Jerome S. Paye Proudly Represents Liberia in Upcoming Fight

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Liberian standout Jerome S. Paye is all geared up for his three-round flyweight encounter with Indonesian prospect Stefer Rahardian on the undercard of ONE: QUEST FOR POWER in Jakarta, Indonesia on 14 January.

Paye made his ONE Championship debut against China’s Li Hao Jie in February 2016, showcasing a well-rounded set of techniques and stifling his opponent with an array of striking combinations. However, he fell short in his bout against his Chinese foe by way of unanimous decision.

With the ability to make fights difficult for any opponent, Paye looks for career redemption as he is set to make his return to the ONE Championship cage in Jakarta, Indonesia to face Rahardian.

“I am very excited for my upcoming fight. I really want to show the fans here in Asia what I am truly capable of,” Paye said of his marquee match-up against Rahardian.

Coming off a decision setback nearly a year ago, Paye admitted that he is so eager to place himself on the winning track and claim his first win in Asia’s largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion.

“For every good fighter, it’s their big dream to get a win in an international MMA organization like ONE Championship. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that chance in my last fight. Now, I have to redeem myself in front of the whole world. That’s why I am so eager to get this win,” he stated.

IoT is the Weakest Link for Attacking the Cloud

Wazzup Pilipinas!

As cloud-based services continue to increase in scope and scale, there isn’t a single organization that wouldn’t benefit in some way from the cloud. Indeed, with the promise of lowering OPEX, while reducing or even abolishing CAPEX, the cloud can enable an organization to better focus on its core business, which is something that every C level executive wants to hear these days.

As a result, the cloud has seen immense growth over the last couple of years. But the security risks that arise from such a profound change are not to be taken lightly.

According to industry research, more than 95% of all enterprises today have at least one system on the cloud, with 71% of these companies having some of their assets running on a hybrid cloud. The cloud is here to stay, and has already shifted the way these companies conduct their business.

One of Fortinet’s predictions for 2017 is that the IoT will become the weakest link for attacking the cloud. That threat can come in many forms, as IoT devices have been shown to be more likely to contain easily exploitable vulnerabilities, making then a growing target for cybercriminals seeking, for example, to expand their botnets and weaponize them.

IoT-based DDoS attacks have already shown their power to disrupt business. The attack that recently hit the DYN infrastructure, for example, was so massive that it reached the 1Tb/s mark, with all traffic being sent from IoT devices.

Not only are IoT devices an attractive target because of their inherent insecurity, but also for the role they play in some organizations, such as CCTV Cameras, which can provide real time information about everything that is happening at a given location.

Igor Subora Feels Privileged to Represent Philippines in ONE Championship

Wazzup Pilipinas!

ONE Championship light heavyweight fighter Igor Subora might have been born and raised in Ukraine, but he found his second home 5,580 miles away from his birthplace.

Subora was captivated with the beauty of the Philippines when he first visited the country in 2007, leading him to his decision to migrate a year after.

Permanently residing in the Philippines opened a lot of opportunities for Subora, including a prizefighting career in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

As a fixture in the local MMA scene in the Philippines, Subora instantly became a household name. He remarkably conquered the country’s heavyweight landscape by finishing five of his first six assignments in impressive fashion.

Moreover, Subora captured a local MMA promotion’s heavyweight championship belt by way of a 49-second knockout in 2011 and reigned for three years undisputedly.

His success in the Philippine MMA circuit served as his footstool to be noticed by ONE Championship, which is widely regarded as the largest MMA organization in Asia.

Although he is not Filipino by blood and citizenship, Subora feels a sense of pride representing the Philippines on a global MMA stage like ONE Championship.

“The Philippines is my home away from home. It’s a beautiful country. I met my wife here. I also started my MMA career in this country. I am grateful for everything that this country has given me. To me, it’s an honor representing the Philippines in my international fights,” he stated.

Catch Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix Premiering this January

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Netflix has already established itself as a purveyor of quality shows. Through the years, the global internet television network has produced award-winning TV series and favourites like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, and The Crown. The streaming service is continuing their winning streak this 2017, starting with the release of the much-awaited A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Based on the international best-selling children’s novels by Daniel Handler, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans -- Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents’ mysterious death.

Handler’s original series spans 13 books, each very different from the previous one. Here, each episode spans half a novel, allowing viewers to delight in the details while still moving at a brisk, cinematic pace.

Leading the cast of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is award-winning actor, singer and television host Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Hedwig and the Angry Inch). On top of playing Count Olaf, the villain fans love to hate, Harris serves as a producer on the series.

With Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi’s strong directive, the Department of Energy (DOE) has instructed industry participants to ensure supply during the Malampaya Maintenance Activities from 28 January- 16 February and possible implementation of price mitigation measures.

“I have directed Usec. Wimpy Fuentebella to closely coordinate and spearhead the power sector’s activities in light of the Malampaya shutdown, Cusi said.

“We’ve already conducted a series of coordination meetings, simulations and exhausting all possible measures that we can implement to ensure supply and avoid price shocks.”

Thus, the DOE is closely monitoring the readiness and execution of the following activities to ensure power supply:

Telco Sets Out to Conquer Homes, on Track at Deploying 2M Home Broadband by 2020

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Globe Telecom is on track to hit its target of rolling out 2 million home broadband with speed of at least 10 Mbps by 2020 in line with its commitment to improve fixed internet in the Philippines. Unlike its mobile internet rollout, the strategy of Globe for home broadband is to provide reliable and high speed fixed internet one area at a time. The company announced that to date, over 260,000 home broadband lines have already been deployed.

Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said, “We are catching up on the deployment of infrastructure for home broadband, after focusing on mobile for many years. Globe is accelerating home broadband deployment and plans to roll out 400,000 ultra-fast broadband lines by end 2017. Progressive rollouts will be done within the next 3 years until 2020 to serve at least 2 million homes.”

Cu emphasized that Globe intends to redefine home broadband experience for Filipinos, making Globe the preferred brand of choice for homes just as the brand has grown to be the most pervasive for mobile. “The quality difference and improvements on fixed internet will really be felt, we will transform every home using a Globe broadband into an ultimate entertainment hub as our customers enjoy high speed connection plus an unbeatable portfolio of exclusive content,” said Cu.

Cu expressed his desire for government to step in and do the necessary action to enable the telecommunications industry. Cu said that the company could have rolled out more lines this year had it not been for the permitting and right of way challenges that telcos are always facing at the local government level. “With our recent campaigns, our local government are beginning to hear us, and to some extent, some are more responsive than others. As we move forward, we have every reason to be optimistic that we can improve the quality of home broadband in as many areas as possible,” he said.

Making a Difference Through the Gift of Giving

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For the children at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Pediatric Cancer Clinic and for those who lost their homes and belongings when Typhoon Nina hit the Bicol region last month, Christmas was certainly a challenging time which Globe Telecom turned into a chance to provide hope and courage.

“Christmas is a time for giving and spreading cheer. Thus, we at Globe take to heart the company’s purpose of creating a Globe of Good by encouraging our employees, customers, and partners to share their time, talent, and treasure to make positive changes in the lives of other people, in this case, young cancer patients as well as our kababayans who needed our care during disaster,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

A week into the holiday season, Globe already embarked on a campaign to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the PGH Pediatric Cancer Clinic to give its young patients a more equipped space ideal for their recovery. Through the campaign, Globe was able to cover the cost of renovation amounting to over P800,000.

But more than the monetary donations, Globe representatives and ambassadors also spent time and effort to treat the kids to a day full of surprises. From good food to exciting gifts, the company organized a fitting finale to its visit with the appearance of the 501st Legion dressed in full Star Wars Stormtrooper gear that provided entertainment to the children and their parents.

Turn yourself into a great writer!

Staring into a blank sheet of paper with a pencil in hand doesn’t make you a writer. Authorship begins when you learn how to use words in order to convey your ideas the way you want to be achieved by the audience. Obviously, many students do not bother themselves with writing nature as they benefit from ordering customized papers written by professionals. However, if you want to master the art of writing, follow these pieces of advice:

Form a habit of reading. Every day you have to read in order to educate yourself and blow up your word stock. That broadens your horizons and increases overall knowledge.

Practice in writing. Allow us to express a cliche'd cliched thought but practice makes perfect. The more you try to pen down your thoughts, the more precise they will be and the more polished your writing style will be.

Learn and use new words. When you meet a new word with interesting meaning, write it down to the notebook dedicated to this staff. Always add freshly learned words to the essays if they help to impress thoughts more to the point.

Practice in researching. Keep hand in searching data for certain topic and analyzing it using different methods of analysis. As a matter of fact, the discipline the topic belongs to should not necessary be field-specific to you. Thus you will not just practice but expand your perspective.

Familiarize yourself with different writing styles. Peculiar topics and essay types call for peculiar techniques and tones that are the most appropriate for the work with data.

Compare your work with others’ papers.
It can be really helpful to look through essays written by professionals and your peer students to compare the quality.

Do not depend on the software spellcheck. Spellcheck misses misuse of words as well as some typos and sentence errors that may spoil the whole impression of the paper. Always proofread the text, read it aloud and run it though the plagiarism-detection software – no one tolerates plagiarized content in the educational institutions.

DOE Ups Power Supply to Typhoon-hit Areas

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The DOE and its partners are continuously bringing back power supply to typhoon-affected areas in Southern Luzon and Eastern Mindanao.

“We are maximizing our assets and resources for the resumption of electricity in the soonest possible time in the hard-hit areas, where hundreds of distribution poles went down,” Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported that all transmission facilities affected by Typhoon Nina have already been restored bridging generation facilities to distribution lines in the concerned towns and provinces in Bicol as of Jan. 9.

Power was also 100 percent restored in homes in the provinces of Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Camarines Norte and Sorsogon.

Meanwhile, restoration of power facilities continues in the provinces of Quezon (84.62%), Oriental Mindoro (91.18%), Camarines Sur (58.9%), Albay (47.75%) and Catanduanes (18.92%).

Restoration of households already reached 76.34% or 1,311,828 households, in which 406,578 are still up for restoration.

There are only three transmission facilities in Siargao, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur that were affected by Tropical Depression Auring, according to the NGCP report.

These transmission facilities namely Butuan-Placer 138kV line 1, Placer-Madrid 69kV line, and Placer-Surigao 69kV line are already being restored.

“The energy sector is united in promoting consumer welfare by providing power supply to our kakabayans affected by the typhoons in the soonest possible time,” Cusi said. “We always have to be ready and prepared since these typhoons will continue to hamper our energy systems. We are trying to come up with better and effective measures every time we are faced with such challenges."

Traslacion 2017: Post Event Report on the Philippines' Biggest Religious Event

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Philippines continue to hold the Traslacion eventhough there are so many reasons why it sends the wrong lessons to our people, especially the youth. The January 9 procession reenacts the image's Traslación (literally, "transfer") in 1787, or solemn relocation to the Minor Basilica from its original shrine in what is now Rizal Park.

A Spaniards' galleon was partly burned wherein the more than life size (sculpture) image of Jesus Christ of Nazarene was on board. Miraculously, the sculpture suffered lesser damage but has changed its original color into black. That was the original story about the "Black Nazarene."

CBCP Public Affairs Executive Secretary Fr. Jerome Secillano says the statue of the Black Nazarene was brough to the Philippines in the 17th century, but the devotion to statue only started in the 1950s. He says some of the sacrifices devotees go through during the Traslacion are part of the "purification process" they identify with on a personal level.

Less in number but not in fervor. There was a substantial drop in the number of devotees for this year's Traslacion. Still, tens of thousands make a vow – or panata – to take part in the most massive display of Catholic faith in the Philippines. This tradition is distinctly Filipino and is not part of the basic traditions of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide. The people's unwavering devotion to the Black Nazarene is a tedious and lengthy task with the Traslacion covering a 6.9-kilometer route starting from the Quirino Grandstand and ending at the Quiapo Church.

Devotees jostle for a chance to get near the Black Nazarene. The cross-bearing statue is believed to have healing powers, in the hope that the touching of towels would bless them and heal their illnesses. Helping pull the ropes of the carriage also has some sort of significance as the sacrifice is expected to bear bountiful rewards.

Anthony Engelen Prefers Step-by-Step Process in Securing Title Shot

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Mixed martial arts standout Anthony Engelen (5-2) acknowledges that there will be no shortcuts to achieving his dream of becoming a world titleholder in ONE Championship.

Engelen stressed that he is not in a hurry and would rather take the long road to a championship crack than prematurely contend for the gold-plated strap.

According to Engelen, there are certain aspects of his overall game that he has to improve and keep an eye on before getting an opportunity to vie for the coveted ONE Featherweight World Championship belt.

“I would like to remind myself to keep growing as a fighter. I always try to watch all my fights and constantly evaluate myself. I want to improve in the things that I was not happy about and work harder on it every time,” he said.

The 31-year-old Dutch Indonesian fighter believes that he has to prove himself worthy of a title shot as ONE Championship’s featherweight bracket has a long list of contender.

ONE Championship has a stacked featherweight division, which has been often described as a shark tank.

Vaughn Donayre Expects ‘Win-Hungry’ Vincent Latoel at One: Quest for Power

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Filipino fighter Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayre is not taking Vincent Latoel lightly as he expects his Dutch-Indonesian opponent to have a must-win mentality when they square off against each other on the undercard of ONE: QUEST FOR POWER in Jakarta, Indonesia on 14 January.

Latoel, a highly-decorated kickboxer from Deventer, Netherlands, aims to snap his two-fight losing skid at the expense of Donayre.

The 37-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran stumbled in two of his ONE Championship outings in 2016, yielding to former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku in February before suffering the same fate at the hands of Filipino standout Edward Kelly last August.

According to Donayre, it is a no-brainer that Latoel is driven to put himself back on the winning track.

“It’s given that he wants to win because he lost two of his fights in 2016. I expect him to be hungry for that win,” he said.

Even though he has a win-hungry foe in front of him on fight night, Donayre is not allowing Latoel to ruin his goal of having his hand raised in triumph.
