Art of the Loom: Weaving the Story That Is the Binakul

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Binakul is a textile pattern handwoven on a small scale in Ilocos. Also known as binakel, binakael, or binakol, binakul (meaning “twill” in Ilocano) is a variation of the abel. Binakul can be easily recognized by its uniform, interlocked geometric patterns that result in psychedelic optical art designs, which are said to represent the waves of the sea and, among indigenous peoples of the Cordilleras, protection against malevolent spirits.

On display at Art of the Loom are examples of antique and modern binakul. Designs range from whirlwinds and stars to fans, cat’s pawprints, and capiz windows. Binakul is traditionally used as blankets but, most recently, designers have explored its use in contemporary fashion and personal accessories.

Part of Art of the Loom is a showcase of modern-day applications of binakul, such as binakul and snakeskin clutches fashioned by couturier Pepito Albert, a modern lamp by designer Olivia d’Aboville, boleros by Victoria de Borja, flats by Ruby Diaz Roa, and creations by fashion designer Jojie Lloren especially made for the exhibit.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In support of Republic Act 9512, which aims to promote environmental awareness through education, Epson Precision (Philippines) Inc. EPPI visited Inosluban-Maraouy, Bulacnin, Pinagkawitan, Fernando Airbase (Lipa City), and Bolbok National High Schools to educate students on how to properly treat and dispose items that contain mercury. Wazzup Pilipinas!

Yahoo Philippines today announced the 2013 Year in Review (YIR), an annual look back at top trends and stories that reflect the daily habits of internet users in the Philippines. The Year in Review section on Yahoo news shows the most searched topics, celebrity searches, viral stories and unforgettable sports moments, based on what internet users in the Philippines looked for in 2013.

YIR combines search trends and editorial selections of what users read, recommended and shared most on the Yahoo network in the Philippines in 2013.

Topping this year’s search on Yahoo Philippines was Typhoon Yolanda, the super typhoon to have made landfall, and claimed thousands of lives. Millions of people used the Yahoo network to get breaking news stories and in-depth coverage on rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, the 2013 elections, pork barrel scam, the Sabah standoff and the Zamboanga crisis were also among the top searches in Yahoo Philippines.

Dyip by Artistang Artlets : Playing the Blame Game

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The conflict between the Philippine government and its people has been evident even before the country gained its independence. Rebellions, revolutions and protests are a big part of what the country came to be.

For their 1st minor production this school year, UST’s Artistang Artlets staged Christian Tordecillas’ play entitled “Dyip” (2006), directed by Jerome Paul Ladan and produced by Therese Renee Janine Zialcita.

It portrayed the ongoing feud between the Philippine government and its citizens. The play started with an old woman in a jeepney who was refused of help in handing in her fare. She then goes on ranting that the Filipinos today are lazy, regardless if they are educated or not. When the driver finally asks her for her fare, she refuses to move so she could hand it, making her one of the lazy Filipinos she ranted about. As the play progressed, two high school students – Dexter, a supporter of rallies and Clara, Dexter’s friend who, unlike him, is against rallies – came inside the jeepney as well.

Baby and Family Expo 2013 : A Gathering of Family Preferred Brands

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We pamper our babies and young children during these times when they are vulnerable. They are so dear to us during this stage that we try to give them the best that money can buy.

Our kids are most tolerable during the age of infancy, toddler and that peculiar stage when we all cherish the moment of being a parent because it is inevitable that when they grow older, they will be a little shy to express freely their emotions.

A hug and a kiss will be less promising infront of a crowd or their peers. So let us take advantage of their innocent years while their are still fond of our "unli" embraces and public display of affection.

The Baby and Family Expo 2013 shares with the public an opportunity to buy the most affordable quality products for our children and also learn from the many talks from the invited knowledgeable speakers who are parents themselves, plus some child celebrities to add some fun and surprises for all.

Earth Day Jam On Tour: A Postscript

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Climate change is a pressing reality. With typhoons, floods, earthquakes and other environmental disasters looming, our Mother Earth has obviously chosen to cry out loud. But does the general public know the different causes of these calamities? Do they even care? Or has the all too familiar "it won't happen in my lifetime" concept gotten into everyone's heads?

The Philippines' longest running environmental awareness concert, Earth Day Jam, has brought together some of the country's biggest pop music artists, celebrities, public personalities, Socio-Civic groups, concerned companies and of course the general public for over 13 years now.

Through his musical tribute for Mother Earth, they address the most pressing environmental issues affecting the globe, most especially the Philippines, and push for aggressive community based and individual centered participative action. More than just a concert event, they continuously bombard their audience (predominantly teenagers) with audio visual presentations highlighting the importance of environmental preservation.
