short interview with Arnie.

How did you come up with the concept?

Our core cuisine is Japanese, but Deo wanted to offer something that would set us apart from all the restaurants in UST, so we added Latin American dishes. We also decided to make Wild Kinjo the prettiest and most Instagram-worthy restaurant in the area, so that everyone will have a pleasant eating experience.

What was your inspiration?

Ever since we started in the industry, our fulfillment is seeing people smile and nod when they get to taste our food. Those simple gestures inspire us to keep going.

What's your best seller and how did you curate your menu?

For rice bowls, people go back for our Pork Belly Churrasco (Php110.00), Chicken Thigh Yakimono (Php110.00), and Pork Katsudon (Php140.00). For sushi rolls, they love the Philly Cheesesteak (Php120.00) and Spicy Salmon (Php150.00). Lastly, you can't miss our Melona-ju (Php120.00).

Deo and I are very strict with the quality of the food. In curating our menu, we considered what the crowd would love to eat and what would make them go back to Wild Kinjo. We also noted the students' daily budget, so nothing goes above Php150.00.

What are the challenges you went through?

Aside from the accident and complications from our first business, we had a hard time finding the next "perfect" spot. Also, being in our early 20s, building an actual restaurant was a difficult leap for us. We knew nothing about construction before, had little knowledge with managing and operating a restaurant, and had a tight budget to work on.

Arnie and Deo had many doubts and fears when they were starting this business, but they stayed strong for each other to overcome all odds. Despite the hardships, love prevails. Since Arnie and Deo are the ones making all the decisions, they became wiser through the experiences. The daily grind in the kitchen is definitely made easier and more fun when they’re together.

Don’t forget to visit Wild Kinjo, located at P. Noval cor. Delos Reyes, Manila. You can also check out http://www.arnievillanueva.com/ and http://www.deomontuerto.com where they also share their daily experiences, travel adventures, and lifestyle journey.

Economist Intelligence Unit Global Economy Report

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Prolonged stockmarket fall and global trade war are biggest threats to global economy, finds new EIU report

• The two top risks to the global economy are a prolonged fall in major stockmarkets that destabilises the global economy, and a trade war provoked by US protectionism.

• The next risks in terms of probability and impact are, in joint 3rd and 4th place, an outbreak of hostilities in the South China Sea as a result of territorial disputes, and a major cyber-attack crippling corporate and government activities.

• Other key risks identified include a disorderly and prolonged Chinese slowdown, a major military confrontation on the Korean peninsula, and outright conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

A new report released today by The Economist Intelligence Unit identifies and assesses the top ten major risks to the global political and economic order. It finds that while the global economy has seen periods of high risk before, what is unique about this period are the risks associated with the US questioning its role in the world at the same time as China is becoming more assertive. But global risk is not just about the two biggest economies; risks also transcend boundaries on the political, military and financial spheres.

The report details how these various risks could morph into threats that destabilise large parts of the world. Each of the risks is not only outlined, but also rated in terms of its likelihood and its potential impact on the global economy. This enables distinction to be drawn between the so-called "black
swan" events of low probability and very high impact from those risks with a higher likelihood that need to be planned for in more detail.

Philip Walker, Risk Practice Director for The Economist Intelligence Unit, said: "There has arguably never been a period of such robust economic growth, low inflation and high employment that has been coupled with such a prevailing sense of unease with global conditions.

Policymakers, companies and populations are facing a wide range of major threats that could well upset the traditional global order in the coming years. It is important to assess and prepare for a likely tumultuous global environment in order not just to mitigate damage, but also take advantage of opportunities that will undoubtedly arise along the way."

Personalization and Timely Addition of New Features Make AccuWeather the World's Most Popular Weather App

Wazzup Pilipinas!

As Mobile World Congress gets under way, the global leader in weather information and digital media highlights innovative, user-focused approach to updating its award-winning iOS and Android apps.

As mobile technology leaders gather in Barcelona, Spain, for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) from February 26 to March 1, AccuWeather-the world's fastest-growing provider of weather forecasts and warnings and a global leader in digital media and weather-related big data-is highlighting its innovative, user-focused approach to introducing new features to its award-winning mobile apps for iOS and Android.

AccuWeather is the world's leading mobile weather information source, and receives more than 300 million unique monthly visitors from around the globe and over 35 billion data requests daily.

"Our users expect the most timely, accurate and personal weather information through the unique features that only AccuWeather is equipped to provide" said Kurt Fulepp, Chief Product Officer at AccuWeather. "Combining what people need and the Superior Accuracy™ they trust has made AccuWeather the No. 1 weather app worldwide, and we're constantly building on our foundation of innovation and precision to help users plan their days, and stay safe during severe weather events."

As a pioneer in the mobile weather category, AccuWeather continues to add design and usability enhancements to its apps, while pairing the introduction of major new features that align to the change of the seasons.

A tropical storm/hurricane map was introduced during the record-setting 2017 hurricane season. And as spring weather approaches, AccuWeather has introduced an extended 7-day Allergy Index. This fall, AccuWeather added its exclusive Snowfall Probability feature, which forecasts probable amounts of snow at a user's exact location. "To maintain our global leadership, our product development timeline ensures we're innovating ahead of each season," Fulepp said. "Seeing the engagement with our Snowfall Probability forecast has been very gratifying, and reminds us of how important timeliness and accuracy is to our users' lives."

During the 2017 hurricane season, AccuWeather app users were able to access new tropical storm map layers. These maps tracked storms using AccuWeather's proprietary hurricane models, which have been shown to be more accurate than those used by government weather services.

Other features added over the past several months can help users make critical decisions. "Our mission also includes providing, well ahead of time, the weather information people need to keep themselves and their families safe," Fulepp said. "For example, users located within 500 miles of a hurricane-status storm will see an alert on the AccuWeather app landing screen. Tapping the alert opens a map that shows the storm's predicted path, and provides access to additional details on rainfall, risk to life and property, and more."

Responding to user demand, AccuWeather recently introduced another unique feature: the extended 7-day Allergy Index. Users can access the new allergen forecasts conveniently on the home screen of the app.

In addition, AccuWeather has continued making the patented AccuWeather MinuteCast®-the leading minute-by-minute forecast of precipitation over the next two hours, hyper-localized to a user's exact street address or pinpointed to their GPS location-available in more regions throughout the world, including Europe, Australia, and North and South America. It will be rolled out to more locations across Asia in 2018, and AccuWeather is the sole partner of the Chinese government for minute-by-minute precipitation forecasts.

Last year, the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) recognized AccuWeather with two 2017 W3 digital awards-a Best-in-Show award for the AccuWeather iOS app and a Gold award for the AccuWeather Android app. This is the fourth time AccuWeather's apps have been recognized with W3 awards for providing a superior app experience.

The W3 Awards came on the heels of a study by independent industry tracker ForecastWatch, which confirmed the Superior Accuracy™ of the company's forecasts. This analysis of over 30 million forecasts-the most comprehensive study of forecast accuracy ever undertaken globally-concluded that AccuWeather had the highest level of accuracy in all three categories ForecastWatch verified, temperature, precipitation and wind.

The award-winning AccuWeather apps for iOS and Android provide the most accurate, actionable weather forecasts and warnings in an innovative, advanced mobile experience personalized to each user worldwide. The app also includes AccUcast™, the only crowdsourced weather feature that provides current weather conditions and hazards submitted by users in a real-time global animation map display, plus AccuWeather Real Feel®, Future Radar, and much more.

The AccuWeather app for Android phone and tablet users is free on the Google Play store. The AccuWeather iOS app is free on www.AppStore.com.

Headquartered in State College, Pennsylvania, AccuWeather has additional locations, including a Severe Weather Center in Wichita, Kansas, as well as locations in New York, Oklahoma City, Montreal, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing and Mumbai.

Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) officially sends off international rider Troy Alberto to Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (ATC) and the Honda Thai Talent Cup, premier international races in the Asian region that use the Honda NSF250R, a bike made especially for racing.

The send-off event coincided with the grand opening of the Flagship Shop in Makati City, one of Honda’s latest shops in the country. It gathered HPI executives, as well as bike enthusiasts to promote racing in the Philippines.

The only Filipino selected to take part in ATC, Alberto completed a series of try-outs last August 2017 and begun with test races in Malaysia last February 19 to 20. The race, which will run for several months, will have six rounds and will be held in various locations including Thailand, Japan, and Qatar and will begin on March 16.

“We believe in helping young, talented racers like Alberto by providing them a training ground to hone their skills and propel them to the most prestigious international competitions,” Mihara said.

In line with Honda’s globalized goals in motorsports, it also upgraded its Flagship Shop’s extensive lineup of services and activities for riders. The shop, which covers a total land area of 640 square meters, was the stage in which Alberto was formally introduced to Honda riders and local motorsports fans.

The Flagship Shop features an extensive, multi-rack display of Honda products, a well-appointed riders’ lounge, and a test ride area. These facilities are intended to showcase Honda’s cutting-edge motorcycles, with a sports segment complete with models that have MotoGP DNA engines designed and built with the power for racing. The shop also features innovative power products and genuine spare parts.

Now, it boasts of its enhanced features, such as the service and spare parts center, to accommodate all riders’ needs. HPI will also be hosting the Happy Honda Days activities at the Manila, Cebu and Davao Flagship Shops to invite more riders to visit and experience the shops’ offerings and give back. The activity will start on March 2 and will include free learn-to-ride and test ride sessions of Honda’s motorcycle models, as well as refreshments, games and giveaways.

“The Flagship Shop is more ready than ever for Honda’s growing community of riders with its improved extensive services,” Mihara said. “With our Happy Honda Days, you can visit the Flagship Shop on weekends to further experience these services.”
