Gem TV Asia Soars High This July with Top-Notch Entertainment

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Sony Pictures Television invited us to celebrate the best of Asian entertainment on Gem Night, held on July 5 Wednesday at 7pm at Dohtonbori, Cullinan Prime Building, 8 Missouri St, Greenhills, San Juan City.

GEM, the gem of Asian entertainment, marks a milestone in cable television programming as it celebrates its first year anniversary in the Philippines!

It will showcase the quirky world of Japanese variety shows, unique games, and more!

Dohtonbori serves the Okonomiyaki Experience where a server gets to cook our food infront of us. We may have smell like the dishes served, but the experience seeing our food up close and quickly getting edible is truly something rare.

To match with the theme of the show, the people behind the local Gem TV Asia held the Gem Night event at Dohtonbori which was attended by several members of the media, including bloggers.

Attendees were also asked to create our own paper-folding creations we all know as Origami. They were later used as our raffle entry to win some Gem TV Asia merchandise. However, I am not really that lucky with raffle draws so my work never got picked.

But since I was the early bird, I got to persuade the organizers to give me something as a reward for being so punctual..Lol!

Youth and Student Leaders File Ethics Complaint vs Aguirre as Fake News King

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Youth group Millennials Against Dictators [MAD] on Wednesday filed before the Ombudsman an ethics complaint against Secretary of Justice Vitaliano Aguirre for 'repeatedly making false accusations and allegations' and his 'refusal to take responsibility for his actions'.

The complaint also seeks Aguirre's removal from office.

Factory of fake news

"Aguirre is a factory of fake news", declared Shamah Bulangis, one of the complainants.

According to the complaint, Aguirre on June 7, 2017 made it appear in a press conference that Senators Bam Aquino, Antonio Trillanes as well as Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano and former Aquino administration political adviser Ronald Llamas were connected to the recent Marawi crisis.

He also alleged on February 23, that some embassy officials had been compromised by the Korean mafia and that the latter was involved in the killing of South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo.

In both cases, Aguirre refused to take responsibility for his false statements despite being called out in public, according to Bulangis.

Lying through gritted teeth

"Aguirre lies through gritted. He knows that. We want to send a message that this government must stop lying", quipped Karla Yu of MAD.

The complaint was also filed by Andrei Buendia of the Ateneo Debate Society, Anna Mercaldi of the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines, Fatima Tolentino and Nikki Nicolas of the San Beda College of Law Student Government, Julie Corridor of UP Diliman University Student Council, sociology student Rae Emmanuel Echaveria and Jonna Roldan of the De La Salle University-Manila.

DOTr Remits PHP25.78-B Income to Treasury

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Revenue-generating agencies and offices under the Department of Transportation (DOTr) have remitted a total of PHP25.78 billion to the National Treasury in 2016.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) makes up the bulk of remittances with PHP21.35-billion for 2016. It is followed by the: Maritime Industry Authority (PHP1.12-billion), Toll Regulatory Board (PHP934-million), Office of Transport Security (PHP831-million), and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (PHP689-million).

Income from all agencies has been transmitted to the Bureau of Treasury in full.

Remittances for the first quarter of 2017 amounting to PHP7.095-billion have also been turned over to government coffers. The LTO has so far contributed PHP5.76-Billion this year, followed by MARINA and OTS with PHP294-million each.

“The DOTr has one of the biggest appropriations and we have some of the most ambitious projects. But, what others do not know is that we are also contributing to the government in every way we can,” said Transportation Sectretary Arthur Tugade. “Pinaaayos ko ang koleksyon ng walang walang bahid ng korapsyon upang makapag-ambag kami ng tama at nararapat sa gobyerno,” he added.

Apart from this, three Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) under the DOTr were also among the top state-owned companies with the highest dividends remitted to the Treasury.

The Manila International Airport Authority remitted PHP2.26 billion, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines remitted PHP1.98 billion, and the Philippine Ports Authority remitted PHP1.95 billion worth of dividends for a total of P6.2-billion, almost half of the total PHP14.02-billion transmitted by GOCCs in May.

Allergic Reactions? It may not be in the Air After All

Wazzup Pilipinas!

With the changing of seasons, it is not surprising that there will also be an increase in the cases of allergies especially among children. As such, one of the ways to safeguard your child’s health is by identifying the root cause of the allergy. However, what many may not know is that allergies need not be caused by airborne particles. In fact, many allergic reactions are stimulated through skin contact.

According to Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (PSAAI), most people experience allergic reactions from dust and pollen. But some may also get allergies from mold spores, pet’s hair or dander, as well as from common irritants such as perfumes or hair sprays, laundry detergents, among others, that can be found sticking to your clothes.

These allergens may be present in clothes that have not been thoroughly rinsed or may be present in clean and newly washed clothes due to the molds that have accumulated in the basin of traditional washing machines.

Beko Philippines, one of the largest home appliance brands in Europe, noted that these hidden dangers often cause allergic reactions in both kids and adults alike.

Dyeun Zapanta, Sales and Marketing Head of Beko Philippines, underlined that even if your newly-washed clothes look neat and clean, it does not mean that they are free from allergens. Standard wash and dry cycles used in the traditional washing machines usually do not remove the allergens that we are exposed to in our everyday lives.

“Bacteria and allergens can survive and stay in the washing machine even though your clothes appear fresh and clean. With this, the brand innovated a technology that will guarantee you and your family’s protection against these allergens,” added Zapanta.

Beko integrated the Cool Hygiene 20°C Program in all of its washing machines. This technology is also designed, especially, for garments that require special care, such as baby clothing or garments for people who have allergies or are sensitive allergens. It allows you to maximum hygienic cleaning results even at a low temperature of 20°C. Thus, it keeps clothes looking as good as new while assuring your family’s health and protection.

Using additional drum movements and sensitive temperature control, this specially-revolutionized program provides an anti-allergic wash by maintaining the temperature at a certain level. This provides sensitive control throughout the wash cycle. Zapanta said further, “Health has always been one of Beko’s top considerations. As we continue to aspire as the ‘Official Partner of the Everyday,’ all of our products are innovated to give the best home solutions for your everyday challenges.”

Strengthening its local presence as it approaches its second year in the Philippines, leading European home appliance brand Beko further penetrates the Filipino market. Since 2015, Beko Philippines already doubled its distribution in the country. The company has also tripled its sales through enhanced and domineering product line that continuously meets the need of the Filipino market.

The World’s Smallest Homes

Wazzup Pilipinas!
As we grapple with the housing-backlog issue, perhaps these tiny yet sustainable homes may provide an answer

According to McKinsey Global Institute, addressing the worldwide shortage of affordable housing could cost $16 trillion by 2025. On the top 50 cities facing an affordability gap, New York tops the list, with Mexico City being the 15th hardest place to find a reasonably priced home. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and Manila also make the list.

Home-builders and owners are starting to think laterally in reaction to the shortage of available space. Tiny homes or “micro homes” are growing in popularity. But it is not just the global housing crisis that is driving the small house movement. Some people are moving for economic reasons, green living, simpler living, and the shared economy is making ownership of equipment less of a necessity. Lamudi has taken a look around the world and discovered some of the most inspiring micro homes across the planet.

Colorado Couple Go Small and Make a Film

Christopher Smith and his partner decided they had had enough of city living and decided they would live in a 124-square-foot (11.52 square meters) mobile in the middle of nowhere. It has a small galley kitchen, a sleeping loft, and for storage, they use built-in bookshelves. Their documentary is called “A Story About Living Small.”

German Efficiency
Renzo Piano, famed for London’s Shard, has recently turned his attentions to micro homes. “Diogene” is a prototype for a tiny house built for Vitra—a German furniture company. Amazingly, it collects, cleans, and reuses water, and supplies its power through solar modules. The house is just 79 square feet (7.340 square meters).

Tofarm Film Festival 2017: Planting the Seeds of Change

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Universal Harvester, Inc. (UHI) lights up the silver screen with six new and original films to mark the second edition of the TOFARM Film Festival.

“We are very pleased to announce that the TOFARM Film Festival 2017 bears new fruits that affirm Filipino film making genius,” says award-winner Maryo J. De Los Reyes, TOFARM Film Festival director.

“These exciting new films aim to capture a greater audience with their commercial and mass appeal, not to mention the inclusion of young and veteran actors among the cast members,” he adds.

The six official entries were chosen from more than a hundred scripts submitted to the screening committee. Shortlisting the entries alone was no easy task as the numbers of entrants rose to 113 from 76 submitted last year.

“The figures alone are a sure sign that we achieved one of our goals during the previous TOFARM Film Festival, and that is to elicit awareness and excitement among filmmakers to craft films that reflect the life of Filipino farmers,” De Los Reyes observes.
