Another Top Podium Finish for Team Suzuki Pilipinas as the SAC Concludes

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Team Suzuki Pilipinas once again made the country proud as they conclude the Race 2 of the last leg of the Suzuki Asian Challenge (SAC) at the top spot. The Philippine national anthem was played for the first time at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand as Mario Borbon gave the Philippines its very first win in motor sports at the said track. This is also Team Suzuki Pilipinas’ 2nd championship title at the SAC this season.

Team Suzuki Pilipinas’ performances have improved greatly over the months. With a podium win at every leg of the race, they proved to be a strong force to reckon with. Held last December 2 to 4, 2016, the team showed an overall impressive race.

30 year-old Mario Borbon proved that his years of experience and perseverance at the race track will one day bring him his 1st top position at the SAC podium finishing with a time of 2:16.781. Coming from behind during the practice race, the Visayas rider showed his improvement during Race 1 as he led the pack in one of the laps of the race. More hopeful on the second and final round, he was able to maintain a good position during the race together with EJ Sobretodo who was also leading during the 5th and 6th lap. However, Sobretodo crashed due to a collision with a Sri Lankan rider during his last turn leaving Borbon to lead the remaining of the race.

Meanwhile, the very strong Mindanao rider April King Mascardo managed to stay at the 6th Place. Sobretoto, Mascardo and Borbon’s final standing is at 5th, 6th and 7th place respectively. The final round of the SAC ended gloriously for Team Suzuki Pilipinas with a sweet victory for our fellow Filipinos. -

Okay na si Lolo: Coca-Cola Agos Program Brings Renewed Hope to War Survivor

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Japanese airplanes were dropping bombs across Pili, Camarines Sur. People in the city fled the plains and went to different areas to save themselves, to save their families. Some ran to the fields, while the others decided to settle and create homes near or at the mountains. However, the safety of one’s life had a price to pay: there was no water.

Barangay Del Pilar is one of the communities that cradled the families who escaped the horrors of those bombings. Located at the upper section of the mountain in Baao, Camarines Sur, it is divided into three zones. As of 2014, it has become home to a total of 75 households, with a population of 384.

Among the residents is Cenederio Lopez. He is 74 years old, lives alone, and has never left Del Pilar since he was born. More than knowing the barangay like the back of an old friend’s hand, he never imagined in his lifetime that water would someday become easily available to them.

“It was really a sacrifice just to fetch water,” Lolo Cenederio shares. He recalls that it was a daily dilemma for most of his life, rooting back to when he was still a child. Whenever his family would run out of water, his father and older brothers would be up before the crack of dawn to fetch water with their containers and a carabao. Years later, it was still a problem, and it became part of the routine that Lolo Cenderio became accustomed to.

Because of his old age, he could no longer hike the way he did when he was younger. What he would do is to buy a water container worth PhP20 from his neighbors, however, this exchange came with a price, he still needed to do an hour’s worth of walking. The situation was simple: he either walked and carried the containers on his shoulders, or there would be no water at all.

An Abusive and Toxic Relationship

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros' statement on VP Robredo's decision to resign as HUDCC Chair

I fully support Vice President Leni Robredo's decision to resign from President Rodrigo Duterte's cabinet. It was an abusive and toxic relationship, after all.

From the start, Vice President Robredo was not given enough support to fully exercise her task as the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Chairperson. As if by design, she was intended to fail. Worse, as a woman, she was disrespected and objectified on many occasions, by no less than the President himself. Her way of dressing was made object of sexist remarks, she was subjected to inappropriate advances and was even reduced to well-rounded knees.

Even the manner on how the Vice President was ordered not to attend future Cabinet meetings was intolerably disrespectful of the position she holds. It was cavalier and reeked of machismo. It was meant to denigrate Vice President Robredo one last time. It was meant to show that she is unworthy of the Chief Executive's time and any serious consideration.

Of course President Duterte has all the right to remove people from his Cabinet whom he thinks are incapable of implementing his brand of governance. The President and Vice President's "irreconcilable differences" are plain enough.

Yet, while others were removed for their inadequacies, Vice President Robredo was barred from future cabinet meetings because she dared oppose the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, extra-judicial killings, reimposition of death penalty, lowering the age of criminal liability, and misogynistic attacks against women. She was punished for doing the right things.

I also worry that a Cabinet where a healthy divergence of opinion is not allowed is just an old boys’ club. This demonstrates once more President Duterte's intolerance for dissent.

I stand with Vice President Robredo in her fight to defend human rights, freedom and democracy. I also join her in safeguarding the will of the people from dark forces that want to steal the Vice Presidency, rewrite history and restore a corrupt and authoritarian past.

I am confident that the public is behind the Vice President too. The people will more than make up for the support President Duterte and his Cabinet failed to give her. Vice President Robredo has fallen from the Cabinet into the arms of the people.

Rara: Art and Tradition of Mat Weaving in the Philippines Book Launch

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Pateros, the little municipality situated in the middle of three big and flourishing cities - Pasig, Taguig and Makati. As what Elmer Nocheseda jokingly said during his talk at his Rara book launch held on November 30, 2016 at Villa Monica in Pateros, we may have a hard time finding certain establishments within the municipality using the Waze app.

The Rara book launch was a celebration not only to announce to the public the availability of the new book, but also to honor and pay tribute to the book author and historian who neatly documented the facts about mat weaving in the country.

The Philippines is so full of creatively talented individuals that has contributed in putting us in the global map - meaning, we have become synonymous to where achievers and leaders mostly originate. It is not only in boxers or beauty queens that has made us famous in the yes of the world, but also with the presence of artists like painters, sculptors, theater actors, writers, and a lot more. The Philippines has a lot more to offer than Pinoy teleseryes or blockbuster mainstream movies with rehashed and repetitive plots.

Elmer Nocheseda, or you may know him as Elmer Gragera-Ibañez Hernandez-Nocheseda on Facebook, is a mat cognoscente and an inveterate researcher. He has recently released his third book entitled Rara: Art and Tradition of Mat Weaving in the Philippines.

Tech Tips to Help Students Study Smarter

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Technology is rapidly developing, and it is used pretty much everywhere. It helps us extensively with our work, studies, and entertainment. Difficult to imagine modern life without gadgets.

The concept of education has received some alterations as well, with online courses gaining more popularity as the choice method of accumulating more knowledge.

Studying habits have to adapt to keep up with the times as well. Having a laptop or a tablet is a tremendous asset to college and university students, since compiling and reviewing massive amounts of information is not an easy task. Especially if done manually. The internet helps with that aspect immensely, but it can also prove to be a common distraction.

Some of these developments prompted educational institutions to perform changes of their owns; with libraries being switched over to digital formats. The need to visit a traditional library is gone, no longer are you required to rummage through countless books and carry them around like dead weight. A perk of the digital age! You can go online and find what you need without any hassle whatsoever; it is very convenient.

You are given these tools and options, and they are great if you intend to study harder. But, studying harder does not always mean becoming smarter as a result.

So, how does one study "smarter?"

The main crux of it is to ease the life of a student by using technology and cool, creative, yet simple techniques.

How to Crush it on CouchSurfing

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Traveling is one of the most life-affirming activities ever to exist. It can truly be a rush, adapting to a new setting and circumstances. There is no better substitute if you wish to broaden your horizons, learn about distant cultures and meet new people.

We gravitate towards new experiences, and couch surfing allows to do just that.

Ever since the dawn of time, hotels existed for a reason — to provide lodging for weary travelers and to become a financial burden for tourists. Hotels are expensive, especially when the vacation season is in full swing.

You have friends all over the world. You just haven't met them yet.

And it all starts by finding a couch. In a different country. That belongs to a perfect stranger.

CouchSurfing aims to provide an alternative to expensive accommodations. It is a system, a tool and an app that allows users to organize and provide "surfing" or homestay options to like-minded people all around the world. It is both a social media site and an accommodation sharing service.

Every single user is encouraged to complete their profile page and provide useful information about themselves. This, in turn, creates a database that allows guests to browse it and find a suitable host who will provide short-term bedding.

The biggest difference that separates CouchSurfing from other accommodation services like Airbnb is that CouchSurfing is free of charge. Guests are not required to compensate hosts for the lodging; homestay is provided at no cost.
But in some cases, it doesn't stop people with relentless entrepreneurial spirits.
I'll provide more details on the topic of dangers, nuances, and peculiarities, but a bit later.

What is CouchSurfing good for?

CouchSurfing fills a particular niche, like those services which provide an answer to common plights like "Help me write my essay." Reduced strain on your pockets means that you will get to enjoy both the social and the traveling aspect a bit more freely.

A refreshing development, since many capitals of the world aren't regarded as being cheap, but their allure is sometimes too strong to deny. Some of them are vital to visit at least once in a lifetime. In any case, you can't put a price on cultural exchange and enjoyable experiences.

Since getting the complete picture of the service at a cursory glance is nearly impossible, here are a few pointers you need to keep in mind if you intend to become a guest or a host. This article aims to shed light on the exciting topic of CouchSurfing.
You won't be spending a small fortune to stay at the hotel, so CouchSurfing is ideal for students and young adults.

So what does it do?

You gain the ability to find a host from a functionality standpoint easily.

You can use the service to contact the host and ask them to provide a short-term homestay. That is how the site functions, you will be staying with locals who will graciously offer you a room or an apartment.

Great so far, since you get to meet new people and make friends. On top of that, you will gain additional insight and understand more about the place you're staying at.

But there may be a downside to that, by co-living in a house or an apartment of your host, you become more reliant on them and their daily routine.
You will, most certainly, have to adapt your sleeping and other habits to fit their regime. Won't be a problem if you share interests with them, however.

Even though finding a place to stay can be easy from a technical standpoint, you may need to spend an inordinate amount of time to find a "perfect" host. It doesn't matter if it's a major city or a more modest one in scale, this concept applies either way.

Some Apartments Can Be Misrepresented

Even though hosts usually provide detailed information on the state of their apartment or a house, some people tend to omit this. The state of rooms can vary widely. Some hosts may even think that having a small hammock for a bed is sufficient enough. Be sure to examine photos before deciding on a host.

Continuing on the topic of habits and culture differences, some hosts may have a tendency to do something out of the ordinary. A difference of culture, eccentricity or a wicked sense of humor — you decide. But be prepared that they will walk around scantily clad, drinking and swearing. It may not even be a significant disadvantage, but be ready for hilarious interactions in any case. And potential harassment, but this mostly applies to unaccompanied females.

What is essential to keep in mind?

Before you start using the service and get all the benefits of surfing couches, you are required to register on the website.
Millions of people have already provided their details to participate in the system.
But like any other system, there are rules and regulations. To get the most out of CouchSurfing, you may need to put in some additional effort. Here are a few defining details for hosts and guests alike.

1) Feedback
Recommendations, reviews, feedback and responses build a foundation on how the guest perceives a host.
Misrepresentation is always a risk, but a person with no feedback can be just as charming and entertaining as people with countless reviews.
Minimize your risks by actually reading up on the person.

2) Fill in Additional Details
If you want to become a host, it is vital to input personal information like gender, age, etc. Photos of yourself and your apartment will help greatly. Try putting some personality in your photos, that way other potential guests can see that you're a person just like everyone else.

3) Reply Rate and Reply Time
Reply rate is displayed as a percentage, it tells how good the host is at responding to requests, and response time tells how long it usually takes.

Don't draw premature conclusions just yet; those numbers depend on the location of the host. If it's a major tourist destination, they physically may not be able to respond promptly.

4) Languages
There are many languages spoken all over the world. But when it comes to Couchsurfing, your main means of communication will most certainly be English. If the host doesn't share a language with you, there may be alarge barrier in communication. Make sure that your host/guest speaks your language, it a prerequisite for an enjoyable stay.

5) Personal Approach
Requests are usually sent in by guests a few days before departure. If you end up sending it a couple of months in advance, you may be met with an indefinite "I don't know."

Since you will be spending time with a person you barely know, why not find out some relevant details about them in your request?

Mass produced requests have a high rejection rate. So make sure to personalize your emails. Be polite, respectful and speak to your host on a first name basis.

Tell a bit about yourself; it will be a huge bonus if you share interests with them. And always remember about etiquette.
Leaving and receiving references is a huge part of the process.

So, in summary, if you like to travel, meet people and enjoy authentic local lifestyles. CouchSurfing may just be the thing for you. No matter the capacity you want to fill on CouchSurfing, by being a guest or a host, remember to represent yourself adequately. Exercise caution and safety in everything you do. Have fun!

Air Travel - Advantages and Disadvantages

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Humanity never lost its ability to dream and always wanted to achieve that which was impossible at first. Flight is one such thing. Countless myths and legends are based around the idea of flying - like that of Daedelus and Icarus. History of flight is extensive and filled with incredible mishaps and breakthroughs.

From initial efforts in ancient China to Leonardo Da Vinci's flying machine and to the legacy of Wright brothers - who are known for the first recorded flight in 1903. All of these developments are significant in illustrating the strong desire humankind had, the urge to stop being bound to the ground and explore unseen heights.

Ever since humanity learned to fly air transport improved by leaps and bounds, in massive increments.

Aerial vehicles have particular uses now — military and transportation.

Many varieties if air transport were developed over the years — helicopters, planes that range from small ones like Cessnas to huge airliners like the Airbus and to military marvels like the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (it holds the record as the fastest aircraft for about 40 years at this point).

The less conventional ones – hang gliders, hot air balloons, zeppelins, blimps, and parachutes - can also be used as a means of transportation, but for the sake of this article their characteristics will not be included in the advantage/disadvantage rundown.

When it comes to traveling, every kind of transport comes with its set of pros and cons.

What are the advantages of air transport?

Speed, Mobility, and Punctuality

Airliners are not balloons or blimps. The have a streamlined design, and powerful jet engines allow them to reach tremendous speeds. Cruise liners travel at around 80% of Mach 1 (M1 is the speed of sound – 1,236 km/h; 768 mph).

No land vehicle can come close to air transport regarding sheer speed and consistency.

Maglev (magnetic levitation) trains and railways can get very fast, but they're still not there yet and won't be for quite some time.

Speed is a factor not only due to jet engines, but there are also no roads or limiting factors in terms of mobility. The route is a direct line from point A to point B. There is no delay in procuring clearance, and there is no concept of traffic. No railways, no roads, no additional construction of any kind is required, apart from the airstrips.

On the other side of mobility spectrum, there are helicopters. They only need a small landing pad to take off as do some VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) vehicles like Harrier jets.

Planes and helicopters are used in agricultural applications (spreading pesticides or other pest deterrents to save a harvest of crops) and to combat raging forest fires.

Air transport is a prompt and convenient way to travel and transport goods.

The Future of Education is Online

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We live at a wondrous time. As technology spreads, connectivity does so in accordance as well. Stable Wi-Fi hotspots, broadband and fiber-optic connections have made it much easier to browse the world wide web at own leisure and learn a thing a two in the process.

The Internet is the biggest source of information, readily available to everyone. A recent surge in the popularity of online courses paints an intriguing picture for the future of education as a whole. There are countless benefits to online courses, although there are significant difficulties the idea still needs to overcome. Many challenges remain before distance learning can enter a period of maturity. The move away from personal tuition will be lengthy, but exciting.

What is an online course and how does it differ from a traditional one?

An online course delivers most of its educational content via the web, unsurprisingly. The proportion doesn't entirely have to be a flat 100%; three-quarters is usually enough to quantify a course as an online one.

There are three other types of courses — traditional (no online delivery), web optimized/enhanced (roughly a quarter of content is delivered via the internet) and a hybrid (mixed approach, falls between web-optimized and fully online regarding the proportion of its delivery). Percentages may vary, but the main idea still stands, the bulk of an online course is delivered directly to the student without any delay or overhead with the help of the internet.

An online course is a very directed learning experience, designed to be accessed at any time, any place.

One Heavyweight World Champion Brandon Vera Stops Hideki Sekine

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship (ONE), once again electrified the capacity crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. ONE: AGE OF DOMINATION showcased the Philippines’ top mixed martial arts (MMA) talent along with the world’s best fighters. In the main event, Brandon Vera retained his ONE Heavyweight World Championship with a dominant victory over Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine.

In the main event, ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera made easy work of previously unbeaten Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine, winning by technical knockout just minutes into the first round. From the opening bell, Vera began to land a series of solid blows on Sekine, who took Vera’s best shots quite well. Moments later however, a thudding body kick connected for Vera, sending Sekine crashing to the canvas clutching his midsection. Vera then put on the finishing touches with punishing strikes from the top.

In the co-main event of the evening, ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes of Brazil retained his title, overcoming a nose injury he suffered in the third round to defeat young rising star Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Australia. Both Fernandes and McLaren were very evenly matched, with each having their moments over the course of the five-round title tiff. While McLaren proved to be a live challenger, Fernandes dug deep to show true championship mettle, doing just enough to earn the split decision victory in a grueling affair.
