Immerse in Bacolod’s “Colors and Flavors,” an Art Display at JT’s Manukan Grille BGC

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

(From L-R) Yuri Stegeman, FilipinoArt.ph founder; Carlos Chuidian, JT’s Manukan Grille BGC owner; and Joel Torre, JT’s Manukan Grille founder)

LFilipinoArt.ph, an online art gallery supporting Filipino artists, collaborates with JT’s Manukan Grille, a chicken inasal restaurant chain, via the art display titled “Colors and Flavors of Bacolod.’’ Ongoing until Oct. 15, 2023, the art display features acrylic paintings of local artists Roselle Manalastas and Jason Ray Zabat at JT’s Manukan Grille in 32nd Ave. cor. Bonifacio Blvd. BGC.

“Colors and Flavors of Bacolod” portrays Bacolod City’s cultural heritage, seizing its essence through vibrant colors and vivid emotions that showcase the city’s annual celebration of the Masskara Festival. The artists’ creations draw deep inspiration from the world-renowned street festival, which stands as a symbol of the Negrenses’ resilience, born during the sugar crisis of the 1980s. Joel Torre, the owner of JT’s Manukan Grille, wants to use his chains of restaurants as a safe, creative space for Filipino artists.

“Our original al-fresco setup wasn’t ideal for displaying traditional visual art due to dust. Nonetheless, we hosted performances and showcased films, aiming to turn the place into an arts hub. We are also transforming our branch in Boracay into an arts community, initiating storytelling, music, painting, and filmmaking workshops. This is our way of giving back to the community.”

The art display’s setup: the artworks at the top are Roselle Manalastas,” while the
paintings hung on the wall are Jason Ray Zabat’s.

Artist Jason Ray Zabat and Joel Torre pose with the former’s artworks: (L) “Mr. Juan
Tilaok,” inspired by Mr. Torre, and (R) “Mutya ng Masskara.”

Jason Ray Zabat explains the creation process of “Mr. Juan Tilaok"

Jason Ray Zabat, FilipinoArt.ph artist, shared his creation process of “Mr. Juan Tilaok,” an intricately layered acrylic painting inspired by Mr. Torre. Zabat said, “The chicken, embodying the restaurant and Mr. Torre, was vital in shaping the artwork. The attire reflects Mr. Torre’s artistic identity, enhanced by cultural elements like the Sarimanok-inspired tail and natural motifs of flowers and vines on the coat.”

Zabat’s artwork has also incorporated Bacolod’s famous delicacies, such as inasal, piaya, and kansi, adding depth to the artwork’s narrative. Before this art display, FilipinoArt.ph also partnered with other local establishments to promote artists and expand its reach. Its initial collaboration was with Brewed Specialty Coffee, a third-wave coffee shop in Pasig City. As part of the coffee shop’s second-anniversary celebrations, FilipinoArt.ph hosted an art display titled “Sining at Kape,” featuring the works by PasigueƱo artists.

Cinemalaya: Props up artistic integrity, illuminates Filipino filmmakers' visions of nationhood

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival has pushed the boundaries for creative expression in the last 19 years by avidly propping up artistic integrity and illuminating the Filipino filmamakers’ visions of nationhood.

Since 2005, Cinemalaya has continued to discover, encourage and support the cinematic works of upcoming and veteran Filipino filmmakers who boldly articulate and freely interpret the Philippine experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.

“Ang Cinemalaya ay hindi lamang panonood ng pelikula kundi rin ito’y pakikisalamuha dun sa mga tinatawag nating mga pangkulturang manggagawa, cultural workers or creative workers ng cinema, tulad ng filmmakers, directors, cinematographers, actors,” Cinemalaya Festival Director Chris Millado shared in an interview during the Cinemalaya 19 opening night held at the PICC.

Online influencers pose on the red carpet during the opening night of Cinemalaya 19 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

[Cinemalaya is not just watching a movie but also engaging with what we call cultural workers or creative workers of cinema, such as filmmakers, directors, cinematographers, actors.]

Director Millado shared that unlike normal film viewing in a cinema where people will just enter the moviehouse and leave afterward, in Cinemalaya, the audience will be able to interact with the present filmmakers of the film, those who worked in front and behind the camera, and ask them about their insights of the film and things about filmmaking.

To date, Cinemalaya has supported and promoted the production of Filipino full feature independent films and short films. Many of these films have won awards in local and international competitions and festivals. Through the annual festival, Cinemalaya has showcased over 1,000 works by independent filmmakers including full feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films.

Regional filmmakers dominate this year’s festival

According to Cinemalaya Festival Director Chris Millado, regional filmmakers outnumbered the filmmakers from Manila joining this year.

“Meron tayong mga gawa at hindi lamang maririnig din natin ‘yung mga wika galing sa Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Bicol. Kaya talagang napakaraming kwento ‘yung nailahad at talagang ibang-iba ang lasa ng bawat pelikulang inihain sa atin ng ating filmmakers.” Festival Director Chris Millado shared during an interview at the opening night held at PICC.

[We will also hear the languages from Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Bicol. That's why there are so many stories that have been presented and the taste of each movie served to us by our filmmakers is really very different.]

Following the theme “ilumiNasyon,” the country’s pioneering independent film festival returns with 10 full-lengths and 10 short films in competition, as well as other components that will secure a space for independent filmmakers to tell their stories and share their perspectives on the issues that shape our times, while capturing the audience’s imagination.

The 10 competing full-length films are: ANG DUYAN NG MAGITING (THE CRADLE OF THE BRAVE) by Dustin Celestino; AS IF IT’S TRUE by John Rogers; BULAWAN NGA USA (GOLDEN DEER) by Kenneth De la Cruz; GITLING by Jopy Arnaldo; HULING PALABAS (FIN) by Ryan Espinosa Machado; ITI MAPUKPUKAW (THE MISSING) by Carl Joseph E. Papa; MARIA by She Andes; ROOKIE by Samantha Lee and Natts Jadaone; TETHER by Gian Arre; and WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER by Kevin Mayuga.

Short films in competition include: ANG KINING BINALAYBAY KAG AMBAHANON KO PARA SA IMO (THESE RHYMES AND RHYTHMS MEANT FOR YOU) By Kent John D. Desamparado; GOLDEN BELLS By Kurt Soberano; HINAKDAL (CONDEMNED) By Arvin Belarmino; HM HM MHM By Sam Villa-Real And Kim Timan; KOKURYO: THE UNTOLD STORY OF BB. UNDAS 2019 By Diokko Manuel Dionisio; MAKOKO SA BAYBAY (I AM GOING TO THE BEACH) By Mike Cabarles; MAUDI NGA ARAPAAP (LAST DREAM) By Daniel Magayon; SIBUYAS NI PERFECTO (PERFECTO’S ONION) By Januar Yap; SOTA (HORSE CARETAKER) by Mae Tanagon; and TONG ADLAW NGA NAG-SNOW SA PINAS (THE DAY IT SNOWED IN THE PHILIPPINES) by Joshua Caesar Medroso.

Additional genre participate in the competition category

Cinemalaya Film Festival Director Chris Millado shared that there will be a 90-minute animation film entitled Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing), and a 75-minute documentary film entitled Maria joining the competition category for the first time.

Iti Mapukpukaw is a Filipino-Ilocano rotoscope animated film that follows Eric’s life as it twists and turns after the arrival of the familiar alien and his uncle's death; both trigger Eric to remember his past and untangle his memories.

Maria documentary follows three women named Maria after the bloodbath of Former President Duterte’s drug war. A staunch supporter turned victim, a wife & mother fighting for their rights, and a woman who became a beacon of hope.

Cinemalaya 19 takes place at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) this year

This year’s Cinemalaya 19 brought its brand of cinematic experience to the Philippine International Convention Center amidst the ongoing rehabilitation of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Building where the usual Cinemalaya Film Festival is usually held.

“We hope to retain the unique community spirit of the festival, which was one of the main considerations when we were deciding on the venue. If we look at the history of the convention center, PICC is quite conducive for film screenings, having hosted the Manila International Film Festival in the 1980s,” CCP President Margie Moran-Floirendo stated.

For its 10-day run, the Cinemalaya films will be screened at three meeting rooms, Cinema Rizal (Meeting Room 1), Cinema Bonifacio (Meeting Room 2 and 3), and Cinema Felipe (Meeting Room 4). Fringe events and talkbacks will be held at Cinema Palma (Meeting Room 5). The exhibitions and filmmakers’ profiles will be on display at the Executive Lounge.

Film enthusiasts and festival fans will continue to enjoy the festival’s mainstays: Retrospective, lookback to winning films of past Cinemalaya editions; Best of the Festivals, which showcases the best films from local festivals; Visions of Asia, featuring award-winning Asian and Netpac films; Premieres, featuring never-before-screen films; and Dokyu, which screens award-winning documentaries.

The Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, considered the longest-running independent film competition of its kind in the ASEAN region, will once again harvest the best of the best, with films competing in various categories such as Short Feature/Narrative, Experimental, Documentary and Animation. Pre-selected entries will be screened on August 5 to 7, at the CCP Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater). Awarding will be on August 12.

The 6th imake.wemake Youth Innovation Prize (YIP) winners are all smiles as they pose with DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette T. Biyo (center), Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) Vice President Atty. Louie Soriano (second from left), and the Board of Judges - Engr. Percival Magpantay (second to the right), Engr. Carlos M. Oppus (rightmost), and Engr. Edison A. Roxas (leftmost).

The innovative potential of youth, combined with the power of technology proved to be a dynamic force on the road to developing a culture of innovation during the 6th imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate competition Final Presentation and Awarding Ceremony on June 28 at Crimson Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) recently conferred the prestigious Youth Innovation Prize (YIP) Award to three school teams whose technologies exhibited novelty and patentability, functionality and unique selling point, collaboration, design and feasibility, extensibility, and practicability.

This year, innovations in forest conservation, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable microplastic pollution control took center stage. With the win, the three school teams each received Php 200,000.00 cash prize, sponsored by Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) through HCPI Vice President, Atty. Louie Soriano; a trophy, and Php 20,000.00 cash prize for their respective coaches.

Youth Innovation Prize Award

Cavite Science Integrated School bagged the YIP award for “Project KALINGA: Geolocation Estimation of Forest Activities Using Triangulation and Sound Classification.” The project aims to address the long-standing issue of illegal logging and deforestation in the Philippines and aid forest rangers in monitoring them. It works by using the triangulation method and sound classification to estimate the geolocation (or geographical location) of sound sources - specifically, to detect sounds of equipment used in illegal forest activities like chainsaws and vehicles. The team is composed of Uno A. CafĆ©, Rainier M. Guinto, Sigmund Francis S. Manalo, and Precious A. Zapanta, with Elain E. Malones as their coach.

Philippine Science High School-CALABARZON Region Campus also seized the YIP award for “SAMGIOP: Development of an IoT-based Sensory Device for Leaf Damage and Abiotic Factors in Cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) Using Raspberry Pi.” As an innovative response to the pest infestation problem in cabbages, their technology works via a two-part system: the SAMGIOP rover which detects leaf damage, and the SAMGIOP slave which detects abiotic factors - non-living chemical and physical aspects of an environment. The monitoring device relies on the Internet of Things (IoT) mechanisms with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) embedded in the Raspberry Pi. The team is composed of Harvae C. De La Cruz, Joanna Daniella C. Fajardo, Ma. Hannah Isabel L. Suguitan, and Anjirehl Ernest Godfrei C. Zapata, with Marizel B. Villanueva as their coach.

“E-QUIA: Remotely Operated Electrostatic Collector of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Microplastics in Freshwater Environment” of Vinzons Pilot High School, likewise, successfully secured the YIP award. Addressing the environmental damage caused by microplastics, particularly in freshwater, E-QUIA is a remote-controlled device that collects microplastics from freshwater environments via an electrostatic filtration system. The device uses an environmental-friendly method of separating microplastics from freshwater via electrostatic charges. The team is composed of Alliyah C. Cambronero, Reynier Francis E. Espinola, Allen Misty B. Jalina, and Lea Monina G. Pioquinto, with Jason N. Bargo as their coach.

The winners were determined based on scores by the Board of Judges composed of Engr. Percival Magpantay of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Engr. Carlos M. Oppus of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), and Engr. Edison A. Roxas of the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Young Scientist Award

Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), through Ms. Graciela Mendoza - head of scholarships and community education, also bestowed the Young Scientist Award (YSA) to four students who were carefully selected from a pool of 80 aspiring young scientists. Winning the award are Sigmund Francis S. Manalo and Precious A. Zapanta of Cavite Science

Integrated School, Harvae C. De La Cruz of Philippine Science High School-CALABARZON Region Campus, and Reynier Francis E. Espinola of Vinzons Pilot High School.

The YSA is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) college scholarship awarded to outstanding students who exhibit admirable values and a strong commitment to STEM education. With the scholarship, the grantees can pursue a STEM course of their choice at any university or college in the country.

GBF has been DOST-SEI's yearslong partner in promoting a strong culture of science among the Filipino youth to encourage, recognize, and support them in pursuing careers in STEM on the road to becoming future innovators and nation builders.

C&E Adaptive Learning Solutions Innovation Award

To complete the roster of winners, Lala National High School received the C&E Adaptive Learning Solutions (CEALS) Innovation Award, through C&E Adaptive Learning Solutions (ALS) Vice President, Mr. Gerric Gomez. CEALS is a special award given to a school team whose project exhibits excellent design using the Arduino platform and has strong market potential. Their project, “Automated Calamansi Harvesting Robot,” focused on effective and efficient crop harvesting that maximizes crop yield and minimizes its losses. It functions by detecting fruits on trees using RGB-D Fusion Mask R-CNN and carefully harvesting them using a robotic arm, thereby avoiding damage to the fruits and trees. The team is composed of Guilmarc C. Baculao, Luilaine R. Lumanas, Carlo James C. Saladaga, and Jetrice Lesuzest L. Tanguihan, with Harold C. Delostrico as their coach.

As a consolation prize, C&E ALS also gave all the finalists an opportunity to get a certification on their Arduino skills. The Arduino Fundamentals Certification is an online exam that tests students’, makers’, and professionals’ knowledge of electronics and programming, thereby helping young makers hone their skills and become part of the growing community of innovators in their pursuit of technological development.

C&E ALS is one of the big players in the field of science, technology, and innovation and a DOST-SEI's partner in empowering young emerging scientists by providing them with innovative tools and services - such as the Arduino platforms which were utilized in the projects - that support the unique demands of the future, and the Philippines’ needs to harness a critical mass of STEM professionals.

The Final Presentation and Awarding Ceremony is the culmination of the 6th imake.wemake which started with 89 innovation proposals from public and private high schools, nationwide.

The Board of Judges selected the top 20 proposals that focus on the novelty, innovation, and impact of the project on pressing societal and community issues in agriculture, health, food security, transportation, education, business, disaster mitigation, and the environment.

Eleven (11) high schools from Luzon, three (3) from Visayas, and six (6) from Mindanao were invited to participate in the week-long bootcamp on Arduino Platform and Electronics held on March 13-17, 2023, at the Sequioa Hotel, Paranaque City where students learn to use different kinds of sensors, actuators, and interface it with Arduino.

The most popular Filipino dishes

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Filipino cuisine is a fusion of various cultures and influences from different regions in the Philippines and abroad. It is a unique blend of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter flavors that tantalize the taste buds of many. The Filipino cuisine is known for its savory meat dishes, seafood delicacies, and sweet desserts. In this blog, we will be discussing some of the most popular Filipino dishes that are a must-try for anyone who wants to experience the Filipino culture through its food.

Adobo

Adobo is considered the national dish of the Philippines. It is a dish made with meat, usually chicken or pork, marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic. It is then simmered in the same marinade until the meat becomes tender and flavorful. Adobo is often served with steamed rice and can be eaten as a main course or as a snack.

Sinigang

Sinigang is a sour soup made with tamarind or other sour fruits, vegetables, and meat. It is a popular comfort food that is often served during rainy days. The sour taste of the soup is balanced by the sweetness of the vegetables, and the meat adds richness and depth of flavor. Common meats used in sinigang include pork, beef, and fish.

Kare-Kare

Kare-Kare is a rich and flavorful stew made with oxtail, peanut butter, and vegetables. The dish is traditionally served with bagoong, a condiment made from fermented shrimp paste. Kare-Kare is a popular dish served during special occasions, and it is considered a classic Filipino dish.

Lechon

Lechon is a whole roasted pig that is often served during festive occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and fiestas. The pig is slow-roasted over an open fire, and the skin becomes crispy and golden brown, while the meat remains tender and succulent. Lechon is often served with a dipping sauce made with vinegar and soy sauce.

Lumpia

Lumpia is a Filipino version of the spring roll. It is made with a thin crepe-like wrapper filled with vegetables, meat, and sometimes seafood. Lumpia can be served as an appetizer or a snack and is often accompanied by a sweet and sour dipping sauce.

There are many variations of pancit, each with its own unique flavor and ingredients.

Halo-Halo

Halo-Halo is a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, sweetened condensed milk, various fruits, and sweet beans. The name “Halo-Halo” means “mix-mix” in Filipino because the dessert is meant to be mixed together before eating. Halo-Halo is a refreshing treat that is perfect for hot summer days.

Bistek Tagalog

Bistek Tagalog is a dish made with thinly sliced beef marinated in soy sauce and calamansi juice, then sautƩed with onions. It is a simple yet flavorful dish that is often served with rice and a side of steamed vegetables.

Chicken Inasal

Chicken Inasal is a popular grilled chicken dish that originated from Bacolod City in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is a dish that is known for its flavorful marinade and distinct yellow color. The marinade is made with a combination of calamansi juice, vinegar, lemongrass, garlic, ginger, and annatto oil, which gives the chicken its yellowish-orange hue.

The chicken is then grilled over hot charcoal until it is cooked through and the skin becomes crispy. It is often served with a side of garlic rice, and a dipping sauce made with soy sauce, calamansi juice, and chili peppers. The dish is also typically accompanied by achara, a pickled papaya relish, to balance out the richness of the chicken.

Chicken Inasal is a popular street food in the Philippines, and it can be found in many restaurants and food stalls. It is often served on skewers, making it easy to eat on the go. The dish has gained popularity in other countries as well, with Filipino restaurants around the world offering their own versions of Chicken Inasal.

In recent years, variations of Chicken Inasal have also emerged, including chicken inasal burgers, wraps, and salads. Some restaurants even offer different flavors of the marinade, such as spicy or honey garlic. Despite these variations, the classic Chicken Inasal remains a beloved Filipino dish that represents the unique flavors and culture of the Philippines.

Balut

Balut is a popular Filipino delicacy that is made by incubating duck eggs until the embryo inside is partially developed and then boiling or steaming them until cooked. It is a unique and somewhat controversial food item that is enjoyed by many Filipinos and has gained a following in other countries as well.

The process of making balut involves selecting fertilized duck eggs that are about 17-21 days old. The eggs are kept warm and humid to allow the embryo to develop. After about a week, a small light is shone through the egg to check on the development of the embryo. If it has reached the right stage, the egg is then boiled or steamed until cooked.

Balut is typically eaten as a snack or as a source of protein in the Philippines. It is usually sold by street vendors who carry baskets of warm balut eggs that are ready to eat. To eat balut, the top of the egg is cracked open, revealing the partially formed duck embryo inside. The liquid inside the egg is then sipped, and the embryo is eaten with a spoon or fork.

The taste and texture of balut can vary depending on the age of the embryo. Younger embryos have a softer texture and a milder flavor, while older embryos have a more developed flavor and a slightly chewy texture. The broth inside the egg is also rich and flavorful, and some people enjoy dipping bread into it.

While balut is a beloved delicacy in the Philippines, it is not without controversy. Some people find the idea of eating a partially developed embryo unappetizing, while others have ethical concerns about the treatment of the ducks. However, for many Filipinos, balut is a cultural tradition that has been enjoyed for generations.

In recent years, balut has gained popularity in other countries, especially among adventurous eaters who enjoy trying new and unusual foods. Balut has been featured on various food and travel shows, and some restaurants even offer it as a menu item. It is often served with a variety of condiments, such as salt, vinegar, and chili peppers, to enhance the flavor.

Balut is a unique and controversial Filipino delicacy that has been enjoyed for generations. While it may not be for everyone, it represents the rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions of the Philippines. For those willing to try it, balut can be a flavorful and memorable culinary experience.

Boosting BPOs in 2023: Payoneer and PH outsourcing companies share insights for industry growt

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Payoneer Regional Vice President of South East Asia Miguel Warren gives an impassioned speech during The Payoneer 2022 Forum

The Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) industry continues to be a reliable source of employment for Filipinos. In fact, the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) recorded a 10.6% increase in revenue last 2021 at $29.49 billion. With the pertinent role that BPOs play in the country, leading cross-border payments platform Payoneer aims to strengthen the industry further through intensified collaborations with outsourcing leaders in the Philippines.

Payoneer recently held a forum at New Clark City to discuss industry trends, challenges, and opportunities with key stakeholders.

“I think it’s really important to bring together all the different stakeholders that are involved in cross-border international business so we can interact, engage, and learn from each other on how to take the customer experience to the next level. At Payoneer, it’s our goal to help customers grow internationally, to go global, and to be able to help them realize all the potential that tomorrow holds,” said Miguel Warren, Payoneer Regional Vice President of South East Asia.

Filipinos: The Gold Label Customer Experience

Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) Managing Director Rosario Cajucom-Bradbury noted that the Philippines accounts for 40% of the global customer experience market by headcount, owing to the ‘gold label’ quality work of Filipinos.

With Filipinos being known globally as one of the best in the outsourcing business, more opportunities await Filipinos not just in Manila but in other provinces too. Aiming to generate an additional 1.1 million direct jobs by 2028, IBPAP targets to strengthen the presence of BPOs in cities outside of Metro Manila. In terms of emerging locations for the industry, Cajucom-Bradbury noted that Iloilo, Pampanga, Angeles, Metro Clark, Bacolod, and Davao City are already being leveraged for voice-based and transactional BP services.

“Our vision is to become the world’s number one experience hub for digitally enabled and customer-centric services while driving inclusive and sustainable economic growth and social growth for the Philippines,” said Cajucom-Bradbury.

Growing BPOs in PH: CEOs share lessons and opportunities

One with the goals of IBPAP and CCAP, CEOs of different outsourcing companies exchanged stories and insights to further strengthen the BPO industry in the Philippines.

In his talk, Clark Outsourcing CEO Zack Williamson shared the importance of building a ‘COOLture’ to keep employees engaged and inspired. Creating a fun environment starting with the office design and balancing it with high belief in employees, are some of his topline tips for BPO leaders.

On the other hand, Guerilla Creative Marketing President Vanessa Janssen pointed out the importance of acquiring the right clients. She said, “Find the right clients who pay the right money for your staff. A good company, culture, leadership, and management will spot the potential.”

Meanwhile, TeleWorkPH Founder and CEO Marge Aviso reminded about the importance of partnerships especially with regards to cash flow. “Partners make or break your future. I cannot emphasize enough how paramount Payoneer has been as a partner to Telework PH because of their ability to collect cash right away.”

Payoneer is the leading cross-border payments platform that offers innovative solutions so companies can thrive in the global digital economy. The company is trusted by the world’s leading digital brands serving over 2,000 top marketplaces.

“The forum not only allowed us to understand the industry better but also inspired us to ‘take the big leap’ with IBPAP and the whole outsourcing community. For us at Payoneer, taking that leap means staying true to our goal of connecting more freelancers, online outsourcing businesses and BPOs to global opportunities now more than ever,” said Warren.

Food, Negros Food!

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Visitors to Negros Occidental always take away happy memories about their gastronomic discoveries. From iconic pastries to Bacolod City’s branded chicken inasal, to hearty, steaming, extraordinarily rich bowls of kansi, Negros has become the new food destination. In the last decade alone we’ve earned the moniker “Organic Food Capital”. We’ve also taken a seat among seafood farmers, Negros being the leading prawn producer in the country. We’re graduating a record number of culinary arts professionals from our colleges and universities. Our chefs are second to none. And most recently, Negros Occidental has become the bedrock of the slow food movement in the Philippines. No wonder then, Negros Season of Culture celebrates Negrense Food. That’s how we’re rooted. And that’s how we’ll take on the world.

Popular Lumpia Ubod Versions: Can You Tell the Difference?

First on the table is Lumpia Ubod. To be clear, our version is different. Our wrapper is not made from eggs, but ground rice. We don’t put sauce outside. We put it inside where it can suffuse well the filling of palm heart and choice meat. The lumpia ubod (or, as Tagalogs would say, lumpiang ubod) is a traditional snack hereabouts. It even lists among the esteemed “mahjong merienda” fare. Families known for special cuisines take pride in their version of the lumpia ubod. In ages past home kitchens used special ingredients, like the tahure paste made with tofu, sugar, and ginger, spread inside the lumpia wrapper to give every bite heat. But with time, the lumpia ubod has evolved to delight modern palates. In Lumpia Ubod, Negros Season of Culture spent a day with Chef Richard Ynayan of the Institute of the Culinary Arts of the University of St. La Salle for a chat about these innovated offerings.

Negros Seafood

In addition to being a big player in the country’s prawn and fish pond industry, Negros Occidental has many fish ports throughout the province. Outside the capital, three easily come to mind, the Tagda Fish Port in Hinigaran, the Tabao Fish Port in Valladolid, and the Sagay Fish Port in Sagay City, each one fetching over five tons of harvest daily. Seafood has always been a major food group in the Negrense’s daily menu. In Negros Seafood, we set up kitchen at a private resort in Silay City to create the perfect setting for Chef Gabriel “Gab” Melocoton and Chaela Ruth Mirano to take us on a seafood cooking show that re-issues three popular delicacies into five-star dishes. Beyond steaming, beyond smothering them with chili garlic sauce, Chef Gab tweaks the lukon, diwal, and litog to surprise you.

Peanut Gang

Peanuts Gang is a story of MSME success, one of many uplifting entrepreneurial stories in Negros Occidental. At the recent Negros Trade Fair in Manila, Negros Season of Culture met Shiena Becaro Pobleto, a young mother who has pushed the peanut business started by her parents beyond what they ever dreamed of. There in Glorietta, within her two-by-three booth, she wooed the world with her branded peanuts. Now we know, it’s not all about selling. One of her siblings has integrated farming into the picture to ensure the supply chain. This is not so “MSME” anymore, it seems, but that’s exactly what happens when MSME turns big.

While in the subject of food, the Negros Season of Culture looks forward to celebrating an upcoming event at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell Center, Makati City. Happening from November 4-6 is Namit Namit Food Festival, Best of Negrense Favorites. Negros Season of Culture ambassador, actor Joel Torre, is the man behind JT’s Manukan. Fancy meeting him and savoring his famous chicken inasal at the Power Plant. Mark your calendars.

Masskara Festival Food Trip at Bacolod - 18th Street Palapala Seafood Grill & Restaurant

Wazzup Pilipinas! Our Team goes to Negros together with Wyatt Belmonte and Jayson Biadog to celebrate the much-awaited and exciting 3 weeklong Masskara Festival. Too bad that our Editor in Chief Ross Del Rosario was out, covering several out-of-town events in Ilocos and different regions in the country.

But what happened last Sunday was the final main event highlight of the Bacolod Masskara festival. So before heading to the main event in Lacson Street Bacolod city. Together with Wyatt and the 3 owners of the restaurant we just had a great late lunch. A little talk about being owners managing the 40-staff restaurant now on its 19th year in business. It's the usual routine and different unique tasty menus.

Also, a little chitchat when it comes to who visits the restaurant like it was called 4 times by former VP Leni Robredo, Chavit Singson, and Manny Pacquiao. And supposed to be VP Sarah Duterte, with her staff having lunch beside us at the other table. Also the most viral talks with Joel Torre and Edu Manzano dining in the area.

With lots of car park available and can dined around 300+ persons. I think this will be a perfect lunch or dinner stopover when you are touring around Negros or the Bacolod area to feel the local vibe. To taste the rich taste of local seafood from different Cities and Towns of the Negros Island.

Teodoro, Sister, and Roy Lopez talked to us about how fresh they sourced the seafood with a roving freezer. To make sure the freshness of seafood in different areas in Negros like Ilog, Victorias, Hinobaan, Bacolod, Silay, and much more. The Tuna and Marlin were not coming from Davao or Mindanao area but all from Negros Island.

Roy told me about that Kinilaw with salted egg and beans. Is kinda unique and he recommends this to anybody that will visit the place. Also, the Chef or Cook recommends the Crab to be cooked with butter and it really tastes good. Also, their crab was fat and tasty.

You can customize the way you want the seafood to be cooked for as low as 250 grams or 1/4 kilo or more. You can just tell the cook or chef what kind of dish you wanted to be prepared.  The food looks expensive but they have a platter that only cost 1000 peso good for 4 people.  Perfect budget for students, workers, and OFW returning home for vacation. Also with lots of Foreigners as well visiting the restaurant.
